By Alex Segura
Starting today, Wonder Woman will appear like you’ve never seen her before.
As you may have seen in THE NEW YORK TIMES, bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee has redesigned her costume for the modern era, just in time for BABYLON 5 creator and critically acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski and artists Don Kramer and Michael Babinski to launch the Amazon Princess into an exciting and epic new era of adventure.
Starting with their story in WONDER WOMAN #600, which is in comic shops today, JMS and Kramer will begin a run that is both forward-looking and true to the legendary character, planting her firmly in the modern era. But enough about what I have to say. Mr. Straczynski took some time out of his schedule to lay out some of his plans for WONDER WOMAN right here on The Source. So, without further adieu, take it away, Joe:
Suppose you woke up one morning, or turned a corner, and suddenly the life you had been leading up to that moment…was not the life you were leading.
Suppose someone went back in time and changed one thing, and it changed your life to the point that you had little or no memory of what life had been like before the change happened. What would you do to get it back? Should you get it back? Who did it? And maybe more important…why did they do it?
That is the question faced by Diana starting in issue 600.
The Gods, for reasons of their own but which may have something to with their survival and perhaps the survival of Earth itself, have changed the timeline. In the new timeline, years ago the Gods removed their protection from Paradise Island, and left it vulnerable to attack. And attacked it was. Led by a dark figure, a veritable army descended upon the Island, equipped with weapons that could kill even the Amazons. Outgunned, doomed, Hippolyta gave over her three-year-old daughter to a handful of guardians who spirited her away as Hippolyta led one last desperate battle against the forces that had come to destroy all she had created. In that final battle, she and most of the Amazons were killed, though some managed to escape.
It’s now nearly twenty years later. Diana has been raised in an urban setting, but with a foot in both worlds. She has little or no memory of the other timeline. She knows only what she’s been told by those who raised her On the run, hunted, she must try to survive, help the other refugee Amazons escape the army that is still after them, discover who destroyed Paradise Island and why…and if the timeline can be corrected or not. She also does not yet have access to her full powers, but will be gaining them as she goes. Along the way, she will face a range of enemies — human and otherwise — who we have not seen before.
What we also haven’t seen before is her new look, the first significant change in her appearance since the character debuted in 1941 (not counting the mod look used briefly in the sixties, about which the less said the better). It reflects her origins in both the outside world and the world of Amazons: tough, elegant…a street-fighter’s look which also incorporates elements of her classic design. It reflects the two sides warring for ultimate victory, and underscores the path she must take.
It’s a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior, in partial answer to the many female fans over the years who’ve asked, “how does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out?”) She can close it up to pass unnoticed…open it for the freedom to fight…lose the jacket or keep it on…it has pockets (the other fan question, “where does she carry anything in that outfit?”, it can be accessorized…it’s a Wonder Woman look designed for the 21st century. The bracelets are still there, but made more colorful, tied on the inside and over the hand, with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark. This is a Wonder Woman who signs her work…letting her enemies know that she’s getting closer.
This is Wonder Woman reborn, literally and metaphorically: fast, elegant, tough, smart…the savior of her people, their guardian and protector…avenging the fall of Paradise Island, searching to discover why Paradise Island was abandoned by the gods. In the end, what she discovers will change her life and the world forever…and she will come face to face with a decision that will mean life or death for the entire human race.

I sure hope you’re joking.
I hope you’re joking too. The leather jacket look was bad in the 90s, when it was in style. No need to revisit it now.
So do I. That costume is uuuuuuuuuuugly.
THIS…is going to be epic.
Not the story, the reaction from the fans.
I require popcorn, forthwith.
THIS was the best Jim Lee could come up with??? Maybe he’s too busy running things to put forth serious effort into her new look. My day just got a bit worse.
DO OVER!
One More Diana?
Looks like she’s just changed for happy hour after work. In 1996.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Wow.. This is just awful.. Bring back the old costume that has been with the character for over 60 years.
Was this supposed to be posted today or tomorrow? I don’t recall anything about this in the NYT.
More auto-blog problems?
What is going on at DC these days? So far not impressed with their 75th anniversary.
Let’s see, what iconic chracter have they not screwed this year? Jeez…
OMG - just horrible. Why is she wearing Superboy’s tacky 90’s costume?
I hate it.
she didn’t need to be redesigned for the modern era.
Wonder Woman is a global icon. you can’t change her look anymore than you can change Batman’s or Superman’s.
i don’t know who that’s supposed to be in that costume, but it sure isn’t Wonder Woman.
For her new costume, she shows less skin than her original *no offense*
Okay, here goes…
I like it. I had been intending to drop WW after 600, but this has changed my mind. And this is coming from someone who is unfamiliar with JMS’ work and was underwhelmed by his contribution to Superman 700. I could never be mistaken for a die hard Wondy fan, but I’m looking forward to this.
Weird…. one thing is that this is the second time Diana’s had a costume with a jacket. She had one and very short hair in her outfit she wore when Artemis replaced her as WW.
It could be a very good story. Its going to be weird to see this as a Wonder Woman story though, at least as she’s been portrayed the last 20 something years. I will admit to being curious about it though, which is a good thing I guess.
I really hope that this is a short lived costume change. This did not work back in the 90’s. Why change? Classic character with a classic costume. I guess they did not learn from the Batman and Superman costume changes.
This has to be a joke. I am literally sick to my stomach right now. This is a joke. You CANNOT destroy my reason for loving comics and superheroes like this. Not even for a single issue. Please stop this NOW!
So is she being ret-conned out of DC history? Or does everyone else in DC-land remember everything we’ve read in previous years? What does this do to Donna Troy, and the current Wonder Girl?
I’m going to try and remain open-minded. I like re plot….somewhat, sounds like a lot of adventure. On a scale of 1 to 10 I have to give it a 5. The outfit is dated: stockings, mini-jacket, and choker do look very 90’s; not quite 21st century fashion. But, I’m sure Jim Lee isn’t looking at Cosmo or Vouge. Neither do I for the record but I am somewhat fashion savy. At least the tiara, bracelet, and magic lasso were kept. To me, this sounds more like “the challenge of Diana”, much like what Zues did with Hercules…with each challenge she gets a little more power back, but at the same time is loosing her memory of the old life. I don’t know, it’s a little bit of a shock for me. It’s a huge change.
This had BETTER freakin’ end with Steve Trevor stepping out of the shower and it’s all a dream.
I was willing to lay the One More Day Spider-Man fiasco on Marvel, but now this?
No. I’m sorry, JMS, I love you for B5, but this is … this is horrific and wrong.
No.
Bad.
Done.
Make no mistake, I like Wonder Woman’s traditional outfit the best…. Never-the-less, Jim Lee did a great job on this one. I’m really looking forward to Mr. Straczynski’s stories as well.
Thanks, DC, and the whole creative crew.
I actually just threw up…how dare you do this. THIS IS DISGRACEFUL. I hope you lose the rights to WW. I am now done collecting comics. GOOD JOB!
“It’s a look designed to be taken seriously as a warrior,”
Hahahahaha! Seriously? You really think this makes her look serious as a warrior? She looks like a biker, sure, but that’s not the kind of warrior Diana is!
“…in partial answer to the many female fans over the years who’ve asked, “how does she fight in that thing without all her parts falling out?”)”
I like that you tried to go here, but this was definitely not the right direction to achieve it.
You guys need to stop letting Jim Lee redesign costumes. He’s already ruined Huntress’, what were you thinking letting him loose on Wonder Woman? Drew Johnson’s design achieved both of these points while still respecting her iconic look, but you wouldn’t let that one keep, why something as ridiculous as this?
Wow.
So - um… Max Lord didn’t get his neck snapped, and so now controls Superman? Or is this just a way to get rid of Amazons Attack?
Since presumeably Wonder Woman isn’t part of the Trinity anymore, I guess (since she has never been fully powered) - was she ever a member of the Justice league?
So - which of the villians Wonder Woman defeated in the ‘real’ timeline now rules the Earth in the new DC Universe?
Yay, let’s celebrate knee-jerk, over-judgmental, arrogant, trolly comicbook fans!
Whoo! Let’s shun people for trying something different and just do the same thing all the time!
Whoo! Let’s call it “crap” and “disgraceful” without actually reading the story!
Whoo! Let’s act like this is the permanent future of the character and not actually read the description, which talks about her getting her powers and her people back!
I’m glad some of you are threatening to never buy comics or Wonder Woman again. That means I can enjoy this without hearing whining, despite the fact that the comic HASN’T EVEN COME OUT YET!
I say again, “Whoo!”
I just showed my parents her new costume. I wish I would have taken a picture. LOL!
I’m afraid the costume is going to be the perverbial ‘lead balloon’. The story/plot sounds updated and new, but everyone I’ve talked to since the news dropped, hasn’t been positive. OMG! My parents faces hahaha
Do I understand it right???
Every other Amazon has been murdered?????????
WHY DO COMICS HATE WOMEN!!!???????
I keep telling myself “this is one of those ‘Azrael’ things where they’re going to present us with something insane to make us appreciate the real thing when it comes back.”
But I think, they wouldn’t try that TWICE, would they? I mean, fool me once…
90’s nonsense. Jimenez’ last pinup SHAMES Jim Lee here.
I sure hope this is just for the limited reboot or I’m out.
Well, it’s not a permanent change. Remember: the timelines was changed, her memory erased and she’s been depowered. For a reason. she slowly gains back her power and memory while searching for the culprit and trying to fix time at which point she’ll be back in her her star spangled bikini. It’s what Walt Simonson did as well when he cut her hair and made her forget.
EPIC FAIL. 60’s Mod Diana all over again.
I loved Gail’s tenure, and I had been so looking forward to #600 and beyond.
DC learns nothing.
Now we have to wait the–what? Months? Years? Decades?–until this trainwreck is undone. As it surely will be, just like Azrael Batman and Electric Superman.
God, I am depressed.
What is JMS doing to DC comics?
First the ridiculous “you’ll believe a man can walk” storyline for Superman that should have been dismissed in a single issue (rather than wasting a whole year - during which no doubt sales will plummet!) and now this!
Wonder Woman doesn’t need a makeover. Please correct these errors of judgment as soon as possible or that’s TWO beloved titles I’ll be dropping!
I was going to go all ape-$#!7 over this until I read Straczynski’s “synopsis” of his upcoming arc.
This is nothing unlike The Death Of Superman or Knight Fall, or World of New Krypton or Batman RIP.
Wonder Woman’s sales have been dropping faster than a teen girl’s panties in a Jonas Brothers concert. This WILL last for ONLY ONE YEAR, and then good old-fashioned Wonder Woman will be back in all her glory and DC making a big deal out of it.
I Kinda like the Black Canary look. I’m tired of her “Great Hera” personality. It’s time for her to kick some butt! I will check this out. Nice Move DC… people are going to freak!
@ stupyjohn…Stupy sounds about right.
…Well, first impressions being what they are…
I’m not impressed. At all.
If this were say, Wonder Woman Earth One? I’d be cautiously optimistic, but having this be in the DCU proper (if it’s not oh well, I’m operating on the information given to me right now) it just leads to far too many questions, many of them being “what the hell?”
