Jock teams with Rucka for DETECTIVE COMICS #861

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

By Alex Segura

Batwoman crosses paths with another “Bat”-character in this, the first part of “Cutter,” teaming artist Jock with writer Greg Rucka. And yes, the title implies that things get a little grisly.

DETECTIVE COMICS #867 hits 1/27.

How about a look at the two ADVENTURE COMICS #7 covers?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

By Alex Segura

The title is pretty ominous on its own: ADVENTURE COMICS STARRING BLACK LANTERN SUPERBOY. But what more can we reveal about the issue, which is written by Tony Bedard, with art by Travis Moore? Well, we’re not saying a ton, but ADVENTURE COMICS editor Brian Cunningham has a few choice words to share. Take it away, Brian:

“The title is ‘What Would Black Lantern Superboy Do?’ and, frankly, he says some pretty outrageous stuff, plumbed from Conner’s subconscious. In fact, we learn an awful secret about Conner that I kinda wish I didn’t know. And there is a HUGE moment in this issue that no one will want to miss. ADVENTURE #7 tangibly pushes the character forward in a way you won’t expect.”

Thanks, Brian. And now, let’s take a look at these covers, shall we? From Aaron Lopresti and Francis Manapul.

THIS JUST HAPPENED: A new OUTSIDER?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

By Alex Segura

Well, we’re hoping that by now you’ve read OUTSIDERS #26, the first issue of writer Dan DiDio and artist Philip Tan’s run on the team series. If not, you should swing down the street to your local shop and plop a few bucks down for the issue. I’ll happily wait here and do a few things in the meantime.

Back?

Well, what’d you think? The issue had team tension, rain-soaked slashing, tormented heroes and a surprise cameo. Pretty cool, huh?

And yeah, about that cameo…click below for more. “Spoiler alert,” as the kids say…

A look inside a BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM cover

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

By Alex Segura

Not long ago, we checked in with GOTHAM CITY SIRENS artist Guillem March to get some insight into his creative process when it comes to creating cover artwork for the series. The post worked so well, we thought it’d be cool to check in with another Bat-artist. This time, we got some notes from none other than Dustin Nguyen, artist on BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM. Take it away, Dustin:

1batmansogcover_thumbs

1- for this one( thumb # 1), i was approved for 2 of my 5 sketches turned in, so was able to work on them both at the same time. This was especially fun because they both allowed me the use of heavy blacks and playing with ink and quill a bit, really playing up my love for Sergio Toppi’s work.

2coverbatmansog_pencils

2- after figuring out logo placement and making sure the image would work nicely once at comic book size, i start to layout in pencil on 300lb hotpress watercolor stock. at this point, i wasn’t sure how much ink and water i wanted to put on it. so 300lb is a nice safe paper.

3coverbatmansog_bw

3- i move into inking the piece with quills and brush and a soft graywash for atmosphere.

4coverbatmansog_final

4- Finally- from the original thumb, i felt this piece would be strongest with bold crisp colors, so i opted to go with photoshop to add the colors rather than watercolor itself. The choices of classic blue and yellow is from my love of the way Batman looked in the 80′s comics i grew up on, not to mention Dark Knight Returns.

Get an exclusive look at the Geoff Johns-penned episode of SMALLVILLE

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

By Alex Segura

It’s not a stretch to say comics are everywhere on the pop culture landscape — movies, television, books and beyond. These colorful heroes are a part of our daily lives, and we’re proud to unveil something very cool — and by “cool,” I mean something special, that we’ve never done before on THE SOURCE.

As most of you know, BLACKEST NIGHT writer Geoff Johns has done his fair share of Hollywood work, including but not limited to working with SUPERMAN director Richard Donner. He’s also written episodes of SMALLVILLE. The most recent, titled “Absolute Justice” features the television debut of some of his — and your — favorite DCU heroes, including Hawkman, Stargirl and Dr. Fate.

In other words, the Justice Society of America. The first superhero team in history and one that holds a special place not only for Geoff, but for fans everywhere.

So, needless to say, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention it here. We’d be doubly at fault if we didn’t corral Geoff himself to share a few words, too. Take it away, Geoff:

“It’s the first live action Justice Society of America. Hawkman, Doctor Fate and, my personal favorite, Stargirl. But don’t expect them to be the one ones you see. Look closely in this episode. There’s more cameos and easter eggs than Green Lanterns.”

Oh, and did I mention we have an exclusive clip from the episode, courtesy of the fine folks at The CW? Click below to view. Enjoy!

The FIRST WAVE expands in April

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

By Alex Segura

Did you think we’d run out of news after two weeks of DCU in 2010?

No such luck, Source crew. In fact, we’ve got two new ongoing books to unveil, both hitting in April.

You’re all familiar with FIRST WAVE, right? The pulp-y, neo-noir epic from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Rags Morales hits in March and brings readers into a world where the Batman, Doc Savage, the Spirit and many more hard-boiled heroes stand side by side.

To further flesh out the FIRST WAVE world and give some of these iconic characters some much-needed face time, we’re launching two new ongoing series: THE SPIRIT and DOC SAVAGE.

doc-savage-1

DOC SAVAGE #1 kicks off the Man of Bronze’s very own ongoing, as Doc Savage finds himself the target of a brazen attack on New York City. And things get worse as tragedy befalls one of Doc’s allies, and it’s starting to look like someone may not survive the opening pages of “The Lord of Lightning” arc. Featuring a story from Paul Malmont, the national bestselling author of THE CHINATOWN DEATH-CLOUD PERIL, with art by Howard Porter, with covers by superstar artists J.G. Jones and John Cassaday.

That’s not all, though. the DOC SAVAGE series will also sport a JUSTICE INC. co-feature, courtesy of crime novelist Jason Starr (Vertigo Crime’s THE CHILL) and artist Scott Hampton. The first installments finds our star, Richard Benson, the Avenger, chasing down the criminals that have abducted one of his own detectives, sending Benson into an heated, unforgiving rage.

spirit-cv1

THE SPIRIT, written by Mark Schultz (Superman: Man of Steel, Xenozoic Tales) with art by DC newcomer Moritat and a snazzy cover by LADRÖNN, puts the spotlight back on Will Eisner’s fedora-wearing vigilante. What happens when the international crime syndicate known as The Golden Tree decides to help the villainous Octopus consolidate control over Central City’s criminal underworld? Well, it’s safe to say this is the kind of thing the Spirit handles best, even if The Golden Tree has offered up one of their deadliest – and sexiest — assassins to take down the Spirit.

Check out a few pages of Moritat’s lovely work below:

spirit_02and031

The first issue also features the debut of the eight-page THE SPIRIT; BLACK & WHITE co-feature, showcasing some of the industry’s finest talents interpretation of the classic hero. And what better way to kick things off than a tale of the Spirit by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Bill Sienkiewicz?
