Not long ago, we showed you a few sketchbook pages from THE FIRST WAVE, featuring sketches from artist Rags Morales and notes from writer Brian Azzarello. But why stop at two when we’ve got plenty more?
Last time, we looked at the Batman through the eyes of Morales and Azzarello, as they show us a younger, more brash Dark Knight. Now, we put the spotlight squarely on the Man of Bronze and his cohorts. But don’t worry, we won’t stop there. Check back next week for more from the world of FIRST WAVE.

Doc’s got some guns on him!
He must go through a lot of shirts, everytime I see a picture of him, he’s flexed and ripped his shirt sleeves.
While I’m still looking forward to this and for the most part I like the description of Doc, the “he looks down on humanity” bit troubles me. The problem with Doc’s “aloofness” was not a superiority complex, but not being able to relate to the rest of us. He wasn’t allowed to be a kid being raised mostly by scientists, and at times he resented the fact later in the series. This is what makes him endearing. Confidence in his abilities also was tempered with humility and shyness.
Still, itching to see where this goes — and it is an alternate universe after all!
Just to add to bobj’s statement. The crew is pretty close, although Jonny is a scapper too. And how about a mention of the fact that they are all professionals and tops in their fields. Still, gotta see it. How many sleeps again?
This just gets more and more interesting
the way they describe Doc sounds like they way Batman is described in the mainstream DCU, is the Doc Savage of this universe stronger and smarter than the Batman of their universe?
good question Theozilla…
Re Theozilla. I’m going to say yes, because they have said this is a newly minted Batman just starting out. And, let’s face it Doc is Doc.
Reading Brian Azzarello’s notes, its clear he doesn’t understand these characters.
Doc is not ‘bronze’ because he’s mixed race. He’s bronzed because he is well tanned. As someone noted, he not ‘aloof’ because of a superiority complex, but because of his upbringing he’s not very sociable. His retreats to his Fortress are not know to the larger world.
Doc’s aides are ALL well known. Monk is a top-knotch industrial chemist, Ham is an Harvard-trained lawyer, Rennie is a top engineer, Long Tom is an electrical engineer, Johnny a professor. Most of them are rich, and many times are off doing important jobs. Most of them had officer ranks in WWI, so they AREN’T looked as vigilantes any more then Doc is.