The outfit hardly looks modern, it looks like the outfit she wore in the early 90’s except with long pants in place of biker shorts. It also hardly looks DC, it looks it belongs in a Wildstorm or Top Cow book. Feels incredibly out of place.
And the story…it just dosen’t work in a shared universe like this. As eric174 and riversidedave mentioned, changing Wonder Woman’s timeline has a direct effect on several key characters and events in the DCU.
I can only imagine this will last a year and then the status quo will return for the most part, with maybe a few smaller changes remaining. And the explination for WW being different or not being in other books at all will be explained away as “The Gods made it happen that way.”
I’ll read it tomorrow (called my comic shop to make sure it wasn’t actually out today as the blog entry states) but my first impression is that I don’t care for this at all.
Is Booster Gold going to guest star and correct the timeline or does he only do that in his own book?
I don’t mind the updated look.. I’ll miss the swimsuit but it was time to be updated.. It’s not going to stop women from dressing like that at conventions and that’s all we really care about.
I do agree this will cause major confusion regarding the JLA and Donna Troy again… Maybe they should have killed Donna Troy in Cry For Justice or Blackest Night to save us from this confusion again..
They did this before 25 years ago at the end of Crisis of Infinite Earths..
I have great respect for Jim Lee’s work, and I agree that it’s time for an update of WW’s outfit, but this is just wrong. It’s too young-looking for Diana. Hand it down to Donna and think again!
I like it for the most part. Maybe strike the jacket and lighten up the pants and I think it would look better.
are her pants her ****ing boots? WHY IS JIM LEE STILL THERE?!
I’m sick of Wonder Woman’s history being screwed with. She was created and written as an amazon from Paradise Island. PERIOD. The rest of her history should remain as it was. Moulton Marsten and HIS vision have been kicked in the b^&%% enough over the years.
The new costume sucks too btw…
As a fan,(since 1975) EXPERT and CONSUMER of ALL THINGS Wonder Woman, I will NOT purchase a single item with this ‘bastardized’ version from Jim Lee.
I like this costume, but that does not mean I do not like the old one. I like them equally. I think the likely end result will be the timeline being corrected, because this changes the continuity for Wonder Woman and her supporting cast and the DCU more drastically than OMD diud for Spider-Man and the Marvel Universe. So the question remains if (in all likelyhood) the timeline is reset, will she keep this costume for the future? (which I would be fine with) I think this storyline looks really interesting and I will be definately buying it (and I have not bought Wonder Woman issues before), and the people who do not like the change, should still not judge the quality of the story since it not even out yet.
On a side note, in the unlikely event that this new timeline is not changed, DC should publish an issue that dedicated to describing the new status quo coninuity of Wonder Woman and her supporting cast (like the Wonder Girls) and the rest of the DCU. Anyway, this unlikely outcome would not necessarly even be a bad thing. Look at the current state of Spider-Man right now, except for the people who are still complaining about OMD/BND, the quality of the Spider-Man books are excellent and some argue have never been better.
In short, calm down people.
Sweet redesign bro! Is it 1993 again? Where can I get my hologram gate fold poly-bagged variant with collectors trading card?
I wasn’t really going to buy this issue 601 but after seeing all the people it made angry I definitely will.
I support this message.
Wonder Woman and Spiderman ARE 2 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ISSUES not to mention published by COMPETING PUBLISHERS…
Don’t tell me calm down. Ill rant when and where I ****ing feel like it.
Honestly, the costume design doesn’t bother me as much as completely destroying WW’s origins.
Sending away a powerful baby because the race’s homeworld was being destroyed? Hmm… sound familiar anyone?
JMS is so obsessed about Superman that he made a female clone. Good job JMS. Is her arch-nemesis going to be named Lexi Lother?
I’m not sold on the costume or the idea that the origin of Wonder Woman in this new timeline is extremely similar to the origin of Superman.
Still I will not judge til I’ve read a few issues, that is only fair, and lord knows it could be just what Wonder Woman needed.
People People People - let’s not turn this into a “WONDER WHO?” celebration….it’s still our favorite Diana. So she was given a 90’s outfit…maybe Conner/Superboy will be getting his 90’s leather biker jacket too! (here’s hoping)!
We have to remember, it’s JMS…!!!
I’ve loved his B&B stuff. I will not give up on him, and I won’t give up on Diana.
Bit, I do feel a costume redesign contest should be given to the fans.
Boy that’s a tragically ugly costume. Jee Lee and I are the same age, but this design makes me think he may have hurt his career as folks will think his design sensibility is “too old”. In my ideal world, DC would pull this issue, put Simone back on the book with Scott and stopped hitting the plot reset and plot repeat buttons so damn often.
I guess the memo to Jim Lee was:
“Woman can no longer show he skin. Cover her up. It isn’t right (nor politically correct) for a feminist icon in the 21st-century to be wearing a short, 1-piece bathing suits with boots and a tiara. In other words, the dominatrix look has got to go.”
WW is supposed to be the ultimate male fantasy. Now she looks more like Elana Kagan. I give this new look one year (two tops!).
Ha, yes rollerblades is what’s missing and…oh yeah, creativity and respect to her history.
They give Wonder Woman modest, more practical clothes and the fans FREAK.
Gold. Pure gold. I love it.
I think I might just check out the Wonder Woman book for the first time now just for kicks.
A few things…
Although this story will last a year, I think it takes place between the pages of the regular DCU. It’s all about Wonder Woman and her journey. Donna and Cassie will still be in the DCU as if everything is okay. When Wonder Woman’s journey ends, she’ll pop back into the DCU and everything will go back to normal.
As for the costume - I honestly thought it was an update of the ’90s costume. I don’t expect the new suit to last past this storyline. Really, this is like a Wonder Woman from a different timeline (or Earth if that’s not too confusing.)
NO! NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!
I want to cry - make it stop please I’ll do anything. I’m so angry I can’t believe this! The costume is fine. What the Dodson’s did with it is beautiful. This is awful! Oh my God make it stop. Wonder Woman brought me to comic books. They can’t do this to my favourite Super heroine!
I’m just going to pour a double vodka and go to bed and check into Arkham in the morning. This is the worst thing I have ever seen!
There are too my words I have to describe this abomination of an outfit…Mr Blackwell would NOT approve. Someone’s already said it, but it bares repeating…It didn’t look good in the 90’s and it hasn’t gotten any better. I think I hate this more than her black “Just Diana” outfit. It has little to no ties to her origins and the synopsis of the storyline has me even more skeptical than when I first heard that Paradise Island was going to be destroyed — been there a few too many times in recent history. I’ll get the first few issues, but I’m sad to say that this doesn’t look good.
Oh and where the F**k is Gloria Steinham! Didn’t she get her out of the white jumpsuit and back into the classic look! She’s a warrior and I want to cry for Gail Simone now! I really do! I loved her run! I’m so angry!
No surprise. This is the same company that jacked up THE SHIELD, THE WEB and THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS and approved a Superman movie script with a subplot of the Man of Steel knocking up Lois Lane! ‘Nuff said.
dear jim lee.
you should hang out with your also hack buddy rob liefeld. i dont care if i spelled his name right or wrong. he’s a hack. like you. you should see about making another horrible comic company, but staying there this time. i would like you better for it.
love adam
ps. do you think if i drew batman a few times, i could get your job? i can draw batman.
ps. jim lee, you still suck.
Well looks like Donna Troy is a Titan of Myth again! Sorry I am multi posting but am angry and extreme shock. Anyone who knows me on here knows how much Diana is my absolute favourite and should know my living room wall is plastered with Wonderwoman action figures, I drink from a Wonder Woman coffee mug. I have a Wonder Woman glass, two keyrings (next to my vintage Alf keyring) and a huge poster of her and everything I can get my hands on thats hers!
that new costume SUCKS. now she looks like a biker not a superheroine. the star spangled panties always seemed out of place since she’s not american but an amazon so I guess that was a good change. I just think she should look more like a WARRIOR. if you want my opinion they shouldn’t add clothes, they should sudtract clothes . then again i’m just a 25 year old fan boy.
You do all realize this isn’t a permanent change? It’s a one-off story that didn’t, isn’t, and won’t happen in the real DCU continuity. Just like with Batman #700 and Superman #700, neither of which is necessarily in continuity either. This is basically like an Elseworld’s story: what if Wonder Woman’s history was different? How would she be a different person? How would the world be different? So seriously, get over it. It’s for one issue.
And for the record, I don’t think it looks all that bad. Certainly not bad enough to whine about how I “practically threw up” or “cried” or whatever. Sheesh, people, grow up a little. It looks a whole lot more warrior-like than the metal bathing suit–not to say it looks all that warrior-like, but her real costume certainly doesn’t look much like a warrior either. At least in this one, someone could actually, you know, fight. Which is kind of important for a superhero.
It actually sorta reminds me of Black Canary, with the jacket.
…I think it’s a good…start? The outfit itself is mostly okay, and I like the redesigned bracers, but the weird footstraps and the jacket don’t work quite as well. The legs themselves…they need something there to break up all that black.
Overall, though, it’s sure as hell more interesting than Superman imitating Forrest Gump.
I think everyone is missing one important fact in all this uproar. The one silver lining in these troubled times.
That silver lining? Chris Jericho has a gameshow on ABC called “Downfall”. Why be upset over costume changes when you can watch things fall 100 stories when questions aren’t answered fast enough? Plus, it’s hosted by modern day human marvel Chris Jericho-the man who Batman was based off of.
So let’s all thank Chris Jericho for being so awesome we can forget about….whatever it was people were talking about here. New shoes or something? I kinda zoned out after the 3rd complaint post.
I am VERY excited for this.
I know that as a longtime Wonder Woman loyalist, I’m required to not like any significant change that occurs within the title. LOL! But this is exciting for a number of reasons.
1. Principally, and despite what JMS might say, this Wonder Woman is NOT for Wonder Woman’s core audience. There is absolutely no loyalty to me as a longtime WW reader. As a result, there’s a level of danger that intrigues me.
2. There is a tremendous amount of drama in these changes. JMS essentially found a sensible way to make Wonder Woman less like Mary Poppins and more like Wolverine. Technically, that pisses me off, but I bet it’s going to make Wonder Woman an incredibly popular character with the people who wouldn’t normally give her the time of day. And I’m all for WW’s popularity.
3. The new costume is plain, unimaginative, and functional, and it doesn’t distinguish Wonder Woman from the plethora of other heroes out there–just what non-WW fans (and some WW ones) have been asking for. May it bring WW all the publicity and attention she deserves.
4. In the end, I know all of this is to make Wonder Woman more appealing as a Hollywood property. And if these changes are wrong, the character will resist and revert to type. I hope for well-written, well-drawn, thrilling stories about a hopeful character with a strong moral center. I want to worry about her and care what happens to her. And reading JMS interview, I’m worried about her–but in a good way, if that’s possible.
I was really going to trade wait this but man this is the most excited I’ve ever been for a wonder woman arc. I’ve been trade waiting Gail Simone’s run and all of the current volume, I even didn’t hate Amazon’s Attack, but this is really exciting. One day I’ll be ready for more bodacious warrior wonder woman but right now I want something different. I mean how pissed was everyone when Bruce Wayne was “killed” by Darksied? No body wanted him to be replaced with dick but this last year has been some of the best Batman stories ever. (Batman and Robin in particular).
