DC Nation, it’s Go Time. The second wave of the Red Circle heroes is upon us! And with them, an array of talent so dizzying, you may need some Dramamine after this post! So hold on tight and read on!
It all begins in The Shield #5 when Marco Rudy brings the Jaguar to life as the Shield battles Nazi robots deep in the Brazilian jungle. Check out Marco’s amazing design as he showcases the feral side of this mysterious new hero! Will he help the Shield – or hurt him?
In this same issue, the Inferno co-feature gains its own strange encounter when the Comet comes face to face with our fiery man on the run! Duncan Rouleau came up with one stellar design for our cosmic character, and what Greg Scott does with it – well, you’ll just have to pick up the issue and see for yourself!
Next up is the rise of the Black Hood, found in the pages of the Web #5! Our killer guest team of new ACTION writer Marc Guggenheim and the aptly-named Talent Caldwell are exploring the impact of the Web’s unconventional approach to crime fighting and what that will mean for Mateo Burland. So far, the odds are against a happy ending!
And keep your eyes peeled for Mr. Justice floating through the Hangman co-feature in the Web #5! Once more, we turned to Duncan Rouleau to deliver a design, and he delivered strong! Just wait until you see how Tom Derenick and Bill Sienkiewicz have brought this spectral savior to life (as it were)!
(By the way, father/son writer team Michael and David Uslan wanted me to tell you all they’re working on a Mr. Justice co-feature with artist extraordinaire Justiniano, but I said it was too early to discuss that. So don’t say anything to them yet, ok?)
So that’s FOUR new characters popping up in the Shield and Web #5! And brought to you by extremely talented creators all, no less. And with JSA All-Stars writerMatt Sturges taking over the Web as of issue #6, can we even find room here for just one hero more?
Oh yes, we can.
Starting in March, Inferno will go on a four-issue hiatus from the Shield, and in its place will be running the origin story of the FOX! Brought to you by Inferno writer Brandon Jerwa and POWERS artist Michael Avon Oeming! Follow Paul Patten Jr. on his journey to unravel the decades-long mystery behind his father’s death, as he learns secrets of the Tokyo underworld and the mysterious ways of the Kitsune spirit. It all kicks off in the Shield #7 along with a brand-new mission in the lead feature! Don’t believe us? Check out Michael’s amazing designs below!
So that’s the state of the Red Circle as we go into 2010. New characters, new stories and new talent are all rounding out the latest corner of the DC Universe. Make it your New Year’s resolution to try out a new book – you won’t be disappointed by the level of quality and excitement everyone’s bringing to these titles!

Holy crap this looks awesome. I know that many of you don’t get these two books but you should! The Co-features are pretty good but the main story of each hero is awesome. I really can’t wait for this to come out. Mr. Justice and the Comet look Crazy awesome.
I’m really digging those designs, and I’m excited to see more of these characters redesigned and be ‘re-introduced’ to readers. I have fond memories of reading the Impact versions of The Comet and Jaguar when I was much younger.
I have to say that The Shield, written by Eric Trauttman with art by Marco Rudy, has been a phenomenal surprise. It’s excellent, and this is coming from someone who didn’t think he’d care for a title with a bit of a ‘military’ angle. I implore all of you out there who haven’t tried it to go pick up the back issues of the first arc (#1-3) and really give them a shot. This title is definitely one of DC’s gems and deserves many more readers.
I have also enjoyed The Web a bit as well, and though the first few issues were fairly good, I am looking forward to seeing what Matt Sturges has in store when he takes over the title.
If my other posts didn’t make it clear… READ THE SHIELD!
I’ve been picking up the Web book. I still say a Booster Gold / Michael Jon Carter appearance would be great.
I still don’t get why General Lane was monitoring these heroes in an issue of ACTION or SUPERMAN, but no further mention of why he was monitoring these heroes or if they were somehow part of his Code Name Patriot scheme…did I miss something?
This is great, but where is the Fly and Flygirl? The Fly is probably the most well-known of the Red Circle characters with the possible exception of the Shield?
Why hasn’t DC done anything with them yet? In the original promo art they had Batman and the Fly together, so where’s the Fly?
Web and Shield are both fantastic books and among DC’s best right now. I especially like the Web, though Shield is gaining. I LOVE the Comet and think the new design is cery cool. This looks promising!
Meisterlegion,
If I recall, in the latest issue of the Shield, The general in charge of the Shield project has a phone conversation with General Lane in which he tells him that the Shield will NOT be available to his little 7734 operation and that if he doesn’t like it he can talk to his boss, the President. It was a cool little scene and I wonder what will come of it.
I’m really surprised when I hear that some people are still on the fence about these books. I’ve been reading since the JMS one shots came out and I am totally hooked! Maybe DC should consider letting the Red Circle crew get involved in a big event to drive new readers in. Blackest Night or maybe War Of The Supermen anyone?
Looking forward to Matt Sturges taking over The Web, but I’ve liked the book so far. The Shield is pretty much my favorite DC book right now, and that goes for the lead feature and the back-up as well. Trautmann (great!)and Jerwa are the team to beat and funny as heck if you meet them at a convention!!
As for the new characters. Mr. Justice and the Comet are especially cool looking. The REAL winner is the Fox though. Brandon Jerwa (Yay DC! Good job getting him!) and Michael Oeming (totally awesome, duh) are PERFECT for this kind of thing. I want a monthly Oeming & Jerwa FOX book right now please!
