THIS JUST HAPPENED: BATGIRL revealed

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

By Alex Segura

Welcome to the first installment of “This Just Happened,” a feature we’ll throw out here on the blog semi-regularly. It’s pretty self-explanatory. We’ll spotlight a key scene or moment in a recent DCU book and with some level of spoiler warning, show some cool art from said book. So, let’s get started, shall we?

BATGIRL #1 is out, and if you haven’t picked up the issue yet, I’d suggest you head on over to your shop and experience the full issue for yourself, by the stellar team of Bryan Q. Miller and artist Lee Garbett. To say the speculation surrounding the identity of the new Batgirl has been crazy is an understatement, so it’s definitely worth the read. Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

Back? Great. Wasn’t this page cool?

Thanks for contradicting Batgirl’s previous series in the reason for Cassandra quitting…

  2. jorel1983 says on :

dunno if u meant that as sarcasm or not but good to know steph is still there maybe she can cheer tim up

  3. Stage3evolution says on :

I got no problem with Stephanie Brown being Batgirl, looking forward to reading Batgirl still

  4. zodcomplex says on :

Huh. So, it seems I won’t be buying Batgirl anymore. I liked Steph a lot more when she was Black Mask’s fetish doll.

  5. Websnap says on :

If they don’t have any good plans for Cassandra, this isn’t getting a second look.

  6. girlwonder says on :

Lol talk about a Spoiler alert ;-)

  7. reaper2k says on :

Nope. You lost me. Should have been Charlie (aka Misfit). This is just wrong.

  8. jonbrak1 says on :

Brilliant! This is what I was hoping for. I’ve always thought Stephanie should be Batgirl. Hooray!

  9. markajcook says on :

I liked the issue. One request for Cassandra, don’t turn her into a killer again. That was lame-o lame. Thanks!

  10. talos1 says on :

OMG! 0_0 Steph is the all new Batgirl?? *Blinks* Heh, I suppose I can live with that as long as DC don’t end up turning Cassandra in to a Super villain as a result.

Anyone seen the official solicitation for Batgirl in November because apparently we see a silhouette of her all new costume on the cover and from what I can make of it it’s looking VERY Frank Miller DKR era Batman inspired like! Sweet! BD

  11. darthnat says on :

The continued mistreatment of Cassandra makes my heart hurt a little. All will be forgiven if DC actually does have a plan for Cass, but something tells me Didio just said that to make the fans feel better.

  12. Theozilla says on :

I fine with Steph being Batgirl as long as her character is not a screwup character anymore (I am betting that is why Oracle is going to be in it). Still, I wonder what the different costumes mean?
Secondly, I hope they do not leave Cassandra hanging (her reason for quitting was kinda weak), but other than that this series looks pretty good.

  13. theray says on :

As much as I liked Cassandra as Batgirl, I’m willing to give Stephanie a chance in the role. I honestly would’ve preferred Bette (Flamebird) Kane, but we’ll see how Steph does.

  14. embee says on :

I’m cautiously optimistic about this title, but I think Cassandra Cain has been treated pretty disrespectfully as a character. It’s also rather problematic that the only non-white member of the Bat-family gets traded in for the blond white girl.

I sincerely hope DC has plans for Cassandra, hopefully with a writer who really gets and enjoys the character.

  15. lipsofpoison says on :

Really pleased about this. Hoping for more background on Cassandra and that she finds herself, but couldn’t be happier about who is in the cowl.

  16. fsbot says on :

I’ve decided to simply accept Stephanie as Batgirl since the editorial board is absolutely adamant for this to happen.

But Cassandra Cain has been treated like crap for years, and fans of her character have even been blamed for her poor care. She seriously needs to be redeemed and should not be forgotten. I’ve met scores of DC fans who only know of Cain from OYL and beyond and have ultimately deemed her a ‘worthless,’ ‘unoriginal’ character who should simply be cannon fodder.

I don’t know how they’re going to do it, but she needs to be treated well. Maybe her own series “Cain” or maybe she can take up the mantle of Nightwing… I don’t know. These are just things that I’ve heard that some people would like. But they need to give her to a writer and artist that fans can trust

  17. JoseG says on :

In the first 3 issues we see different costumes for “Batgirl”. Could it be that the are differnt Batgirls, ala “Mystery of the Batwoman” DVD from Animated Batman series?

