Unveiling the new POWER GIRL creative team

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

By Alex Segura

The question’s obvious: Who’s taking over the creative reins on POWER GIRL?

Well, let’s read the tea leaves a bit, shall we? As some of you recall, Power Girl was once a member of Justice League Europe. It seems like a lot of the characters that were under the umbrella of Justice League International are reforming in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST. JL: GENERATION LOST is written by Judd Winick. Well, so’s POWER GIRL, starting with June’s issue #13.

Teaming with new artist Sami Basri, who contributed some fantastic covers to recent issues of THE SHIELD and is also handling interiors on POWER GIRL, the latest chapter in Power Girl’s life finds her inching closer to her former JLI teammates — but why? It’s too early to say, gang, but Judd’s got a few teases to keep us on our toes. Right, Judd?

“It is with GREAT fear and excitement that Sami and I leap into this gig. Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and Amanda Conner have bought an amazing, fresh, and inventive rebirth to this character. Our greatest challenge will be to remain faithful to what they’ve created and also take Power Girl to a new place. As far as the course that the story will take, I’ll be uncharacteristically forthcoming : The story is tied to JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST. Not CHAINED to it, but tied. Power Girl has a history with the JLI that will be explored. A lot.”

Want more? Well, here’s Basri’s first cover on the series. Nice, huh?

After the Fall, GREEN ARROW rises again

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

By Alex Segura

gav2_cv1

As THE RISE AND FALL continues to rage, we’re getting a glimpse of how things will shake down amidst the rubble and tragedy surrounding Star City.

Oliver Queen has been branded a murderer by his friends. Roy Harper is facing a shattered and twisted reflection of his past life. The Brightest Day looms — but what does it mean?

Some of those questions will be answered in the coming months, and a few more will be answered in June, with the debut of a new, ongoing series: GREEN ARROW.

From writer J.T. Krul and artist Diogenes Neves, the team that brought you the turning point GREEN ARROW #30, comes a tale of redemption and rebirth — but for whom? After “The Fall of Green Arrow” how can Ollie Queen effectively carry the heavy bow of the Emerald Archer? And what mysteries await in the shadows of what’s left of Star City?

We got on the line with writer J.T. Krul for some hints, but there wasn’t a lot to say, which just made us all the more curious. Take it away, J.T.:

“This is it!  We’ve been saying for awhile now that 2010 was going to be big for Green Arrow, and you can’t get much bigger than this.  As we put together the story for the Fall of Green Arrow and developed where he was going to end up and what Ollie’s life was going to be like, we knew it was truly a new beginning.  A BRIGHTEST DAY beginning at that!

In the wake of the turmoil in Star City, the people need someone in their corner more now than ever.  Most of those in power, be it business or government, are looking for ways to exploit the situation to their advantage. The city is rife with crime and corruption of epic proportions and it’s only getting worse.  But all is not lost.  Oliver Queen’s got his quiver. Now, it’s time for Green Arrow to move into the role he was always meant to be – outlaw for the people.

For this relaunch, Eddie and Adam and the guys at DC have put together the best team possible to make Ollie shine like never before. Diogenes Neves and Vicente Cifuentes killed on the Black Lantern Green Arrow special and we knew they were the guys to relaunch the Emerald Archer.  And don’t even get me started on the cover work by Mauro Casciolli.  I’m so happy to finally share it with the rest of the world – because it’s been my screen saver ever since I saw it.  Now THAT’S Green Arrow!!!”

And we probably won’t get much more info than that, but until then, we’ve got a lovely piece of Mauro Cascioli cover art to keep us on our toes right above this text.

Who’s drawing BATMAN AND ROBIN next? Plus some BRUCE WAYNE news…

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

By Alex Segura

brcov013new

Speculation’s been bouncing around for a while now as to who’s going to take over the artistic reins after artist Andy Clarke’s stint on the series comes to an end, and we’re happy to confirm that the next artist is none other than Frazer Irving, who’s no stranger to collaborating with BATMAN AND ROBIN writer Grant Morrison, having teamed for the KLARION THE WITCH BOY mini-series during the SEVEN SOLDIERS event.

But what hasn’t been talked about much is just how integral Irving’s upcoming arc is to Grant’s other Bat-series. Namely, BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. In fact, Irving will be pulling a bit of double-duty, as he’ll be handling art on the second issue of the six-issue mini-series. We checked in with Bat-editor Mike Marts to give us the lowdown on Irving’s artwork:

“Frazer’s a unique comics creator in that he handles all aspects of the art chores—pencilling, inking and colors—which gives him the best creative control an artist could ask for. And with fantastic results! Readers will drool when they see Frazer’s amazing pages to both BATMAN projects he’s working on.”

