By Alex Segura
Not a whole lot. But we’re gonna try anyway.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST.
Keith Giffen.
Judd Winick.
Two writers with a knack for sharp wit, dialogue and compelling stories. Oh, and Giffen’s got a history with the Justice League, doesn’t he? And Winick’s got the snappy dialogue and a gift for the gab. Hm.
We can show the snazzy Tony Harris cover you see above, but we can’t say anymore. They can, though. How’s about it, guys?
“It didn’t really hit me until last night when I woke up screaming,” Giffen said. “They’re back in my life. Be afraid, Judd. Be very afraid.”
“Most of my best work has been driven by fear, so it takes the edge off to have it all this anxiety out in the open,” Winick said. “But mostly what Keith and I are trying to say about this book is that we’re NOT SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK. Yet. Stay tuned.”
Not saying anything? Doubtful. Swing on by NEWSARAMA to hear what these gents have up their respective sleeves. Maybe.

After a bunch of meh announcements (for me anyway) yesterday, finally something that piques MY interest.
Nice…
Nice! And I believe that blacked out figure is the first post-Blackest Night appearance of the Martian Manhunter !
Booster’s not looking his handsome self but this is something I’ll pick up. Guy will be in this right?
RIP TED KORD
I was SO excited to see this graphic pop up.
And then I noticed Judd Winick is co-writing. Ouch.
Booster looks like the artist used a Beetlejuice-era Michael Keaton for a model. Look at the eyes/nose.
THERE IS A GOD!!!
hmm this is meh for me was never a fan of the JLI so for all u fans who grew up in the 80s and 70s have fun with this one lol