  18. nw316 says on :

Hopefully Cassandra gets a new costume as right now it looks like DCs idea of diversity is to offer different choices of breast size on their blond haired, blue eyed white babe heroines.
DC has a heroine for every man’s taste… If you like ‘em itty-bitty sized there’s Supergirl, a little bigger, hey look, there’s Stargirl and Liberty Belle gossiping together… not enough there for you? well no problem here comes Wonder Girl and her bestest friend (not) Ravager both filling out the mid-sized range. Next up is the brand new and improved and about nicely fill out her new costume… Batgirl! And we’re half way up the range of DC’s heroines… The Kiddy brigade is now over, her’s the full figured heroine line-up starting with the always available Black Canary, followed quickly by her drinking companions Lady Blackhawk and the aptly named Cowgirl… and oops, can’t forget to include Saturn Girl,Sensor Girl and Dream Girl for those looking back on this from the 31st century. Now for the big guns… rounding up the rear nicely the one, the only Power Girl! The biggest heroine in the DC universe! Woo-hoo, Keep up the diversity DC!!!

On a more serious note, I can’t wait until Stephanie gives Batman her invisibility trick. THAT alone justifies adding her to the team. Imagine what Batman and Robin will be able to accomplish using that ability to fight crime! I can’t wait to see it (or not see it I guess since they’ll be invisible)

  19. Warewullf says on :

If you think Batman’s going to get the ability to become invisible, you’re dreaming.

I’m also on the not-thrilled-about-another-white-blonde-girl-heroine bandwagon.

    (Also, Misfit?! As Batgirl?! C’mon.)

  20. dusk83 says on :

    OK, Thx!

  21. emeraldlatenight says on :

I have to agree that Charlie would have been the best choice. She debuted (sort of) as Batgirl before, she has a unique power set, is a fun character, and is already mentored by Barbara Gordon.

I think choosing Stephanie was a huge misstep, and personally have no interest in reading about her. Is there any hope that this is a ruse and she will be giving up the cowl in the next couple issues?

  22. blackthunder01 says on :

Wow … I’m absolutely positivily 100% not reading this now.

Steph couldn’t cut it as a Robin. Are they trying to say that Batgirl is a demotion? DC comics keeps doing everything the fans DON’T want. Getting rid of Bruce, making Tim Red Robin, making Steph Batgirl, Damian as Robin … what’s next? Alfred dying?

I guess DC is totaly ignoring Oracle: The Cure too then huh? Because i remember Calculator got caught in that comic and suddenly he’s free again in Teen Titans. On top of that, they never touched on Wendy’s paralysis issue with Barb. Would have been nice to cure Babs already.

People i would have chosen to be Batgirl:

    Barbara
    Cassie
    Misfit
    Helena
    Zinda

    People i wouldn’t have chosen:

    Cassie
    Bibbo

  23. bjohnson174 says on :

Batgirl has been my favorite character for decades.

I read Batgirl when she was Barbara Gordon - teen heroine and Congresswoman. Silly perhaps, but often well-handled compared to other characters of the time. When Babs was shot, it was remarkably poignant.

I read Batgirl when she was Cassandra Cain - costumed Batgirl and then that poorly conceived “vision-quest”. And then the impossibly horrible stint after her book was cancelled when Cassandra was turned into a drugged assassin for no apparent reason and without explanation.

I was hopeful when Cassandra returned to being Batgirl in her miniseries and the Outsiders.

Gee - then out of the blue, this hard-working, committed, talented crimefighter quits.

And now this worthless foolishness with Spoiler pretending to be something other than a bit of fluff to lighten Robin’s series. In terms of character, Stephanie is a puddle and Cassandra is an ocean.

Do something with Cassandra. Something real. Please. If she has to be in the series, perhaps Stephanie could be Cassandra’s sidekick?

  24. myme says on :

What a huge disappointment. Why replacing Cassandra at all? It would have made some sense somehow, if Batgirl would have been restored to the iconic version, the Barbara Gordon Batgirl.

Please relaunch “Birds of Prey” as soon as possible, preferable with Black Canary and a cured Barbara Gordon as Oracle.

  25. lifeonqueen says on :

    No.

    That page was lame.

Dick Grayson becoming Batman at least makes some sense. Steph becoming Batgirl makes no sense - the only character in the DCU who should feel some iconic need to take up the mantle of this character is Barbara Gordon. Steph stepping into the cowl because Cassie left her the outfit and she promised Tim she wouldn’t be Spoiler anymore isn’t heroic, it’s a weak, liar’s side-step around a promise. It’s not the outfit that makes the hero, it’s the person inside it.

