Your first look at BRIGHTEST DAY — what does it mean?

The questions appear often and in variations: What is BRIGHTEST DAY? How does BLACKEST NIGHT end? And what’s next for the DCU?

Well, we won’t spoil it all for you here, but we can throw another major piece to the puzzle on the table, and that’s this amazing David Finch cover to BRIGHTEST DAY #2, featuring a certain King of the Seas. And we not only have art to show, but we caught up with BRIGHTEST DAY writer Geoff Johns to give us his thoughts. Take it away, Geoff:

“Brightest Day’ is about second chances. I think it’s been obvious from day one that there are major plans for the heroes and villains from Aquaman to take center stage in the DC Universe, among many others, post-Blackest Night. ‘Brightest Day’ is not a banner or a vague catch-all direction for the DC Universe, it is a story. Nor is ‘Brightest Day’ a sign that the DC Universe is going to be all about ‘light and brighty’ superheroes. Some second chances work out…some don’t.”

Check back tomorrow morning for more BRIGHTEST DAY news.

    That is an awesome cover - now if we could just find out who’s doing the interiors. I imagine it will be at least two regular pencillers and occasional help and a slew of inkers. I hope the main guys can kinda sorta keep pace with the promise shown in Finch’s covers. I’m already a bit concerned because Fernando Pasarin is doing the 0 issue, and while I can take him as a fill in artist, I’m not crazy about the possibility of him being one of the regular contributors. It was a shame Ryan Sook couldn’t finish the recent Atom/Hawkman BN issue. Pasarin had to take over about midway. It looked okay, but you can really see the difference.

  19. Ricardo says on :

    Esteban Marotto, Craig Hamilton and Brad Vaccata had better Aquaman… Finch is good, but he is no Aparo, Ramona or those two I mention. Does it mean everybody’s ressurected? What’s the catch? Hummm…

  22. thecoyotegospel says on :

    I will start on a positive note: I love Aquaman. I am glad to see that the most vocal outcry from DC fans is being answered in some manner.

    Now, my other reaction: I have never liked David Finch’s gritty and over-rendered art and I don’t care for it now. I think he was an odd and impulsive choice to capitalize on his switch to DC.

    I have also professed that I’m not a fan of spoilers on The Source and the solicitation craze, but I know I willingly subject myself to it. It’s too bad we couldn’t add some mystery to the proceedings, but hopefully it isn’t a cut and dry resurrection story.

    HOLY COW, well, Finch just won me over, not to say I didn’t like Finch but coyotegospel said, he’s a bit to gritty for me, but for Brightest Day it works, He just proved to me he can be shiny (lack of words, long day lol) and still be a little dark due to the blackest night aqua. So yeah, I’m pleased, Welcome to DC Finchy!

  25. jorel1983 says on :

    @thecoyotegospel umm how is this a spoiler? all we see is Arthur we don’t see what he’s doing if he is alive and if is how he came back. Solicitations are needed to generate buzz for the books, I think that the older comics generation ahs forgotten what its like to have to be drawn from the outside to the comics world.

    Now about this cover LOVE IT love the whole layout and how finch has Aquaman drawn and looking at his reflection I just want to see Issue 1 or is that teaser image the cover of issue 1?

    johns is really starting to disappoint me. green lantern has been a soley focused on emphasizing hal as the only important green lantern. for christ’s sake its all been get hal this get hal that! and now with this cover of his newest project all my fears have been confirmed, 26 issues of character spotlights just to bring them back from the dead. that is what this cover says to me. and if ive learned anything from johns with gl rebirth and flash rebirth is that all the characters who replaced these returnees will be put on the bench, John stewert has shown up once that i can recall in the GL ongoing series excluding the blackest night junk and sinestro war, wally has been pulled out of all the titles he starred in to “learn from barry” even though wally OVERCAME the speed force. he controls it better than barry EVER could, what is there to learn? how to run a hair faster?! Im off brightest day from this point on. its been disappointment after disappointment lately with dc and i really hope they tone down all this retarded s***

  37. jsamou says on :

    That cover makes me pretty doggone happy. I was hoping Aquaman would be returning post-Blackest Night, and, lo, and behold, there he is.

