By Alex Segura
You’ve read about BRIGHTEST DAY and the titles that will be waving the banner starting in April, like THE FLASH, TITANS, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and the just announced GENERATION LOST. But that’s not all.
Starting this Spring, writer Gail Simone and artist Ed Benes will reunite to launch a new BIRDS OF PREY series. As many of you can recall, Benes first made a splash in the DCU when he paired with Simone on the original series. And guess what? He’s gotten better. Check out the artwork above if you’ve got even half a doubt.
But Alex, what’s this new incarnation have in store for fans, you ask? We can’t tell you, but maybe Simone will. Here’s a snippet from her first interview about the gig:
“I am really excited and I missed those characters terribly. I miss almost every book I’ve ever written, but the Birds have a special place in my heart and brain.”
For more from Gail, head over to AOL’s COMICS ALLIANCE blog for a full interview on the new series.

Joygasm!
Fantastic!! This makes my day. Gail Simone had an amazing run on the original BoP.
That’s definitely Dove, and this is probably Gail’s mea culpa title when Morrison takes on WONDER WOMAN.
This is still a great announcement!

My neighbours will have to excuse me while I go outside and scream with ecstasy for an hour, at least.
It’s fraggin’ time, I say.
Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite book with my favorite characters back where they belong written and drawn by the perfect creative team!! EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is great news..i still abhor the costume on the huntress…
the link for aol coverage doesn’t have the “full interview however
And with this, my year has been made.
Best news this year.
My first thought with this news was one of relief. Sadly, Black Canary has not been treated well after all the work Gail did to build up the character into a confident, integral part of the DCU. Hopefully back in her hands, Dinah will have the chance to star again instead of being relegated to Green Arrow’s backup character.
Since Gail left Bird to do Wonder Woman, it does make one wonder if she’s giving up a title. I’d rather it be Wonder Woman instead of Secret Six, since I read the latter and not the former.
I wouldn’t be too sure that’s Dove. That looks awfully like a bat-scalloped shape cape. Maybe Stephanie as Batgirl, or Misfit in a new costume. And note the car with the red, bat-like motif on it. Even though she drives a motorcycle, maybe it belongs to Batwoman?
The shape between Huntress and Lady Blackhawk looks male. I love waiting to see some of the rumors that will be teased about this one.
Great news. Gail’s BOP was always a great read. I honestly can’t think of an issue I didn’t enjoy.

