It seems like we had some technical difficulties yesterday, so apologies for that. We know how tough it is to get through a Monday without your usual Source goodness. Moving on, though…
Not too long ago, we announced that rising star artist Francis Manapul would be teaming with writer Geoff Johns on a new FLASH ongoing series. But because I was foolishly traipsing around the Florida Keys, we didn’t show any art. Well, it’s high time we remedy that. As you can see above and below, Francis has a great handle on the Scarlet Speedster — and we’re only in the sketch stage. We’ll post more once we see them, but in the meantime, take a look at these lovely images. We also cornered Francis in to giving us a little background on his work. Take it away, Francis:
“These were done a while back near the end of my Legion run. I tried to make a go at the Flash and these were the sketches I did as a pitch to try and get the book. It was nixed as Geoff and I decided to do Adventure Comics (which I love and will miss very much). However the opportunity to get on the scarlett speedster arose and so here we are. I’ll actually be doing my own inks and watercolor on the new ongoing (much like Adventure Comics) so this is just a tease of sorts. Enjoy.”

I am sooo sorry to say, I was apprehensive with Francis working on the Flash. I Am An IDIOT!! I will never have any doubt with what Francis can do again. Gorgeous..and they’re only sketches!!
Looks fantastic and gives the character a much needed update … but can’t we lose the silly Ethan Van Sciver chaotic lightning scribbles now, please? He’s a speedster, not Black Lightning or Electro.
Which Flash is that cos that bottom image looks like Wally’s lightning belt, so does that mean Wally’s outfit will be a different colour?
My god, I’ve died and gone to Flash heaven!! Those images are amazing!!

Loved Manapul’s art on ADVENTURE COMICS - Superboy flowed from his pencils beautifully. And, these previews of his FLASH - WOW…Steller!
I do have to echo asti316’s question - Wally’s belt does dip down in the middle and Barry’s lightening-belt is straight across…so, I’m a little confused if this is Wally or Barry here. Either way, looking forward to this title; it will be on my pull list.
To be honest I was bummed with the news that BOTH Geoff Johns AND Francis Manapul were leaving Adventure, but then I heard about this. When I heard about the aformentioned news written above, I couldn’t wit to see some brilliant art and this has gone above and beyond any incarnations of the scarlet speedster I had in mind. I, contrary to others, love the new take on the flash and his chaotic lightning “scribbles.” It is new and innovative. It gives Barry Allen the distinction he needs. I’m loving Flash Reborn and will be loving the ongoings.

YES! Oh man, this is so awesome! I knew Francis Manapul was awesome, but seeing these makes me super excited for the new Flash series!

I can not wait for this! I love Francis Manapul’s art and these sketches are no disappointment.
It is going to be sad that Francis Manapul is going to leave “Adventure comics” but he is the chosen one to bring back Flash. Awesome art, and his pencils give the correct attitude to Flash. Welcome aboard to the lighting speedsters family
I’m assuming everyone’s keeping their current roles.
*sigh* I’m getting tired of Manapul being so fricken amazing…
Let me clarify … I think the Van Sciver lightning scribbles are a lazy substitute for actual backgrounds. I admire a lot of Ethan’s work, he’s overflowing with great ideas, but the speed force scribbles are not one of them. and they’re out of control. I hate to see other artists adopting that approach.
Best of all: Geoff is off and Legion will be able to be again the main feature of its book. Good riddance, Conner.
