By now, you’ve had plenty of time to digest the latest installment of our own Dan DiDio’s 20 questions at NEWSARAMA, so we here at The Source thought it might be neat to try something new. Well, new for us. Every now and then we’ll break some news tidbits, and since this blog is all part of being “interactive” and “connected,” we thought it’d be a good way to get some feedback and thoughts from you guys.
In this batch of questions, Dan brings up some interesting talking points. Here are a few:
• Rags Morales was confirmed as the artist for FIRST WAVE, with Brian Azzarello, which stars Doc Savage, the Spirit and a few surprise guests.
• Dan announced THE WEB/HANGMAN and THE SHIElLD/INFERNO ongoings, which will be part of the co-feature stable of titles.
• What’s the post-BATTLE FOR THE COWL deal with the BATMAN titles?
• Which DCU title has been a pleasant surprise for you, as a reader?
So, what do you think? Chime in below.

“Rags Morales was confirmed as the artist for FIRST WAVE, with Brian Azzarello, which stars Doc Savage, the Spirit and a few surprise guests.”
Yes, more Spirit!
“What’s the post-BATTLE FOR THE COWL deal with the BATMAN titles?”
Is this a question for me to answer or for Didio to answer? If it’s for me to answer, then I’ll just say I’m very unhappy with what’s going on right now and will be sticking with Gotham City Sirens and the Streets of Gotham for now, sorry. I’m also unhappy that Tim is wearing the Red Robin costume when it was originally introduced for Jason to wear during Countdown, I think. I liked his (Tim’s) DCAU costume more. I got into reading the Robin comics after he changed his costume because I recognized it from Batman: The Animated Series.
“Which DCU title has been a pleasant surprise for you, as a reader?”
Adventure Comics and it’s not even out yet! The current title for me is Booster Gold, I’m definitely loving this title and I’m ecstatic that Jaime Reyes will be cofeatured soon! I just hope Ted Kord will be joining the title soon, as well…
FIRST WAVE?
So that means you´re going to put the pulp heroes in the 20’s and early 30’s, before Alan Scott and Jay Garrick? That could work.
But you could also say who are the other characters: the Spirit, Doc Savage, Blackhawk, and …
By the way, an advice: don´t announce new titles without also anouncing the creative teams. I’m interested in the Red Circle, but I would like to know who´s the team behind the new books before start thinking on buying them.
If Secret Six were to have a cofeature, who would that be? I hope it’ll be Suicide Squad, I really enjoyed that miniseries by John Ostrander from a while back.
well, Tiny Titans was a beautifully pleasent suprise and is now on my monthly pull list.
I think this is some of the best Batman stuff i have ever read, really fun and adventurous, i can’t wait for Morrison and Quitely’s run to start this week.
“Which DCU title has been a pleasant surprise for you, as a reader?”
Now that Conner’s back and I’m buying DC books again, I tried the latest issue of “Secret Six”. It was hilarious, I was surprised by how funny it was.
“What’s the post-BATTLE FOR THE COWL deal with the BATMAN titles?”
The deal is a big no-sale. Dick Grayson and Tim Drake are two of my favorite DC characters, but not like this. Call me if we get a new “Dick Grayson:Nightwing” book in a year or so. One exception: I do plan to give Batwoman a shot in Detective. She’s not related to the “musical masks” mess, and I think this could be a break-out hit.
Overall, I’m really excited about “Adventure Comics,” far and above anything else on the horizon.
Weren’t The Web/Hangman and The Shield/Inferno announced elsewhere? Sidenote:Works out nicely, those pairings. Ten pages is about all I can take of Hangman or The Inferno, as they don’t seem to be very intriguing.
Also, this blog just announced the title Brian Azzarello and Rags Morales are working on. Which is great because it gives me some idea of what its about, and I’m interested. First Wave…it would be cool if this series had loose connections to the DCU. Nothing substantial, but a mention of the Daily Planet here or Miraclo mention there.
Questions:
As you are integrating the Red Circle and other universes into the DCU, have you ever thought of doing the same with WildStorm?
How much involved with the rest of the DCU will the Red Circle be?
Any chance Wednesday Comics will be aviable in any kind of trade or collected edition?
Just being curious here: are there at DC any writers who didn’t have English as their native language? It seems there are artist’s from all the countries in the world, but writers are always from USA or UK.
