DCU IN 2010: KICK OFF YOUR MONDAY WITH SOME MAJOR NEWS

Monday, January 11th, 2010

By Alex Segura

Alex Segura: OK Dan, I got your call, I’m here. It’s pretty early, even for us. This is a first for THE SOURCE – a live interview with you on the blog. Very exciting. What’s got you so jazzed up?

Dan DiDio: I’ll just get right to the point, Alex – we’re ready to announce everything that’s coming up after BLACKEST NIGHT.

AS: Wow, really? I’m glad I brought my notebook.

DD: And I’m happy to announce that for the DCU, after the BLACKEST NIGHT will come a BRIGHTEST DAY this April. A biweekly, 26-issue series, kicking off with BRIGHTEST DAY #0.

prev_brtst-day

AS: BRIGHTEST DAY – that’s major. Who’s steering the ship creatively, though?

DD: As you can imagine, we’re really excited by the great work the teams behind GREEN LANTERN and GREEN LANTERN CORPS have brought to our fans every month. And, we just don’t want to let go of that just yet. So BRIGHTEST DAY will be written by Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi.

AS: And both GREEN LANTERN and GREEN LANTERN CORPS will have a BRIGHTEST DAY banner?

DD: Correct.

AS: Can you say anything about the artists on the book? I’d imagine, since it’s a biweekly book, you’d need more than one.

DD: Sorry to wake you and not give you all the answers at once, but we have to save a few for later. We have a number of wonderful artists slated to contribute to the book, which we’ll be announcing soon. We can say that Fernando Pasarin will be handling the art on BRIGHTEST DAY #0.

AS: Sounds good. And we’ll have more BRIGHTEST DAY news for you faithful readers in, oh, about two hours. In the meantime, can I go grab a cup of coffee?

DD: Sure.

OMG! 26 issues! bi-weekly! Guess I have to make that same decision I had to make when 52 came out - Brightest Night or Food?

    Atleast I should loose weight.

  9. batmanners says on :

    26 issue biweekly? ouch…my wallet….
    still exciting stuff.

  10. vinniebartilucci says on :

With this biweekly mini, plus GL and GLC, we functionally have a Green lantern weekly if they set the schedule up right. We’ve practically had a Superman weekly for the last year, so this is very neat.

I’ll be curious to see if this is the only spin-off from Blackest Night. It wouldn’t be a bad idea - this is already the equivalent of two titles.

    Looking forward to more details.

  11. kgbram says on :

Cool stuff DC, thanks! My wallet is hurting though ;)

  12. captobtuse says on :

Sorry, but I don’t see why this is exciting news. In this economy, DC and their biggest competitor seem to have an “all or nothing” approach to their titles. For some of us, if things don’t turn around financially, it may end up being nothing. If DC wants my money, they need to do more self-contained “events”, more single issue stories (LOVING Brave & the Bold), and smaller arcs. I don’t know if I can commit to another year long story that encompasses several other titles, and continue to pick up my monthlies.

I realize I’m just one reader (and have been for over 40 years), and I realize that DC can’t market just to 50-somethings, and I realize that expanding into various formats and styles of storytelling gives the market a lot of options. Maybe, after all this time, I’ve just outgrown comics. But at times I feel like a forgotten fan.

  15. CATRsChris says on :

As much as I’m enjoying “Blackest Night”, sequel events are rarely as good as the original event was. I’ll stay open minded about this because BN has been quite good, still, I’d rather have a new concept than this.

  17. Ricardo says on :

I am under the impression that Brightest Day is going to be the “re-writing” of the DCU for the next few years, dealing with the consequences of the aftermath of BN. Also, there seems to be a space for a weekly title after Trinity and 52, so since DC is still a periodical business, it does make sense to reap on that.

  18. ryaztek says on :

So cool. Its about time fans had something to stand up and cheer for in the DCU!!!

