You heard us mention a while back that Paul Levitz would be writing a Batman Beyond-centric SUPERMAN/BATMAN annual in June — but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future who is guided by an elderly Bruce Wayne in his efforts to protect Neo Gotham.
Starting in June, BATMAN BEYOND — a six-issue mini-series from writer Adam Beechen (who’s no stranger to animated characters, having worked on The Batman series a few years back) and artist Ryan Benjamin — will pit the future Dark Knight against his own past, as a dangerous force has begun to target Bruce Wayne’s old foes. Can Wayne’s past put Terry’s future in danger?
Not sure, gang. Let’s check in with Adam Beechen himself. Take it away, Adam:
“The dark future of the legendary animated series comes to the DCU in a six-issue miniseries, as Terry McGinniss, Bruce Wayne’s young successor as Batman, faces his deadliest foe yet — a mystery murderer from the Dark Knight’s past! Old faces return, new allies and enemies step into the light, and the partnership between Terry and Bruce — not to mention Terry and Bruce themselves — might not survive!”
Thanks, Adam! And for good measure, we’ve got the cover to the first issue, from superstar artist Dustin Nguyen above.

Oy vey.
Throw in Zeta and you got a deal.
coooool! realy looking forward to this. Although I would have perfered an ongoing!
This is in continuity!!??? Or another universe??
Who Cares!!!!
“from writer Adam Beechen and artist Ryan Benjam”
JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS IN, YOU PUSH ME BACK OUT!
But seriously after great news about JMS on Sup and Wondy, it was inevitable that you guys will put the epic turd soon. You did it, now return to good news and good creative teams, please.
@Godi:
I care. If this is New Earth, it means that Tim, Dick and Damian definitely (a) were killed; (b) are no longer part of Bruce’s life (because they set off to somewhere else, or had a quarrel with him); or at least (c) simply won’t be the heirs of the cowl and are still hanging around as Nightwing, Red Robin and Robin.
And any of the above would suck.
So I do believe this is another of the 52 universes.
I was just “ok” with the TV series - definitely the weakest of the 1992-2001 DC animated shows, but still watchable - but this sounds like an interesting concept, and Batman Beyond will probably work better in comics form where we don’t have to hear techno music over the whole thing.
I REALLY LIKE BATMAN BEYOND.
HOWEVER, This “creative” team shows such a tone-deafness it once again begs the question whether the people in charge know what the hell they’re doing.
Any writer associated with the absolutely terrible “The Batman” series should be persona non grata.
Secondly, a totally average artist like Ryan Benjamin is yet another miss.
Couldn’t Grant Morrison have incorporated a Batman Beyond miniseries into his Batman-line plans? That would have been a much cooler choice. And certainly DC could have found a suitably TALENTED Artist: Chris Sprouse, Andy Clarke, John Cassaday, Rafael Albuquerque, Ivan Reis, Doug Mahnke, Dustin Nguyen etc.
Batman Beyond is too good an IP to do in just a half-assed manner.
Come on DC, get your act together!
@ solaristyrant - really? REALLY?!? Do you really think that DC is going to put a top-tier creative team on a book based on an animated series that hasn’t aired in 8 years? C’mon man…let’s just be thankful they’re putting a book out AT ALL.
@ Godi - I am assuming that the irony of your post is lost on you, considering that in the Batman Beyond continuity that’s EXACTLY what happened - Bruce & Dick had a falling out and Tim died.
And to those people who don’t like Batman Beyond. Get your heads out of your collective asses.
Technology in the real world is moving at a break-neck pace. EVENTUALLY, the current Batman is going to have to be updated accordingly. Batman, with the delightful exception of Grant Morrison’s Batman, already feels dated and sort of an anachronism. Batman Beyond is an EXCELLENT CONCEPT and should already be brought into the Batman mythos proper - at least the look and the technologies of Batman Beyond should begin to enter the storylines.
Batman, conceptually, is competing with Iron Man. You have to update Batman in such a way that it remains appealing to the comics reading audience. Batman as Batman Beyond brilliantly maintains the Science Fiction feel of the Batman mythos for the Future.