Hell maybe if everyone complains enough we’ll get a Wonder Woman confidential series with out of continuity classic stories, (hopefully with the same quality as the analogous Batman series.)
Why must everyone fear new things.
This is so great. The past week and a half of skull crushing boredom is completely forgiven. This makes up for all of it.
And for the record, I will buy eight copies of every one issue themanwoaname does not buy.
I love you JMS. God bless you, you crazy diamond.
This. Is. Awful.
This is fantastic news! I wasn’t sure of how I’ll go with JMS’s run, but now I’ll be in it for the long haul. Wonder Woman has needed a costume update for so long, and this is really cool. The story premise is very interesting as well. More power to DC!
I’m sure someone put a lot of effort into this, but it just shows me how out of touch DC is right now. They have no clue when to get out of their own way.
Very interesting. I like the artwork in the sample panels. As much as DC will try to market this as the new status quo, the look will only last for JMS’s run. So don’t worry purists, we’ll be back to classic Wonder Woman soon enough.
Just like Riley proclaimed after seeing the severed head of Bushido Brown being separated from his body:
AWW S#!T.
Aesthetic-wise, it’s alright, to a point. But story-wise, it’s just like the consensus said, this is no different from the One More Day fiasco that plagued Spider-Man. For the first female super-heroine, she deserves better than that.
when I came here there were 24 comments or so. Now? 60!!! And they say DC can’t shake things up!
The more people hate on this, the more I want to get into this new WW!!!
Ok its 3.07am in Ireland now and this is keeping me awake (yes I’m sad but there are millions of women and some men [like me] out there in the world who worship this woman for the icon she has become because of the star spangled panties). Try telling them that the outfit can be changed! I know how all the Superman fans felt now! I do! I really do. I’m sorry I didn’t see what you meant with the New Krypton thing. but I was so busy enjoying Mon-El that I forgot how cool the Superman stories were. I’m sorry. I was an ass about that. Now I’m tired. I must make some warm milk in my Wonder Woman mug and sleep!
@majesticfool: really? You do like stirring!
@cdemnik, how is you being out 20 bucks bad for me? hell buy 25 copies. its still your dime and you havent proven a single point. congrats to you for being dumb.
OH and finally did they have to kill Hippolyta again? Jesus leave the woman move to New York and marry Ted Grant already!
@anniemoose no no this is her new outfit for a minimum of a year. this is gonna be in WW 600 and 601 till JMS’ arc finishes up. I was totally looking forward to WW 600 and beyond now seems like 601 or 602 might be the last I get of WW till the new year. Man after Bat week with Grant being back on the title and saying oh ya here is wat happened between RIP and Final Crisis I was like awesome need that so we know what happened. The JMS was like Superman is gonna walk across the midwest and northwest and call it america i was like umm could work. But this? no this doesn’t get a pass sorry this is just horrible.
jumping the shark after what, 70 years? i think that might just be the worst and most ridiculously unnecessary costume change in comic book history, made all the worse by the ICONIC status of the character. she needs a costume change and a reinvention like batman needs to start wearing a trenchcoat or goggles.
it’s actually insulting to pretty much everyone who’s invested time in the character over the last x-number of decades. and i really, really wish it were some kind of april 1st joke rather than yet another horrendous, ill advised decision by DC, following on from the events in bird of prey #2 and the killing of ryan choi.
if it’s not broken, as they say. . .
i predict sales dropping drastically. . .
. . . . . seriously, DC, this IS an insult to your readers.
@memorandum: you’re right you know!
Considering no one was buying the book to begin with I really don’t foresee a sales drop at all. In fact I think this will be the most interesting and attention-getting thing that Wonder Woman has done… well, ever.
I know I’ll already be getting eight copies.
@cdemink: good for you honey…good for you!
Whats on her feet?
So if these comments are any indication (Which we all know they’re not, but its fun to pretend, no?) all of the sales on Wonder Woman will be coming from people with no interest in the character but enjoy spiting angry fanboys and fangirls.
Sales are sales, right?
You know, I have to ask; if there are really millions who worship the character so much that a costume change - that gives her pants, no less - for a little while in the comics is that big a deal, then why does she sell so poorly ninety percent of the time, especially lately?
“One More Day fiasco that plagued Spider-Man.”
More like liberated it; One More Day was garbage, but the results after it are hard to argue with unless you’re a die-hard Spider-marriage advocate.
best thing they’ve done in a while was kill off ryan choi. he sucked.
–THIS…is going to be epic.
Not the story, the reaction from the fans.
I require popcorn, forthwith.–
Heh, Vinnie called it. In late, but the show is still going and seems to be fun.
@dl316bh: yes! I can line up a hundred of my gal pals who’ll vouch for this. Let smear lipgloss on the statue of liberty and put her out hustling on the streets and see how much people like it!
Ok I am one who has been buy WW faithfully since they relaunched her after infinte crisis and now i am gonan take a year off JMS is really dissapointing me first with superman now this wow
THIS JUST IN:
•Power Girl getting a breast reduction
•Zatanna casting a spell to turn herself into a man
•Birds of Prey gals shaving their heads bald - to be more aero-dynamic
…PS an invisible plane just landed in my front yard!!!
@wildclaw: Alright then. I’ll take your word for it. There just seems to be a hell of a disconnect here to me. No disrespect meant.
I’m not sure about your hustling comment though; she hardly looks trashy in this, just like the jacket makes it look like she’s dressing a bit too far under her age.
DC, you get me for one story arc. I get tweaking and modernizing costumes, it’s been done before to Supes and Bats, but this? This is a drastic overhaul and slap in the face to the true fans. Fix it, or for the first time in 20 years, you can make mine Marvel.
@meisterlegion: funny! thanx for the comic relief.Actually Ed Benes drew Powergirl quite normally endowed when she appeared in JLA. yes that bun must be a curse for Oracle. (KInda like captain Janeways) and I always had my suspicions about Zee. The hooker boots were the first sign!
This is awesome. I’ve been enjoying Wonder Woman since the relaunch and this is going to take it up a notch. Her former costume is classic but a little embarrassing. I like her new tough girl look. Way to go DC! I am just getting more hooked on your books.
To be honest, I see nothing wrong with the redesign. Over the years, Batman’s costume has been tweaking in subtle ways to reflect realism. Look at “The Dark Knight” if you need proof. Yes, the usual Wonder Woman costume is iconic. However, the fact remains that the uniform has always looked more at home on a stripper than a super-heroine. Also, Wonder Woman is supposed to be a champion of women’s rights. Can anyone really take her seriously when she is wearing that? Hundreds of writers have commented on the costume (Identity Crisis, Superman: For the Man who has Everything, etc) and its not-so-subtle preference of sexiness to functionality. I rarely purchase WW books, but now, mainly because of JMS, it will become part of my regular reading list.
Folks are complaining about the jacket, but it’s certainly better than the one she wore 15 years ago.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c149/scarecroe/WonderWoman93-09.jpg
Ha ha ha…so wait we are celebrating 600 issues of an icon by completely revamping her and turning her into Witchblade? I will always give WW comics a try but this is ridiculous.
Blah! Did I hot tub time machine back to the 90s?
I got $20 says the costume goes back to the original within 18 months.
JMS story in Superman 700 was pretty blah too. I’m going to buy the books and give ‘em a shot but they better turn into Thor quality pretty quick.
The story sounds interesting and I’ll give that a go but that character design is terrible. I don’t mind doing away with the Star Spangled Panties, but the rest is just hideous. I hope at the end of this she looks more Greek than less. She needs the armor skirt (whatever that is called).
Diana’s costume has LONG needed updating. This one isn’t bad, but ditch the jacket. (Sooooo ’90s.)Now about the storyline, um, not so sure. The Amazons had better eventually return.
people need to read this interview with JMS
http://ryanlb.com/images/dc/blogsize/huntress-jimlee.jpg
lol i posted a wrong link!!!
here is the right one
http://www.newsarama.com/comics/jms-talks-wonder-woman-100629.html
Wow. I didn’t know that April Fool’s was this early.
I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
In a story on Newsarama, it says there is a timeline change. Diana has flash memories of the old time line.
Instead of being raised on Paradise Island and being a hero who helped formed the JLA, this 18-year-old Wonder Woman is raised by guardians in New York. Sounds an awful lot like Donna Troy’s origin.
Honestly, why not just retire Diana and come up with a new Wonder Woman or just a new character in general.
I understand some of DC’s desire to strip the overtly U.S. patriotism from the character to make it more marketable worldwide. I understand the perceived and possibly necessary move to dress the character in more than just a swimsuit. I’m pretty sure the costume had a lot to do with why Warner couldn’t get a worthy actress to commit to a script.
But honestly what I fins most appealing about Wonder Woman was that even though she was raised in a Grecian culture, she recognized the nobility of the U.S.’s ideals of freedom, liberty and equality and basically decided to drape herself in the U.S. flag. I know the origin changed over the years, but that’s basically the original idea behind the character.
Some would say the American trappings to her origin ties her to a period of time long past — WWII — and, yes, certainly the character’s roots are grounded in the 1940s. But, at least to me, American ideals aren’t rooted in just one decade. American ideals come from governmental philosophy formulated more than two centuries ago, but to me, those ideals are as worthy today as they have ever been.
Now, has the U.S. always or ever totally lived up to those ideals? No, of course not. Not in 1776, 1860, 1941, 1961, 2001 or in 2010. But that does not make those ideals invalid or lame or old-fashioned or any less worthy today than when our forefathers pledged their lives, liberty and sacred honor to split from England and form our nation.
I’ve always seen characters like Superman, Wonder Woman and Captain America as icons to remind us of those ideals, to remind us that we can be better than we are and that even when we fail to live up to those ideals, that we still aspire to them. Most ideals can never be reached, but if they are forgotten, they can never even be aspired to.
To me what those characters stand for is what lifts them above or makes them culturally more significant than others.
Cutting Wonder Woman off from her origin devalues what has been and is special about the character. Instead of being the icon for all super heroines, she becomes just another character. The new origin as explained in news article sounds a lot like Donna Troy’s.
Certainly, I can understand DC’s move with the character. Don’t tie her too closely to the U.S. because it would hurt the marketability of the brand across the world. Good business move? Maybe.
Is a brand still a brand when you change what made it a brand in the first place?
Coca-Cola tried to change what made it “the real thing” back in the 1980s and the public balked.
From the way JMS explained the plot, he and/or DC editorial has built a way to backdoor out of the changes for some time in the future if they don’t prove popular.
I’m not a stickler for continuity. To me continuity should work for the characters not the opposite. I primarily want good stories.
But it seems with Wonder Woman 600, Wonder Woman won’t be Wonder Woman anymore. That change just saved me 5 bucks.
Ok, you know why suddenly putting pants on a Wonder Woman is a bad thing, in this particular instance?