    That said, as the uncle of a special needs child, I would hope we could find a better word than “retarded” to describe something we don’t like. Sighhhhhh…

  38. thecoyotegospel says on :

    Jorel1983 — Uhm, I’m 20. I’m not sure why you automatically assume that anyone with a dissenting opinion must be an older generation. I also assure you that soliciations do NOTHING to bring in non-comic readers. If you’re not a comic reader, you’re not going to be following comic blogs or checking Diamond pages. You’re going to be drawn in by advertising (different), movies, television, toys, and word of mouth.

    What I am lamenting is that many soliciations give away large story reveals to the point that we know nothing truly important will happen unless we hear about it for months in advance. Take the recent Guardians of the Galaxy issues for example. When half of the team was killed,I didn’t buy it for a second because the deaths weren’t advertised.

    The kind of hype that I enjoy is the kind being used for Marvel’s Secret Avengers. We know the creative team and we’re being teased with silhouttes. I can speculate and be interested, but story beats aren’t spoiled. I’m not saying Marvel is perfect — several of their other announcements are spoiling Siege plot points. This image, and the accompanying text, strongly suggest that Arthur will be back, even if he isn’t back to stay. As some have noted, he has a slightly tweaked belt buckle even, seemingly indicating that this image isn’t an image of an older Arthur.

    Why not black some of this out, or obscure the image? Countdown may have been less than average, but the marketing campaign contained intriguing hints without spoiling anything outright. I would love to be proved wrong, but previous Source posts have shown a willingness to spoil events, a la the JLA preview that gave away large parts of the CfJ conclusion.

    I have no perfect answers because there are no perfect answers. I just wish that soliciations could find a better line between building hype for comics and givign away plot details before an issue is in the hands of a reader. When I’m not surprised by a sinlge thing in the comic, I am going to be more critical of the comic itself, which might just lead me to stop purchasing it.

    Of course, it seems to be working for DC, so why stop? If the worst case scenario is a few fans dropping books and many more purchasing them, the company wins. I want nothing but for the companies to do well enough to put out the best quality books possible. I wish that I had a job and an educational path that allowed me to avoid solicits, but I don’t. These are just my views, but I would caution again not to assume someone’s age, or, truly, anything about someone, based on an internet comment.

  48. blackwolf9 says on :

    @thecoyotegospel actually, I only started reading comics again a year ago after not having looked at any since I was a kid, and the reason I did was because of covers like this one. However, I do agree that often times not just spoilers, but issues being printed seemingly out of order messes with stories too much. The best example of this is when Marvel put out THE LIST issues back in September when the Avengers issue should have just come out a month ago, and it doesn’t even fit well into the plot flow of the regular series. Sadly, moments like that one seem to have plauged Marvel recently, and I think it’s because they’re trying to outdo Blackest Night by rushing out Seige. They are however two very different stories, content wise and dynamically.
    Anyway, Personally, I don’t feel that this spoiler is too big because while it does say that Aquaman (and probably many more Black Lanterns) will more than likely return; it doesn’t say HOW it will all happen. When it comes to comics, the ride is always more fun than the destination. I read amazing stories like Batman R.I.P. and Identiy Crisis knowing about the endings in advance (because I read them in trade form after they came out, not because I’m a precog or something), and I still enjoyed them to the fullest. Even looking at Season of Mists from The Sandman series, there was really only one way to end that story right, but Neil Gaiman still wrote it marvelously. And as I’m sure Gaiman has said “there are no beginings or endings. We arrive after the curtain has been drawn, and will leave before it falls” (or something like that). Because if you look at the big picture, when it comes to any and every story in comics the ending is predictable because the heroes win in the end (at least for monthly series. This fact is debateable for something like Watchmen). Sure, sometimes it might take awhile to scrap a victory out of the jaws of defeat, but it will always happen. Aquaman couldn’t stay dead forever, and neither will Martian Manhunter, or anyone that fans and writers/artists love.

