That major publishing event we mentioned earlier today? Well, here it is.
Original stories featuring Batman and Superman in graphic novel form from the biggest creators out there. But these aren’t one-offs. We’re talking ongoing series of OGNs in a new continuity, on a new Earth.
Sound appealing?
Starting next year, DC Comics will unveil SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE, two graphic novels spotlighting the most powerful heroes of the DC Universe, with their first years and earliest moments retold in a standalone, original graphic novel format, on a new earth with an all-new continuity.
Return to Smallville and experience the journey of Earth’s greatest adopted son, as he grows from boy to Superman in SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE by J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis.
Watch from the darkest corners of Crime Alley as a young boy is struck by unbelievable tragedy that will forge the greatest crime-fighter to ever stalk the rooftops of Gotham City in BATMAN: EARTH ONE, by writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank.
What does JMS have to say? Well, here’s a snippet from his first interview on the subject:
“What I’m trying to do is to dig in to the character and look at him through modern eyes. If you were to create the Superman story today, for the first time, but keep intact all that works, what would it look like?”
“It is monumental for us as comic readers to see Superman birthed for the first time,” Davis said. “It’s a privilege to realize that you’re the artist that gets to draw it, better yet having the luxury to do it in an original graphic novel. This is going to be epic!”
What about Geoff Johns? Well, we happen to have a bit from his first interview as well:
“BATMAN: EARTH ONE allows Gary and I to break the restraints of any continuity and focus on two things: character and story.”
Want more? Sure you do. Why not check out the interviews AIN’T IT COOL NEWS just posted with the previously mentioned Johns and Straczynski?

I kind of thought that this would be the most logical way for DC to forge new readers in a GN dominated book world. I am not that bad of a thinker, then. Good luck!
This is fantastic. I hope it succeeds and thrives. It would be cool to have OGNs for people to enjoy as well as comics to follow month to month. I know a lot more of my friends will get into comics this way, and I will appreciate another fresh take on my favorite characters in a great format.
Also Johns and Frank doing Batman is the best news I can imagine.

You guys had me at Johns and Frank On Batman. I Hope You Guys Introduce More Characters!
I would like to add however that this is a treatment Wonder Woman needs. I love her character but her continuity is so muddled and despite it’s critical acclaim I’ve had trouble getting into her monthly series. She fits fantastically with this concept and her absence among Batman and Superman is a bummer.
I hope this doesn’t come across as a complaint, I’m so happy with this announcement, but I hope you guys consider Wonder Woman because it seems like it just fits to me.
Ideally, all the big DC characters should receive this treatment on top of the comics they run in.
Agreed with dietel. Hopefully Wonder Woman gets something like this. I think we are already having too much Superman and Batman! Not that I’m saying that it isn’t good! Good job anyway guys! Got to love the new look for Alfred!
I wish this wasn’t being done in the graphic novel format. Several new floppys a month, I would snatch them up and beg for more. As it is, I’ll probably pass and enjoy my mainstream DC universe instead.
Good idea. I no longer buy monthly comics, and sometimes have to wait a year for trade issues (I won’t buy hardcover) - if trades are issued at all. A series of OGNs is much more preferable to me.
Geoff Johns writing Batman. The dream has come true.
Alfred looks like a bad a**. Im sold, where do I buy?
I agree with aaronturon, where is Wonder Woman’s book? She should be part of the launch.
The graphic novel idea is a good one, but I wish it was a monthly book. Maybe the introduction of these books will lead to a launch of an Earth One monthly title. Best to test the waters first than to commit to a series that is mediocre (Im looking at you All-Star line).

I was just wondering what the heck Shane Davis was doing all this time! Great to see him back. The other creators are stellar also! The graphic novel format is also a plus my only concern is the umpteenth retelling of the origin. But I guess it’s a must for this new series in order to attract new readers. I hope to see the artteam of Jose Louis Garcia Lopez and Kevin Nowlan on these books. The series is made for them. Perhaps on Wonder Woman?
Not a nit pick, just a questions, aren’t the new Earths numerical? Meaning, that this Earth is “Earth-1″, not “Earth-One”.

