Not a lot I need to add here, beyond — wow.

We talked to the man responsible for this great piece of Bat-art. Take it away, David:

“Batman is such an iconic character and I’ve been a huge fan for so long that it was a surreal and amazing experience to draw him officially for the first time. I really have to thank Mike Marts for letting me be a part of such an important mile stone in the history of this book.”

Thanks, David! And because it’s Friday — here are the pencils to that jaw-dropping cover.

A series doesn’t get to #700 every day, so this is a moment to be celebrate — and watched. BATMAN #700 hits in June, the same month as SUPERMAN #700 and WONDER WOMAN #600.

great cover guys. i really like how the batsignal is slightly obscured by the buildings in the backdrop. such detail makes comics enjoyable

  2. meisterlegion says on :

    :!: :!: :!: Geek-gasm! :!: :!: :!:
Finch…AWWWWwwwwwwesome! - what an honor too, to do the #700!

I was hoping for Bruce out of the costume. But, this is just too good. Should be released as a poster. I know it’s my new iPhone background!

  3. Ricardo says on :

So he is becoming the new penciller… That’s almost a bet…

  4. Websnap says on :

    @Ricardo

No, I heard he’ll be doing cover for a while… Action comics and I think Wonder Woman too..

  5. meisterlegion says on :

I hope this issue is released in the high-gloss cover format that BRAVE AND THE BOLD and a lot of the event books are released in - because it’s special!

  6. majesticfool says on :

WOW! i mean…WOW! I want this as a poster NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But it’s Dick right? (not really sure when Return of Bruce Wayne comes out).

See, this is something that confuses me. You’d think that DC would want to make a distinction between Dick Grayson/Batman and Bruce Wayne/Batman, no? That they’d even want them both drawn differently, right? Otherwise why “kill” Bruce? What was the point? You look at this cover and you go: “that’s Batman”- period. Who cares who’s under the cowl?

When Bruce seemingly died in Final Crisis I actually thought that his absense would matter, that Gotham would turn into a living hell that Dick wouldn’t be able to handle. Instead Dick just totally gave up on Bruce, put on the cape and cowl, and apparently can do as great a job as Bruce, and even look as awesome (as we see in this cover).

Even Hush is out there posing as BW, so who needs Bruce? why’s he even coming back if it doesn’t even feel like THE BATMAN is gone?

I want Bruce back, but making Dick look as awesome as Batman’s always been, makes you wonder what the point of Bruce’s disappearance really was (other than to boost sales).

  7. albatross says on :

majesticfool- I get lots of what you’re saying, but have a few things to add. As for why they don’t look different, well, they’re SUPPOSED to. Morrisson and Quitely’s Dick-Batman has a super-neat “Bat” belt buckle and (in my opinion) way cooler gauntlets/gloves. These differences were (for some odd editorial reason) not effectively broadcast across the whole DCU (or even the whole Bat-family) and it kinda got ignored :(

…I can’t believe I said all of that, I just came here to say GWWWWOOOOOOAAAAAHHHHHH AWWWWWESOMEE!!!! to Mr. Finch’s PHENOMENAL cover!! I read New Avengers when he was on it, and it was one of my few Marvel books… can’t wait to see him make his mark here!

  8. dusk83 says on :

I just jizz in my pants! lol!

  9. wildclaw says on :

@dusk83…um that was strange….and moving on. Its nothing special and they should have used alex ross

  10. Ricardo says on :

Kudos should be given to colorist here… Any idea who was it?

  11. batmanners says on :

@wildclaw Alex Ross has done tons of Batman covers recently, so I don’t see why he should be the go-to guy for a “good cover” when there are tons of artists capable.

  12. danielk says on :

    it’s amazing!!!!!!!!!!! (and it’s dick glove….)

  13. bebe says on :

    the colors make the diference.

  14. meisterlegion says on :

@Ricardo - Scott Williams did color I hear. He’s good at doing color for Jim Lee and David Finch both it appears.

…also, I really think that if this is Dick Grayson - that it is comeuppance to grace the cover of issue #700. He deserves it and has been Batman for all these months. And, if it is Dick in the suit, then maybe we will have two Batmen - I’m fine with that. Those are his gauntlet gloves, not Bruce’s - unless Bruce came back and decided to borrow Dick’s.

  15. Theozilla says on :

Nice, very menacing, and what a detailed background! Just awesome…

  16. aaronturon says on :

@meisterlegion - Dude, Scott Williams is an inker. He inked this piece. And he did an awesome job on this one. Btw, he also inks for Jim Lee and his colorist is Alex Sinclair. This piece, however has a different colorist, I can’t seem to identify his signature, I think he’s anew guy.

  17. aaronturon says on :

And okay, according to the gloves he’s wearing, THAT is Dick Grayson. Cool over concept and layout though! Was just hoping that it’d be Bruce Wayne under the cowl.

  18. sheldongoh says on :

@aaronturon - judging by the signature, it was colored by Peter Steigerwald. He’s not new. He used to be colorist of choice for the late, great Mike Turner.

  19. badsoul says on :

Oh my god!!! Please can we have this in a wallpaper format!!
this is just beautiful to look at. really iconic!
I want to see mr. finch do the interiors

  20. parallax says on :

Dang..Peter Steigerwald’s colors are so great I swear I can Hear Batman’s cape!