Well, for one, she is iconic. That’s like drastically changing Superman’s uniform, it just doesn’t make sense. Secondly, JMS’s reasoning for changing the costume was bogus. In order to be taken “seriously as a warrior” she has to cover up, or be a little more masculine? Women have a right to be sexual. Not only was she a sexual being (duh), she was a strong and positive icon. Not only that, I doubt anyone would take ANY superhero seriously in realistic terms just by looking at them… aesthetically the idea of costumes is a little ridiculous. This only makes it worse by the fact that it is a man doing it, and yes that does make it worse.
ALso “How can she fight with a metal breastplate?” I dunno, how can any superhero do the ridiculous things they do? She’s a frackin superhero, stop asking for realism.
@Madmarva wow that is an essay and a half and I totally agree. I know around the world it is “cool” to hate on America but for an American company to lay down like this its just saying “yes we know u hate America so we are going to distance ourselves from our core values so u will buy our stuff” WW was brought to america because we stood for truth justice and equality and to totally destroy all of that means she is no longer WW.
So, here we have JMS’s new take on Wonder Woman. Not a surprise in the slightest that more than a few folks have jumped on the “Controversy” band-wagon in an attempt to either unravel this new incarnation or simply watch fans of both WW and the DCU as a whole rip each other a new one in the debate.
For the record, I will not take a shot at *anyone’s* viewpoint as I can only speak for myself. My stance on this is Positive. I have been reading WW since the late 90s, and have since been a fan of the Diana character in all her various incarnation; not because of the Costume, the Invisible Jet, or the Amazon thing, but because I liked the “Character” and what she represneted. As JMS has put it, Diana has ever been a Strong, Brilliant, Independant woman who has stood side by side with the Big Two and gone up against the best and worst villains of the DCU.
Sadly, overtime, people began to see just the Armored Bikini and *not* Diana herself. One of the biggest Arguments about this change is the Costume and how JMS/Jim Lee can not change it because “that’s” how people know Wonder Woman; but, see, that’s the point of this whole change in the first place. People see the Costume and go, “Oh, yeah, Wonder Woman,” but along the way people began to see *just* the costume, and they could care less about the Character. Sadly, Diana has been tossed back and forth between so many different kinds of authors with different takes on the Character that people just stopped trying to figure out what Diana was all about. What JMS and company are trying to do here is pull things back, set them in a context that both an old as well as newer generation will understand more while keeping enough of WW’s core concepts in place, al the while streamlining more than 20 years of retcon’d History.
Starting with #600 we get the chance to start out with Diana in a very “Day 1″ capacity; we get to “relearn” who this woman is, why she fights, and what she believes in. Along the way JMS will allow us to be reaquainted to the Mythos that was lost or reset, and bring everyone to the same point when this massive new arch comes to a close.
Now, people are going to hate this, no matter what. I wish there was something I could do about that, but there isn’t. All I can ask is that before you go Supernova with the Flamewars, give #600 a chance. Hell, give #600-605 a chance. *Really* get to see what this new Era is trying to accomplish before you burn it in effigy. You might hate the Costume, but, again, Wonder Woman is more than a Costume and I think people need to be reminded of that. Hopefully, JMS can help.
@madmarva: Yours has been the most balanced and well thought out post of the day and night. This has to be a record number of posts tho? I don’t recall Superman and Batman week getting this much attention.
I’ll be honest, I kinda like but the jacket, gaunlets and choker look dated. The story line’s no different from House of M; its a good storyline and it’s not a permenant thing. Costume’s inly gonna be around for a year! She’ll be back to the classic look soon enough
You know, removing her Amazon bracers is the most insulting thing.
Repulsive.
I’m a big fan of this change, it’s an awesome looking costume!
Now I can buy a Wonder Woman comic without feeling like a total creep!
If you guys (other commenters) really want to see women wearing little clothing, there are lots of places on the internet for that, but it’s about time that Wonder Woman gets a suitable crime-fighting outfit! There’s no way that Wonder Woman wearing a new better outfit betrays her character, if it’s Powergirl, it would kinda make sense for you guys to argue that way (since that is actually part of her character), but WW really deserves a new suit that she could realistically (well, you know, for comics) fight villains in
You know it just occurred to me. This isn’t unlike Cathy Crosby’s Wonder Woman from the 70s. No powers just a martial artist.
It needs roller blades. Especially when she goes on her quest to roller blade across the U.S. to ask everyday people why the gods have forsaken us.
@rider28031 this is dc. not marvel. dc should be above garbage like house of m and captain america reborn. but apparently, stealing rejected marvel ideas is a bad idea, stealing used ones is a fantastic one!
seriously. what the hell?
you screw up booster gold next i swear to god, i will burn down the dc offices.
This is a joke. It has to be a joke. I refuse to believe this hideous piece of 90s trash is for real.
The whole “running shorts, wig and jacket” costume was bad enough. There’s no way this is going to be a permanent switch. It’s just a shame that for whatever storyline that’s coming, we’ll have to look at it.
Maybe #600 will be my last WW issue for awhile. I dropped all the Titans books, which I never thought could happen. Why not?
Horrible!!! Completely and totally horrible!! Why would you mess with the Wonder Woman’s female greatness?! Her costume is as much a part of her as her lasso or her bracelets. DC needs to get it’s act together if they ever hope to catch Marvel in sales. It’s bone-headed decisions like this that constantly keep them in a distant seond place. I won’t be reading the book until the real WW is put back into the book!!!
Well, THIS has created a stir. Um, the story can potentially be interesting if supporting cast and history (upon which a lot of DCU history hinges) is retained. Otherwise, does someone wanna explain Donna Troy, Wonder Girl, Artemis, etc.?
Obviously, this isn’t the first ret-con ever, but for a major major character to have a MAJOR major retcon is supremely risky.
But, I guess it wins since it gets major press and buzz.
The outfit is a little underwhelming, however.
Oh yeah, and the storyline description? Not interested. At. All. At least if it sounded good, I might try to ignore the costume, but no. No.
@jonbrak1 ya i will give it 2 issues if i am not wowed i am gonna drop WW till this debacle is over. but WW 600 is gonna be awesome though
I was vaguely looking forward to JMS on both Superman and Wonder Woman but so far what I’ve seen of both has been gravely disappointing. I can’t believe DC kicked Simone of WW for this garbage. The choker alone makes me want to vomit. The storyline sounds like it belongs in an Elseworlds, not wasting a year of Wonder Woman and her fans’ time.
Well I like it and look forward to reading this run.
Why can’t anyone understand that the change in costume is only temporary.
She wears the new costume because of the new timeline. As the timeline will be corrected the old costume will be back.
Why do we have to damn everything without reading the end porduct? I say let us have a bit of faith in a writer, who has proven himself repeatedly and enjoy the ride!
sometimes bad reactions really mean a bad reaction.
there should be a focus group or something for ideas like this.
I’m in SHOCK!!!!
I don’t think DC would do anything bad to one of the most Important and Loved characters in comic books history. I will not make a judgment until I read and see the book, but I don’t think an iconic character like Wonder Woman needs a make over! More than anything her costume is classic and recognized everywhere, no need to change it unless the story really calls for it and makes sense.
I hope it’s alright but I’m a little a little torn.
badsoul, in some people’s perspectives, JMS *has* proven himself repeatedly to be inconsistent. Some of his stories are GREAT, and some frustratingly not so great. This COULD be an interesting story that puts a fresh spin on our character while hopefully not ignoring what’s come before, but it could also be a stubborn “this-is-how-I-want-to-write-the-character-and-established-traits-and-history-be-damned” spin on the character, much like I’ve felt about half of JMS’s B&B run has been.
It’s felt like he’s shoehorned characters into stories HE wanted to tell, making them act unlike they’ve even been portrayed before, just to suit the story. And, I *hope* he’s not going to do that here, but I’ll wait and see.
@themanwoaname
Jesus! I read House of M on the internet, alright? It looked interesting enough but you do have a point on the story thing, it’s been done, they could have done a little better. You didn’t have to go ape-$@*# over it! (And yes, CA: Reborn was garbage)
@basoul
Yes! Someone shared my sentiment, it could be a good story, and costume’s temporary!!
Thanks!Ya agreed on the costume! It’s only temporary!
Sorry for the typing above, computer’s nuts
I am the only one here, but I think this new costume is kinda cool!
and like ‘badsoul’ has said, its only temporary…so I am going to read Wonder Woman!
I try to look on the bright side. JMS has enough talent that he might manage to make this an entertaining train wreck. Jim Lee may have designed the costume but he will not actually draw the comics so maybe the artist can find a way to make this costume less of an eyesore. At least she finally has pants.
After 600 I plan to take the book off pull and hold status, but I will at least look at the future issues in the store to see if I want them.
The thing that bugs me the most- when this tanks, and I believe it will, DC will say that comic book readers just don’t want Wonder Woman rather than looking at the real reasons why this tanked.
I applaud DC editorial, JMS, Jim and others for striving for their goal of modernization and increased mainstream recognition by going on a new direction, fixing the costume and using the New York Times to market and attract new readers. Wonder Woman is THE preeminent superheroine but she has not received the kind of attention others like Batman and Superman has. Finding ways to remedy this is a sign of a good company who strives to better their property. Hopefully this new direction attracts more female readers and be accepted.
As a comic fan, the one thing i am cautiously concerned about is continuity. Hopefully, the changes that need to be made will not be too drastic or confusing. If this were one of those Earth One OGNs, then I am 100% all for it. In any case, all of this will surely lead to something good. Hopefully, this also includes an increased chance of a live-action adaption on the big screen.
You’re definitely not alone, greenghost.
I have a feeling that after the storyline is over, we’ll see a combination of her classic costume and this new one.
‘What we also haven’t seen before is her new look, the first significant change in her appearance since the character debuted in 1941 (not counting the mod look used briefly in the sixties, about which the less said the better)’.
Sorry JMS, but the less said about this new Jim Lee aberration the better, too.
I’ve worked in branding for many years. During the nineties there was a vogue for Matisse-style logos. Every client wanted one. I spent many hours explaining to people who should have known better that no matter what is wrong with your branding you should never ditch years of recognition simply in pursuit of a ‘fresh’ look. Brands can, and do, suffer irreparable damage with such short-termist thinking. So let’s hope that WW’s new look is just a temporary bump in the road for what has indisputably become one of the most recognisable brands on the planet.
Kinda interested in storyline (can’t be more boring than Gail’s run, anyway), but costume is… WTF Lee was thinking… he has to jump off his 90s design mindset.
I can’t see this lasting. The costume isn’t very “superhero” but it’s not “bad”. Could do with a further redesign that uses the new bracelets and keeps the trousers whilst keeping the top more like her original one. (I never got on with the starry underwear). What I fully expect to happen here is this costume to last for a few arches in a parallel timeline (or whatever) before Diana eventually saves the world and puts it back the way it was. At that point the costume and story will either revert back to what they were or at least a closer representation of them.
The newsarama article has JMS stating that he told Lee that he wanted the costume to include the spandex pants and the jacket so it’s not COMPLETELY Lee’s fault. The abomination that is Huntress’ costume is, however.
Oh, and the exact design of the gloves.
She’s looking like a motorcycle girl.
