Excellent…so glad to see Doc returning to DC. Any chance of the Shadow coming with him?
YESSSSSSSSS!!!
You bastards! When? Where? How much? Sir you write in whatever amount you want on this blank cheque and I will honor it. The countdown was great, I seen it before the title.
[...] via their blog the Source, has given an enigmatic look at a classic [...]
Doc is the new batman for sure…thats my guess
Jeeze, really?
Is anyone calling for these characters? Is Dan Didio just trying to relive his youth at this point?
Judging from the shadow on the far right, it looks like some sort of “The Spirit” appearance.
Hey Will, shut up.
Anyone who is a fan of old pulp heroes is excited to see him back.
Love the fact that someone is using Doc, though I would have suspected an indie to grab it. Hope they keep to same style as the original. Will the supporting cast be along?
Cool, I’ve been waiting for Doc to get back. Can’t agree more about The Shadow, I would love to see him back as well.
So the next question is: “Who’s the artist?”
I’m no good at this kind of guessing…though the image itself does kinda remind me of Darwyn Cooke.
Look at the wall:
Doc Savage and the Spirit!
Hey mambazo
Given sales on the spirit, there certainly aren’t a lot of you pulp fans left.
I will enjoy all five issues of the ongoing thoroughly!
“Who’s the artist,” Greymattersplat? Based on the thumbnail my first thought was Darwyn Cooke as well, but after viewing the image in glorious full resolution I’m almost positive that this is the work of Brian Stelfreeze.
Are people demanding Doc’s return? I sure as hell have been. Along with The Shadow, Green Hornet, The Spider, John Carter, Domino Lady and a few others.
I already got Lone Ranger, The Phantom, and Zorro!
Although if this is Doc’s return, Im surprised its at DC. I would have for sure thought Moonstone or Dynamite.
This isn’t a character I have any interest in. If Doc Savage appears in a comic I’m already planning to buy, that’s cool. Otherwise I doubt I’ll go out of my way to read the story he’s in.
Though now that I think about it, I probably would’ve said the same thing about The Spirit until Darwyn Cooke got me to check out that book. So, who knows, I might rethink my position once I see the creators involved.
I was hoping for it to appear in Wednesday Comics.
As a follow up to my earlier comment (if it ever shows up, apparently it’s still “awaiting moderation”…), yes, that is indeed the Spirit, and yes, the artist is indeed Brian Stelfreeze.
How do I know? Because I viewed this piece in its entirety (this is only a portion of it!) on his blog, which was apparently posted there almost a full year ago in August of 2008!
In addition to being beautifully colored, the full version contains a few other surprises as well…
You can find out what they are here: http://stelfreeze.blogspot.com/2008/08/acid-wash.html
It looks like several people have correctly identified the Spirit’s involvement, but no one has mentioned the artist. The piece is an edited version of a piece Brian Stelfreeze did a while back. Check out his blog and see who else was in the scene.

EXCELLENT!!!!
Please, oh please let the Shadow come back to the DCU also….that would be FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!

This is eight kinds of excellent.
I like the Spirit, Doc Savage, Shadow…all those “pulpy” kinds of characters. There’s enough room in the DC Universe for all this kind of stuff…just simply love it!
In fact, it would be cool if DC actually tried to do a few “old style” pulps of course with illustrations by the best in artists in the business.
Just my 2 cents.

“Best artists in the business” I meant to say.
Sorry for my Yoda speak.

Maybe this is a answer to the “Noir” line of Marvel.
But rather than doing an alternate version of Superman, Batman and etc, they pick up some of the original and more popular heroes from the pulp era.
I’m wondering if this is the DC project that author Paul Malmont (The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril) mentioned in his interview with Astonishing Adventures Magazine last year. He’s a huge Doc Savage fan, and his novel demonstrates that he can write swell pulp tales.
As a BIG Doc Savage fan, while I would love to see Doc in the comics again, am not too thrilled to see DC do him. You guys DIDN’T do a good job the last time. IMO, the best Doc comics were done by Millenium, with Dark Horse a close second. The whole ‘bring Doc into the modern world’ didn’t work. I’m not overly thrilled to see DC doing him, UNLESS you get people involved who known, understand, and appreciate the character and can do him correctly.
