NO.

In a very brief interlude with the mighty mite super-hero, the Atom, as he inexplicably jumped out of my phone, I was able to discuss the true nature of these creatures and assemble this list of why the Black Lanterns are not just the undead.

Zombies attack mindlessly.
Black Lanterns have all the characteristics of the living, just meaner.

Zombies growl and don’t speak.
Black Lanterns are nasty taunters.

Zombies want flesh, particular ones want brains.
Black Lanterns seek only our hearts feeding on emotion.

Zombies either shamble or run.
Black Lanterns can float.

Zombies wear the tattered remains of their clothes.
Black Lanterns accessorize their Black Rings with a dark version of their
clothes or costume.

Zombies can be stopped by chopping their heads off.

Black Lanterns reconstitute any limb that is severed.

Zombies have no purpose for rising from the grave.
Black Lanterns …. Do.

Oooooh! That’s Niiiice! So how about spilling the beans to which book this cover belongs? JSA Blackest Night? A future Robinson JLA issue?

Im guessing that is the cover to either Blackest Night: JSA or Blackest Night: The Atom…hoping its BN:ATOM :)

So they’re not the textbook definitions of zombie, but they’re still zombie-like.

Marvel Zombies don’t fit half of those guidelines but Marvel still calls them zombies. Black Lanterns are super zombies!

I’m not saying it’s wholly unoriginal or that I’m not digging Blackest Night, but I think it’s a little silly to deny that Black Lanterns aren’t based on or do not resemble the concept of zombies.

It’s the Variant for Blackest Night 4

  12. madmarva says on :

Don’t know anything about zombies, but Atom does make a tasty treat.

  13. polly_says says on :

marvel zombies have eye balls falling out or are decapitated heads that still talk….thats a zombie. These couldn’t be more different, or original….if you are actually reading you would pick up on this.

  14. prestond says on :

So, just to list one example, Psycho Pirate’s hole in the face with his eyeball dangling out isn’t at all similar to your example of “eye balls falling out or are decapitated heads”?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure you’re the one whose not actually picking up on things.

  15. asti316 says on :

Psycho Pirate doesn’t have a hole in his head, he was brought back fully restored, he only has a hole in his head on the front cover to intice ppl to buy the book.

So you are the one that whose not picking things up.

  16. eldonte says on :

Black Adam poked psycho pirates eyes out the back of his head. thats how he died. dc showed some of the black lanterns in early advertisements with their fatal injury visible a la the early martion manhunter ad

  17. prestond says on :

Ok, so I was wrong about that, because yes I did just go off the covers. (I’m only buying the core title and Green Lantern).

But that still doesn’t change the fact that their whole nature, which is coming to life and yet attaining a whole new destructive and murderous personality instead of a straight-up resurrection, mirrors the concept of zombies.

I’m not calling Black Lanterns zombies (nor am I saying this isn’t a really cool idea and interesting series so far so no need to be defensive), but to say that they are completely unrelated to zombies is just denial, and I laugh at anyone who says this is a completely original concept.

  18. polly_says says on :

    Thank you asti316…

    Infinite Crisis, Black Adam