  21. capthaljordan says on :

Having not read Comics as long as captobtuse has (I’m shy about 10 years lol) But I have been collecting two DC titles over the years GL and GLC. While I agree about the economy, I would rather spend my money on those two DC titles and accompanying series than say people, us, star or Nat. Enq., trash rags. Comics are cheaper that most of those publications and allot more enjoyable.

I read Comics to Escape reality and to keep my imagination active, something that especially in these times is needed more than ever. Lately Comics have become more than “funny papers” they capture the reader visually as well as mentally.

The main reason I love DC more than say marvel for example (I collected X-men too for quite a while so I am not bashing them to bash them) there are umpteen X-men and Wolverine titles (I lost count last year) same characters same pretty much everything. DC has more of a variety, yes they have multiple titles of one character (batman, superman) Plenty of cross overs but short lived and not to the extent of other publishers.

Johns, Keep up the great work and I look forward to reading the next chapter in the Blackest Night series and more so towards The Brightest Day. Lord knows we need more of those!

Johns and Tomasi working together in GL for another following year. Let’s hope the story doesn’t suffer from tireness because of the long run, but having in mind that Johns has written long story arcs before, I don’t think so.

Actually I think that the main problem will be in the art department, not because Pasarin isn’t one of my favourite pencillers(which he isn’t, but I don’t dislike him either), but because these weekly or bi-weekly events require a lot of work and organisation before they start, and we’ve all seen the editorial problems that DC has sometimes….

  45. meisterlegion says on :

I love getting the latest-and-greatest news directly from The Source! This is awesome - as much as I’ve enjoyed Blackest Night, I have a feeling that Brightest Day is going to be a lot more positive and will put the DC Universe back in order.

The only thing I’m worried about and find conflicting is that Geoff Johns said in his Twitter-tweets first that:
“All Will Be Well” -Geoff Johns TWITTER; 01.09.10
    BUT THEN, he says:
“Don’t let the title fool you” -Geoff Johns TWITTER; 01.11.10

…so I’m really corn-fused if BRIGHTEST DAY is going to be positive and good, or negative and dark, like BN.

p.s. @Gorbunov - as far as Geoff getting “burn-out” or not enough sleep. Another quote from his Twitter:
“Sleep is for suckers” -Geoff Johns TWITTER; 01.11.10

  48. chadwhitley says on :

With all of this news about “Brightest Day” ushering in a new era of light and positive storytelling (as opposed to darkness and negative…well, you get the point), I have to wonder: how do the JT Krul helmed “Fall of Green Arrow” arc and its companion “Rise of Arsenal” mini-series fit into that schema? Both sounded as if they’d fall more on the “dark” side of that equation.

  49. davdaman says on :

I don’t think this guarantees lighter storytelling. There will still be villains, wars, deaths and destruction. This is superhero comics after all! But hopefully it won’t be as downbeat.

I was thinking of reading GL in trades after Blackest Night. But thanks to this now I can’t, Brightest Day sounds too exciting to wait to read. Which means DC has made me happy about spending MORE money. Pretty smart, guys.

  51. aquafanatic says on :

This has gotta be the book Geoff Johns mentions where he’ll be writing Mera thru 2011 and has idea for Black Manta. My guess is this bi-weekly will work like 52. Takes some neglected underused characters and shines them up all pretty (like Booster Gold) or kills em (like Elongated Man and the Question). I’m sure theres a focus on Mera, but probably guys like the Atom, Firestorm, the Hawks, Hawk and Dove, etc

  52. dickgrayson4life says on :

Interesting…I wonder if there is a prophecy about the Brightest Day in GL lore. If there is then the Blackest Night was a necessary evil to usher in the probable return of some of DC’s note worthy icons.

In brightest day, in Blackest night…Hmmm.

