What happens when the world’s most legendary fighter enters the ring against the world’s greatest hero?

Well, if you were around in 1978 to pick up a copy of SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI, then you know what it was like. The historic one-shot featured the Man of Steel teaming up with The Greatest Boxer of All Time to stave off an alien invasion of Earth.

Why are we getting all nostalgic about this comic? Well, if the trip down memory lane isn’t enough for you, here’s some news: DC will be reprinting the story — co-plotted and written by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams with art from Adams — in two formats: The first is a deluxe hardcover edition featuring an expanded sketch section and additional content with a new cover by Adams. For all those fans of the book in its tabloid form there is also a limited edition hardcover in the original trim-size with the complete, original cover of the landmark issue. Both collections will hit in the fall of 2010.

Stay tuned here to The Source for more news on this collection in the coming months.

HaHaHa!!! OMG! I have this!
I was like 6 or 7 years old but I remember seeing that book and begging my dad to buy it for me. I still have this oversized tabloid-book, and it’s a really good story too.

…what’s really fun is picking the people out in the crowd that are watching the fight - there is a “key” on the inside, back-cover that tells you who is sitting in the crowd and where.

Very glad to see this is being reprinted in a hardcover format. I had the original for years. I don’t think I still have it, but definitely want it in my collection.

This needs to include the unused Joe Kubert cover too: http://twomorrows.com/comicbookartist/media/spadamskubert.gif

    “complete, original cover”

As in, with editor Mike Gold not cropped off the side? That’d be so cool.

Defintely something I’d Get Denny, Neal and Mike to sign? Ali? Dare to dream.

    Great news.

I’m 40 so I saw this the first time around. Without a doubt the best Superman Story I’ve ever read. As a little black kid in the 70’s Superman and Muhammad Ali were both about as real as they could be.

The Neal Adams drawn battle with Superman vs. the Hun’ya armada is still in my mind, the definitive Superman against aliens sequence.

  15. shempvader says on :

does anyone remember a funny fact from this comic? Mohamud Ali lost his heavywait championship belt only one week before the comic was released . Leon Spinks was tthe champion when the book was released

  16. tjk16redrocket says on :

That’s hilarious but not at the same time, I don’t understand how that fact could be funny???!!!!

  17. bohemiacomicsreader says on :

    Really?!?!?! No, just NO.

  18. hondobrode says on :

I can’t believe DC pulled off getting this reprinted. I’ve still got my copy and treasure it.

Yeah, it sounded weird to me as a kid back then, but then I read it. It’s surprisingly good and luscious Neal Adams artwork throughout in huge size.