[...] Great, great, great news. [...]
Yeah, this is really good news. I was only on board for the latter portion Gail’s run of the original BoP and was pretty bummed out when the series ended.
I’m excited about the mystery characters in there too. Dove would be a perfect addition to the other “Birds” but I have a feeling Geoff Johns has other plans for her with Brightest Day.
Definitely glad to add this to my pull list!!!
You Go Gail!!!
[...] The Source (DC Comics Official Blog) has news of the return of Birds of Prey! You’ve read about BRIGHTEST DAY and the titles that will be waving the banner starting in April, like THE FLASH, TITANS, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and the just announced GENERATION LOST. But that’s not all. [...]
Is it just me, or am I making out Red Robin and Batgirl in the background?
Looks good. Gonna have to do some major shuffling around this year with everything from DC
Maybe this where Cassandra Cain is going?
Glad DC realized they made a mistake eliminating this title.
Hope Gail doesn’t leave WW.
That better not be Batwoman! This book will be “Buttshots of Prey” with Benes on art.
Gail better not leave Secret Six.
Two Words & Six Exclamation points- WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!
[...] has announced a return to the Birds Of Prey, DC’s primary-female (plus Nightwing, every once in a while) [...]
Nice! Cool that Benes is back too.
But I hope this doesn’t effect Gotham City Sirens somehow…
It seems to me (and this is alot of conjecture on my part) that if this is going to be a “Brightest Day” title, than the blacked out characters are secrets because of their involvement in Blackest Night. I think that this means that they are currently dead and / or Black Lanterns. Because of this and her past connection to BOP, I think the hulking figure between Huntress and Zinda is Big Barda. I’m less certain about the flying figure, although Dove is what came to my mind immediately.
Just what we needed. Another comic book filled with thongs.
“Just what we needed. Another comic book filled with thongs.”
You speak the truth, my faithful Indian companion.
I just looked up “Awesome” in the dictionary, and it linked to this page.
Great news, but Benes? He’s the reason I’ve dropped so many titles.
Birds of Prey is back! Great news!
How about Dick Grayson’s Nightwing returning and Tim Drake as an adult Robin instead of Red Robin? “Red Robin” makes me think of Kingdom Come and Countdown. Doesn’t feel right for Tim.
All I can say is YES! Missed this series and these ladies all hanging out together.
Gail & Ed, with Nei Ruffino coloring things? Yeah, this one’s added to the pull list.
Since it’s the same writer, artist and characters, can we have the old numbering back, too?
“Just what we needed. Another comic book filled with thongs.”
Can we leave a piece of cheese out to go with the prudish flavored whine?
For gods sake, these are super hero comics. This is the way it works. Lots of tights and lots of skin.
Get over it or start a support group for the lot of you that gripe about Powergirl & Donna Troy’s boobs and now this. Let me know where you meet and I’ll send you a box of tissues.
The shadows are Hawk and Dove. Post Blackest Night would anything else make sense in a book titled “Birds of Prey”?
I personally think the capped person is Batwoman. I think the big red bat on the car kind of gives this away. If the caped heroine is Batwoman, I’d love to see how the other Bird interact with her!
I’m not sure who the big hulk-like person is.
I’m happy to see Bird of Prey back, but why did the title have to be cancelled and relaunched? Is this book numbering being reset back to 1? Or is the book numbering picking up where it left off?
YES!
And the Hawk & Dove idea theory is interesting– I’d love to see how Hawk (hopefully Hank) deals with being on a team of women.
I’d really love the upper blacked-out character to be Cassandra Cain, but that’d be a good turn for the character so it probably isn’t her. I’d still love to see her in the series and it would address the gaping plot hole that her former mentor doesn’t seem to care at all about her anymore.
“Just what we needed. Another comic book filled with thongs.”
First - don’t be silly, you can never have enough thongs. Or boobs for that matter.
Secondly - yeay, more Huntress!!
And thirdly - Black Canary is back, no one else writes her as well.
So glad to have Simone and Benes for another round, they really produced a memorable run last time. As for the mystery characters - no clue on the dude, i think the caped woman is probably Batwoman (they interacted nicely in a recent issue of Detective) but Cassandra Cain is certainly an interesting and underused possibility.
I’m with @Kooster above - I can see why NIGHTWING & ROBIN books were cancelled, but I’m foggy on why this book ever got cancelled. If anything, it could have been more of a springboard book for the new Batgirl.
If Batwoman comes over to this book, I will add it to my pull list. I’m shocked though that just as I was starting to get interested in WONDER WOMAN again it’s going to get a “Morrison-treatment”, although, he has done good on BATMAN & ROBIN, maybe he’ll win me over eventually.
And why not Red Hood and Scarlet ? I don’t know why Red Hood can be on that cover but that’s work. For Scarlet, I very not sure but that work with Red Hood, but that girl look like have a bat cape and the same Hairstyle than Dove, but only Geoff Johns uses her. And for the car it’s the one of the new Batman and Robin. I don’t think Batwoman et Batgirl can be in, they have already their own titles, but for some issues why not.
Lynks (french and big DCFan)
runnerx13 says, “Great news, but Benes? He’s the reason I’ve dropped so many titles.”
Funny, I feel just the opposite. Great news, and Benes? He’s the reason I’ve loved so many titles. Thought he was great on JLA, and look forward to having him and Gail back together on the Birds. This is exciting news.
Oh, and the shadow figures are Batwoman and probably Creote.
Fantastic news. As for the shadowed characters, I’m going with Creote and Bette Kane as Flamebird.
I like this version of the Huntress costume, but I’m still waiting for the day when a colorist gets it right. So close this time, not as bad as it was when all of what was clearly skin from the drawing, was colored as part of her costume. This time they just got the upper arm wrong. Someone needs to pass around a color guide for that character to some of the colorists or something.
I really hope that Hawk and Dove arn’t on the team, then I would have to buy this.
Yes yes yes! I was super bummed when this title was cancelled, and now it’s back!
Since others are taking guesses at who the shadowed figures are, I will too: Dove and Hawk (a newly resurrected post-Blackest Night Hank Hall). Don Hall revealed to Dawn that Hank could still be saved after all (in BN: Titans #3 I believe). Plus they fit the “Birds” theme.
This is exciting news. I love Gail Simone, but I never picked up the first series and I’m not a fan of Wonder Woman. I’m not a Benes fan, as I’ve read how he inserts so many butt shots per comic and is a little too Liefeld-esque in his portrayal of women, but it could be worse. Yes, it’s a super hero comic. No, that doesn’t mean respect has to evaporate. There is suspension of disbelief, and then there is realizing that some costumes would immediately let loose their “contents” if the wearer turned sharply. Anyway, let’s just hope Greg Land doesn’t get a run on this to match his run on the first title.
Hawk has a LOT of baggage that would need to be worked on before he could become a useable character, IMHO. It’s a nice idea, but I’m not sure how well it’d work.
Of course, Gail could make Percival Popp the Super Cop a viable character if she had a mind to.
Soooooo happy. Last year REBELS (LEGION) returned. This year Suicide Squad had a last issue, JLI is coming back and now BoP. Every comic I loved that has been cancelled is making something of a return. Find a place for Manhunter (after her co-feature ends) and I’ll be eternally happy.
Oh and a permanent return for Suicicde Squad.
BEST COMIC NEWS so far this YEAR!!
I’ve never read the original BoP, but I have picked up the occassion issue of Gail’s run on Power Girl & I’ve found it pretty entertaining. If this book is in the same type of style then I can see picking up an isse here & there. I really like the fact that they are showing the Batmobile & implying that there will be some overlap with the rest of the bat books. As for the blacked out characters best best would be Dove as a part of the Brightest Day & maybe Red Hood to work Jason Todd back into the Bat books by trying to be a hero with Oracle giving direction… who knows.
[...] Hier klicken! [...]
“First - don’t be silly, you can never have enough thongs.”
So true. MORE MEN IN THONGS!
Birds of Prey, woo! Benes, boo. Where’s Misfit? Hope Gail gets rid of Huntress’s belly window. And uses Infinity.
Seems to me like too many of you are assuming that’s a Batmobile - much less “the” Batmobile. If that were a giant bat symbol on the hood, don’t you think it might be centered a bit more? There are likely at least one or two more of the pointy things on the top of it behind Blackhawk’s leg and behind Canary. If so, not a real stretch to see similarities in that imagery to that of Hawk’s costume.
I think it’s Dove and a resurrected Hank Hall.
I really hope she’s not leaving Wonderwoman. She made the title the powerhouse that it is