  53. thecoyotegospel says on :

Nice of you to notice, chadwhitley. I always feel like DC does a poor job of setting line-wide changes in effect, with One Year Later being a very strong exception. I think the majority of BN tie-ins have made poor use of the event and have harmed its storytelling as a whole, but when other books try to play off of it, it seems awkward and confusing (the quick quips about the events of BN: Superman in Superman). I’m already nervous for this becoming tie-in city because of the success of the December tie-ins that shipped with rings, but I’m sure that there will be incongruous books like the disgusting direction that Cry for Justice is sending some characters in, and we already know Superman and co. are not going to be having a good summer.

Marvel hate is abundant here, but when they have an event, the line is affected as a whole, which makes the universe cohesive. I will say that DC, probably because of the AOL-Time Warner support, have done a much better job at keeping titles at $2.99, and I have to expect that Brightest Day will keep that price point as a biweekly series.

  54. thecoyotegospel says on :

Ok cool I will buy this and whatever comes along with it. But is this really what is needed? There have been to many super events lately, and I think people are getting tried of these huge sweeping stories. Why can’t there good solid stories that are one or two issues long? I love the Blackest Night story lines and it would be silly of me to think the there would be nothing come out of this but do we really need another year long story arc? Oh and I will need a White ring to go along with the others I have.

  61. Kooster says on :

I’m personally very excited about Brightest Day! Almost as awesome as having Superboy in Tiny Titans.

So, as other people have asked, was Brightest Day original envisioned or is this just trying to keep the momentum going?

Dan Didio, after issue 0, is this the super-secret project you gave to George Perez? Or is this the super-secret project you gave to Kevin McGuire?

  62. nomoredidio says on :

Yawn. Enough of the freakin’ crossovers.

  63. thecoyotegospel says on :

Thinking about this more, I’m wondering why DC couldn’t simply organize a push to blanket the books under a loose direction (yes, a la Dark Reign) to keep the momentum going. I know everyone here loves to hate Marvel, but look around…. Is there a “Dark Reign” mini? No. It grew from an event, it geared the company in one direction, and it is coming to close with an event. Minis popped up to take advantage of the direction, but there was no single book you needed to read (and don’t bother arguing Dark Avengers, because that title was always more of a guilty pleasure than a must-read). I wonder why we need a biweekly series to cover material that feels like it should be covered in Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps. Then again, we’re all just speculating. Maybe the final issues of the event will blow us away and really call for this, but it seems like forced bloating right now.

  64. legionoflinks says on :

i started reading because of the return of hal and i love the comics as much as everybody else but Green Lantern has been on the forefront of DC all year long. Johns is a great writer and the issues have been great but what DC needs to do is not so much devolop a single comic series as being their best and brightest at the expense of the others, which im not saying has happened. when blackest night hit i knew they were gonna do this because its the only logical way to go but i didnt want a mini-series. all this is is DC holding n to the success of a single comic to keep growing. they need to do more of whats happening this year, have a major character in a groundbreaking storyline, WAR OF THE SUPERMEN, and also have a lesser character in a groundbreaking storyline of his own, RISE OF ARSENAL. BATTLE FOR THE COWL defined a greater standard for BATMAN-titles and BLACKEST NIGHT has done that for GREEN LANTERN. these have been the best selling comics of DC and they should take a page out of their own book to realize that other characters make great comics too.

I figured this would happen a while back.. I love the concept. I wonder if the White ring is separate or if its a combination of a lantern wearing all the rings like when Jordan wore the Blue and Green and was both colors at once.

New Prediction: Brightest Day and Blackest Night were Johns way of mass resurrecting every major character without having to write a Secret Origin for all of them. I forsee Aquaman along with anyone else who lost a heart in Blackest Night to be risen by the white light, the light of creation. We shall once again see the Dibnys, the Hawks and Hawkman/girl etc. I look forward to 2010. I wonder if Superman will be a Brightest Day book since War of the Supermen is taking place…. Thought!…. Jor-El, Lara, and Zor-El resurrected as well…
