Did you think we’d have only one bit of news on Thursday? Well, think again.
As we’ve noted here, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Doc Savage in the pages of DC comics in the near future. Now, we can actually give you a tad more, detail-wise.
This November, writer Brian Azzarello teams with artist Phil Noto for the BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL #1, which sets the stage for an entire new world for the Doc, along with a slew of characters that will pop up later, including the Blackhawks and Rima, the Jungle Girl. It all starts here, and I’m not exaggerating when I say you’re really in for a treat.
Azzarello is no stranger to noir or gritty storytelling, as anyone familiar with Vertigo’s 100 BULLETS and the recent JOKER OGN can attest. Coupled with Noto’s neo-classic art style and you’ve got the perfect launching pad for a collection of books that will pull these beloved characters into the 21st century.
Oh, and did I mention Batman? Yeah, you may remember him.
So, allow your jaw to drop at the J.G. Jones cover below. Then come back tomorrow for another treat, plus comments from Azzarello himself.

Very much looking forward to this. Hoping Doc will be done right. Many have tried and failed. Azzarello seems a good choice for writing. Not familiar enough with Noto’s work to comment .. The cover here is fantastic. Fingers crossed … after I add it to my pull list.
Cool.
[...] make you happy … Azzarello is teaming with artist Phil Noto for a Batman/Doc Savage special. Per DC’s the Source blog, the special “sets the stage for an entire new world for the Doc, along with a slew of [...]
First off about time DS got his due, all these older Characters need to be shown if it wasn’t for these people we woldnt have batman ark-types. secondly Batman is beyond awesome and why is he meeting him? either way im beyond on board
Sign me up. It’s as good as in my collection
[...] If the team of Azzarello and Noto wasn’t enough for you, check out the cover from J.G. Jones below, which comes our way thanks to DC Universe: The Source. [...]
I love this! I cant wait
Its about time both Doc Savage, the Spirit, The Shadow, Black Hawks, and just the Pulps in general started making a come back
Oh and it isn’t “The Doc” its just Doc
Azzarello may be a good noir writer but this is pulp and there’s a big difference between the two. If you guys don’t know this, then maybe DC shouldn’t be doing it at all.
Jones’ cover is very good.
For me, you’ve got to have Doc look like he looks on this cover.
He should look a lot like he appears on the paperback covers by…??? Bama?? I’m sorry, the name escapes me.
But Doc has to look like that … a lot like he looks on this cover. The previous picture of him with the luger in his hand…with him leaning up against a wall… does NOT MAKE IT!!
It’s crucial that he looks right. If he doesn’t… he fails.
I’m looking forward to this… hope this creative team can set a standard of quality that we all can “stay on board” for.

droolingfanboy I was just thinking the same thing on noir vs pulp.
Damn nice looking cover though.
Hmmm could be interesting, I’ll need to see more previews before committing.
“ark-types?”
Wow.
I also hope this is done right. Batman, perhaps more than any other member of the DC universe owes his persona to Doc. The dead parent that start him along the path, the rich boy who uses science and technology to bust bad guys, the training to the pinnacle of human perfection, the vest/utility best, the grapple/silk line used to scale buildings. The lab, the souped up cars, in the lair beneath the building. I mean, come on, slap a cowl on Doc and you have Batman.
I agree that the look of doc has to be right, and I know that most doc fans will be expecting Bama-esque art, but that is not how doc was described. He should have been younger (mid 30’s), and darker (man of BRONZE). As much as I hate to admit it, when I read doc (and I am up to #150 currently) I almost see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I have all the pulps, and I even have the “lost radio script” book. I’ll most definitely add these to my Doc collection. Hope they release soon.
