DC Nation on the road with Sattler part 2

Monday, October 5th, 2009

By Ian Sattler

Way to go Long Beach! I just got back up to LA from the first Long Beach Comic Con and I had a blast. The show was great, the fans were great, the guest list was great and the weather was great.

Of course you’ve heard the big news out of the show was Dan DiDio and Philip Tan on Outsiders and Geoff Johns and Scott Kollins on the Wally West cofeature in The Flash. The DC Nation panel was full of all kinds of awesome as I was joined by Geoff, Philip, Pete Tomasi, JT Krul, Sterling Gates and Mr. Bob Wayne. We talked about the popularity of Red Lantern cats, our favorite superhero movies and the many ways we could kill Lady Blackhawk. The Long Beach fans were excellent and I look forward to coming back next year.

The only thing that went wrong at the show was that I forgot to take pictures of the panel. This daily blogging thing is new to me and I got distracted when they gave me a cordless microphone to run around the room with. I tried to make up for it with these pictures of Philip and Dustin Nguyen at their tables. I’ll try and do better this week.

See you tomorrow,

Ian Sattler, Senior Story Editor DCU

Lost in the ruins of a savage city and protecting a girl he doesn’t know, the Warlord can’t even remember his own name! Good thing he remembers how to fight – or the ape-men of this forgotten world will leave him in an unmarked grave!

This issue is drawn and written completely by Mike Grell – look for it in comic shops this week.

Doug Moench and Kelley Jones return with Batman: The Unseen

Monday, October 5th, 2009

By Austin Trunick

The fan-favorite Bat-team of Doug Moench and Kelley Jones reunite to introduce the newest member of Batman’s rogues gallery in this twice-monthly, 5-issue miniseries! Horrible and unexplained murders have Gotham City held captive. Bizarre deaths have been occurring throughout the city, but the perpetrator is unknown. Even when the crimes have been committed in view of witnesses, all that is seen is a glimpse of a weird, skinless “meat-man” who seems to fade away after the crimes. Gotham’s only hope is their Dark Knight Detective, but how can Batman find and fight an Invisible Man?

The first issue hits stands on Wednesday.

Breaking: Dan DiDio and Philip Tan the new creative team on OUTSIDERS

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

By Austin Trunick

Announced today at the Long Beach Comic Con, DC’s Executive Editor Dan DiDio will be taking over the reigns of The Outsiders with star artist Philip Tan on pencils.

Here are a few words from Dan himself:

“This is an exciting time for me both personally and professionally.  I have been a fan of The Outsiders since their inception and with Pete Tomasi moving on to some very exciting projects in 2010, I have been afforded the opportunity to work with some of my favorite characters. Most importantly, this also gives me the chance to work with the immensely talented Philip Tan, and together I hope we can meet and exceed all expectations for this series.”

And what does Philip Tan have to say?

“I have orders from Dan to hunt down and skewer anyone who buys comics and doesn’t pick this up in January.

Seriously though, I can’t be more excited! Batman and the Outsiders is actually the first DC book I ever bought (and got stolen)! It will be a challenge to pick it up after Peter and Fernando’s run and continue to entertain, but Dan and I are extremely confident that we will be able to create some very exciting visual stories! There are tons of ideas that we want to play with! It is not only a huge honor for me to work on Dan’s first monthly book, but I’m also insanely giddy about being able to be creatively involved on a whole new level with this project, a level that I have never experienced!”

Check out the inks for the cover below, and check back here later this month to see it in color.

DC Nation on the road with Sattler part 1

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

By Ian Sattler

How’s it going DC Nation? This is DCU Senior Story Editor Ian Sattler coming to you from Long Beach, California. We’re trying something new on The Source this week and I think it’s gonna be fun for all of us as long as I don’t crash my car…but I’m getting ahead of myself.

For the next ten days I’m out on the road attending the Long Beach Comic Con and the Baltimore Comic Con with a stop over in Los Angeles along the way. I’m going to be meeting with our artists and writers, running panels, making surprise announcements and giving you guys a glimpse into what will be the longest trip so far in my tenure at DC Comics.

I arrived at LAX this morning on not a lot of sleep and was unstoked to see that the Santa Ana winds had the temperature up at around 90 degrees, which is just how I like it on October 1st. I got the shuttle to my rental car and I then spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out how to start it. I somehow managed to procure a hybrid vehicle and it doesn’t have any actual keys – just buttons. I opened the trunk, opened the hood, set off the alarm, opened the trunk again, broke into a sweat before I realized that the AC wasn’t on and then I finally realized that the car was already on and all I had to do was put it in drive.

I didn’t make it very far before I ran into one of my very favorite things about LA – extensive traffic at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday. A looooooooong time later I made it to the 710 freeway and decided to take a picture for this blog post. I’m not going to do this again without stopping the car first as I came very close to having the next picture on my phone being of the scene of the accident. Check out the brake lights on the car in front of me. Yikes.

I’m happily at my hotel now and excited to hit the show tomorrow. We’ve got a GREAT DC Nation panel on Saturday with Geoff Johns, Philip Tan, Pete Tomasi, JT Krul and a whole bunch more of our friends. Check back in Saturday for a special post with news and announcements. For now I’m off to read Batman #692 again because Tony Daniel is awesome.

Talk to you soon,

Ian.