[...] The Source announced today Black Canary will get her old team back in 2010. Birds of Prey will be relaunched as part of DC’s Brightest Day “event.” This book not only brings Black Canary, Oracle, Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk back together but it also reunites writer Gail Simone with artist Ed Benes. Plus this book frequently guest started JSA related characters like Wildcat, Manhunter and even the first appearance of the new Judomaster. I can’t wait for this! deunen was right on the money calling it ‘Buttshots of Prey” with Benes on the art, but if he reins it in a little than this will be some of the best stuff coming out! I remember buying BoP #1 and actually finding a female-only concept in comics INTERESTING and FUN! So glad it’s coming back. It’s MORE than just thongs! …and boobs!
Goodness, this is good news. I miss Oracle and Black Canary and look forward to them being competent and written in character again. Thanks DC!
I also hope that’s Cassandra Cain in the shadows - she’d make a fine addition to the team.
EXCELLENT NEWS! Gail’s first run on BOP is one of my favorite all-time runs by a single writer on an ongoing title. I know it’s a lot of work but I hope she can continue on Secret Six & Wonder Woman as well.
I wonder who the inker will be? Alex Lei was a pretty good fit. I know Benes inked himself a lot on Justice League of America but in my opinion the overall work suffered as a result.

Nope, that’s THE Batmobile from the current run Dick and Damian are using, that has flight capabilities. The red bat-shaped windshield is a dead giveaway… and if it’s not, then they made whatever car that is, look WAAAAYYY too much like the current Batmobile.
Man, just when I was looking to lighten my load, and looking forward to a lighter load come spring when all the Blackest Night tie-ins are done, this comes out.
Still awesome, though, I love Simone’s writing.