Hmm, Giffen and Winick? What happened to DeMatteis?
If the hidden person is J’Onn J’Onzz reborn, then where’s Guy? Is Giffen already getting restrictions on why DCU characters that he gets to play with?
I’d personally love to see if Giffen and Winick got to write Doctor Fate into this one! And if no one’s using him, where’s Captain Whitebread?
NO NO NO! Dear God No…Tony should not be drawing BOOSTER GOLD - that looks nothing like him.
Please Don’t.
I knew I wasn’t gonna be the only person noticing the Keaton-ness of Booster.
I have no doubt I’ll enjoy this, but there are at least three (check that, four) VERY important members of the JLI who I don’t believe will be available. I would LOVE to be wrong about that, however.
… why does Booster look like he should be on Jersey Shore?
Booster is a good-looking, sexy stud playboy - not geeky, nerdy looking dork-face. He was the Quarterback of his football team in the future. Please don’t represent Booster this way after the years of work to make him into a hero and now we’re taking 10-steps back to make him a bumbling idiot again…this is just wrong!
I know it’s being said that’s J’onn as the shadowy figure, but whenever I look at it, I see a black line near the top and down the centre, plus those little black curved bits that used to be above Ted Kord’s glasses. So for me, that’s more like Ted in there. The question for me is whether it somehow means he’s back or whether the missing member hangs over the group like a shadow.
Of course, unlike J’onn Ted’s Black Lantern corpse has already been put away, so that’s a factor against it being Ted.
I had no interest in this until I read the Newsarama article, many important details there, go check it out.
They pretty much spilled that the blacked out figure is Blue Beetle. Also, its bi-weekly, alternating w/Brightest Day and Tony Harris is only on covers (whew!, love the guy but this is not the book for him)
It should have been JM deMatteis, but I do agree that Judd Winick might be a good scripter for this one. And great Tony Harris cover. Hopefully, we will see Ted Kord back, since Identity Crisis was a clear mistake of a story.
What happened to DeMatteis?
According to Giffen in the Newsarama article, the two of them will be writing Booster Gold with Chris Batista on art!
“Is Giffen already getting restrictions on why DCU characters that he gets to play with?”
Well he was restricted when he first re-launched Justice League, and we saw how well that went. I have faith.
[...] Comics announced on The Source this morning that Keith Giffen and Judd Winick will team to write Justice League: Generation Lost, a 26-issue [...]
Everyone is crackin on how funny Booster looks. How about Fire? That is the ugliest Fire I have ever seen!
I had to register after seeing this cover. I normally love Tony Harris’ art but wow…. this cover…..
Wasn’t Bea/Fire a Super-model? When did Kathy Griffin join the team?
Whwooh, I was worried this was a past-set story until I saw Fire’s costume (not that editorial has been all over keeping cover artist informed of costume changes — re: Everything coming up for Green Arrow). I’m pumped to see Captain Atom out of Robinson’s hands and moving away from that godawful Countdown era for the character.
I’m optimistic about the writer pairing. Winick and Giffen are both well known for being really hit or really miss, so I expect the two to balance each other out on this passion project. I’m also seriously hoping that Jaime Reyes gets a shout out in this!
Speaking of other characters, that Giffen/DeMattias/Batista Booster Gold has me pumped. Once that begins shipping, I’m going to consider getting the back issues of the title. I’ve passed the entire time because of a disinterest in the character and the classic art style, but Batista blew me away on The Last Days of Animal Man and I’ve been eagerly awaiting news of his next assignment.
This sounded like such an awesome comic until I got to Judd Winick.
I’m not buying this book.
Well, usually I tend to ignore the books of these writers, since Giffen writes probably most lifeless dialogs and Winick has no idea about pacing or good story. But if Giffen will be in charge of plotting and Winick only for scripting maybe there is a chance that they might do not suck this time.
And yay for JLI!!!
Best. News. Ever.
Ted Kord please.
The guy who stole the JSA’s eyes over in All-Stars apparently came and stole Bea’s too. At least Ice has eye-balls, and of the characters drawn is the only one that actually looks pretty good. I’m glad he’s only the cover artist. Hopefully the interiors are better.
I’ll throw my hat into the ring saying the shadowed figure is Blue Beetle - just not sure that it’s Ted. It might be Jaime. Those three characters met him (with Guy) in the last Blue Beetle title. And since Giffen started that title up, and Didio said we’d be seeing Jaime prominently in the DCU even though the co-feature in Booster Gold was going away….this might be what he meant.
I’ve been mostly miss on Winnick’s writing (still holding out that Geoff Johns will rescue the Marvel Family from the travesty of Trials and from Morrison’s Final Crisis), but I’ll give him a chance since Giffen’s on board.
And I actually shouted out loud YES when I read Giffen and DeMatteis were taking over Booster Gold.
My decision to drop Robinson’s Justice League just got a thousand times easier. THIS is the Justice League book I’ll be getting.
I was about to say “Do.Not.Want.” but if that’s Ted…
Reasons why I didn’t want:
1: No Maxwell Lord ever again. Thanks DC.
2: Winick. Enough said there.
3: Giffen hasn’t been wowing me with his Doom Patrol/Metal Men Work.
4: Cover looks really bad.
I’ll need to wait until I see more but if Ted is back then…
I’m glad to hear BOOSTER GOLD might pick up a few new readers…but at what expensive. I’ve very pensive that Giffen will just go off on a tangent and not follow the theme/main storyling that Geoff Johns and Dan Jurgens have built for Booster since 2007. I don’t want to see Booster drawn like he was characterized in his Justice League International days - he’s matured and his character has evolved since then. To regress is a retcon of everything the readers/fans of Booster have seen develop for him.
Dan Jurgens writes, pencils, and often does the covers for Booster - HE CREATED BOOSTER…why is he leaving and why haven’t I heard about this?
Giffen on JL? Awesome. This art? Meh. Not overly find of dark, painted covers. It’s one of the major problems Marvel currently has. Especially on Giffen-era Justice League– it should be bright and light. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more preview art before up- or down-grading from “Meh.”
Jurgens’ departure was mentioned on Newsarama a couple of times, and presumably on a few other forums. No one has said much about the why, but given Booster’s prominence in this project and the timing, I’d bet that that has something to do with it. None of the other characters mentioned so far for this title have their own books, so having one of the writers also writing THAT book probably makes coordinating much easier. That’s probably why it’s both Johns and Tomasi on “Brightest Day”, so that they can easily tie in both GL and GL:Corps.
While Jurgens created Booster, the maturation of the character into his current form owes a lot to Giffen and Johns from what came out of “52″. They’ve kept pretty mum over how much was contributed by each person involved in “52″ and Giffen’s involvement was apparently just the breakdowns, but he’s obviously aware of the direction the character has been going in recent years. And no offense to Jurgens, but more people knew Booster from Giffen’s JLI than from his solo title or Jurgen’s short run on JLA.

