Over at EW.com, news has broken that filmmaker and noted comic fan Kevin Smith is not only returning to the world of comics, but to Gotham City, re-teaming with his BATMAN: CACOPHONY collaborator Walt Flanagan for BATMAN: THE WIDENING GYRE, a six-issue mini-series starring the Dark Knight, slated to be followed by another Batman mini six months after the conclusion of “volume one.” Here’s a snippet of what Smith had to say:

“The Widening Gyre is a 12-issue Batman mini-series split into two volumes, with a half year break between each. Issues one through six (Book I) will ship monthly. Then, the story goes on hold for six months. Then, issues seven through 12 (Book II) will once again ship monthly. Yes, I built in the break to insure we don’t run into my usual problems with lateness. But I’m trying to improve, folks: first six scripts and first issue’s art — by Cacophony artist Walt Flanagan — were already done before we took this public.”

EW.com has a first look at an interior, inked page by Flanagan and Art Thibert. If that’s not enough for you, check out the pencils for the same page above.

BATMAN: THE WIDENING GYRE #1 hits in August.

THANK YOU. I loved Cacophony so I’m definitely looking forward to this!

Man, there’s barely two lines of “The Second Coming” that don’t make for spectacular titles.

I’m more excited that Baron Blitzkreig is in the preview art! Haven’t seen him in ages. I have Cacophony but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.

    WOW!! I’m…underwhelmed.

  5. RockinRich says on :

Well, at least it will keep him away from movies for a while.

why? didn’t you learn your lesson after cacophony? that was horrible.

  7. D.Batman says on :

i really like cacophony. yes … the issues were late … but none the less the work was good. i hope to see more out of this one tho! this is more than just a 3 issues mini!

I like Kevin Smith, but the I didn’t care for the art in Cacophony. I don’t know if it was the colors or how it was inked (which I doubt because Sandra Hope is usually spot on) but this page looks pretty decent. I’ll have to wait to see how the budget is looking before I order it though.

CRoy2814 … the colors were a little different. but then again, so were the colors in gotham after midnight. i think alot of artists are trying to seperate themselves from each other. not everyone can be as amazing as Jim Lee … but they are trying new things to make a name for themselves.

    im open to all ideas.

Why would you let Kevin Smith continue to butcher Batman? Cacophony was absolutely terrible. I guess all the ppl who are Kevin Smith fans but don’t read comic s enough to know the difference between what’s a good comic and a bad one will all run out to there local LCS and buy it. A damn shame DC is even wasting paper on crap like Cacophony. Myabe its appropriate that the word PHONY is in Cacophony?
