Here at The Source, one of our goals is to bring you, the reader, behind the scenes and straight into the creative process. With that in mind, here’s a glimpse at the preliminary designs for Batwoman, from the desk of the amazingly talented J.H. Williams. Now, we’ve seen our share of interior sneak peeks for Batwoman’s upcoming stint in DETECTIVE COMICS, but this is a first look at the steps taken to bring Batwoman to the finished page. We dare you not to click.
DETECTIVE COMICS #854, from Williams and writer Greg Rucka, hits in June. Oh, and here’s the cover for July’s DETECTIVE #855…

The character sheet is initialed “07.” This has been in the pipe for a while.
Nothing short of incredible.
By the way you’re doing an awesome job with this blog Alex. Keep up the good work.
Very, very impressive.
J.H. Williams may be the most talented artist working in comics currently. His unique vision, masterful skills and eye for composition cause anything he works on to be elevated far beyond the words he is depicting.
I am thrilled to bear witness to this work, and I know that I will not be disappointed.
Williams III is a fantastic artist ad I really can´t wait to see her debut issue, I loved the designs and the final art.
[...] character designs posted Friday on the DC Comics blog, we’re given a glimpse into Williams’ thought process: Gone are [...]
Nice to see that they redesigned the Kathy Kane alter ego. It is good to have the character be fleshed out while out of as well as in costume. We don’t want her to be just a female copy of Bruce Wayne.
I can’t wait. Big fan of Williams’ art. That cover makes me drool.
Does Williams entirely know what punk, goth, psychobilly, and rockabilly looks are? I’m not sure he does, although the nautical star tat is a nicely authentic touch (I’m guessing he got that from browsing Suicide Girls). That top, though? Never seen a girl at a show wear a halter top like that, first of all - when’s the last time navel-exposing tops were big, anyway? The mid-to-late 90s? It’s not scene, just trashy. And the haircut is more Anna Williams from Tekken than scene. When’s the last time anyone wore a page bob, when Pulp Fiction came out?
Look, I appreciate that she’s got a distinctive look in her civilian life. But this is a weird mishmash of influences from various scenes. I mean, are they going for a Katy Perry pseudo-retro thing here?
My two cents in regards to the grievances that her look doesn’t reflect the mentioned subcultures: she’s a grown woman. We’re not talking about a teenage girl looking for a niche who needs to go out of her way to make EVERYONE and their mom know what music she listens to.
A) that’s just one outfit the sheet uses as an example of something she might wear- you can’t use it as a judge of the full compass of her style.
B) the influences are probably going to be subtle and meshed- not defining. Especially since she favors many styles.
Personally I can see how she might appreciate a few of those genres from the image. There are visible influences in there as well as being just a cute, practical outfit.
As regards to her alter ego look. 1) Could be her answer to Matches Malone. An identity to get information with. 2) This is a comic book! Look at the style of clothing that exists in Gotham. Not many fedora wearing people on today’s streets. Maybe in the DCU this look is in trend?
[...] So, it may be, DC, that I took a little break from reading an out-of-date article (ELIZA, really? haven’t even thought of her since the old MU* days) to see this. [...]