Keep up the good work!
Robert Simon

I’m remembering stuff from the Impact! days, but how come Jaguar isn’t a female?
Is the Red Circle line only meant to attract male readers? If the Red Circle is supposed to attract male and female readers, what’s attracting female readers to the Red Circle books?
Sorry, I’m getting a bit confused by DC Comic’s Red Circle development here.
Kooster, The original Jaguar was male, it was only the DC Impact line that introduced a female Jaguar. That line is probably the best remembered, and rightly so as most of it was great, but most of the characters were pretty heavily altered from their original MLJ/Archie versions of these characters.
Kooster,
Brian L. is correct about the original Jaguar. HOWEVER you raisea good point that there should be some Red Circle women brought in SOON! I vote for Flygirl be brought in (but let’s just call her The Fly. Somehow Fly Woman just doesn’t work), but there’s also Darkling, Catgirl (possible Teen Titan?) or Queen of Diamonds.
Kooster, don’t forget there are a lot of the old Archie/MLJ/Impact! heroes who have yet to be re-introduced: The Fly, Fly Girl, Firefly, Captain Flag, Pow Girl, Black Jack, Black Witch, etc.
So there are still plenty of opportunities for female heroes in this line.
@Brian L: Actually, that was General Lane’s aide, not Lane. And yes, there are Plans Afoot.
Glad you’re liking the series!
Best,
-E
@Kooster: The original Jaguar was male, and — speaking only for myself, I hasten to add — I’ve been looking back at earlier incarnations of the characters for inspiration.
I should also note that, I LOVED the Impact! Jaguar. It was sorely tempting to develop along the lines you suggested.
-E
I wasn’t thrilled with the original Red Circle designs, but these are pretty god damn cool.
Yeah man, all the new designs for these heroes looked great!!
It’s hard to choose a fave, but if I had to, I’d say the Comet and the Fox — definitely looking forward to seeing what they do with the ‘unreleased/yet to come’ heroes.
The Shield and The Web are great books - be sure to get ‘em if you can.
Know nothing about them and unless they assimilate into the dcu a little more then they may aswell be on earth 8
I still haven’t checked the Red Circle but I’m real curious about it. Hopefully I’ll get into it soon enough.
GET… DUNCAN… ROULEAU… ON ONE OF THESE BOOKS!!! Then you will also have me on that book, since I’ll be reading it m-m-monthly.
Wildclaw, between the two titles, there have been quite a few DCU characters popping in:
Magog, Gorilla Grodd, Green Arrow, Black Canary, General Lane, The Great Ten, Oracle, Batgirl, etc.
Unless you mean seeing more of the Red Circle characters outside of their own books and in other DCU titles, then yeah, I’d definitely have to agree!
@theray: yep all my regular books I get cost me a lot of money as for the other people on the blog. I wouldn’t see any harm in these characters showing up in JLA or Superman or Wonder Woman. Any of the main books to get a feel for them. Its not like it was with the milestone characters. We all had a knowledge of Static and we wanted to know more about the others. These are characters that have just been put in the dcu with no origin mini. No JLA story or anything to explain them to people like me who don’t know them. In the new year when BN ends I may try one of these books out. but they are left on the shelf in my lcs. The web hasn’t moved for months. They can’t sell it
@wildclaw: The four Red Circle one-shots put out in the summer (written by JMS) served the role of origin stories for these characters. Hopefully your shop and others can perhaps put them in a lower-price back issue bin soon so that people can try them out at a reduced cost.
My shop and the shops in my area have been moving them quite well, from sheer word of mouth and recommendations (in store, via e-mail and on their respective websites). I don’t think my LCS’s 20% discount for pull customers hurts either!
I’m going to be very keen on seeing how they handle Mr. Justice. Considering he was Red Circle’s analogue for The Spectre, I’ll be interested to see how the two interact. Of course, they’ve made Hangman more similar to both of them in this new incarnation as well.
I will repeat my only Red Circle request.
Steel Sterling.
That is all.
Okay, Madam Satan, but that’s it.
@vinniebartilucci
I understand and accept your conditions.
-Eric T.
YEEEeeessssss!
Black Hood looks a little plain, bu the other four look fantastic! Especially the Comet!
Really digging the Red Circle and can’t wait to see it expanded upon!
Wished Black Hood looked a lot more like his Classic look.
A black hood with yellow suit, black boots, etc.
This look doesn’t get it!! Please give him his black hood back.
As far as Steel Sterling’s return… yeeesss! Please return ol’ Steel. Clean cut man of steel. There’s room for two.!!
AND… another classic hero who needs returning is THE WIZARD. There’s a lot you can do with a name like that. Some of the MLJ heroes like Firefly were not very potentially exciting. THE WIZARD was. Hope he sees the light of modernity.
AND… WHERE IS THE FLY AND FLY-GIRL?? Joe Simon got them??
There’s great potential here, with all of these heroes.
DC could use a “shot” in the arm… and these guys could just be the “booster”.!!
Here’s hoping for an exciting future for them ALL!!
Mr. Justice looking great !
Yes, the Fly would be awesome.
I’ve never heard of Madam Satan but that name is cool as all get out.