Feedback time:
I love Rags work, I may pick the series just because of him, as I find Azzarello a bit irregular. Joker was great, but his work on Deathblow wasn’t a big deal for me.
About the Red Circle characters, I don’t know if I’ll pick them up from #1, it depends on how much they relate with the rest of the DCU. If they have good but independent series, I’ll go for the trades. I think the way Static has been integrated in the DCU by joininh the Teen Titans is great.
And for the Batman titles, I think they may be too many. I was sure I’d pick Batman & Robin (for obvious reasons), Streets of Gotham (Paul Dini and the Manhunter co-feature), and Sirens (because I love the work of my fellow countryman Guillem March, and also Paul Dini again, hehe), but I’m going to give a chance to all of them. Also, I would’ve like to see a writer who’s neve been in Batman, instead of having Judd return to the title (maybe Warren Ellis, or a new talent like Christhos Gage).
There are plenty of pleasant surprises: the GL and Superman books (including GLC, Action, SUPERGIRL, etc), and also Booster Gold and Secret Six, R.E.B.E.L.S. looks great since #1, and I enjoyed FCA: Run #1 and the BFTC: Arkham Asylum, probably the best of each group of series).
I must say I also had some unpleasant surprieses: Judd Winnick’s Titans and Trinity.
I find the book I look forward to most these days is the Vigilante book so that is a pleasant surprise. I liked the original and it’s nice to see the character and Marv Wolfman back together.
Recently, Dan has said something in the lines of being in the serialized business, not caring much for trade readers. But the dynamics of today’s market is much more complex than that. So how is he trying to hold into a model that seems to be cliearly dying to work with a more holistic approach?
Two biggest ’surprise’ great books are Secret Six and REBELS.
Okay, neither of them really surprised me by being good, but they surprised me by HOW good they are, in particular Secret Six. REBELS was a little slow until last issue, where it really took off and hit the ball out of the park.
Both are selling pretty low, especially REBELS, so I’m hoping both make it for a while at least (though Secret Six is so inextricably linked to Gail Simone that once she leaves I think it might be okay to cancel it or rework it greatly).
I was intrigued by Fan’s back-door “announcement” that Len Wein is the “current” scripter of JLA which means Dwayne won’t be coming back after his break.
But the book’s been a mess lately so it’s clearly time for yet another revamp. Rumors mention Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Jim Lee etc.
Wassup?
I’d really like to get some new blood on the JLA - I know Morrison wasn’t exactly new blood when he came onto the book, but he was a far cry from the huge writer he is today, I think, with mostly indie hits under his belt to that point (Animal Man, Doom Patrol, etc)
It’d be wonderful to see DC reach out to some up and coming big thinking talent (I would have said Fraction and/or Hickman before they went Marvel exclusive) to try to light a fire under this book.
I am FREAKIN’ PUMPED for the new Batman & Robin. I’m excited to see Dick being his own version of Batman. I’m really looking forward to the dynamic between him and Damian. This is all very exciting and different and fun. Obviously Bruce will be back, but until then… bring it on the new!
What’s the deal for the post battle for the cowl batman titles?
I found it engrossing and daring enough to keep me reading Batman even tho I’m not a big Batman fan and I’ve actually found myself excited for it. Still I think it would have been more fun and daring if Tim Drake won. After all Dick Grayson is Red Robin in Kingdom Come so it wouldn’t be too weird. I just think that would have been the most gutsy and original. Still I’m excited by the current state of things and will be picking up quite a few of the Bat-Books this summer.
What title has suprised me?
I just bought the trades for Johns old Teen Titans run and thought it was some of the most loveable and fun comics I’d read in a long time. They comraderie of Bart Allen, Tim Drake, Conner Kent, and Cassandra Sandsmark was excellent as they encapsulate to me, more than any other incarnation of the team, the next generation of heroes. I’m extremely excited for Superboy and Bart’s return. I know I’ll love adventure comics and I hope it features all Conner’s friends and examines how things have changed/stayed the same with the group.
R.E.B.E.L.S is easily one of the best books out there. Not only is the story insane and fun but probably one of the best art teams on such an under rated book. Also greg rucka’s action comics has done leaps and bounds over most of new krypton books.
“Which DCU title has been a pleasant surprise for you, as a reader?”
R.E.B.E.L.S. and Secret Six, two best DCU series at the moment. Hope they’ll survive for a long long time.
“Rags Morales was confirmed as the artist for FIRST WAVE, with Brian Azzarello.”
