Robinson. Bagley. Justice League of America. Now.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

By Alex Segura

It all starts here. Writer James Robinson pairs with superstar artist Mark Bagley to begin their run on JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. You’ve heard rumblings and speculation, you’ve read the chatter around the interwebs. But now’s your chance to get a first-look at the new creative team’s take on the most storied team in the DCU. To sweeten the pot, we threw in a variant cover by Andy Kubert. Happy Thursday.

Oh, and is that Despero?

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #38 hits 10/21.

Okay… This looks like a really good start to Robinson’s run. This will definitely cleanse the palette of the sub-standard arc by Len Wein. No disrespect intended, but that was an awful story.

  2. mhalteman says on :

Sorry, kennypick, but I can’t agree. We have Mopey heroes, Despero showing up to badly injure and/or kill a bunch of B and C List characters to make way for a new League, substandard art by Bagley (I like him, but this is not the book he should be doing), overly dark, serious and self-important tone. Definitely not for me. Maybe I’ll check back in once Robinson’s League is in place, but I doubt it.

UGH…I will be waiting until 2010 when hopefully the REAL JLA returns.

    And Despero again ? Really?

  4. mambazo says on :

    @mhalteman

They can be mopey all they want, but you can’t possibly disagree that the dialog here is MUCH better than what you find in Cry for Justice, and Bagley’s art is a huge improvement over his work in Batman.

Despero going “DEJA VU” is pretty dreadful.

  7. mhalteman says on :

mambazo, I do agree with both statements, but Robinson’s dialogue is still a far cry from “The Golden Age” and “Starman” and Bagley is still off his “Ultimate Spider-Man” A-Game.

However, to take a more positive tone, I do have some hope:

With Robinson, he has been stuck in Hollywood, Land Of Crappy Dialogue And Creative Bankruptcy, for the last few years and, I think, is still getting his comic book legs back. If he stays in the industry, I think he’s only going to get better as he gets his groove back.

With Bagley, he’s worked at Marvel for so long and has never really been associated with DC characters. The fact that he’s improving is a sign that he’s getting more comfortable. I do still think he would work better on “Teen Titans” or maybe “Brave and the Bold”, though.

Again, I’ll check back in after the growing pains have subsided and the League that Robinson really wants to write is in place.

I’m not liking the inks on this one. It’s just a bit too heavy handed over Bagley’s Pencils

  9. Will44 says on :

I have to agree, this is terrible. The dialogue is just way off, the art isn’t great. I really don’t care about those heroes and I’m assuming they’ll all die since that’s what DC does now.

Give me the big 7, fighting over the top, end of the world events. That’s what the JLA is about today, not C listers who are all down in the dumps.

  10. Ricardo says on :

Except Will44, that JLI was better than most of “Big 7″ launches and had only C-listers. It’s not about which chareacters you have, but what you do to them. Dan Jurgens had the big 7 and it was awful. Giffen had Gardner, Blue, Gold, Fire and Ice and they became staples.

  11. mambazo says on :

Even in Morrison’s run he alternated between using guys like Aztek, Huntress, Oracle, Steel, Big Barda, Plastic Man, and Orion. It’s not all about the big boys.

Besides, none of these guys are even going to be in Robinson’s JLA besides Dr. Light, you can’t really use this as a true insight into what his run is going to look like.

  12. meisterlegion says on :

I’m looking forward to the new JLA with Mon-El and a couple of the former Titan: Batman (or, the former Nightwing), Starfire, and Donna Troy.

…I think they will be the GREATEST JLA ever - even greater than former Big-7 :D

  13. wildclaw says on :

meisterlegion I have to agree with you. Its all got a feeling of newness and freshness. I just hope that PlasticMan isn’t dead. While at times he gets on my tits I just couldn’t stand to see him as a black lantern. We had one stretchy guy we don’t need another

  14. meisterlegion says on :

I agree wildclaw - it would be sad to see him killed off, as it appears in that last panel, just to make way for the new team.

I have fond memories of Plastic Man from his Saturday Morning cartoon show, and he was always good comic relief for the JLA when things got too serious - it just wouldn’t be right.

  15. dl316bh says on :

Looks good. Much better than Cry for Justice has been at any point. I’m beginning to get a good feeling about the Justice League again.

On the roster, I think people need to let go of the big seven for a while. The reason they worked so well was because Grant Morrison had a lot of great ideas for them; Mark Waid and Joe Kelly pulled it off, but from there it was all downhill. Need I remind folks of the twilight years of the JLA title? I really believe they needed to go away for a while; it’s hard to justify such a powerful team on a regular basis and not every threat is going to be Starro the Conqueror.

I’m excited about this new lineup. Even when Bruce Wayne inevitably returns I hope he allows Dick to keep his spot on the League. It would allow Bruce Wayne to have the Batman adventures we all love while the fully capable Dick Grayson holds down the fort in the League. Same goes for the other two of the Big Three. Save those guys as reservists for the huge threats and it would make their appearances feel special.

Anyways, I’m excited about some Titans moving up to the League. Plus the other fresh faces. Hopefully it will inject some much needed life into the title.

So far Cry for Justice has been bad. Really bad. This can’t be worse than that, and I’ve got faith in James Robinson. I’ll be picking this up for sure.

I’m bummed Vixen isn’t on the initial new lineup, but hopefully she’ll be back soon. Mari had a great showing in this latest arc and I loved it! I’m also happy to see Gypsy making a future appearance in JLA soon! Ditto for Donna Troy!!! ~ Hype

  20. JL4GL says on :

Poor Plas! He’d better stay on the team - I like him way better than the other guy (won’t even say his name ahahah)
If not here, then over on Justice Society — but keep Plastic Man alive!!
