Sterling Gates is far from a newcomer to the DCU — but he’s certainly one that’s on the rise. With his work — alongside artist Jamal Igle — redefining and stabilizing SUPERGIRL, Gates has made a name for himself for his tight plotting and knack for strong and precise characterization. All of which can be seen month-in and month-out in the pages of the Girl of Steel’s ongoing series. Not-so-coincidentally, you can get a good sense of what we’re talking about here by picking up the newly-released SUPERGIRL: WHO IS SUPERWOMAN? collection, which shows Gates and Igle slowly unraveling the mystery behind the new, villainous Superwoman.
But why stop there? In addition to his work on SUPERGIRL, Gates has expanded his reach in Metropolis and Krypton, firstly by co-writing the recently-concluded “Hunt for Reactron” arc with writer Greg Rucka in the pages of SUPERGIRL and ACTION COMICS and now with WORLD’S FINEST, a mini-series slated to spotlight members of the Batman and Superman families of characters as they team-up to face off against common threats.
The first issue kicks off with Gates and artist Julian Lopez bringing Red Robin and Christopher Kent/Nightwing together to help track down a missing Flamebird — but as readers have come to expect from Gates, things are rarely that linear, so fans should be in for a treat. But don’t take my word for it — check out some pages from the first issue below.

This looks like another really good series, I think that both the Superman families & the Batman familes have both really been getting reinvigorated since Batman RIP & Superman WONK. The supporting characters are really coming into their own right lately. Superboy is really flourishing in his title which I will miss when Dido turns it back into a Legion book. Tim’s starting to catch on as RR, & the new Batman & Robin r really getting good. I mean even Power Girl & Batgirl are fairly fun titles to read lately. The only thing missing is to give Wonder Woman some sort of time away so that her character can be missed & her “family” of characters to get legs of their own to stand on. The work that is being put into these secondary characters is realy giving them some depth as well direction. Way to go DC + Blackest Night rocks
Ohhhhhh-mannnn this looks good.
I’d hunt Tim down in Amsterdam too, if I was needing some help
DC Rocks lately
This looks really good. I just hope that it keeps up and the Damian/Guardian story kicks ass.
This definitely looks good. I was on the fence about it but now I’m sold
Thanks for the awesome preview!
I might get this cos i loved how Tim and Chris got along when Supes went to Bruce for help with a red sun watch, so i’d love to see if Gates can insert a little of that into this story.
Man, I wanted to trade-wait this, but I’m not going to be able to. Too cool for school!

Awesumness….Supes + Bats rocks!….
Red Robin looks like he has Batman’s build in this.
Most artists either draw Tim too bulky or looking like a little kid.
Looks cool, I am ading this to my pull list.
At first I had a hard time adapting to the new (third installment of) Kryptonian Nightwing and Flamebird, but this is pretty cool stuff! Just reading this preview, it really felt like a treat to me to read and go “Wait a minute, Tim HAS met Nightwing–!” I think this series looks pretty rad.
Man, that is some fantastic action storytelling in the art. Everything is sharp and crisp and clear as a bell, with great energy. Plus the colors have depth without being overly dark or muddy. Nice stuff.
It’s pretty sad how much better-designed Tim’s costume is than Chris’s, though. That’s an awesome outfit and regardless of how all this Batman Reborn stuff shakes out, I hope Tim keeps it.
my only quibble is a tiny one. been to amsterdam…you can speak english you don’t have to speak dutch there…which is good because its cacophony makes me want to cut out my tongue. Its impressive that Tim Drake knows dutch. Glad to see this modern spin on worlds finest. Will consider it. I’m blackest night saturated. I may not be able to get it right away but it goes on my wishlist
I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to Sterling on Supergirl but overall I think he’s an extremely talented writer regardless and you can count me as yet another looking forward to WF #1!!