I’d have thought DC, as your business is heroes, would recognize that.

  26. hhbx says on :

I believe nw316’s post is about one of the dumbest and most ignorant posts I’ve read here since this place opened up.

  27. Gorbunov says on :

That’s how editorial imbecility keeps to destroy characters. Does everybody in ofice realy think that Cassandra became unsalvageable after all those stupid things they put her through. Yeah, right, now let’s complitely rotate all current characters of League and Titans groups, because suckness of those series is obviously the result of flawed characters and not of editorial cluelessness that turned them into unbearable mess.

Good editors that’s the thing DC needs most of all. And turning legacy into parody is the thing DC needs least.

  28. mackca says on :

I looked at the first issue yesterdy and it explains how Steph ends up with the batgirl costume. Cassie no longer has the desire to fight for another Batman ( Dick Grayson )because she has learned (?) that Bruce is missing and she is very loyal to Bruce. Paraphrasing Cassie she no longer wishes to wear the crest of the Bat and gives the suit to Steph. Perhaps Cassandra will wait until Bruce returns and then reclaim the Batgirl mantle. I have to agree with everyone else in the Cassandra camp that I think she is getting a raw deal. She is ten times the fighter Steph is ( especially with lady Shiva’s DNA running through her system. I enjoyed Cassandra’s run as Batgirl and am disappointed that Steph is now wearing the suit. There are too many blondes running around the DCU. There needs to be more diversity in the Bat family. Cassie brought excitement. Steph barely raises a yawn from me. I will glance at it from time to time but not pick it up as a regular ongoing. Let the story run its course and hope that Cassie finds her way home like Bruce.

[...] Batgirl 1 launched this week. And if you judged the book by the one-page reveal/spoiler that DC Source did and the comments it inspired, you would think the creators killed a character, [...]

  30. apollon says on :

My personal problem with this is that it seems like yet another cliché teenager superhero story; person has to manage a school life (homework/classes/friends), while keeping it a secret from them and their parents, and other heroes in there same group while still crime fighting. We’ll all seen it done before most notably was with Tim, and now it feels like we are tapping into that well again. More so sense the writer is from the show Smallville.

I’ll be playing this book by ear, and seeing how it goes. But I can’t say that I’m currently looking forward to things, and I do realize that we are only one issue in.

  31. severusdent22 says on :

Cassandra Cain is my beloved. Creepy for me to say I know, but it’s true. I will be so pissed if she’s not in the second issue. The “one who” is all is being replaced by the one who is barely half. Much as I like Stephanie Brown, She is, hands down, Tim’s true love (More so since Cassandra is his adopted sister) and she is the Spoiler. She works best as the Spoiler. I will give this book somewhat of a chance especially when she stops wearing Cassandra’s costume. Damian was right. She is not worthy to wear the costume of the “one who is all.” But on the subject of Damian, I think it is a great idea. Dick and Damian have almost the same dynamic that Bruce & Dick had. Plus I think Damian could benefit from Cassandra’s advice as well. But why Stephanie? The blonde Batgirl thing was done in the Fifties and it didn’t work then either. I was hoping maybe for a new character. But whatever, hopefully Cassandra Cain quitting means she will grow into something new. But whatever Steph ultimately wears, it needs to have purple, she can’t run from the Spoiler.

  32. boywndr49 says on :

Steph makes total sense. Years ago when Barbara became Batgirl, she didn’t ask anyone’s permission. She put on a suit because she wanted to help people. She didn’t have Batman’s permission, or anyone else’s. She did it herself.

That’s exactly what Steph is doing now. And she has definitel earned her place. She’s been fighting the good fight for years before Cassie became Batgirl. She has been used and abused by the Bat family on plenty of occasions, and still she didn’t not give up the fight.

And in case, no one was paying attention to the actual comic. It was actually VERY well-written. Characters were all very strong. My one complaint was how quickly, and unceremoniously Cassie left the costume behind. But everything else was spot on. Well done!

  33. moonlord2084 says on :

wait i got that mini series for batgirl and ravager tracking down there fathers’ i thought you all were bringing her back as batgirl? but now she has already been replaced…? that was quick, oh well off to collect another batgirl title i guess…

  34. bohemiacomicsreader says on :

Disappointed at the lack of a spoiler warning, as I haven’t read the issue and I’ve been avoiding the comic pages, I can accept Steph, I wanted Barbara, but I’ll give it a shot and see where it goes.