Thanks, Mike. And because we’re in a generous mood, we managed to put together a list of the artists contributing to each issue of RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. So, here goes:

#1: Chris Sprouse
#2: Frazer Irving
#3: Yanick Paquette
#4: Cameron Stewart
#5: Ryan Sook
#6: Lee Garbett

Pretty impressive lineup, no? We’ll have art to show from each issue as we get closer, but in the meantime, enjoy Frazer’s variant to BATMAN AND ROBIN #13 above and the variant to BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #2 right here:

Discover RED HOOD: THE LOST DAYS

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

By Alex Segura

rhood_cv1_r1

The Red Hood’s very presence haunts the Dark Knight’s every waking hour.

But how did the Red Hood come to be? What trials did he go through before donning the gleaming red helmet, during those formative years before he crossed paths with Batman?

Writer Judd Winick and artist Pablo Raimondi hope to answer that question in June, with the debut of RED HOOD: THE LOST DAYS, a six-issue mini-series revealing the untold story of the man behind the Red Hood. It’s the tale of an angry young man’s transformation into a deadly villain.

What else is there to say? We went straight to, well, the source on this one – writer Judd Winick. Take it away, Judd:

“I’m thrilled to return to this character, and it’s both a joy and challenge to tackle this new story. LOST DAYS tracks the time from the Red Hood’s rebirth to his return to Gotham. In it, we get to understand this anti-hero in a new way. I think it explains both how he’s sympathetic, and an unrepentant monster. He’s a wonderfully complex character, and I hope this adds some even greater depth to his mythology.”

The series will ship its first two issues in anticipation of the arrival of BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD DVD arriving in stores. The DVD, the next entry in the popular ongoing series of DC UNIVERSE Animated Original PG-13 Movies, hits this summer from Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation and showcases Batman confronting new enemies, old foes and painful memories as a powerful vigilante with a penchant for violence comes to Gotham to stake his claim on the city.

And hey, Judd’s got a few things to say about the DVD, too:

“I can barely describe the fun and terror that went into adapting two years worth of story into one film, but the results will be something that will knock everyone on their cans. I couldn’t be prouder, and I’m itching for everyone to get a look.”

BATMAN BEYOND returns in June

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

By Alex Segura

bmbv2_cv1

You heard us mention a while back that Paul Levitz would be writing a Batman Beyond-centric SUPERMAN/BATMAN annual in June — but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Terry McGinnis, the Batman of the future who is guided by an elderly Bruce Wayne in his efforts to protect Neo Gotham.

Starting in June, BATMAN BEYOND — a six-issue mini-series from writer Adam Beechen (who’s no stranger to animated characters, having worked on The Batman series a few years back) and artist Ryan Benjamin — will pit the future Dark Knight against his own past, as a dangerous force has begun to target Bruce Wayne’s old foes. Can Wayne’s past put Terry’s future in danger?

Not sure, gang. Let’s check in with Adam Beechen himself. Take it away, Adam:

“The dark future of the legendary animated series comes to the DCU in a six-issue miniseries, as Terry McGinniss, Bruce Wayne’s young successor as Batman, faces his deadliest foe yet — a mystery murderer from the Dark Knight’s past! Old faces return, new allies and enemies step into the light, and the partnership between Terry and Bruce — not to mention Terry and Bruce themselves — might not survive!”

Thanks, Adam! And for good measure, we’ve got the cover to the first issue, from superstar artist Dustin Nguyen above.

Editor Brian Cunningham on Starfire joining R.E.B.E.L.S.

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

By Alex Segura

That Kalman Andrasofszky over is pretty telling, huh? Straight out of TITANS, Starfire joins forces with the merry band of R.E.B.E.L.S. this April, just in time for super-genius Vril Dox to pick up the pieces from the last issue’s battle with Starro. And what’s L.E.G.I.O.N. got to do with it? We checked in with R.E.B.E.L.S. editor Brian Cunningham for some info. Take it away, Brian:

“After her friends in the Titans sort of drifted apart on her again, Starfire returns home to the Vega System where her homeworld of Tamaran used to be before it was destroyed by the Psions. And what she ultimately finds there will make her VERY unhappy with Vril Dox. Frankly, I’m not sure how Dox’s silver tongue will get him outta this one…”