Ted or Jaime?
Michael or Daniel?
Where is Supernova?
Happy to see Fire & Ice back.
Captain Atom is the man!
Rocket Red?!? I hope it’s Dimitri, but it would be fun if it was his wife or one of the kids.
Whew! After the announcements for Brightest Day I was scrambling to adjust my comic budget, trying to fit a bi-weekly in and still have some reserves for other future projects. When I saw the teaser post for JL news, I thought, “Oh great, what else am I going to have to fit in?” Fortunately, I can pass on this one. That’s not meant as a slight to Giffen, Winnick, or anybody else, these characters just don’t grab my attention. For those of you who’ve been around considerably longer and are looking forward to the return of the JLI, enjoy.

Must buy for me.
Giffen + JLI characters? Yes please.
And if Winick can bring what he brought to Barry Ween? Cool beans.
Thanks for the tip @Capmarvelfan - did it say what Jurgens will be working on in 2010 for DC?…I know he’s been working over at Marvel too.
It looks like this might be the book that brings the THUNDER Agents into the DCU based on the logo in the background.
Best news I’ve heard in a long time
[...] today announced Justice League: Generation Lost as a 26 issues bi-weekly series. It is the same format as the Brightest Day series announced [...]
Kamandi2 might have just gotten a No-Prize. I kind of thought Giffen would tackle the THUNDER Agents (I think he actually worked on it for a while in the 80s?) - because the tone of the book really suits him. Considering this is NOT a monthly book, but a bi-weekly event, this might make some sense.
And I kinda hope Booster Gold will morph into the lost BLUE & GOLD book that never happened.
Oh! Remember: the THUNDER Agents were a UN sanctioned super hero group. Very much what the JLI used to be.

Interview excerts - Dan Jurgen by CBR (Comic Book Resources)in May of 2008…(and why I’m terribly worried that Giffen will DESTROY Booster Gold):
DJ: My theory is that when I write a book with a preexisting character, I take a look at what makes the character click, and chances are you will find it within the first thirty or forty issues because that is the truest example of who the character is.
While it’s true that we’ve changed up some of Booster’s elements — he’s a time cop now –in terms of who Booster is, it’s still very consistent with who he is from issue #1. A lot of times, when things are restructured, it turns into a mishmash because there are too many hands in the pot, and what made the book special in the first place is thrown out.
I don’t want to sound egotistical when I say this, but the book also has a creative team that gets it. There are far too many titles out now where, by the third issue, there is another artist on the book! That interrupts the ability of the creative team to fashion an identity for the book in the marketplace. Because Jeff, Geoff, [inker/finisher] Norm [Rapmund] and I have been there since day one doing every panel of the book, there has been a consistency to it that has always been an underrated aspect of what makes a title work.
CBR: How do you feel when you see things that you set up years ago, especially within the DC Universe, being used today? In essence, seeing toys you put into the toy box being played with by others?
DJ: It depends on the example. Overall, it’s cool to know that you, as a creator, created something of value that is still being used today. On the other hand, sometimes you see things happen that might trash things that you did earlier, or make adjustments to it that are not appropriate. It’s at that point where you say “Couldn’t you have created something on your own instead of ruining something I did?” That’s rare though. The more common reaction is that it is cool to see something come back.
Between this and the Birds of Prey announcement, I’m starting to feel like DC is reading my mind. Can’t wait to see how this turns out.
PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE find a way to bring in Guy Gardner!!