[...] mentioned at the Emerald City Comicon this weekend, DC is bringing Batman Beyond back to comics. Today on the Source, DC released a few more details and the cover to the first issue. The six-issue miniseries will be [...]
@Solaristyrant - NO. NO NO NO. Batman is NOT competing with Iron Man, unless it’s at the box office. That’s a terrible analogy.
Methinks someone needs to switch to decaf. “Get your heads out of your collective asses?” ‘Cause someone doesn’t like a character? Uhm….ok….
Batman Beyond was a great show, and a logical addition to continuity. Aquaman and Terry McGinnes featured back to back (with another family favorite Starfire in between) makes for a fun time to introduce my kids to comic book characters in print instead of Saturday morning cartoons! Great news!
I’m not saying to turn Batman into Iron Man. Iron Man’s technologies ARE PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE. Batman Beyond doesn’t try to be Iron Man. Batman Beyond introduces technologies that are more interesting AND more plausible than Iron Man could ever be. Batman HAS TO BE UPDATED with futuristic Plausible technologies - the Batman Beyond animated series did that beautifully.
Also, the futuristic Gotham city is vastly cooler than anything in the Iron Man stories.
Batman Beyond returns. MEGA PLUS!
Adam Beechen & Ryan Benjamin haven’t wowed me… yet. I’m looking forward to this book though.
@ DC: Let me know when Bruce Wayne aka Batman returns to his war on crime. (Morrison’s Return of Bruce Wayne is inspired by Shirley MacLaine’s Out on a Limb, isn’t it?) Grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin has big names attached and has disappointed me. Pyg and Flamingo can go to DC’s limbo. Morrison’s Jason Todd was moronic. “Batman made me dye my hair!” Really? I’d like to think JT was being manipulated with that Red Hood behind the scenes. However, I just know better, it’s just awful writing. Dick Grayson used a Lazarus Pit twice! I strongly disagree that he would set out to do this or let Damian become Robin after killing the Spook. I actually like Damian though, so that’s something. The flying Batmobile doesn’t belong in modern times. Get to street level. Thanks for listening!
P.S. Best of luck to Beechen & Benjamin! They aren’t big names but if this book works out, they’ll at least be fan favorites!
Batman Beyond was an excellent show. Definitely among my all time favorite cartoon shows with maybe only Batman TAS and JL/JLU beating it but not by much.
Looking forward to this comic.
I still remember how Beechen practically destroyed Cass’s character.
There is some research going on concerning superconducting Resonant Microwave Cavities. One researcher has made a finding that because of relativistic effects such a cavity would function as a impulse drive. Meaning: the resonant microwave cavity can be made to literally fly in a specific direction because the microwaves’ photons’ momentum is delivered to only one side of the device. Chinese Universities are already investigating this phenomena as well.
So, I wouldn’t speak too soon about the flying cars from Batman Beyond being “impossible”.
Nice! Definitely picking it up even though I’m weary about Ryan Benjamin on art. I enjoyed his Image work, specifically Phanton Guard, but thought his more recent issues in the Bat Titles were a little too loose.
People complaining about Adam Beechen need to watch Brave and the Bold. He is fully capable of awesome story telling.
Of course, if you have watched B&B and hate … well then I guess the only thing to say is you have bad taste. :p
BATMAN BEYOND! Awesome News!
And, for everyone asking - @Godi & @Praetor, these stories, at least the cartoon, is said to have taken place on Earth-12: Link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DC_Multiverse_worlds
Wow!!! Some strong opinions here. More of ‘em against this than anything else. Personally, I WANT to be excited about this, I really liked the animated back in the day, but for some reason it just doesn’t get me going.
I’d be cool with it if they’d manage to include Terry into continuity (as in a future with everyone else in Batman’s life) But an “elseworlds” Batman Beyond? I dunno.
And that cover art is HORRIBLE!!! Terry is slim and young. He looks like he’s in his mid-40s in this. Is it Bruce?
Oh, well, I’ll check the annual. If it sucks, count me out on this.