  21. nw316 says on :

The last year has been the best over-all year for Batman in decades, and although I’m missing Bruce and want him back it’s still a shame the run is coming to an end and things are returning to the same-old, same-old. I just hope they do it right, bring Bruce back in a huge way AND launch a new Nightwing title with top of the line artist and writer for both, not A-listers for Bruce and second stringers on Nightwing. Dick has earned a major push when he goes it alone again.

  22. aaronturon says on :

@sheldongoh - Thanks for the correction man. No wonder the signature has an Aspen logo in it.

  23. Will44 says on :

That’s a great looking cover. I can’t wait for this issue and I hope its a got great stories about both Bruce and Dick. It appears to be Dick Grayson on the cover, looking at the glove.

Dick Grayson definitely deserves a huge push and his own ongoing again after his stint as Batman is over.

  24. meisterlegion says on :

Sorry about getting the inker & colorist mixed up guys - and thanks for the correction. It was really hard to make out the names under Finch (which his is obvious to read)

  25. stoshgriffin says on :

yeah we all want bruce back eventually, but do we want him back as the capped crusader? Dick has done a great job as the dark knight detective. How about we get Bruce back in more of a supervisiory role. You know more of the grizzled old war vet type. He and Alfred could do the behind the scenes legwork. Bruce could be kind of like his counter part from the batman beyond universe.

  26. robcol says on :

nice picture, the only thing I would say is that I had to ook at it twice before I notice that this was dick’s costume.

  27. depri says on :

I think finch is really right where he needs to be at. Covers for all of DCs biggest books are now done by him and MAN do they look amazing. I would rather him do 4 covers a month then do interiors because each time i see one of these covers it really amazes me to no end.

  28. polly_says says on :

    @wildclaw….NO MORE ALEX ROSS COVERS!!!!

Alex Ross is way over used, over played, stale and not what the big comic needs. If you were to say someone like Andy Kubert instead of Finch I could see why based on his “return…” covers but since he’s got that nailed and Finch was able to draw the he!! outta that awful white batman over at the house on construed ideas…give him a shot and look what he did? If that’s NOT the Batman then what is?
Also – To all the Dick and Bruce look the same under the cowl people – Frank Quitely’s ideas were used for those issues and its sad the design wasn’t truly followed as an example but there is the argument – who is the real Batman –is Bruce (obviously more so than Dick) what embodies the Bat or is the Bat the true hero? I am trying to not quote Katy Holmes from “Begins” or “Dark Knight” for that matter but it’s true. I always loved the history channel show they did on Bats and the psychology of him.
Anyways – Finch fits the cover. One day possibly the interiors, but let him get to know this universe before he jumps right in. I’m going to say Daniel will do the art in some capacity.

  29. epedreros says on :

That right arm looks odd… where does it come from?
    why does it have velcro?

  30. Theozilla says on :

That is not velcro on the arm, it is the two-bladed gauntlets that Dick uses!

  31. seansd says on :

Loving that DC is getting a top notch artist!

  32. latinbatman says on :

LOVE this image! I didn’t like dick as batman until i saw this cover. THAT is what Batman should look like, watching over his city, surrounded by buildings looking all gothic and scary! I’m getting #700 for the cover alone. I agree with everyone else that this should be made into a poster. Can’t wait for Bruce to return.

  33. latinbatman says on :

@ Wildclaw BYE BYE ALEX ROSS!

I think Alex Ross doesn’t capture the strength of these characters. He makes them look like men in tights. Now i know some people will say “uhmm…that’s what they are.” But he makes them look too real. And when they’re too real looking they almost look ridiculous. Batman shouldn’t just look scary, he should BE scary. And that’s what Finch has brought across with this piece of art.

  34. wildclaw says on :

@latinbatman and batmanners: I respectfully disagree. I believe Alex Ross is the best. And you seriously say that after Kingdom Come? Batman is drawn like one serious badass in that. Remember Kingdom come is a whole book of Alex Ross covers! That takes some work

  35. willovesrorschach says on :

WOW! Love this image! Has to be the best Batman cover in years perfect for 700! Love the fact that the costume looks black instead of blue, and the face in shadow with the white eyes, so looking forward to getting my hands on this and for Bruce to return (sorry but he is THE only Batman). David Finch would be perfect for Batman interiors, please DC make him the new regular artist, for at least a full year. And YES make that cover a poster and desktop wallpaper!!

  36. jorel1983 says on :

@Wildclaw i agree with everyone else Alex Ross is good but getting tired of his hyper real covers all his guys look like normal people in tights these characters are not normal the are Super and and mr ross does a good job on posters but not on bad ass covers

  37. wildclaw says on :

Of course I’ll get this issue. I LOVE BATMAN! I just think the cover could have a better impact. Its not iconic like Ross’ R.I.P. covers. But thats just me. I respect everyone elses opinion

  38. albatross says on :

Aww man. I’ve seen enough Ross Batman covers to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool! This, however, is Finch! Prettttty neat to see him take a stab at an epic Bat-cover! I don’t dislike Ross, but to say “whatever, just give us an alex ross cover”… i feel like different (a dude who’s never done a batman cover but he’s greatness) makes a big impact! :)

  39. superman says on :

Does anybody know if this will tie in with superman 700 and wonder woman 600?
it’s going to be a massive month for DC
