I know, I know. We showed this cover not too long ago. But can you blame me for wanting to show it again? Especially when we have the second to show you? What, you say? The second? Yup. We figured it’d been a long week across the board, so we’d end on a high note. Specifically, Andy Kubert’s amazing cover to BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #2.
But before we show off the art, let’s check in with BATMAN editor extraordinaire Michael Marts. Take it away, Mike:
“In these first two covers for RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, artist Andy Kubert gives readers an exclusive glimpse into the mysterious realms that Grant Morrison has imagined for RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. Intrigued? And guess what—this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg!”
Sounds great. Enjoy, folks, and see you all next week for some more exciting DCU news.

Effing. Awesome.
Great looking storyline. Can’t wait.
Digging the Top Hat.
Pilgrim Batman?
justiceleagr beat me to it
i want bruce wayne to be all dark knight returns. Keep the status quo - give bruce more of an oracle role. let him mentor dick and keep damian on a leash.
Awesome, so does #1 still come out in April? It was not solicited.
I wish Morrison would just go away.
Sucks to be you docschrute, cause i want Morrison to stay FOREVER!
SO AWESOME!!!
The second looks like Puritan Batman–so late 1500s, early 1600s New England, presumably. Why the big jump from long, long ago to the 1500s/1600s AD, though? It’d be interesting to see Bruce visit some other time periods, if that’s what this series is all about… like Batman in ancient Egypt or Rome or the Moorish Empire or something. (hey, maybe he could meet Hawkman…)
I’d like to see Batman in the 30s, around the time that his parents die, maybe he could meet his young father and mother in the past kinda like what Morrison did in his All Star Superman run.
It’s “Solomon Wayne.”
Tee Hee. It’s a shame the old Hasbro-Kenner machine’s not pumping out those goofy “Legends of the Dark Knight” toys anymore… How did they miss “Puritan Batman”??? I feel so INCOMPLETE!!! Honestly, this looks really cool. I really want Dick and Damian to stay Batman and Robin, though. At least for a while… and I want them to be drawn by Frank Quitely (in some capacity, be it covers or interiors) FOREVER.
F***ING AWESOME!
@ anniemoose
the reason why the series is not taking in Egypt and other ancient cultures is because I think Morrison is showcasing different Gotham city time periods.
Great cover! I hope they give Andy Kubert some interiors to do soon.
@Theozilla - ohhh, that’s an idea I hadn’t thought of. That could be interesting. In that case, the caveman one is sort of a necessary evil to get him from prehistoric times to whenever Gotham first started, and then they’d jump straight into Gotham stories… I guess that could work.
I still think I heard something about a pirate Batman, but that may have just been speculation? I’ll have to look around and see where I got that idea from…
Aha! I knew I saw it somewhere! There’s a sketch of a pirate version of Batman here: http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2009/12/09/dcu-in-2010-the-return-of-bruce-wayne-hits-in-april/.
So… I guess maybe we’ll be seeing pirate Bats later on, then? Or was Gotham frequented by pirates at some point in its existence, in which case Theozilla could still be right?
this is terrible. the whole idea is laughable. This is an elsewhere story! Why bring batman back this way? Have his friends/teammates find a way to bring him back, him traveling through time is boring. Now on the 2nd cover it shows penguin and joker, neither where around at this time. If he uses those two in the past this could possibly be the lamest mini-series of all time. Even worse then death of the new gods.

Bat-Pilgrim! I approve.
This is stupid!

How come you signed both Kuberts for exclusives and have made so little use of their talents?
Nice covers
@murcat
I believe those are witches and not Joker and Penguin… as in “burn them at the stake” which makes sense considering Bruce’s attire and the time period.
Here’s something to consider…What if Bruce Wayne is traveling through what appears to be different time periods within the the different 52 Earths. This would explain the Batman-like motif as well as the familiar character portrayals.
This would be possible if he somehow absorbed a small portion of Darkseid’s Omega Beam (Batman is always prepared). He could use the different versions of himself that exist throughout the 52 Earths as “breadcrumbs” to find his way back home to Earth-1. The final earth that he visits could have his “real” body that was displaced by the Omega Beam.
This would tie up all of the loose ends in Final Crisis, Batman and Robin, and make for an interesting adventure that is not too reminiscent to Captain America: Reborn, although similar.
On a slightly different note; I have a a lot of faith in the creative staff at DC comics to do something more than tell the story that Marvel has already told on a “grander scale”. DC Comics are the original superheroes comic universe so it is time that Grant Morrison and others start acting like it. Say “Yes!” to my theory and no to a story about a Batman-like character that has influenced the DC universe thorough out time on Earth-1.