I don’t think DC is completely stupid,.. yes they are doing this to create attention towards Wonder Woman,.. and it allows for NEW stories that previously couldn’t be told, BUT, they are using it as a test, to see what happens, cause at the end,.. there will be an option to keep what works and what doesn’t. AND I agree with the poster about taking risks,.. this is a risk,.. but it won’t destroy Wonder Woman,.. they’ve tried stuff like this with Superman and Batman in the past, new costumes,.. they NEVER stay,. maybe modern variations on the iconic costume, but that’s it. In the end,. it’s all about the story… if the story is “good”… then it’s just GOOD!!! If not,. then they go back,.. ha ha…
I thought about it overnight - there is an alternate timeline story going on right now over in JUSTICE SOCIETY of AMERICA - or, just wrapping up. I don’t want to give away any SPOLERS for those who haven’t read it yet - but, basically, Superman died in that timeline and even the Green Lantern Corps perished. In the end, to prevent the timeline from happening, one of the core JSA characters sacrafices himself in the real timeline (our current DCU continuity) to prevent the alternate timeline from happening. So, in essence, it was neccessary for us to see what would happen in the alternate timeline and the nobal sacrafice to prevent it from happening. I think this is exactly where they will go with Wonder Woman - only it will take 12-issues instead of 5-issues. And, by the time that rolls around, we’ll have forgetten about the JSA storyline, so it won’t seem like we have all these timeline stories going on.
Whatever happend to telling just 1 issue stories: 1 book, 1 month, 1 story = 1 happy character.
FANS > Costume & Huge Character Changes
[...] With the launch of DC Comics Wonder Woman #600, which will be helmed by J. Michael Straczynski, DC Universe: The Source Blog reveals Wonder Woman’s new look! You can read some of the logic behind the switch over at the [...]
I predict this will last marginally longer than the Brian Bolland leather jacket and halter top look of the mid-nineties. If nothing else, it’s better than that thing.
And if we’re talking about Huntress’ costume, all I have to say is bring back the purple cowl. Cover yoursel’ up, girl.
If this many people actually read the “old” Wonder Woman, no changes would have been needed. I’m glad DC is trying something different; keeping the status quo leads to boring stories and the same old sales. They can always change WW back to exactly the way she was before if this doesn’t work out.
Oh, DC, and while you in classic-costumes-changing-mood… GET REED OF SUPERMAN PANTIES, give the man some dignity!
I would like to add for those trying to crap all over JMS for this, that Greg Rucka lobbied to have the costume changed as well during his run. Give it a chance, I bet the arc might not be that bad.
The one thing I don’t get about comic fans is the people complaining that the stories never go anywhere and always return to the status quo.
Then someone comes to change that and there is collectively a Sh#!fit (I don’t know if we can swear on these message boards). Give it a chance, I think the costume is a very welcome change, who cares if it’s 90s have you looked at Alan Scott?
i think this can be really cool if they know how to do it… Lets just hope.
oh no. no no no no no. This is the worst day of my life. You changed her costume?!? You changed her history?!? we are NOT happy. You can’t change Wonder Woman any more than you can Superman or Batman. This is a sad sad day for WW fans
Never been a huge WW fan, but this sort of makes sense. They’ve already killed (and resurrected) almost every original member of the Justice League, so they’ve got to do something else, right? Besides, redoing WW’s origin just seems to be part of the circle of life (sort of like rebooting the LoSH…it’s gonna happen eventually…and repeatedly). Actually, I love JMS’s writing, so I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I hope that the Diana’s costume design is temporary. I personally have problems with the costume’s functionality.
To DC Comics:
1) If you’re using a Wonder Woman costume redesign for a storyline, why can’t you use George Perez’s costume redesign that he wanted to use for his Wonder Woman relaunch?!?
2) If Gentleman George took a pass, then why not have another past Wonder Woman artist get a shot at it? Why did DC Comics ask Adam Hughes for Diana’s costume redesign?
3) Why not ask Lynda Carter for her thoughts on a Wonder Woman costume redesign? Since she’s worn the costume, I would think that Lynda Carter would have some great functional input to a Wonder Woman costume redesign.
Sorry…but I haven’t seen Jim Lee give much creative, editorial, or artistic input or direction to Wonder Woman over the past few years…so why does Jim Lee get to offer his Wonder Woman redesign? Must be nice being a DC Comics co-publisher.
“What would you do to get it back? Should you get it back? Who did it? And maybe more important…why did they do it?”
Come on, people! So WW is trying to correct the timeline, once she does her costume will either revert or become an amalgamation of the two. It is so NOT a ret-con, why are people having a hard time seeing this? The fact is that sales for WW are awful for the property, DC has to try and attract new readers or the title would end up cancelled! The only WW comic in the top 500 comic sales in 2009 was Blackest Night WW! With only around 25k sales a month, consistently outsold by ’supporting’ characters like Batgirl, Supergirl and Red Robin.
There are 120 posts, dammit! This is real interest, obviously the hope is that we’ll buy #600 and #601 to see what all the fuss is about, get hooked, and stay with WW until after the costume/story/timeline changes back. I for one have never bought an issue of WW, honestly because I’ve never been interested as a character. I’ll buy this, see if it’s any good. If it is, I’ll stay with it. Simple as.
What I see is stupid fanboys not being able to accept any type of change. I think there’s nothing wrong with seeing something new every now and then. You guys bitch and complain that stories aren’t good enough the way they are now, then writers and artists give you something that looks fresh and new, and you still bitch about it that it “destroys an iconic image”. lol I’ll give the story a chance. Who knows if I’d like it or not, but I ain’t gonna bash it just because they changed Diana’s costume.
To join the majority here:
Awful.
Someone please inform Jim Lee that the 90’s are over. If we want to examine past fashion mistakes using Wonder Woman, why don’t we put her back into a white bodysuit and have her be a super-spy…. oh wait. Yeah. That’s how the post-52 series started.
We know this is temporary - just like the very similar 90’s era costume she wore while Artemis was Wonder Woman. But, boy it is going to be awful to put up with for the year or so we’re likely to see it.
And her marking her enemies with a “W” from her bracelets?!! I hope Lee Falk’s relatives don’t read this. You might have a lawsuit on your hands. (Is the new time-shifted Wonder Woman also raised by pirates?!)
I was going to add the obligatory “LMFAO” and leave it at that, but I think it’s covered…
I was just thinking that Wonder Woman needed a costume overhaul but this is NOT what I ever anticipated from DC. Whooo! That is one fugly costume… Honestly, I’m trying to remember a good design that Jim Lee did. Oh well, creativity apparently isn’t a prerequisite to excel at DC… Just look at Didio!!! What a terrible writer! That’s okay, these guys are the bosses so they can ruin whatever they want without consequence. Right Dan & Jim?
As for the story line… Sounds like “House of Meh.” This and the “Grounded” story just seem like JMS is being passive aggressive towards the former creative teams. Oh, well. Everyone thought JMS was going to be the golden boy for the Red Circle, but we see how that worked out. Brave & The Bold is great but it looks like the JMS wellspring is running dry.
Bottom line, I’m sick to death of gambling with my money on DC books and losing. This restructuring of the company sucks and it’s having a horrid effect. Give Levitz his job back… He knows how to run the company.
My pull list has dwindled to 50% of what it was 2 years ago. After this it’s going to shrink to a handful of books.
I may check out this and Superman from the library in a year or two.
I use to be a huge comics fan until about 25 years ago when DC shook up the whole universe in a little thing called Crisis. You would think since they are still trying to fix that mistake they would be a little more careful about the changes they make.
It is hinted at that this will only last a year and many of the fans are holding on to that, they figure they can hold out for that long but what if it lasts longer then what happens to all the history of WW.
I don’t read or collect like I use to but I like to keep up with what is happening and I think these kinds of changes are a mistake because they are so huge it is hard to find your way back without destroying so much more.
First two days: Celebrate Wonder Woman’s 600th issue, which you all fought hard to make happen, with these iconic images of Wonder Woman by some of the best artists to work on her.
Day three: Here’s her new costume, hope you like it!
That’s what I’m getting with this, this is how I feel.
Wonder Woman != Black Canary
Over a hundred responses, so I doubt one more voice will matter. But I must say that this is a horrible costume for Wonder Woman.
Allowing for slight stylistic tweaks over the generations, there are three costumes DC should NEVER change: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
This is a fine one-off costume for a single adventure (if she were to be fighting alongside Black Canary, for instance). Like her armor, it’s good for certain situations.
It would even be fine for Donna Troy or Cassie, but not for Diana. She is an icon, and her uniform is part of that.
This is not Wonder Woman’s costume.
To borrow (with apologies) from Jim Croce:
You don’t tug on Superman’s cape.
You don’t spit into the wind.
You don’t pull the mask off Batman.
And you don’t mess with Wonder Woman’s threads.
Ha! This is awesome. Personally I don’t like the jacket, but the rest is good and she needed a change. Seriously? I’m a big fan of her but I always thought “for god’s sake, give her pants” she doesn’t need to prove how “tough” she is by being cold. Everyone else id dressed head to toe and wrapped in capes and she needs to (still) look like a stripper? Wow… you all really DO care about her. Plus, her first appearance had her in a star spangled dress – where is the charge for authenticity there?
Screw legacy in this case. She NEEDS to be updated for all mediums. That outfit doesn’t translate well in live action any more. Fact. There is NO WAY a strong, smart woman like her would wear that today in a movie and resonate with anyone other than fan bois/girls.
And for those who think she’s supposed to be every man’s fantasy, dude - give your head a shake. No woman is meant to be a male (or female) fantasy, she’s just one for you. And that’s nice, but it was nothing to do with the direction of the character.
@ kennypick
I loved Jim Lee’s Catwoman update.
Here is IGN interview with JMS. He explains more about the changes…
http://comics.ign.com/articles/110/1102826p1.html
The STORY sounds awesome. I don’t care what she looks like…
Dear DC,
Even though I have an unbroken run of WW dating back to the 1970s, as of June 29, 2010, I’m out. I’ve stuck by this title–and many other DC books–through thick and thin, out of loyalty to the characters. You ended that as of yesterday. What I realized last night is: why should I be loyal to a character that DC itself seems not to have one ounce of respect for?
Every issue of a title one buys is essentially a “vote” not only for that character but for the creative team and the direction they’ve chosen. This dreadful revamp–which will be remembered right down there with 60s Mod Diana, Electric Superman, the Bart Allen Flash, JLA Detroit, the Archie Legion, and many other lowlights–will not get one thin dime of my money.
And while I’m at it, since I’m dropping the book of my (formerly) favorite character, nor will most other DC books. I’ve (no lie) bought every single issue of every DC superhero book since the 70s, again, because the characters are (were) so dear to me. But those days are over. I’ll be buying what few comics I still get very selectively–based solely on creative team and the direction of the book. Put in a good writer who respects the character, and I’m in. Even WW–once this stupendously ill-considered arc is over and JMS is gone–I’ll happily consider buying again. But no longer will I fork over my money month after month out of loyalty, just “riding out the storm,” when a book’s direction and creative team are dreck.
It’s a realization I should have made years ago, frankly. So, I should thank DC for saving me so much money in the forthcoming years. Really, it’ll be lots. But having been looking forward to WW #600 and DC’s 75th anniversary for so long, and then getting “rewarded” like this, I just don’t feel very thankful just now.
