By Alex Segura
Superman has left Earth in the hands of Nightwing, Flamebird, Mon-El and the Guardian.
The tensions between Earth and New Krypton are slowly rising. The winds of war are stirring.
As our very own Dan DiDio has teased numerous times, 2010 is going to be a huge year for Superman. But just what is going on has not been revealed.
Until now. Welcome to the WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.
This lovely piece of J.G. Jones artwork is the cover to WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0, which will hit stands 5/1/10, as the DCU FREE COMIC BOOK DAY title, and will kick off an event that is sure to change Superman’s status quo.
What more can we say? Not a lot — we can tell you writer James Robinson and artist Eddy Barrows will be taking point on the issue — but we did manage to rope SUPERMAN Group Editor Matt Idelson for a quick tease about what’s to come. Take it away, Matt:
“WAR OF THE SUPERMEN is the culmination of literally years of stories in the Super-books, all building to a destructive conflict which can have no victors. This Free Comic Book Day #0 issue is going to show the readers that no cows are sacred, and that they don’t want to miss this event.”
Not sated? Of course not. Then swing over to TIME’s TECHLAND blog for a few more nuggets of info.

Wow!
This had been hinted at but it is great to see it confirmed. I am looking forward to the Superman Family being the focus of the DCU again.

That is a horrible cover.

That cover is atrocious. Does Superman have the runs or something?
James Robinson needs to stop be given work. He is horribly overrated.
I blame Didio.
hmmm… i quite enjoy WONK so far… but i feel this “event” is a little bit quick then supposed to be.. but well, let see what can robinson do with the story…
Oh man, this just isn’t the kind of Superman news I was looking for, especially with James Robinson at the helm.
The most immediate fear I have (beyond Robinson’s clunky writing) is the reality of how standalone titles will actually be. I’m sure that, from a marketing standpoint, it will be very hard for this not to explode like Blackest Night. The difference is that you can truly read only Green Lantern or Green Lantern Corps and feel that you are witnessing a complete story. This is more true of the latter series, but still.
Similarly, in the Batman books, you can read only one and not have to worry that you’re reading a fragment. Now, in the Superman family of books, I have strongly felt that it has been mostly impossible to read only one title and feel that you are getting a consistent and complete story. This level of crossover can really hurt your enjoyment of individual issues.
I’ll most than likely read this, but I will definitely end up waiting a month or more at a time so that I feel like I’ve read some semblance of a story by the end.
Predictable. I was hoping DC would be a little more creative with the direction of this story.
[...] The Source [...]
Sorry JG but Superman looks constipated, Mon looks 40, supergirl looks like she’s turned on and thara is so far in the back she’s cut off.
Well, this is disappointing.
Normally I like JG Jones but I don’t know what is going on with that cover. It’s absolutely atrocious.
EDDY BARROWS? JAMES ROBINSON? I know this is a FCBD title but if the store happens to run out before I can get there I won’t be sad in the slightest.
Hopefully in the long-run DC will be able to throw us some Superman curve-balls we DIDN’T see coming a year ago.
[...] will be writing War of the Supermen 0, with Eddy Barrows providing the illustrations. And thanks to DC Universe: The Source, we also have a shot of the cover created by J.G. [...]
Wow. Everyone looks like they’re just floating around, no 3 dimension. and look at Mon’s hands.
No Connor. :\
Tiiight!!
I for one, loved the cover — the aspect ratio/angle on Supes body is slightly off, but the rest looks pretty cool - love it when Supes has that rage and is ready to take names and all comers.
Robinson’s storytelling has entertained me actually and is overall easy to follow, so I don’t know what the gripes are about. It complements Johns’ very well so that the overall storyline flows more or less from one book to the next.
As for the Batman comment, I disagree — every time there’s a bat-event, there are soooo many crossovers within related books that it’s difficult following the story - so much so in fact, that I gave up following his titles anymore and just focus on Supes, GL, WW and the JLA.
Keep up the good work, DC!
Covers can be misleading, sometimes the total opposite of what is actually happening in the story. Hopefully, that is the case here. Regardless, here’s wishing for a variant, not a big fan of this cover either.
…I’m glad Conner isn’t in that mess.
I’m just hoping *some* cows are sacred. I, too, haven’t exactly been thrilled by Mr. Robinson’s storytelling, and if his Atlas story was any example, I’m concerned that with “everything” up for grabs we may end up with a Superman we don’t recognize and can’t connect to. And that’s not what I’m looking for in my Superman comics.
With “Batman Reborn,” every single title exists in its own story without crossing over (yet). Even “Battle For The Cowl” showcased different characters in each story and only vaguely linked to the story proper. All you need to know (and sometimes, not even) is that Dick is Batman now.
I’m definitely not saying that this is perfect execution either, but the Superman titles have absolutely not stood alone (with the occasional exception of Sterling Gates on Supergirl) since Johns left Action Comics.
Looking forward to this, and the small plastic piece of Kryptonite that will be given away with each issue…