I think these creative teams sound excellent, and I am a huge proponent of more OGN releases. However, I just am not sure that using these excellent teams on what is, let’s be honest, The Ultimate DC Universe is the best use of their talents with the properties. Secret Origin is only halfway done and we’re going to see a new, non-canon Superman origin story?
I feel that this is a way of combating the difficulty of picking up most DC Universe titles for new readers. Because of DiDio’s idea that picking up a comic and being confused leads you to read more for comprehension, I feel that the DC Universe is much harder to dive into. How will new readers feel, then, when they read one of these OGNs and then buy an issue of Superman and find the adventures of Mon-El, or Batman to discover that Dick and Damien are facing someone who eats faces?
I have been consistently confused about some of DC’s choices with their major properties, and this only perpetuates that for me. Why not use blockbuster creative teams to tell stories that affect the character histories? Or even stories in the vein of Brave and the Bold, which occur at hazy times in continuity but don’t contradict anything? Instead we have a pocket universe that needs to be built from the ground up.
I will probably read these when they come out. I’m not trying to knock the books completely, these are just my immediate concerns about the concept.
Also, for the reader who waits for trades and skips hardcovers: Joker was released in hardcover first, and I would expect the same treatment here.

ALSO
Does anyone remember Wizard running an article about what a DC Ultimate Universe would look like? I seem to remember the Batman looking similarly, but it was maybe 8 years ago.
Great creative teams, too bad they don’t invest in this kind of talent for the mainstream DCU (New Earth). I for one am not interested in yet another telling of Superman and Batman’s origin and yet another earth. I would much rather see one of these teams doing an AQUAMAN: REBIRTH in the present DCU.
Praise be to that Aquaman comment.
Also, not to blow up this post, but I found the Batman image. Granted, there isn’t much you can do to keep the costume intact but new. Notice similar cowls and gray detailing.

Mixed feelings!
I agree with the sentiments already expressed. A Geoff Johns Batman is very exciting (especially since he is doing the RIDDLER early on), but I wish these were told on Earth-0, in current continuity. And the last thing we need is more origin stories.
I’ll definitely buy these two graphic novels. They look great. But when DC tries to suck me into buying entire series based on yet another universe, I’ll bail. When money gets tight, it’s easy to ignore stories that are not in continuity and do not affect my favorite characters.
I almost wish this was a one-time event instead of the start of a whole new “thing”. Seems like a bad direction to commit DC’s energy to.
But still kind of exciting.
-ELN
That’s great! Just what the DCU needs. ANOTHER origin story for Superman and Batman. Sigh.
Well, that’s certainly an Alfred where I won’t be able to hear Efrem Zimbalist Jr…
Oh, and is Earth-1 the current Earth? Or those are different Earths?
Wow. That Superman: Earth One artwork is breath-taking. I’m already down with both of these. Do it up for Aquaman too, please?
[...] AICN and The Source Tags: alfred, Batman, dc comics, earth one, gary frank, geoff johns, j. michael straczynski, [...]
If I have it straight in my head, Earth-1 is the pre-crisis silver age Earth. Many of the core concepts were included in the “New Earth” that represents current continuity, but it is still a separate universe where some artistic liberties could be taken. The events on Earth-1 do not affect the character’s official continuity.
-ELN
I thought that pre-crisis Earh is Earth-2.
Wow Cool!
I, too, wish to voice my hope that Wonder Woman will get a similar treatment here. She is as integral to the history of DC as Superman and Batman. These both look like amazing projects and I’m already sure I will buy both. But DC needs to keep Wonder Woman in mind when these projects come together. She is a very important character and deserves more of a spotlight. (And while were talking about WW, when will we see a major motion picture for her franchise?)
I knew this would happen - I just didn’t think this soon.
I knew that when the “original” heroes were put on Earth-0 (New Earth), that somewhere out there was a re-created Earth-1. I guess 2010 is the perfect time to reveal this world
The way I see it:
Earth-0 - Modern Era heroes that appeared on the scene in the early 80’s
Earth-2 - Silver Age heroes that appeared on the scene in the 1940/1950’s
Earth-1 - These heroes are appearing on the scene for the first time in the 21st century…where not around in the 1980’s or 90’s…it’s a brand new beginning.
Greg Rucka or Grant Morrison doing Wonder Woman would be awesome, or Gail Simone doing a continuity free Wonder Woman. I’ve heard Grant Morrison interview about what he thinks of Wonder Woman and I know he has a great handle on the character.
Grant Morrison Frank Quitely Wonder Woman OGN would be superb.

the Earth-1 Batman outfit - SOLD! I love it too.
Earth-1 Alfred - WOW! Now that looks like the Alfred the writers of the Bat-books have been trying to portray him as being.
Great!. Boris Karloff as Alfred!!!!
I think this is awesome news. How about doing Earth-2 stories as well. I would love to see a retake on Kal-L and the Golden Age Heroes. Now that would be amazing!

The current Earth in “DCU Proprer” is New Earth aka Earth-0/Earth-Zero. Ever since ‘52′, DC has been quick to correct people calling it Earth 1; leaving it’s content up for speculation.