Looks like someone picked up a copy of Bullets and Bracelets #1 from the $.25 bin:
http://www.99centcomicsonline.com/99centa/bulletsbracelets.jpg
J Lee: Hey Joe, I reckon there are a whole load of kids out there who think the word Wonder is just so last century. Why don’t we call her Awesome Woman instead?
JMS: I think you’re on to something, Jim. But why stop there? Most of the kids reading comics are male - they don’t wanna read about some chick beating up bad guys. Why not change her name to Awesome Dude?
J Lee: Yeah. Awesome Dude. I can see that catching on. Way to go, Joe. Great way to celebrate 600 issues of Wonder Woman. Hey, Dan, you’re gonna love this…
Awful. Just AWFUL. I dropped Power Girl the second Amanda Conner wasn’t drawing it anymore because I knew damn well that no one else could draw her with the sensitivity — and indeed, the FASHION SENSE — that Conner brought to the character. Same here. It’s a terrible outfit, it makes her look like a filthy hipster, and it makes me want to punch things.
If you wanted a decent costume redesign, why not ask a woman? Preferably one with some fashion sense? The Project Rooftop outfits were 2000% better than this!
So for Wonder Woman’s big anniversary, you make her look like Black Canary? Still, as an alternate timeline that presumably will go away when this is done, this could be interesting. For some folks, I mean, I won’t be getting into this. I would rather see an old-fashioned Wonder Woman than a modernized one, with Steve Trevor at her side (or being carried over her shoulder).
But does this mean any appearance she makes throughout the DCU while this is going on will have to be retconned or otherwise “fixed” later on?
Anything I could say has already been said over 100 times so I’ll just go with “Yuck”
It is absolutely ridiculous & downright embarrassing how indignant & outraged most of you people are. You’re just proving everyone who calls comic fans whiny, childish, overreacting babies completely right.
The costume will not break any records of innovation, but it is not BAD. If this were a new character, people would hardly wink at the way she dresses. It’s weird because it’s Diana, I get it, but judging by the storyline it won’t last forever.
I’m nervous to, but JMS has about a 60/40 track record of stories being great or kind of bad, & so far for DC he’s been okay. (Though admittedly I’m not yet a huge fan of his Superman stuff.) He’s a hit or miss writer, like most writers.
We’ll just have to see how it goes. So please, act like adults & wait to see the outcome before diving into absurd hyperbole like your religion has just been shat all over. Grow up & be patient. Come on.
I think more people should read JMS interviews over at Newsarama and ComicBookResources! Because it really looks like he cares about the character a lot and want the title to sell more copies and to make the character and the word more intersting and new while keeping Dianas character.
I agree with a lot of the things he said, so I can’t wait for this storyline and it will be the first time that I’ll subscribe the title!
@thealucinaut: Amen!
This is a great time to follow DC Comics. Awesome!
@thealucinaut: Second!
I suppose it would be extremely frightening for DC if instead of complaints all they got was a collective ‘meh’. They’re anticipating this type of reaction; counting on it even. And that just shows how much they believe in their creators to carry their ideas through.
Can’t wait to check out my first WW comic!
I agree with everyone else that this costume is a BIG MISTAKE. Here are some (but not all) of the things that are wrong with it: 1) Please PLEASE give us back the original bracelets. These new bracelets look like something Michael Jackson would wear in his final years. 2) What’s up with hiding the tiara under her hair and making it nearly impossible to see that the tiara is even there? Wonder Woman without her tiara isn’t Wonder Woman — she’s just some badly dressed chick with a weird headband. 3) Why have you taken away almost all the gold on the front of her costume and turned most of it to that unattractive, pretentiously “serious” shade of red? 4) The leggings are a horrific mix of the uncomfortable and the impractical. Wonder Woman does NOT wear leggings like THESE. Ever. 5) The jacket is another ridiculous touch. It’s both too heavy and too tight for her to do any serious action in it, and at the same time it’s too lightweight to serve as a proper jacket. And why oh WHY are the sleeves pushed up for that Miami Vice look? 6) Finally, and most unforgivably, WHERE ARE WONDER WOMAN’S RED BOOTS? Is there any person on earth who wants Wonder Woman to give up her red boots? PLEASE FIX THESE MISTAKES.
@nivalia… LMFAO! Good one!
Glad all of you who are going to read this just cause of us fans who have been following her either since the relaunch 4 years ago or waaay longer are totally put off and pissed at this “new direction” you are doing exactly wat DC wants you’ll buy a few issues realize oh its still Wonder Woman and drop it like 3 issues in. But thos of us who have stuck through all of the stuff she has been through have to put up with this crap for a year or more no thank you. I think this will be the first time i drop a title and wait for the arc to be over. DC you have lost a wonder woman reader for a year.
I hate it. The jacket reminds me of early 90’s Superboy after The Death of Superman. It does not look functional. As my 12 year old daughter put it “It looks like poop. It doesn’t look like a super-hero. It looks like a normal person trying to be a super hero, and failing.” So true.
This is right up there with the ‘68 revision.
I assume that Wonder Woman’s appearances in the current DC timeline will either few and far between. Either that or she’ll be the Wonder Woman with the alternate storyline fixed. The thing is timelines in coming book are very fluid. Her multiple appearances in different comics don’t necessarily have to be happening at the same time period because it’s released that way.
It’s up to DC editorial to explain where everything fits together. I’m big on continuity, so sometimes it gets frustrating when either Marvel or DC don’t bother to tell you where everything fits together.
By the way, I have been a DC Comics reader since 1974 and this does not make me want to read it. Sorry.
P.S. I have always seen comics as comfort food. You see the cartoons how different they are you see how the movies get it wrong all the time but you can always go back to the comics and know that they will be the same and keep going forward at the same time. Superman will always have the BRIGHT RED cape and boots Batman (bruce or dick) will have the midnght blue cowel and grey Kevlar body suit and yellow utility belt and Wonder Woman will always have the WW’s breast plate and star spangled body suit with accorcies as her battle needs.
Now it seems DC is keen on shatting all over every thing that fans have grown to love all to get new readers well if you get new readers and lose all your old readers DC is it worth it?
@jorel1983 Don’t pull that card.
I’ve read Wonder Woman for years, 70’s through today. Sometimes the stories sucked and I’d drop it. Sometimes the stories were good and I’d pick it up again just like any other book. Everyone’s acting like the world’s ending and they haven’t even read anything yet.
JMS has some serious balls. I don’t like the costume but I love the idea of a new modern Wonder Woman. It’s something different and NEW, instead of just rehashing old ideas and status quos. Good move by DC.
I’m back, because I just wanted to say:
Wow! Look at the posts this is getting! I greatly appreciate everyone who’s been posting about this, because we’re showing how much we all care about Diana and the Wonder Woman.
I’m still keeping the title in my pull list, because I love Don Kramer’s art. If you like Don Kramer’s art, please keep the title or else I’m guessing that DC Comics is going to drop Don Kramer as the book’s artist.
I forgot to mention this about Jim Lee’s Wonder Woman costume redesign:
1) About leaving a “W” mark with her punches. Mythbusters proved that you can’t keep the victim alive to leave such an impresssion. Mythbusters showed that the amount of force involved would shatter the person’s skull and thus kill the person. So, DC Comics, is Diana leaving her mark with the help of magick? If not, and to keep it real, Diana would have to kill her opponents in order to leave her mark.
I didn’t read all the comments, because i got bored but it seems i’m the only one who likes this costume. I think its incredible and is exactly how one of the companies 3 icons should look. Now all we need is for an updated superman costume(ala nightwing & flamebird) and for batman to loose his over underpants. Seriously, everyone I know who isn’t into comics accuses them of being ”gay, pathetic, childish” etc because of there costumes. Wonder Woman’s was the worst of the 3. My only criticism about this costume and storyline is that its her past or whatever that has been altered-meaning this costume will only be for the duration of this story.
@thealucinaut
*claps* You are absoulutely right. The costume’s not bad (but it’s not great either plus it’s temporary) and JMS’s a capable writer. Can’t we all follow his example and wait until the comic comes out before we react? I’ve never read Wonder Woman but this could be promising.
Three things:
1: Lose the collar. I know Wonder Woman has roots in bondage. No need to advertise that fact though.
2: Classic tiara or nothing at all. That headband is just wrong.
3: Bring back the red boots. The “my pants are also my boots” thing is wack and the foot straps are silly.
Do that and you got a new Wonder Woman IMO.
Wonder Woman is in your FREAKING OFFICIAL BLOG’S BANNER! This is a terrible move. You’re ruining a great character’s heritage. I feel like the DCU writers are playing us. They say they’re giving us what we want and what we like, while throwing in bull crap like this in and claiming we will love it.
This is going to be a 8 year failure. Just like the 90’s Aquaman. His sales were down so they cut off his hand, gave him a hook, grew his hair out and took off his shirt to make him more “appealable to the times”. It didn’t work, and they finally went back to what fans loved (which makes them want to buy the comics). BAD BAD BAD management DC.
Absolutely disgusting. JMS boned Superman with his new melodramatic Superman run. And now Wonder Woman is getting it. And what’s worse, is that this costume looks like a throwback from the 90’s. Too bad I can’t post the Superman costume JL tried to redesign in a Wizard from years back, because it looks just as awful. There’s a slew of other better costume redesigns (Project Rooftop comes to mind). And that short, rolled up jacket? Really? Is she trying to look like a Salt N’ Peppa reject?
-Losing all respect for DC.
Yay for JMS!!!
Booooooooo for the horrible HORRIBLE new costume. WTF designed that thing?. Destroying #600 is bad enough, I hope that POS is nowhere to be seen in #601.
The more i hear people say that these ICONIC costumes need to be updated the madder i get. These costumes have gone through several wars, multiple presidential administrations, decades of ups and downs in sales and they have remained the same with exception of a few horrid ideas that last less than a year. and I asked then and ask now and always ask when the movies change the costumes: The costumes and characters have been around for well over 70 years Who the hell are you to change it? These characters were here before you and these characters will be here after you what makes you think you are important enough to change anything about these characters?”
People are REALLY over reacting. I personally really like the costume, because…well, I can take a character more seriously when she’s dressed like that, than when she’s running around in a onesie and a tiara. This outfit is more respectable, and I would love to see more of the DC universes female heroes dressed like this, rather than frolicking around in skimpy outfits that make the fan boys drool.
I never liked the old costume because it seemed so impractical and silly for anyone to be wearing anywhere but the beach.
So stop nerd-raging and maybe give it a chance.
@jorel1983: I’m with you brother…100%
And comic book fans wonder why we have such a ridiculous reputation. Do you not realize that the reason no one can get a WW movie greenlit is because of the damn bathing suit? Name one serious actress who can pull that off. (Besides Lucy Lawless) On top of that, none of us have read the first full issue. I for one can’t wait to read JMS’ Superman and WW. I don’t care about continuity or how this story fits into this month’s JLA book. I just want to follow well-written stories about superhumans. And remember, without change, we wouldn’t have Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, or a Batman who doesn’t shoot people.
Wow! Just, wow!
The VAST majority of the posts above are the reason people outside our nerd community tend to marginalize and ridicule us! Way to disprove our “whiny loser” stereotype folks!