Hey guys, let’s complain about a comic solely based on the cover of the promotional teaser!
Herp De Derp Derp!
They say not to judge a book by its cover. This cover leads me to disagree with that saying.
Very excited for this storyline, as I’ve been thoroughly enjoying all the Superbooks — but wow, J.G. really borked that cover.
Looking good! I for one have really enjoyed the Super-books this past year.

Oh now come on… Send that cover back to J.G. and tell him to do it with feeling next time. He’s capable of so much better. Maybe he has event fatigue too.
Damn bitch bitch bitch. i personally can’t wait for the end of a story line that geoff johns started in the one year later line and will finally come to completion next summer. Long live Superman long live DC
Did anyone who has complained about the cover stop to think that maybe it was a wrap-around, and that Alura and Flamebird and probably even Conner are on the other side? Just throwing that out there. I am absolutely stoked about this event, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for us.

TOM HANKS IS… SUPERMAN!!! ahahaha, just kidding. Anybody else see it? Anyway, the cover is deese, and I’m sure the story will be entertaining. And as for the cry of “event fatigue”… I don’t think events will go away for a LONG time. Tired of ‘em? Don’t buy ‘em! They’re (for the most part) selling like hot-cakes! Just take “Blackest Night” for example. Sure, it’s an incredibly well-done and intriguing “event”, but if that’s such a problem… maybe DC will have two in a row! Bring it on!!
I love events lets you see whats going on in the rest of the universe and see other characters like you never have/would this is gonna be awesome Robinson, Rucka, Johns Gates (all the superfamily writers) its gonna be awesome

This story could be a blast, but the copy here doesn’t make me want in on this. “…all building to a destructive conflict which can have no victors” and “show the readers…that they don’t want to miss this event” don’t belong together.
Not digging Superman on that cover either. Still, by the time this hits and we know more, this could turn out to be really exciting. “War of the Supermen” has more fun potential than “War of Earth against New Krypton” so maybe this is a good sign.
And yeah, I’m both curious why Conner isn’t at least as prominent as New Nightwing, and kind of hoping he ignores this event to go save Teen Titans.
That’s a really ugly cover up there. I’ll read it, though.
2010 news so far has been pretty meh…
Well, it’s as predictable as it possibly could’ve been but still has potential to be fun (or become next Amazons Attack). Barrows isn’t bad, his art is quite dinamic. Robinson… well, Golden Age & Starman’s Robinson it seems is gone forever, but I hope this won’t be that evil twin who’s wrote Atlas and J-U-U-U-S-T-I-I-I-C-E! Would be nicer if he’s co-write it with Rucka or Johns.
P.S. And agree about the cover. It’s probably worst piece of art I’ve ever seen from J.G. It’s so static, poses are stiff and emotions are awkward (especially those screaming/yawning people)… just poorly done. Is it J.G.’s revenge on DC for FC.
I can’t say I disagree with the criticisms of the cover but gosh some you are mean. I hope JG’s not reading this.
Oh, J.G. knows that we love him. He won’t bear a grudge with harmless annoying us.

I know I made fun of the cover (a little), but JG is a fantastic artist with VERY VERY VERY few misses in my book; this just happens to be one of them. I find it funny that his last piece of artwork featured on the site before this one had that tombstone that read “Here lies the career of J.G. Jones” or whatever… that guy’s a class act! No way do I think the cover for War of the Supermen 0 is anything to judge him by.
