It’s here. We’ve talked and teased and talked some more about not only the special, but the upcoming THE FIRST WAVE around these parts pretty often, but nothing beats real pages to look at. So, here we go. A first look at the BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL, from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Phil Noto:

Nice art, but I’m guessing that that’s not actually Batman with the guns.
Not a big fan of Batman with guns but I’m still going to check this out.
The art–so clean! The back-and-forth color palette (dusky yellow-brown and blue in panel two and nightclub-esque blue and pink in the latter) is luscious, to boot.
It looks really good… the only problem that I have with this is the same problem that runnerx13 has…Batman doesn’t use guns, well as least Bruce & Dick don’t, Jason Todd did & I think Jean Paul Valley used some sort of projectile but it wasn’t a gun. So unless that’s Jason Todd taking another shot at the cowl I’m pretty sure that isn’t Batman…but hey it does look great, the shot of Bats soaring through Gotham especially.
Back in the early, early days there are a few shots of him with a gun, they used to hint that the Earth-2 Batman used a gun early in his career. My problem is it doesn’t look 30’s enough. I know it’s suppose to modern/old, but a few 30ish cars would have been nice. Still gonna give it a chance.
And how come this logout thing never works?
Looks AWESOME!
As for the people saying that this isn’t Batman because he is using guns…
Do you know what First Wave even is? This Batman uses guns.
I don’t think the folks saying ‘Batman doesn’t use guns’ quite realize that this doesn’t take place in the DCU proper. Think of it as an Elseworlds-like universe, with pulp heroes, and a pulp Batman!
Can’t wait for this personally.
I like it even without the words. I’ll give this first special a go.
When Batman first appeared in the 1940’s, he was a quasi-pulp fiction hero, who did use guns as art of his arsenal. In time DC decided to tone down the violent and gritty aspects of the character by adding the lighter character in Robin to the fray, losing the guns, and developing the no killing rule.
Looks incredible! Can’t wait!
Phil Noto’s Doc Savage looks amazing.
I am looking forward to this. As others have said, this is not your regular Batman. This takes place in a seperate continuity.
Can’t wait!

From interviews I have read this is actually Bruce, the separate continuity is the means to allow it to be Bruce, but I don’t think it’s an “elseworlds” or an “Earth-(Random number)”.
I was pissed when I saw that frame of him with firearms. I’ll give the first issue a go, but I better be missing something…
“As for the people saying that this isn’t Batman because he is using guns… Do you know what First Wave even is? This Batman uses guns.”
——————————————
I don’t. Isn’t this the first issue featuring Batman? Is this the same “universe” with the Spirit? And when I said I don’t think that’s the real Batman, I meant that in that panel, maybe someone was masquerading as Batman.
Count me among those hoping that this is someone masquerading as Batman. I understand it isn’t “our” batman, that it is from a different continuity, etc., but I think that having Batman use guns robs the character of one of its key traits. It’s like making a story about a Wonder Woman who doesn’t have the lasso, and is a 300 pound fat guy wwearing Wonder Woman underoos in front of his TV. Just because they share the same name, and the same outfit, doesn’t make them the same character.
I’m fine with The Bat-Man using guns, because it fits into the motif of the pulp-inspired universe. I suspect that DC tried to get The Shadow and they were unable to obtain the license, so they used The Bat-Man instead, a character that was influenced quite a bit by The Shadow.
In retrospect, DC will probably find that the addition of their most popular character will get people to check out the series more so than The Shadow, though it’s a shame we couldn’t get the two icons of the pulp era together again. Maybe DC’s still working on the license and we’ll see him down the line.
I’m so interested in this new venture that I’m considering breaking my “no single issues” rule (the only other exception to that rule is Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Criminal, due to the backup features in that book). I would love to see the Doc Savage and Spirit ongoings with backups featuring other pulpish characters. Throw in covers by Glen Orbik, Arthur Suydam, John Watson and others that emulate old pulp magazines and I’ll be in heaven.
Well, I like the look. I think it’s funny that Batman fans are up in arms (no pun intended) over the guns. Us Doc Savage fans from days of yore were basically told by the writer “no one cares what you think and I don’t care if you read this book, grandpa.” Nice. But if he catches more flak over the Bat blazing away I’ll laugh like the Joker.
Seriously, no matter what the writer says about us Doc fans, I plan on giving the book a shot. I like the alternate universe premise, and if this Doc is as cool as he was in the pulps, then great. If not, it doesn’t change anything. The original stories are still there, and Batman’s as well.
From what I have read in other inteviews, this IS Batman. It IS Bruce Wayne. Its just not our Batman and Bruce Wayne. This is another world/universe. It is not someone masquerading as Batman.
1) It IS BATMAN….in the First Wave universe. Apparently, they are using this version since they couldn’t get THE SHADOW.
2) Like BATMAN (or THE BATMAN as he’ll be known here) the First Wave: SPIRIT book will have a separate continuity from the regular SPIRIT book.
3) GOTHAM CITY is located in California or near it, on the West Coast, in the First Wave universe.
i don’t think i like this “first wave” place :\
Leave it to fanboys to overreact to the littlest of things. Golden-Age Batman did in-fact use guns, this comic is obviously set in the 30s/40s, so how is this a problem?
@bluetongue: Not a ‘pulp’ fan eh?
I, for one, love all those old 30s/40s/50s pulp heroes… Doc Savage, The Shadow, etc
By the way, if you folks haven’t, try reading JSA: The Liberty Files and its follow-up, JSA: The Unholy Three. They’re great reads with ‘pulp-style’ takes on Batman and other Golden Age DC characters. Great Tony Harris art too!
Honestly folks….I am right up there with the biggest of Batman fans. However, what don’t you understand about FIRST WAVE!?!?!?!?!?!?
Look to the golden age of Detective, he had a rope and a gun.
Ok, thats not good enough because this is a modern comic for all you nay-sayers.
Read what Azzarello has said on CBR or Newsarama about how this is outside the DCU proper and is a NEW world. Is it part of the 52? Never have I heard it is or if it is not, however it is an out-of-continuity (GOD FORBID) DCU.
Wayne Manor is in the NOIR CALIFORNIA.
Please, read about the special and the following prestege mini to follow before you get on your soap box and denounce “The Batman” because he’s not your batman.
I will be picking this up. I will be very happy to spend my money to read about how Doc Savage and The Batman collide in a world without super powers.
Its creative, it’s beautiful art and it’s BRIAN AZZARELLO!!!
(sorry, I just feel strongly against you nay-sayers who dare not cross the status quo, get out of the box (and your parent’s house) and have some fun)
