The official word on DOOM PATROL

You saw the Matthew Clark sketches yesterday, and I did promise more details, so here we go: DOOM PATROL #1, from Keith Giffen and Matthew Clark hits in August and will feature a METAL MEN co-feature by Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and artist Kevin Maguire (more on that soon). You’ve heard bits and pieces in different venues. but now it’s all here, in one cozy place. More importantly, we wrangled Giffen to give us the lowdown on the book (and, well, why you should check it out), plus some pretty Clark pages (with Giffen’s breakdowns for said pages) to whet your appetite. Take it away, Keith:

“This is the book I’ve waited my entire career to write.  Oddly enough, it’s the book Matt’s waited his entire career to draw (and does it ever show!). That’s got to count for something.  Between Matt on Doom Patrol and my old partners in “bwah,ha,ha” on Metal Men (that’d be Mark and Kevin, don’tcha know) how can we possibly go wrong?

Well… we could, but we won’t.  No.  Really.

Tell you what.  Pick up a copy, and you tell us.”

DAMN does this look good. Can’t wait for August to come.

  2. Starocotes says on :

I hated what Giffen did to Dr. Fate in the Reign in Hell mini but I loved the mini nontheless. I really look forward to Doom Patrol…. even though I wish he would go back and continue Trencher ;)

  3. Warewullf says on :

Gorgeous art and a top-notch creative team but I’m afraid I’m one of those guys who feels Morrison’s Doom Patrol can’t be beat.

Though if this series explicitly wipes Byrne’s version from existance, I might be swayed to buy it.

  4. diamondrock says on :

Personally, I think Morrison’s Doom Patrol (though full of interesting concepts and characters) strayed a little too far from the essence of the original Doom Patrol. From everything I’ve heard this is looking to be *exactly* what I want from the Doom Patrol. I’m very excited.

Simply can’t wait. I keep saying it, but books like this, Booster Gold, Warlord, Secret Six, Rebels, and the forthcoming Adventure Comics are looking like the second “golden age” of DC Comics to me.

  6. brenticles says on :

I’ve just never been able to get into the Doom Patrol, but I will check this out because Giffen is writing and the art looks great.

Will the Metal Men continue from the recent mini or will it be a new start?

  7. Gorbunov says on :

Beatiful. But I can only hope Giffen will step up and be writting better dialogs than those tremendously boring words he usually does.

  8. ramaral says on :

GIffen doing a book he actually pitched for - a miracle. What’s not to love?

  9. COREMARK says on :

When I first heard about this, I wasn’t too excited. But after reading interviews and seeing Clark’s pencils, it’s now a must buy.

I also discovered the DOOM PATROL with Morrison from which I’m a definitive fan : he pushed very far the inner mythology of the title like noone and added very fun new things. It will take much to make me forget the threatment onto Rebis ( the esoterical androgyn ) or Niles Caulder, the innovatine tone story-arcs after story-arcs…

Well I can see the art is impressive and I can’t wait to see the contrast with Giffen’ deviant plots- he said it will be directed more towards horror-stories, not after offering each month a completely new foe to face with…or did I read wrong ?

( Have to say I agree completely with MAXWELLCHRIS, it just need a new DEADMAN title )

  11. Zawisza says on :

Morrison’s DP was a little too trippy for me. The DP, for me, needs to be outrageous and zany, but just short of trippy. Or if it is trippy, not all trippy all the time.

I’ve had a peek at some of this stuff and I gotta say this book is just getting more and more engaging for me.

I’m with Ian on calling for a new Deadman title. Maybe Arnold Drake’s OTHER creation could become a co-feature in DP once Metal Men runs its course. . .

  12. Rajah says on :

Awesome. I love the classic Doom Patrol. Have not read all of Morrison’s run but I agree that it was a bit on the trippy side. This version looks closer to what I like about the team. And my favorite, Elasti-Girl, is looking good here.

  13. Theozilla says on :

I wonder if Beast Boy will have spot in it, he was in the Doom Patrol during the One Year Later period?

  14. maxwellchris says on :

To ian33407: You are so right about the DCU needing a new Deadman title. That would pretty much fill my plate, right there. Mr. Didio, can you hear us? :)
