New ACTION art team in June: Woods on interiors, Finch on covers

I’m not much of a mind reader, but I’m pretty sure some of you were wondering this while reading the first issue of LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON: What is Pete Woods doing next?

Well, he’s doing two more issues of LAST STAND, that’s a given. And those’ll be a treat, brought to you by the writing team of Sterling Gates and James Robinson, and a perfect lead-in to the “100-Minute War” that’s kicking off in WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.

And, starting in June, Mr. Woods will be joining new writer Marc Guggenheim as the regular artist on ACTION COMICS. Pete’s done a spectacular job chronicling Kal-El’s adventures on New Krypton, so it was a no-brainer to have him swing on over to one of the ongoing titles. But what does he have to say about it all? Take it away, Pete:

“I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Marc on Action Comics. I also feel incredibly blessed to have David Finch doing covers- I have
been a fan for years. Marc and I have some fun plans for this book and intend for it to live up to it’s name!”

Oh, and we have some art to show, of course. Here are a few pages from the next issue of LAST STAND.

And if you’re going to be in the Seattle area this weekend, make sure to say hello to Pete, who’ll be at the Emerald City show as well.

But that’s not all we have to talk about here. In addition to Woods coming on board as the regular artist, ACTION COMICS will also be sporting a new cover artist in superstar David Finch, who kicks off his run with this menacing look at Lex Luthor.

I’m happy with this news. Always like Pete Woods and I’m glad he’s sticking around. That Finch cover is very nice, too. It looks like he’s refined his style a bit and I think it looks great.

Now, who’s drawing Superman with JMS? Tell us. Tell us NOW!

[...] As posted at DC Nation I’m taking over monthly art duties on Action Comics in June.I am very excited to be on the book that started it all! I am also thrilled to be working with the wonderful Marc Guggenheim! As icing on the cake we get covers done by the inimitable David Finch! [...]

Lex? in suit? Does that mean he’s back to with Lexcorp? YES! I hope so. “Businessman” Lex is much more awesome than “Mad Scientist” Lex.

This is great news. Good writer, Good artist…what more could you want?
Only question I have is: what’s gonna happen to Nightwing and Flamebird? For some reason I’ve grown fond of both and I’d love to see them in Action Comics indefinitely, or as a second feature at least!

    Awesome art, can’t stop looking!

Woods has done some damn fine work on Superman lately, but I can’t say I’m thrilled that Guggenheim is writing.

@albatross: What now? That post makes no sense whatsover

  10. kennypick says on :

IMHO… Marc Guggenheim’s Flash run was absolutely abysmal. I hope he’s got the goods to tackle Superman this time around.

  11. meisterlegion says on :

WOW! Love me some Finchy art! :D
(…even if Lex does look a little Charles Xavier’ish)

I’m really on the fence with Pete Wood’s art. It was okay for the special, but the way he draws Superman/Commander El
    - it doesn’t jump off the page for me. Actually, he draws people a lot older looking than I think they should be. I realize this is his interpretation, but look at Conner above - well, and the rest of the Legion for that matter as an example - mid to late 30’s all of them.

  12. heffison says on :

Conner looks strangely old, but at least he’s there. Supergirl looks great, and I like how she’s often drawn to acually resemble her mother.

I’m taking the lack of information on Flamebird and New Nightwing to be a hopeful sign that Dick Grayson will soon be able to reclaim his superhero name.

  13. meisterlegion says on :

Okay - 1 more example. Look at ADVENTURE COMICS this month: Starman/boy - he’s sparkling more than unicorn jumping over a rainbow…and I know we have two different artist styles.

But, can you barely even see Starman/boy in Wood’s cover above?

I think what it is: Manapul tends to draw people younger than they are and Wood’s tends to draw older than what they are. So that’s why I’m on the fence. And you KNOW who will win here… ;-)

  14. emisla says on :

Why does DC believe that having a good cover artist is enough? Guggenheim does not seem like the best writing choice, especially compared to JMS. Please have Finch draw both covers and interior pages! Comic books have become expensive enough.

  16. Gorbunov says on :

Ain’t big fan of Woods’ art. Flatness, problems with anatomy, endless unnecesary two-page spread layouts, unability to draw elegant arch-lines… and that weird angular thing he draws on every fraggin nose …those just annoy **** out of me. He has potential but until he’ll be paired with good inker he won’t reach great highs. Pay Nowlan everything he wants and he turn Woods into modern classic.

  17. badsoul says on :

the cover is amazing! i like the thin and slimy lex.

wonder when he will be drawing interiors.

  18. meisterlegion says on :

…remember John Byrne’s version: fat, bald Lex? I like this one much better, he’s actually kinda cool looking.

  19. jhonsun says on :

Pete Woods’ art is awful. I can’t stand look at his stiff, awkwardly foreshortened characters with constipated faces. His art made me drop WONK (not that Robinson’s writing was helping matters any). Looks like I won’t be picking up Action Comics either.

  20. albatross says on :

@wildclaw… Dude, I must have been on HYPER-PILLS or something.
I was chiming in on the “Hey, Sensor-Girl is meant to be androgynous, why did you put a whole for her chest in the costume?” Also, I was praising the artistic abilities of Finch and Woods, noting that the books look to be heading in a great artistic direction…
…Yeah, on second look, that post MADE NO SENSE. Above is the “not insane” edit.
