DCU IN 2010: GO BACK TO THE FUTURE WITH PAUL LEVITZ AND THE LEGION

It’s simple, really. When readers think of the Legion of Super-Heroes, they think of writer Paul Levitz. Specifically, they think of Levitz’s groundbreaking work on the series, which included the epic “Great Darkness Saga” — a story that helped modernize comic book storytelling and story structure.

Well, he’s back.

This Spring, Levitz will team up with rising star artist Yildiray Cinar to launch LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1, telling tales of the far-flung future, featuring your favorite Legionnaires – every month.

Wait, you want more? Sure, we can do that. Here are a few more sketches from Yildiray which should give you a sense of what the future will look like.

But what’s Mr. Levitz have to say about it all? Let’s ask him. Paul?

“It’s such fun to be back in the future, blowing up planets, undoing Legion marriages, revealing unrevealed factoids, and starting improbable new relationships. If there’s a better job in comics than writing the Legion, with its vast cast and creative opportunities, I’ve never held it.”

So what does this mean with respect to Adventure Comics? Is Levitz still writing it? Will it still feature the Legion or is it going to someone else in the Super-family?

  2. vinniebartilucci says on :

    Here’s my money.

This has been a LOVELY week for news. And from what’s implied, yet more to come.

  3. ericducos says on :

I was halfway sold w/Levitz on Legion but Yildiray Cinar on art? Now I’m really stoked. His pencils get better everyday and you should all check out his blog to see his beautiful sketches. This guy is good.

It’s kinda been a week of reunions huh? Johns on Flash, Giffen on JLI, Simone on BOP, now Levitz on Legion.

I can’t wait to hear Friday’s news. Loved all these announcements.

Paul dropped the F bomb you can tell he’s not management anymore! LOL

I love that cover. Look at that fine man in the middle, the rest are but his pawns.

  7. Kamandi2 says on :

I hope this doesn’t mean the end of Adventure Comics. Action, Adventure and Detective are the 3 titles DC should be publishing as long as they are still publishing comics.

I’m a bit disappointed that the new artist is keeping the Gary Frank Squadron Supreme costumes (and Saturn Girl should have long hair, lol) but the art looks good.

  8. Ricardo says on :

Dan Didio said Levitz would write Adventure Comics I think. So it’s not over yet, I guess. I still hope to see Giffen as a guest artist at some point. Or in a mini.

  9. Mr Wesley says on :

    “Writer” Paul Levitz? Slick.

  10. ericducos says on :

Looks like Levitz will write both Legion and Adventure with Adventure telling a sort of “Secret Origin” of Superboy (Clark) & the Legion set in the past (future?).

Wonder who will do the art on that?

  11. ryaztek says on :

Sweet! The good news does not stop this week. LONG LIVE the LEGION they deserve their own book.

And as far as what happens to Adventure, we do not need yet another Superman family book, how about restoring AQUAMAN to the title role in Adventure and also feature other characters like DEADMAN, the CREEPER, HAWK & DOVE,the SPECTRE and/or BLACK ORCHID and keep Adventure true to its history.

  12. Kamandi2 says on :

Just read the interview and it looks like we are going to have 2 monthly Legion books. The plans for Adventure look really good. :)

  13. querldox says on :

well, ryaztek Adventure was Superboy/Legion/Supergirl for the longest time. Decades! It was more a case of finding something that was successful than a true rotated lead

  14. Stage3evolution says on :

geeze what way to make my wallet start crying lol :) DC will be getting a lot of my money this year

  15. Gorbunov says on :

Glad to see that artist is not some “classic veteran”. Maybe Levitz return won’t turn into such a nostalgic wankfest as I did expect.

  16. JoseG says on :

    Where’s Violet & Mon-El on this cover???????

  17. Ricardo says on :

I also hope that Levitz will move closer to 5-Year-Gap Legion than Silver-Agey Geoff Johns awful run.

    YES!!! LEGION of SUPER-HEROES #1

I love that group drawing - I agree that a couple more Legionaires should be in that though - I hope Polar Boy gets respect in the New Earth Legion…he turned up in the ADVENTURE COMICS co-feature with Sun Boy, so here’s hoping.

I love me some Cos…and that purple-tint to his hair is AWESOME…nice touch. Now, if only we can get him back in that black bustier, it would be perfect. Lightning Lad…mmhmm - very good…looks good. Saturn Girl is being drawn hotter.
Overall, no complaints on the art. Looks like this is going to be a great Legion series. Not worried at all with Levitz on board.

