The Dastardly Death of the Rogues!

What’s the best way to get over having to come back to work after a long weekend? Well, how about some cool news? I can’t really complain, as I’m sending this while heading south to the Florida Keys. But this news is big enough to interrupt my vacation — and it really should be shared now. Remember how we announced that after the completion of THE FLASH: REBIRTH and BLACKEST NIGHT, writer Geoff Johns would be writing a new ongoing FLASH series? One thing we didn’t mention was the name of his artistic collaborator. Johns will be teaming up with none other than superstar artist Francis Manapul to chronicle the adventures of the Scarlet Speedster next year.

The pair knocked it out of the park with their amazing work on ADVENTURE COMICS, so having Johns and Manapul continue their magic partnership with one of the DCU’s most iconic characters was definitely a no-brainer. They finish up their run on ADVENTURE COMICS with January¹s #6 to get ready for FLASH #1, which kicks off the high-octane and mysterious storyline “The Dastardly Death of the Rogues!” Stay tuned to The Source for news on the new creative team taking the reigns on ADVENTURE and a sneak preview of Francis’s art from FLASH. How’s that for a welcome to the working week?

This is huge. I’m very excited for Geoff’s Flash run and Francis Manapul is one of the best new artists. I am sad though, I thought they were both the perfect fit for Adventure Comics. I can’t imagine it with anyone else. Sort of a bummer there.

  2. Ricardo says on :

Awful news. I was expecting a little bit of consistency in here, but DC is all about jumping artists from book to book.

  3. choob says on :

I hoped it would be Ivan Reis… If Mahnke stays on GL and Manapul is on Adventure and Flash, whats Ivan going to be doing?

  4. dietel says on :

Well if the Geoff and Francis run on Adventure is something complete and memorable I won’t be entirely sad. But I just love Kon-El and I want to see him done justice.

It wasn’t a huge shocker for Manapul to move to Flash, that’s his dream gig, but I’m a little crushed Geoff’s leaving Superboy so soon. Unless he’s part of the new creative team?

  5. shugtastic says on :

so who will be taking over Adventure? i dont mind if they switch artists (though i DO like manapaul’s work) i REALLY hope geoff johns stays onboard!!!

  6. Astro says on :

It seems strange that Geoff would leave Adventure, after talking about how much he loves the character for so long (even, at one point, indicating that he might have stayed on Teen Titans had Superboy not been removed).

Hopefully he’ll keep on keeping on that book.

And how great would Ivan Reis on a Legion book be? It seems like that might be it, given timing issues (blackest night for 7 more months, then the Superman event which will almost undoubtedly lead into a new Legion ongoing, giving Reis enough time to relax AND get ahead on the Legion book).

And then Shane Davis on Aquaman and BAM, everyone is taken care of.

  7. querldox says on :

I know Francis wanted to work on the flash so good for him

  8. Aleclom says on :

This is great! I was afraid Van Schiver would continue with Flash (not a fan at all), so this is much better!

  9. dietel says on :

The blog made it seem like Geoff was leaving but I hope that’s just how it’s worded or his replacement is AWESOME. Adventure #1 had that awesome preview page so I know there were cool plans for the book.

I am excited about this news but I’m clamoring for more information!

  10. talos1 says on :

As am I for I’m too stumped to even say anything at this point. :/

  11. scarecroe says on :

Adventure Comics has barely begun, and they’re already off the title? That didn’t take long.

  12. mundungus says on :

I’m happy that Francis snagged his dream gig, but man oh man am I going to miss him on Adventure Comics.

I knew Geoff was going to be tackling the new Flash ongoing, that was a given, but I didn’t expect him to be jumping ship with Adventure Comics. They both seemed like they had some long-form plans for the book, but eh.

I’m curious if this Shoemaker fellow is going to be taking the reigns. He’s co-writing the Legion feature with Geoff in one of the issues.

Please indicate whether Henry Clayton is continuing as the Legion artist, because I think he’s also the unsung hero of the book.

  13. therealssjlink says on :

Geoff Johns confirmed on his twitter account that he is leaving the title.

  14. jawafather says on :

Oh come on! Already taking Johns and Manapul off of ADVENTURE? This is ridiculous. The second issue isn’t even out yet, and already there is news of a switch in creative teams. I mean, I don’t mind Manapul on FLASH, but I would have liked at least a year or more out of he and Geoff both on ADVENTURE. This is disappointing.

  15. batmanners says on :

    YES!

  16. dhacker615 says on :

Geoff Johns was spread to thin and something had to go. Green Lantern and the Flash are bigger franchises than Kon-El ever will be.

Ethan Van Sciver has been a train wreck on FLASH: REBIRTH, so it makes sense to pull Manapul onto the Flash on-going.

  17. heffison says on :

I’m very disappointed. If Conner Kent remains the lead in Adventure Comics after #6, I’ll still buy it, but I was really looking forward to the series it looked like DC was going to give us. And we have to waste two months with Prime
before Johns and Manapul leave, anyway.

I’m not getting any of the Flash books either way, so there’s no up side to this, as far as I’m concerned.

That said, I can see how Johns has so much going on that something has to be cut from his schedule. Too bad, after making us wait so long to get Kon-El back at all, that this is what has to happen.

  18. ericducos says on :

Huh? That coming soon page at the end of adventure #1 seemed to indicate Johns had long term plans. This really blows. I was looking forward to this book for months and it ends up being a mini. Manapul isn’t even drawing all six issues. Isn’t Jerry Ordway solicited for #4-5?

They totally screwed the pooch on this launch. Why bother?

  19. jnocomski says on :

WTH! Like a flea from dog to dog.

  20. Gorbunov says on :

You better to tell us who’s the new creative team right now! Don’t you dare to wank us, mister.

  21. Michel Nadorp says on :

There were two new Flash titles announced. I’d rather see Ivan Reis do the main title and Manapul do the Kid Flash title….
Was John’s leaving planned in advance, so Paul Levits could step in? Or is this ad hoc decision making?
Anyway I wouldn’t mind if Ordway stays as Adventure artist!

  22. jawafather says on :

Did Geoff step aside for Levitz?

  24. DC Universe: The Source » Blog Archive » An early look at Francis Manapul’s FLASH says on :

[...] Not too long ago, we announced that rising star artist Francis Manapul would be teaming with writer Geoff Johns on a new FLASH ongoing series. But because I was foolishly traipsing around the Florida Keys, we didn’t show any art. Well, it’s high time we remedy that. As you can see above and below, Francis has a great handle on the Scarlet Speedster — and we’re only in the sketch stage. We’ll post more once we see them, but in the meantime, take a look at these lovely images. We also cornered Francis in to giving us a little background on his work. Take it away, Francis: [...]