“as a dangerous force has begun to target Bruce Wayne’s old foes”
Looks like we finally see what happens to the old rogues gallery! I was hoping for something like that, because we only knew what happend to Joker, Ra’s, Talia, Mr Freeze and Bane from the series…

I think the cover looks great. I’m very excited about this and cannot wait to check this series out. Hopefully it’ll lead into an ongoing.
Agreed about the inappropriate cover art. Terry was slimmed down in comparison to Bruce’s design and I always thought that was a smart decision… don’t beef him up like TAS Batman.
YESS its Terry McGinnis, Awesome News! Cant wait to pick this up! Thanks DC!
Don’t care about the haters – love this!!!
Can’t wait. I’ll leave the negativity till AFTER I’ve read it… if justified.
@ praetor – What if they were killed? It happens… and really would explain why bruce closed shop. Let’s figure out the context. In The return of the joker BB Animated Movie, Tim was alive. and Dick was referenced.
Why do people always feel the need to demand stories they are comfortable with? Art, just like life, isn’t always wrapped up in a pretty bow and of all the heroes in the DCU Batman usually is the darkest and drenched in loss. Is it really difficult to wrap your head around a “less than perfect” future for the Bat-Fam?
Personally, I’m more concerned if they have a good story in this. It’s different that what is going on in the bat-titles right now so i’m optimistic.
Question will the story takes place after the events of Justice League Unlimited episode: “Epilogue” ??
Can’t wait and frack everyone who doesn’t get it. Watched the show very recently and it is fantastic. Its still Schway!! And so what if everyone is dead. Its the future. If Barbara Gordon can walk then its an alternate universe
@Wbsnap:
I’m only saying that Tim, Dick and Damian are good characters that I, as a writer, would dismiss so easily from Batman’s future. I’d like to have them around, whether as heroes, villians, cripples, retired-heroes-that-now-live-a-normal-life-with-their-families, or anything. If they are dead, or simply not around, I’d like to read a story where they explain that.
Now, I agree with you in that drastic twists can be good in comics (e.g. there doesn’t have to be always a Robin), but if Batman Beyond is New Earth (aparently it’s not), I wouldn’t like it.
I agree with many people above with the fact that Batman’s costume should be constantly upgraded. Even though it already has incorporated many cool stuff, the fact that (without the cape) it still looks like regular spandex may start look unappealing for today’s high-tech generation.
@ SPOODLES
I thought that opening music was awesome, and I don’t even like techno.
As for the continunity cops out there, loosen up, if it’s a good story it shouldn’t have such an impact on your judgement.
Ahhhhhhh, I love Batman Beyond, very excited for this!
@markajcook it’s good to see I’m not the only one who is not enjoying Morrison’s run. Dick grayson is not the world’s greatest detective. At least Edwards Enigma kicks ass now.
And to the people that think that the bat-suit needs to be update for modern readers, I’m gonna have to disagree. Its never been about the suit with Batman (except for the fear it inspires), its been about his abilities and his mind, the suit is just a compliment. If he starts relying on an upgraded suit, it would feel Iron Manish, which is not who this character is.
Stupid predictive typing on my phone changed Nigma to Enigma, making me look like a noob. My Droid is out to get me.
praetor - Whether this is toted as being New Earth or one of the 52 others, it amounts to the same thing: Batman Beyond is really a potential future, not an absolute.
And besides, Tim, Dick and Damian are all variations on Robin. Addressing their various histories and eras doesn’t serve a story about Batman Beyond.
Unless it fits into the story they want to tell, leave it a mystery. That’s a better method, as it leaves it up to our imagination.
Oh and I really hope Max is in this because she was my favourite character besides Terry of course in this. If she were to become Flamebird in this book or Oracle II that would be fab. I always felt they missed the boat with not giving Max a hero id
I’m just happy to see that they are doing something with Batman Beyond. It’s going to be good to see Terry again.
I guess we know Cassandra Cain will be the villain.
This plus Return of Bruce Wayne equal a good summer this year.
AWESOME!!!! Keepin’ my fingers crossed 4 blight, inque and spellbinder(in that order)(maybe even shriek)