I would be hard pressed to recollect such a bunch of infantile, repulsive and frankly baseless over-reactions regarding anything comic-related from recent memory. And going by the responses, I fervently hope most of the posters are younger than 14 or 15 years of age, because if not, they have more serious issues to worry about than WW’s new costume/storyline. Like maybe spelling and grammar.
It’s one thing to voice an opinion of personal like/dislike regarding the new costume, and quite another to dismiss the new direction before reading a single page!
And for the record I personally like, but unfortunately not love, the new duds! It’s certainly not terrible, and in much better taste (in every sense of the word) than the original costume!
Scroll to the very top of this blog and you will see the DC Trinity: Batman, Superman, & Wonder Woman.
A writer is allowed (for the most part) to do whatever they want, as long as they return the character the way they found them. This is how it is, and should be the way it always wl be…for future generations. We can make minor tweaks, but not huge over hauls. I like JMS but h e to disagree with his post today that says an update is needed…it was good for my grandfather, for my father, for me, and for those long after me.
i think its funny whene people are saying bad stuff about this! when they havent read the story’s yet gosh!
@jorel1983
If your saying your not allowed to change the characters, then no stories would progress because they wouldn’t be allowed to change anything about the characters. Change is good, and change is needed, otherwise there would be no progression in anything.
I’ve waited a day for this info to settle in and to ponder it. The Internet is horribly reflexive in nature and opinions are often spouted with little thought or context.
As a 34-year reader of WW, the news first struck me as some type of joke. But after a day of pondering this…
Hmmm….
Bottom line: I’m willing to give this a chance. As much as I love this character, a freshening up may be the ideal remedy and a way to put her on the radar of people who have written her off for no other reason than stereotypes, cloudy memories of a 35-year-old TV show or insecurity about embracing a character who is a woman (other than a handful of X-Men, this is still a major problem for many).
I cannot remember seeing this much fire and passion regarding this character, well, ever. Which means its working. And, of course, they’ve laid a very easy out for her to return to her status quo. But, frankly, who not freshen her up and try to garner some pop culture attention and appeal from those too closed minded to give her a chance? I’m curious as to how many people hailing this as a disgrace – looking at your Nikke Finke – have actually purchased a WW comic in the past five years. Or ever. If she had been supported this passionately, there would be no changes.
As someone who zombie-like has purchased the book for years, regardless of quality, I can say that even Gail’s run started to get a little tedious. And Gail is a terrific writer. But WW, as many other writers can attest, is tough to change, due to her iconic status and concentrated but intense fandom.
JMS certainly is making significant changes, but little tweaks aren’t doing the trick. I want to see Diana as a vital, compelling character on the A list for more than just longevity and if this move accomplishes that than so be it. The story will be the true proof.
Granted, there are some caveats. It would be a tragedy for another Donna Troy reinvention. Enough is enough. Let her, and her fans, be. And Wonder Girl has a clean enough past that that should also remain unmuddled. In addition, Diana needs to remain at her extraordinary power level; de-powering characters permanently, especially female ones, is a weak writing crutch. WW is a top-level powerhouse and DC’s greatest warrior. That shouldn’t change.
As far as the costume…it’s growing on me. Yes, it takes more than a few cues from Black Canary but I see it evolving a bit. Although I disagree with the notion that a warrior would never fight in her classic “swimsuit” – ever see “300?” They arguably wore less – much less a near-invulnerable one. But for those put off by the stylings, if this, along with the new direction, gets them to read, so what? It’s a costume. She’ll wear it again, one day. No doubt.
Essentially, I’m intrigued by this. And I’m thrilled that a writer on the level of JMS is excited about tackling Diana and making her relevant, popular and viable. It certainly sounds far more exciting than the initial “Paradise Island Gets Destroyed…Again” initial solicitation.
I’m willing to give this a shot. And I believe any fan who loves Diana will do the same.
I hope the big fish read these comments. I can’t stand the new look. I HATE IT. What’s with the stupid 80’s jacket…the choker and the gloves. Really?! Put pants on her if you want but don’t make her look like a street thug…or at best a 20-something going to the mall to steal someone’s boyfriend.
I don’t care what “new world” she’s coming from….This new Wonder Woman is NOT a majestic superhero….she’s a Valley Girl. Sheesh.
The DC Marketing boys got it all wrong. If WW needs a new look, then do a campaign. “Wonder Woman’s make-over” Roll out a few design ideas and have readers vote. Don’t force feed us this crap.
@jolewist
I agree with the sentiment that change is a positive thing, and I could see them updating Wonder Woman’s costume in some way.
That said, I think this new direction is awful. Aesthetically, it is just totally uninspired. As many others have already mentioned, it makes WW look like a cross between a biker and a 90s-era aerobics instructor. It just doesn’t square with Wonder Woman’s iconographical history.
If I were to work on a redesign, I think I would look at going more for some kind of contemporary body armor suit, something more suited for roughing it with villains. That at least would fit more into her aesthetic.
I don’t like it but if you lose the jacket I might give it a chance. Jackets don’t look like super hero outfits.
As for lady parts flopping out in the old outfit–why didn’t anyone just put bra-straps on it?
I nominate this new costume to be called: “New Wave Hooker Wonder Woman.” Who’s with me?
If this is going to be the new direction of DC, better I put to read archie, that it one very bad idea, and one Kick in the Ball, To the Fans Of WW Didio Remember The Stupid Idea of Electric Superman, Look more like Troia
I agree KennyPick
@kennypick: I’m with ya!
**Raises fist empathically**
er, empHatically.
This is a JOKE DC!!!
I awoke to find news that you are messing with Wonder Woman’s legendary costume. This is utterly, and totally, RIDICULOUS!
How dare you try and revamp Wonder Woman’s costume?! She’s the most BEAUTIFUL superheroine in history and you come out with this CRAP!? SHAME on you guys, Wonder Woman is more then some comicbook character, she’s an ICON to many who adore her!
This makes me think of the time you guys try and revamp her in the 70s by stripping her of her powers and turning her into a de-powered martial artist. You saw the global nightmare that caused you guys by doing that, with fans. (and feminists too)
DON’T change her costume, you would be making a HUGE mistake as you see with the comments left by WW fans here.
She’s BEAUTIFUL as is, just remember that…
Al
Can we have Gail Simone back, please?
@tony: I just told her how great she is over on tumblr on her blog. You can do that
Where’s I-Ching?
Wonder Woman’s look is iconic in a way that transcends practicality.
The most annoying thing is this hitting the reset button on all the wonderful work Gail Simone’s done.
I hope this is temporary.
(Looking forward to Superman’s new “Surfer Dude” look that you’ll no doubt unveil next week.)
I could see Conner going with a “Surfer Dude” look (wait, he was one for awhile, wasn’t he?), but not Clark. Preppie would be more his style.
Aside from the Black Canary resemblence, I think part of the problem with the new costume is that it looks too modern, and too “real world,” for a character who naturally comes from outside of our normal reality. But then that does fit in with the story of a Diana raised in Man’s World–and then we’re back to Black Canary, almost, but she will be struggling to get back to being Wonder Woman.
Maybe that will be a fascinating journey, especially for anyone tired of who Wonder Woman already is. I just hope it stays in this one book so it won’t interrupt WW’s presence in the rest of the DCU.
The problem isn’t that WW needs another revamp, the problem is that DC is always “revamping” her, and seldom getting it right. Things have been done to this poor woman they would never think of doing to Superman or Batman (don’t make me bring up the I Ching era). Whether it’s male writers/editors just not being able to put together a strong female character (with more than one dimension) or what I don’t know. I’ve stuck with it over the many years, always hoping, usually disappointed. The current run has actually been pretty satisfactory - decent (and better than decent at times) art, OK characterization, OK stories. Turning Diana into Black Canary II will, almost as if by some immutable law of comics, suck. There have been more revamps than I can remember of WW, and all of them which strayed away from the essentials of the character failed. Miserably. My stomach churns at the thought of another (umpteenth) “we’re going to erase core continuity with (fill in the blank - pocket universe, collapsing multiple universes, expanding multiple universes, whatever)”. Puh-leeze! And to top it off, the “new” costume is, for an Amazon, simply awful. Make it an Elseworlds special (might even work there), or just have Bobby (Steve?) step out of the shower, but get rid of it. Meanwhile, I’m off to the Midtown site to cancel my sub until DC comes to its senses.
What a joke. I haven’t read all the posts, but this costume is horrible. I’m sure DC is thrilled there are 158+ posts, but I hate it. I’m a woman and a long time WW fan, collector, and reader and what people don’t see is that one of the most appealling things about her is that her look was never one of her weapons. It was just something else about her that she embraced. I had no problem watching her fight in her iconic costume. I’m trying to be open minded about the story, but this costume makes me sick. She looks like a 90’s reject. It’s awful-the gloves make me think of Madonna and she gave those up a long time ago.
So basically, you made her *not* Wonder Woman to make her Wonder Woman?
A new costume is always fun I guess … and since her iconic look showed so much skin, the only way to be different was to cover her up a lot more. Can’t say it appeals to me — I have to agree that it does look very ’90’s, and kind of … not very exciting.
Angry and on-the-lam isn’t very original. Frankly I think Gail Simone had an excellent grasp of the character. Unfortunately JMS and Jim Lee are such “big names” I fear we’ll be stuck with this for a while.
Wonder Woman didn’t NEED a reboot — this is just the artists’ egos needing to put their stamp on a character. They are writing for themselves much more than who Wonder Woman is or could be.
Seriously, can you imagine them saying, “Okay, what happened was that Superman didn’t come to earth and get raised by the Kents, he was taken by a group of ____ and raised in an urban setting. And now he has to find the other Kryptonians who survived…”
Do that and it’s not Superman, it’s a different character with his name on it.
That’s what this is, too.
You can call her Wonder Woman and use some of the old elements of the character and think you’re being fresh and clever and original and “updating” her, but all you’ve done is make her *not* who she fundamentally is.
I don’t care how great the storytelling is — and I love the character, so I do hope it’s great — but all you’ve done is create someone new and give her Diana’s name.
Talent is taking something that is and growing it from there. It’s a cheat and a shortcut to start it over. That’s not making, that’s un-making. Any kid can kick down a sand castle.
I’m sorry, but when does it end? You gonna ditch superman’s cape for a red hoodie? This is suppose to be Wonderwoman; not Wondergirl. Make her badass, not a Marvel Rogue from the 90s with different colors.
Make the pants the color of the jacket. Lose the jacket to expose bare shoulders and put those stars on the pants. Lose the choker. Make the boots red and gold (similar style to the bracer/gloves you’ve got there). Fixed.
I have all but given up hope in comic books after thirty years of collecting. Both Marvel and DC resort to sensationalism and histrionics to boost interest. Killing characters and bringing them back in cheap and univentive ways apparently isn’t enough. Let’s take respected characters and strip away their iconic looks and redress them in something new! Except, in the case of the ‘new’ Wonder Woman costume Mr. Lee has ‘created’, it smacks of his work when he was ‘new’ back on the X-Men. Unimaginative. In case you haven’t figured it out, I don’t like the ‘new’ look for Wonder Woman. Try just writing really great stories (we miss you Gail), marketing the book as well as Batman and
stop messing with the icon you’ve integrated into our culture over the last sixty years. Epic fail. Try again.
