The Justice Society has always been about legacy. Young and old. Legends and rookies. Together to protect Earth from any kind of villain.
But what happens when the generations disagree?
After writers Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges conclude their first arc on JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA, the team splits – creatively and literally, with Willingham holding the fort and Sturges moving over to a new ongoing series, JSA ALL STARS, with artist Freddie E. Williams III.
And what’s the high concept? Taking a cue from Magog, a new JSA team forms, choosing a more proactive approach to handling the villains populating the planet, in defiance of some of the JSA’s most stalwart members.
But that’s not all. We cornered JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA and JSA ALL STARS editor Mike Carlin for a tad more info, out here in the wilds of San Diego. Take it away, Mike:
“The differences in styles on how to approach the mounting problems before them have grown too intense to ignore…Hence the splitting of the team. Oh, and the JSA is torn into two groups, as well!”
And what a coincidence – we’re announcing the new series just in time for our “Great Society” panel, which is slated to cover all things relating to the JSA, including the newly-announced MAGOG, POWER GIRL, JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA, JSA ALL STARS and more, with comments from Carlin, Willingham, Sturges, Williams, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti and more.
For those reading from home, here’s a first look at art from JSA ALL STARS, plus some other panel goodies.

Okay, lets see, JSA All Stars? Freddie E. Williams? Sturges? Power Girl? ME! Hell yeah!
[...] This seems very similar to what is going on right now with the Justice League of America and the team being put together by Hal Jordan. Can’t any of the super-groups of the DCU just get along? For the full article, as well as some preview artwork of the upcoming new series, check out The Source. [...]
Looks like I’ll be buying both JSA and JSA:All Stars. Loved that JSAll-stars cover!
This is probably the strongest property on DCU right now. Just powerhouses on both art and writing. Hopefully, Legion might one day become as interesting, when they stop messing around with it and let it run its own course.
I was excited about a new JSA book until I saw the word “proactive.” I have never liked “proactive” superhero teams. I didn’t like it when it was tried with Extreme Justice and I disliked the recent Cry for Justice #1. Having a superhero team be “proactive” is not something that interests me.
But Sturges is a great writer and I love JSA, so I’ll check it out.
Fantastic News. I LOVE Freddie E. Williams!
This sort of echoes what they did in the 70s with the original “super squad”…but Geoff Johns has always sort of maintained the group as a family-a postiive tone I enjoyed. So, from that perspective this seems really disappointing.
JSA-AS seems like what they used to do in the 90s when they added the word “EXTREME!” to the end of all their coic book titles…
I love the JSA but and am going to give the Willingham/Sturges run a few issues..but will most likely drop if the book continues at this rate.
Where’s Lightning?
So WHO are the creative teams?
And isn’t this THE SAME deal as with JLA?
Oy.
Sounds like DC is interested in expanding their team books a la Marvel’s Avengers franchise. And I think it will dilute the concepts just like it has at Marvel.
Can we get a “Marvel Adventures”-style line at DC aimed at all ages (in addition to those aimed at young kids like the great Tiny Titans and Super Friends)?
I think we need continuity-free adventures of DC’s superheroes that are not aimed at adults only, the way the current main DCU is. There are books for the toddler and young reader set and there are books for adults, but nothing that can be read by everyone.
[...] deal of anticipation, but some trepidation, that I react to the news coming out of San Diego from DC Universe: The Source that the JSA is splitting – both the creative team and the roster [...]
While the idea excites me, I can’t help but wonder about the ‘team’ shown in the image… sure, some of them I can most definitely picture going for the proactive approach. But Stargirl? I can’t help but dread the prospect of what is going to happen to take her from where she is now, mature beyond her years and someone whose balanced approach has been moulded by Jay, Alan, Ted and Pat, to someone who chooses to follow the methods of Magog. As for Cyclone… ok, in her case she could just as easily go to either side and still maintain her sunny disposition out of sheer innocence, so the jury’s out on that one. And of course, I am having a hard time picturing Rick and Libby being poles apart in this decision as this image would suggest.
Nevertheless, inspite of my concerns, I am looking forward to this series, which promises to be good.
i would have thought that heroes that wanted to be more proactive would just join GL’s JLA team but i guess people want to be the boss of their own team
Looks to me like the covers are not a fully clear indication of who will be on each team for sure. As Hourman, Damage, Power Girl, and Courtney are on the covers for both teams from what I am seeing. But I could see Damage on the more agressive team. Maybe Rick to keep and eye on him and help him out. Just a thought on it.
I took a really close look at the cover for JSofA #29 and I have to say that Jesus Merino’s version of Jay Garrick is about the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while!!! The bold outline of the lightning bolt and diagonal hip-to-shoulder look is really great. It’s nice to see it fattened up too.
I have a feeling he really likes drawing these characters!!! I’m thrilled to see where this series goes.
I wish both creative teams the best of luck because there haven’t been 2 JSA team books since All-Star Squadron and Infinity Inc were running in the 80’s.