Brian Azzarello & Rags Morales is great creative team. Expect adventurous noir of high quality .
“THE WEB/HANGMAN and THE SHIElLD/INFERNO ongoings”
Who the frag are creators? JMS said he won’t write either. And looking at shockingly unimpressive list of artists you guys had found for JMS it’s scary to think which of “all-start” talents you’ll put on JMS-free ongoing. So, right now I’m in “don’t give a crap” mode.
“What’s the post-BATTLE FOR THE COWL deal with the BATMAN titles?”
From the first month going to pick up every title that Winnick-free. After that planning to give to Batgirl one issue to make me interested. And Azrael is under question too, since have found myself really don’t caring about him after that boring mini. Will wait for writer announcement.
“Which DCU title has been a pleasant surprise for you, as a reader?”
Well, I was expecting Secret Six to be good, so that one wasn’t really a surprise. I’m gonna have to go with The Mighty. Each issue adds a little more mystery and sense of foreboding. Great stuff.
Red Circle creators as reported right here at The Source(http://dcublog.dccomics.com/2009/05/15/the-official-word-on-the-red-circle/)
“This August, writer J. Michael Straczynski pairs with an all-star cast of artists to introduce a new wave of heroes into the DCU with four one-shots, each spotlighting one of the four. THE HANGMAN pairs JMS with artists Tom Derenick and comic legend Bill Sienkiewicz, while INFERNO features the gritty linework of Greg Scott. THE SHIELD showcases the work of former SUPERMAN and BATMAN artists Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens while THE WEB features the team of Roger Robinson and Hilary Barta. A pretty impressive lineup, huh?”
“Red Circle creators as reported right here at The Source(http://dcublog.dccomics.com/2009/05/15/the-official-word-on-the-red-circle/)”
It’s creative teams of one-shots. Writers of two ongoings are unknown. But artists probably will be the same, sigh.
“It’s creative teams of one-shots. Writers of two ongoings are unknown. But artists probably will be the same, sigh.”
D’OH! Sorry about that. Yeah, I suspect some of those artist will be on the ongoings. Would be nice if they got someone like Shane Davis to do an arc. Or maybe Ivan Reis after he’s done with Blackest Night?.
Re: Spirit, Doc Savage, Red Circle heroes, etc.
If DC loses the rights to publish these various licensed characters in the future, will that present problems with re-printing the DCU material that they appear in?
For example, when IDW re-printed the original Transformers mini-series, they had a pretty awkward problem with the issue that featured Spider-Man.
Also, Marvel has had to skip issues in their recent “Essentials” collections if they feature certain characters that they no longer have the rights to (like Rom the Spaceknight).
Just wondering,
-Max
What’s the post-BATTLE FOR THE COWL deal with the BATMAN titles?
Whats not to say about bfthc? I felt it was done the way it should have been done. I felt it kept me on my toes and I loved both the tie-in series because I’m a huge Azreal fan and Barb fan. Of all the one shots I wish that could be expanded on was “The Network,” however Tony Daniel’s core books were all strong writing and art.
I am content just reading Batman stories so to have it mixed up like this I’m grabbing everything Gotham related. Of course Grant Morrisson’s run on Batman & Robin has me drooling but all the other titles are just as vital in my eyes.
Which DCU title has been a pleasant surprise for you, as a reader?
Final crisis legion og 3 worlds issue #4 if you want particulars, but really Flash, Green Lantern, GL Corps and all the “Super” books (Action, Superman, Supergirl) were never on my radar until the last year and I’ve been getting every back issue I can find.
Vigilante, R.E.B.E.L.S., Alpha One, and even Power Girl.
DC you keep me reading and enjoying comics
The Mighty has been incredible, I knew that Pete Tomasi was a great writer based on his work on Light Brigade and Green Lantern Corps as well as the rest of his oeuvre but this has been a testament to his skill and the recent change in artists from Peter Snjebjerg to Chris Samnee has only increased my love of this book! Well done on all counts!
R.E.B.E.L.S. has also been a quiet hit at the store that I manage!
Got another question, after reading this month’s solicitations:
Batman Widening Gyre will have repercusions on the DCU, or it will be “independent” from what happens in the DCU?
The Batman starring in that series is Bruce or Dick?
If it’s involved in the mainstream DCU, I’ll pick it monthly, but if it doesn’t, I’ll wait for the trades.