  49. blackwolf9 says on :

    Oh, and legionoflinks, stop trolling and suck it up. If you don’t like Blackest Night, then don’t read comics, cus BN #6 won my best issue of 2009 award, and the whole series has been beyond phenomenal. Unless you can write better than Geoff Johns (aka, you’re Alan Moore in disguise) then don’t criticize one of the best writers in modern comics, and just read what you like.

  50. rolando says on :

    So… the Black Lanterns become White Lanterns? Presumably his black lantern ring is on the hand we can’t see in the”bad” reflection, so I’m wondering what may be on the hand in the “good” reflection.

    I’ve been among the many (or maybe not so many) Aquaman fans that have been begging for the king’s return… All I can say, is that if Johns is handling the storytelling, then Arthur will finally get some (much deserved) respect for once!!!

    Peter David was great in Aquaman, but I know that what Johns does with him will have no equal!!! YAY AQUAMAN!!!

  67. legionoflinks says on :

    @blackwolf9
    ive thouroughly been enjoying blackest night, honest but its just gotten to a point where i want a break from all the crazy stories. i dont want boring or dull but toned down, a easier paced book. comics dont have to be dark and gloomy through and through to be good and im just sick of it all i.e. BLACKEST NIGHT, DARK REIGN, ULTIMATUM. i can understand companies having there dark titles, i do enjoy death and gore alot (haunt ive found very entertaining) but to pull it over like these were is just aggrivating. i can understand why they are doing it… SALES. all im asking for is half a year or even just a couple months of happier stories, however gay it may sound. Blackest Night #6 not quite my numero uno pick of the year but definately top 3. as far as being Alan Moore that would be F****** AWESOME.

  68. blackwolf9 says on :

    @legionoflinks
    After thinking about it, I can understand wanting less dark and gritty stories from comics. as I said, I’ve only been keeping up with comics for a year now, so I haven’t really gotten the overuse of “moral ambiguity” and overdramaticly dark stories that people who have been reading for longer have (I mean, Marvel’s basically been a series of crotch kicks for the heroes over the past 7 years, and they’re proud of it, or so it seems). and I can appreciate happier stories to; I just think that if a writer isn’t careful, then “happy” can quickly turn to “silly”. Take Amazing Spider-Man for example. Spidey has been my favorite character since I started watching Saturday morning cartoons, so I still read ASM, but lately in attempts to “lighten up” Spidey stories (after One More Day) they’ve tumbled down the slippery slope to sillyville. I’m not saying you have to torture a character like Peter Parker for him to be compelling, I’d just rather a comic tries to do something with its stories other than “look who spider-man gets to fight this week/month!!!” which is what the series has become in its attempt to lighten the mood. but overall, I’m looking forward to Brightest Day, partly because I’m an optimist, and also because I trust in the writers to keep us wanting more. And personally, I’d rather be Neil Gaiman (just a preferance)

  69. DaVeO says on :

    Need upbeat stories by DC?

    Batgirl, Power Girl, Booster Gold, upcoming Birds of Prey, upcoming LOSH (I gather will be positive), The Brave and the Bold, The Red Circle comics. They are out there, just have to look for them.

  70. legionoflinks says on :

    @blackwolf9
    brighter stories can turn silly with the wrong writer yes, but you said it yourself Johns is one of the best out there and so is tomasi, they could do it easily.

    @kennypick and kozmik
    there have been 9 issues of john stewart in the main green lantern story excluding sinestro corps war, 16 incuding it. 16 out of 51 doesnt add up to “co-protaganist” but more of guest star.

    @DaVeO
    batgirl is good but i havent been able to jump aboard either power girl, booster or the red circle comics (although they look like an interesting read) and i am looking forward to birds but green lantern isnt all dark and gloomy like it has been. obviously it has the potential (OBVIOUSLY) but it can also be a bit less dark and still be good. red robin is a nice example of what i would like to see done with gl. dark and gloomy on crack for 8 straight issues and then a quick break from it all to have a moment of respite (issue #9). it makes for a greater tension when a new “night” arrives just as the day seems to break.

    @kennypick
    by the way covers talk to me all the time “buy me” “read me” but when i talk back is when i start to worry