    LONG LIVE THE LEGION!!!

  20. jgd3 says on :

Outstanding! I’m so happy to have the Legion back in monthly circulation that I feel like buying multiple copies just to hand some out on the street corner. I’ve got high hopes for Paul and Yildiray looks like a real find. Very exciting times at DC!

  28. passage34 says on :

Agree with the earlier comment about Cinar’s pencils. He has really come a long way from his early work on Teen Titans, and that wasn’t all that long ago. I think he did some fill in pages in the last issue before the Deathtrap crossover, then picked up on the other side with the Ravager stuff. My first thoughts were, “Yeah it’s better than those early pages but still not ringing my bell,” but this? This stuff looks sharp. I’m still not crazy about the cover of Teen Titans 80 (Conner’s return), but I’m beginning to think it may be a problem with the inking or coloring. Dammit, this looks like one more book I’m going to have to find the funds for.

  29. meisterlegion says on :

Can we get a Legionaire Ring with the first issue??!!

OMG - would you NOT DIE!!! That would be AWESOME!!!

  37. eldonte says on :

I am in geek heaven, just staring at the beautiful artwork. Shadow Lass looks damn hot! Who is the female character flying just below Lightning Lad’s right hand? Don’t recognize the costume….. anyways:

    LONG LIVE THE LEGION!

  38. otistfirefly says on :

And the BEST NEWS: the REAL SUPERBOY!! None of this Conner Kent crapola… PLEASE just go away CK! Supergirl and the Legion? NO!! This will be the actual SUPERBOY and the LOSH!! AMAZING!!!!!

  39. albatross says on :

…are you FOR REAL? it’s fine to have a favorite legion and superboy and all, but calling Conner “crapola” and telling him to “just go away”??? Yeesh! Most people love him and are glad to have him back! We’ll try to keep him away from your precious Legion(who I also love, but not at the expense of other characters) Long live the Legion… and Conner Kent TOO!!!

  40. isayre020888 says on :

So the Legion gets their own book AND Adventure, but Superboy is put back on a book that has sucked since Geoff Johns left it? Why even bring him back?

  41. superboy1991 says on :

If the Legion gets their own title then Adventure Comics should go back to Superboy, even if Johns isn’t writing it.

  42. kossori says on :

I always thought Legion got the worst end of the stick with the constant revamps.
So many people think that a long history becomes inaccessible to new readers so instead of breathing new life into it, they scrap it and start over.

The first time I discovered Legion was just before Crisis. Around ‘84 or ‘85. The Legion had been going over 20 years already. With no re-starts. Dan Jurgens was putting out some mean art and I quickly fell in love with the characters and their unique world.

I wasn’t put off then by their long history. It was exciting to find out things as it continued on.

The comparison of Legion to Star Trek is dead-on. It has a similar mythology. In the way that the universe created around it is it’s own. From the United Planets to the Science Police to the Time Trapper. And all the planets and races.

But instead of JLA, I’d compare them to the X-Men. They have the potential to be just as big. The major draw that X-Men and Legion have over JLA and Avengers is that 99.9% of their characters aren’t featured in any other books. X-Men has Wolverine and Legion has Superboy. Those are pretty much the only ones that are virtually off-limits to any major character changes by the writers. In this regard, Legion has a better position now than X-Men as most of their characters (due to movies and marketing) have to keep some familiarity these days. In the Legion, anything goes…

And in the hands of anyone else, I’m sure we’d see characters being killed left and right to prove this. But I have faith in Levitz. No one knows these characters better than he does.

My only regret is that there were some great themes and characters introduced in the “between” series and it’s a shame to lose them. It is, however, nice to know that they still survive on another earth and may very well appear for a team-up in the future.

I guess I can finally dust off my ‘Who’s Who in the Legion’ and get caught back up now…

  43. kossori says on :

What was the first Legion book you read?

Mine was Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes #316 (Oct. 84 cover date).
Writers- Levitz/Giffen, Artists- Terry Shoemaker/Karl Kesel.
Featured characters: Cosmic Boy, Night Girl, Polar Boy, Stone Boy, Comet Queen, Magnetic Boy, Laurel Kent and Bouncing Boy.
Subplots: Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, the two Invisible Kids, Wildfire, Mon-El and Dawnstar.
Back-up feature: White Witch and Blok.

A lot of stuff going on in there… One major story unfolding, three subplots with at least a page devoted to each one and back-up story.
