If you’re a regular Source reader, you know that while we love talking the talk, we know when to step back and let a piece of art speak for itself. This is one of those instances.
Not too long ago, we announced that Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul were taking the reins of the new FLASH ongoing series next year. We also showed a few in-progress pieces of the character, too. But we haven’t shown any final, colored, 100-percent Barry Allen Flash images. Until now, that is.
Behold, the cover to FLASH: SECRET FILES AND ORIGINS, hitting in March 2010, a nice little appetizer before the epic meal that will be the FLASH ongoing. We’ll have more details on the issue in due time, but let’s focus on what you see above – this wonderful cover. We roped in Manapul to give us his two cents on the piece, and working on the Scarlet Speedster. Take it away, Francis:
“I’m excited to be starting the book. The entire creative team is looking forward to introducing new ways of portraying speed. It’s also cool that we’ll be introducing a new generation to Barry Allen as well as myself so I’ll be right in they’re shoes of getting to know this guy. It should be an exciting ride!”
Francis was also kind enough to give us a look into his process. Check out these two in-progress images.

Still loving the idea of Barry coming back the way they brought him back but Francis’s work looks like his superboy run just not as soft but def normal rockwell meets comics. still cant wait lol
It’s also got a ‘manga’-ish aspect to it — definitely captures the ’speed’ of the Flash running.
I adore Manapul’s art. I’m looking forward to the launch in 2010.
I can’t tell you how happy I was to get Barry Allen back. I like Wally and Bart and the rest of the Flash family, but Barry is special. The first comic I actually purchaed with my own money was a Flash comic book (Flash #278 - 1st series). Prior to that, my dad bought my comics for me - one book a week at the local bookstore.
I loved all the stories, and even though there were arcs to the stories back then, they weren’t the main focus, there was always another story in the fore-front. So, if you were new to the book, you could just pick up a copy and enjoy the story - the arc wasn’t the primary focus.
It would be fun to have Carmine Infantino do a special cover as a throw-back to the original series - if he’s still drawing…just for kicks and giggles. I love Manapul’s work though - he did Conner justice and puts a lot of love into his work.
Yes, Infantino-style multiple-Flash-in-series is exactly correct.
Still hoping the family death and angst that Geoff has added to the story will be burned away by the end of the arc, but I’m sure the book will be something i can enjoy, albeit perhaps with a little getting used to.
whoa that cover is hot shiz
Love it love it love it! I’m so excited for the new Flash series!

Johns and Manapul have a LOT of work ahead of them… Barry’s great, but he wasn’t there (in my opinion) when everyone was getting their character development overhauls throughout the ’90s and this past decade. He’s Iconic for sure, but he doesn’t have the depth (right now) that Bruce Wayne, Superman, or Hal Jordan packs… I know Johns is up to the task, and Francis’ art looks neat already! I encourage him to put some character and emotion into Barry, to make him (even more) relevant again! Good luck, team! The Flash has been my favorite read (barring the last couple years, unfortunately) for a long time!
Barry Allen is awesome. My first taste of hime was Crisis on Infinite Earths. I love the positivity of the character. A true hero! (At least in the fictional sense anyways) His return is a breath of fresh air. Barry Allen/Hal Jordan is a better pairing in my opinion than Superman/Batman
Will wally be in these new series or will he just make cameos?
[...] Fracis Manapul & Geoff Johns on Flash: No really new info here, but I’m definitely liking Manapul’s art. (Covered here.) Overall, I’m still in wait-and-see mode. I had hoped to have a better sense of what The Flash post-Rebirth was going to look like by now, or that Flash: Rebirth itself might have won me over. [...]
