Some notes from the Bat-office

Friday, June 19th, 2009

By Michael Marts

Hello there, Bat Nation! As BATMAN REBORN kicks into high gear, I just wanted to send a quick note to you all–a friendly reminder–to run (don’t walk!) to your local comic shop this coming Wednesday for two spectacular debuts!

First up we have DETECTIVE COMICS STARRING BATWOMAN. Writer Greg Rucka and artist JH Williams III have been pouring their hearts and souls into this comic over the past several months–from the very first page you’ll see what we mean.  You won’t want to miss this first adventure, which unveils a new villain for Batwoman to face.

And if one story isn’t enough for you, fret not–we have not one, but (count ‘em!) TWO stories in DETECTIVE COMICS each month. Following the lead feature is THE QUESTION, written by the very busy Greg Rucka and illustrated by Cully Hamner. Renee Montoya and her inquisitive alter ego take center stage each month in this second feature.

Next up we have the series debut of GOTHAM CITY SIRENS, featuring Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn! This new series is written by a guy named Paul Dini–perhaps you’ve read his work in DETECTIVE or BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM. And this series is beautifully illustrated by Guillem March, whose work you may have seen in GOTHAM GAZETTE, or in last year’s BATMAN/DETECTIVE “Last Days of Gotham” two-part crossover.

And this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg…Phase Two of BATMAN REBORN kicks in later this year, with the return of two long-time favorites–the all-new BATGIRL series in August, and the all-new AZRAEL series in October!

Thanks for reading!

No plans this weekend? We can fix that

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

By Alex Segura

Did you know there are two comic conventions happening this weekend? No? For shame.

Not only are there two shows — Wizard World Philadelphia and Charlotte’s Heroes Con –but DC will have a presence at both. Our very own Dan DiDio will be holding the fort down at Philly, while Senior Story Editor Ian Sattler and Editor Brian Cunningham will be trekking to Charlotte. So, if you have a burning question about anything DCU or just want to talk about comics with some of your favorite creators, then swing on by. You can visit the Wizard and Heroes Con sites for more ticket, talent and event info. Don’t miss it.

Some news for you: Robinson, Bagley step aboard JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

By Alex Segura

It’s a short week here at The Source, what with our bosses letting us have Friday off. But that just means we have to end the week with a bang.

So, let’s get right to it: Writer James Robinson and artist Mark Bagley will be the new ongoing creative team on JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, starting in October. I’ll give you a minute or two to wipe the drool off your keyboards.

All done? Great. The fun doesn’t stop there. We managed to snag Robinson for a quick second to talk about the upcoming assignment, and how it ties into his current JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE mini-series, with artist Mauro Cascioli. Take it away, James:

“It’s a thrill to be given the reins of DC’s flagship team book and to know that my partner in crime(fighting) will be the esteemed Mark Bagley who’s dynamic storytelling skills I intend to make full use of.  It’s further exciting/gratifying for me that I can dove-tail the events of Cry For Justice into the main book where post-Blackest Night will emerge a new team and a new exciting direction as they get caught up in the next wave of events building throughout the DCU.”

Speaking of Mr. Bagley, who’s just coming off a historic run on the yearlong weekly series TRINITY, we’ve snagged a first-look at an upcoming cover from JUSTICE LEAGUE. I probably don’t even have to ask you to click, do I?

And if you’ll be in Charlotte this weekend, swing on by Heroes Con, where Mark Bagley will be sharing his first thoughts on the gig during the DC NATION panel on Saturday at 1pm.

A quick housekeeping post: Blog address/registration issues

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

By Dave McCullough

I like to think I’m somewhat Internet-savvy. But there are moments when even my finely honed Interweb powers aren’t up to snuff. In those dark times (i.e. all the time), The Source is lucky to have the support of our top of the line DC Online team. Dave McCullough, from said DC team, wanted to chime with a few technical updates for those of you using “RSS feeds.” Take it away, Dave:

Hey everyone, we’ve discovered an issue that prevents new users from registering for the blog. We’re working on correcting it, but the fix will require a slight change to the blog’s address.

Unfortunately, changing the blog’s address may break the RSS feed for anyone who has subscribed already. If this happens to you, just return to the blog and re-subscribe to the feed.

The address change may also affect any links or bookmarks you have made. To reduce the chances that you’ll lose track of us, we will temporarily redirect the old address to the new one. To be safe, you should update your bookmarks. To be even safer, you can bookmark us or link to us using our shortened address, dcublog.com. This one will always point you to the right place.

Sorry for the inconvenience and for those of you that helped us find the trouble, thanks for bringing it to our attention! We’ll keep you updated as we have more info.

Excited about the third STARMAN OMNIBUS?

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

By Alex Segura

starmanomn3

Well, you should be. I know I am.

The third Omnibus collection of writer James Robinson and artist Tony Harris’ STARMAN series hit today, continuing the adventures of the modern day Starman, Jack Knight. In this installment, featuring work from Robinson, Harris, Gene Ha, Dusty Abell, Phil Jimenez and J.H. Williams III, Opal City is terrorized by Dr. Pip, an eccentric bomber. Also, Starman teams up with a certain Dark Knight to save the life of Solomon Grundy. Collecting STARMAN #30-38, STARMAN ANNUAL #2, STARMAN SECRET FILES #1 and THE SHADE #1-4, the STARMAN OMNIBUS v.3 is the height of layered, engaging and powerful storytelling. I still have fond memories of sitting in my grandparents’ house reading the first batch of issues, and being excited an intrigued by not only the stellar work within the pages, but also sensing the care and thought both Robinson and Harris put into the creation of these stories.

Family. Legacy. Heroism. Humor. Action. It’s all here, and you’d be remiss to let it go by.

What more do you need to know?

How about a look at Robinson’s afterword from the collection? Click below to read.

Mon-El faces an enemy he can’t overpower: death

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

By Alex Segura

What is a young man to do when he’s handed a death sentence? Experience life as best you can, no? Mon-El deals with his fate by doing just that — exploring the world and interacting with some of DC’s international cast of heroes.

But back in Metropolis, a new media mogul takes the airwaves. His name? Morgan Edge. Writer James Robinson and artist Renato Guedes continue their stellar run on SUPERMAN with issue #689, and we have some pages for you to peruse.

SUPERMAN #689 hits 6/24.