@mikethebat:
the ALL STAR Books took place outside DC Universe continuity.
However, this Earth-1 Superman or Batman can or may interact in the current DC Universe and with the Earth-0 (New Earth) heroes.
The ALL STAR books were just a “re-telling” and have been brought to a close:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Star_Superman
This is what should have been to the entire DC Universe 25 years ago. Then we wouldn’t still be arguing about what is in and what is out and trying to create convoluted explanations for things. The regular Universe is more of a mess than now it was before Crisis.
Could OGNs be DC’s attempt at creating a product for digital and bookstore distribution that won’t harm the “floppies” that Didio is sworn to protect. Everyone but DC seems to be publicly gearing up for the digital market (if you don’t count Warner’s motion comics). Local comic shops can buy this from Diamond, but it seems like a product made for mass distribution.
Oh, my God, all the negativity and grousing about which “Earth” it is!!! Who cares? No wonder people make fun of comic book readers. Jesus, it’s depressing. Thankfully internet commenters really don’t make up that much of the buying public.
I am so stoked for this. I only buy collections and OGNs now anyway, so I am the perfect target audience. I sincerely hope this is a huge success and signals a shift in how comics are done with the big two.
Since this is Earth One, will this Superman be named Kal-L?
This is great news, I’m SO looking forward to this!

Alfred has a BEARD! WHAT.
Got to say I like the designs. But I am kind of tired of seeing Batman and Superman “reinvented” all the time. Why not characters like Aquaman? I think the debate about “which Earth this is” extends beyond fan boy-ism. It’s a way for readers to determine if this is told in any sort of existing continuity. And differentiating this from the All-Star line is a moot argument. The pitch then was “all-star” creative teams telling stories with characters unhampered by continuity. This isn’t any different, except both will be origin-slanted, as opposed to the All-Star line where only Batman (kind of) took that route.
The more I think about these, the less interested I am. I’m studying comics in college and I’m an avid fan, but my wallet does not need to be opened up to an entirely new universe when the current one is in shambles.

Secondly, can this be as close to earth one as possible? It seems a shame that Earth two kinda survived and Earth one (the best earth) didn’t.
thirdly, I appreciate starting from the beginning but this is going to take forever to get to the good stuff. I presume there will be Legion coming out of Superman:Earth One but how long until we get Supergirl, Dick Grayson, Wally West, Teen Titans. I really am just not interested in the ‘main’ guys.
Also LOL at people confusing Earth One and Earth Two
Earth 2 is golden age (1938-1957)
Earth 1 is silver age/Bronze age(1958-1986)
so would that makes Earth 0: Modern Age (1987 - Present)
and, the “new” Earth-One: New Millennium Age (2010 - ?)??

…Send them MY WAY! Just… PLEASE PLEASE don’t pull another “All Star”. This means (1)i think it’s a bit soon to even TRY to top All-Star Superman and (2)i don’t think many people want anything that even resembles All-Star Batman & Robin… but this looks so cool!!! I’m a die-hard DC fan but Ultimate Spider-Man is one of my all-time favorite series. This approach (and the format, since i’m not the ‘floppy’ buyer i used to be) greatly appeals to me! I’m glad JMS and Johns are covering the stories, and I feel like a new continuity could do WONDERS for these characters! Pump it UP!!
No, there is no ‘modern age’ earth. Although a 90’s DC earth may be cool. The second world war characters are earth 2- Kal-L. The sci fi re-inventions are Earth 1- Kal-El
Mhalteman, are you going to make the argument that ‘ages’ are arbitrary because Superboy comics pre-date the silver age? I’ll admit, I can’t remember the date Barry was introduced but Earth 1 is his intro to COIE.

More Superman and Batman origins. I love both creative teams, but do we really need more origin stories from Batman and Superman? In the movies they’ve done it about 3x each, then their tv-series, then about 10+ origins in the comics.
I pray that DC does something with Aquaman, because it’s insane on how much they support these two characters over everyone else.
I’m surprised that this Earth-1 Superman appears to be wearing briefs over tights. Any serious attempt to widen the readership of Superman comics would not pass on the opportunity to ditch them. We all know they’re a stumbling block for non-readers of comics. We’ve all heard the jibes - most recently on Heroes. So please DC editors, if you’re reading this - give Earth-1 Supes trousers, as you’ve done with Batman.
btw I am really excited about both these OGNs. The creative teams are sensational and their new takes on the Superman and Batman stories have piqued my interest. Keep them coming - Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman… (and while we’re on the subject, why not give Hawkman the ability to fly without Nth metal, by manipulating the wings themselves through “on-demand” [or "on-the-fly"] nerve and muscle connections and the shifting of weight and power from his lower body to the wings when attached; he could attach and detach the wings at will… when you think about it, the current arrangement does’t make any sense. How can he flap wings that are simply strapped on? And if they’re not serving any purpose, why wear them?)