Now, where are my Dynamite Entertainment comics…need to wash that WW costume out of my mind with good comics.
when did DC become Marvel i can see the costume change but not the history even a slight Modern take on the original story line but this was the last dc comic i collected i will not purchuse any more WonderWoman is dead
you guys ruined superman(any one rember superman red superman blue)dropped it and never looked back sorry but you lost a loyal fan and customer this is a epic fail
I think before you “redesign” a costume, you might want to CONSULT with an actual female who would NEVER wear what Wonder Woman is wearing.
#1 - The jacket. It is constricting in movement. You cannot “fight” in this jacket. It’s for show or warmth, at best.
#2 - Leggings. Really? Have you ever TRIED to do a high kick in leggings? You’d rip the crotch right out.
#3 - Shoes. You can’t really tell what they are, but they also do not look like you can run or kick in them. What’s up with the gold trying to match the lasso? You’re just drawing attention to the ugliness of the shoes.
#4 - Gloves. These are pointless and why would she need them to punch with? Unless they’re for boxing, and if she was an actual boxer…The fingerless gloves went out with the 80s. As the rest of the outfit SHOULD.
DC, PLEASE go back to the DRAWING board, or at least hire a FEW more FEMALES to conceptualize female clothing and redesign this [or you may lose Wonder Woman in LESS than 69 years].
What happpened to my earlier comments? You must have erased them. I hate this new look….I hope it gets the same response that Coke got when it changed it taste . . . only good thing is that the public outcry made the “suits” decide to bring back “Classic Coke”, not to mention lost sales. DC will or should have the same issue as many loyal to Wonder Woman will not be able to look at this new hooker-type look! It’s a shame and I will never buy another DC comic until the original costume returns……..
HORRIBLE !!!
Forget the altered timeline story and just put her back in the regular costume.
If DC wants to sell more WW comics then have Adam Hughes and Phil Jimenez take turns drawing the issues.
It’s a costume for a storyline; a more traditional Wonder Woman costume will return when this time-tampering storyline is done. Remember: Superman didn’t stay dead, and Batman got over that back-breaking incident.
Ok, I’ll admit up front that my opinion means very little here, but I have to say my piece; I like it.
And I speak as someone who was bitterly disappointed by Marvel’s fiasco of a retcon for Spider-man. But I like it. I showed my sister, and she liked the new look. I can see a bit of a nod - maybe - to Black Canary, but that’s hardly a bad thing. And I really don’t understand the violent reaction to this, all things considered, especially the comments that seem to think it looks hookerish somehow, or that it’s a nod to the 90’s. This isn’t “Rob Liefeld does Wonder Woman”. This isn’t Frank Miller. This isn’t Artemis again; good thing, because we don’t need that or want it. The 90’s had a lot of bad things in them, sure (like just about every decade ever) but they weren’t ALL bad. I could see someone dressing like this today.
This is a respectful reimagineing of a character by people who love her and want to see her be her best.
I’m in favor of it. I like the look (and I’m very happy that they didn’t put her in black or something; WW NEEDS color!). If it lasts, it lasts, and if it doesn’t it doesn’t. Time and sales will prove it, one way or another, and the public will vote with their wallets. There’s no need to get angry over it. Let’s see how it plays out.
Big upshot; I showed the picture of the new costume to my sister, who has always been turned off from comics in general by Wonder Woman’s classic look, and she liked it. For whatever it’s worth, it’s already working.
I liked the old costume, but I like who Diana is UNDER that costume more. If this gives people a chance to see and appreciate the character with a bit less of that distracting element, I say go for it.
Of course, I’m in favor of costume changes in general, as long as they’re recognizable and forgo large shoulder pads and pouches - why should Super heroes have to wear the same costume every single day? Why would they, when normal people don’t? Variety is a GOOD thing!
I’m interested in the story; I understand from the description that the alterations to the timeline are temporary, and I’m interested in the idea of using that as a device. I’ll look forward to seeing what, if anything, Wonder Woman carries forward from this run.
You have my attention, DC. Let’s see what you do with it.
Okay, since I hope to one day work on WW let me be honest. I think this is a horrible publicity stunt. Why can’t you just market her right? Why aren’t reruns of WW on stuff like Youtube or WE? Why aren’t you doing demographics searches against large markets? Why not do story lines that don’t come across as “deus ex machina?” Look there’s a population of 51% women out there. Why not actually put the time and money and push a good WW movie out? That always sells more issues. Why not lower the price of the comics to something reasonable? Three bucks, really? Why can’t I pick up comics at my local convenience store anymore? Why the heck would I want to buy a $20 trade that’s only a few pages thick? Why do a poor direct to video release for her when you do better with good story lines? Why only sell to fanboys? WW can be a huge money maker, but you’re not doing anything beneficial for her story. Why aren’t you doing a “life of (insert Hero)” series where it covers everything important, and life changing they do? Using Diana as an example you could make this time line series starting with the origin, going to her acceptance into Man’s World, fight with the Cheetah, reluctance at joining the JL being a leader of the most thinking individuals of the group, classic pivotal confrontations like, Invasion, Star-O’s Invasion, Eclipses Fight, Loss of a close friend against something she can’t defeat, Leaving the JL and taking some members with her because she can’t see they’re doing any good, put her on the front lines of taking on issues that cause these bad guys, have her journey because she can’t see she’s doing good, Have her fight against the Justice League because they’re actually doing something wrong that effects little people. Have her fall in love with Bruce, and let them almost get married, have her return to Themyscira to try and hide from her problems or leave them behind, let her find her purpose from the inside, Let her lead try to change the world, let her lead a rebellion (Political) against the U.S. because she see’s it needs new leadership, Let her see her friends age as she stays immortal, let her wonder what it would be like to be a mother, let her adopt children and raise them as Themysciras, let her wonder if Superman would be the perfect mate for her after Lois dies of old age, let Diana and Clark be serious for a while, because all the others are gone, let her become queen of Themyscira and let her see that man has hope and let her stay here as a guardian with her best friend Clark and train, and fight with new generations of heroes. Or would something like that be too far fetched with comics? Look, I know American comics have this uniqueness that story never really ends, but that doesn’t mean they have to change. Heck, Diana should be giving Barbie a run for her money.
P.S. I intended to say, “I know American comics have this uniqueness that story never really ends, but that doesn’t mean they have to do the same things over and over and over again.”
DC should fire jim lee for ruining such an Iconic Character… remember the “Superman Blue” that didn’t click?!… It’s Happening again… DC,Instead of changing Wonder Woman’s Character Design,Change your co-publisher!!!…
I agree with jsamou. Who knows, this will actually turn a few heads up?
I think I fixed it.

HORRIBLE!!!! AWFUL!!!! TERRIBLE!!!!
How can you make such a terrible thing with the iconic Wonder Woman costune.
I have been a long time Wonder Woman fan I have buy too much products of her, but now I am going to stop buying comics, movies, and all that has that ridiculus new costume, she is well known as she use to appear since her creation, if you change her costume you will be losing all the fans buying and contributions, and also the newest children fans that just saw her.
I hope you will see the great mistake you are doing and also hope we soon will see the old-fashioned glorious costume be back.
I think the Jim Lee’s redesign of Wonder Woman that was used for the oneshot title featuring Just Imagine Wonder Woman as she might have been if created by Stan Lee was MUCH better than this. That was regal, and really reflected the strength and power of the character. This looks just like a new costume for Gypsy.
This better be a one-shot because if we are seriously talking about having this ridiculous costume and relaunched out-of-continuity storyline for a year then count me out. I am pissed to think I’ll have to wait a year to read Wonder Woman which I have followed religiously over the years because of some stupid DC stunt. I just can’t believe DC thought they would get a positive reaction whatsoever from fans. I mean, REALLY???
Best comment yet @fanboi “This looks just like a new costume for Gypsy”… ROFL!!!! totally!!!
Ok… this confirm a fact… J. Michael Straczynski is an idiot that don`t know nothing of comics… first the idiotecy of “one more day” and now this… Michael, if you don`t have thew brains to work with characters with a story, don`t do that! Your stupid actitude of “I don`t like the last X years of this character, I`m to redo it because I`m a genius” is sickening… first you and Quesada destroy 20 years of history from Spiderman because “I want the Spiderman of my younth” (and no matter if oficially you say “I desagree”,you do it at the end), and now you and Jim Lee destroy 70 years of Wonder Woman`s history… because that you and some idiot DC ejecutive want to make relation to some cheesee plot for a poor Wonder Woman`s movie…no!?
After reading WW for 38 years, through thick and thin, I just cancelled my subscription. When DC thought it would be a smart idea to publish Superman and Action without Superman in them, I cancelled those subscriptions. Publish a book called “Mon-El and Guardian” if you like, but don’t insult my intelligence. When DC thought it would be smart to publish Batman and Detective without Batman in them, I cancelled those subscriptions. Publish a book called “Other People Pretending to be Batman” if you like, but don’t insult my intelligence. Publish a book called “Generic Street-Fighting Woman” if you like, but don’t insult my intelligence by pretending this is Wonder Woman.
@kennypick
The original costume looked a million times more like a hooker than this does.
NOT!!! … Maybe she can team up with BIRDS OF PREY… since she resembles that team… and just kill wonder woman… Que brutos!!!
@jolewist:
“The original costume looked a million times more like a hooker than this does.”
Then Frank Millar’s 300 was probably a documentary on Greek Gigolos.
The problem with the costume change and the ret-con of her history is that it’s unnecessary. Thats the best word I can use to describe it all. Cant they just write a great story with great art and have her kick some butt? If thats good enough for other characters why isnt it good enough for her? George Perez, John Byrne, Phil Jimenez wrote and drew great stuff for her. Greg Rucka wrote great stuff for her. Give the big three (Supes, Bats and Wondy) their presence in the Justice League where they belong and put great creative teams on each of their titles and it’ll all take care of itself. Gail Simone is a great writer and she certainly tried to do justice by Woner Woman, A+ for effort, but she never wrote anything truly epic, nor did Aaron Lopresti draw her in an awe inspiring way. The rright creative team can do this. However I will still follow the book as I love the character and I hope that JMS does a great job.
By the way Jim Lee’s design that was used in the “Just Imagine: Wonder Woman” by Stan Lee was way better.
some where in the DCU Max Lord IS LAUGHING HIS ASS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
some where in the DCU Max Lord IS LAUGHING HIS A$@ OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@pooh73: yes he’s sucking on his big Cohiba cigar and drinking his Jack Daniels in his cheap car salesman suit and laughing his ass off totally! I would have thought a main plot point in Generation Lost was to have Wonder Woman somehow see reality by binding herself in the lasso as she did with the Crows. Obviously as she’ll be hanging out with the Teen Titans as she’s only 18 she’s going to be checking the latest episode of The Hills or whatever sh*t they call tv these days.
Oh and Diana don’t forget the gum for “THE” Oracle!
@lenlenlen1: I have to disagree about the gail simone run. It was epic…there just wasn’t enough of it to have Gail realise all her plans. Now Warkiller has been retconned and so have the Thalarions! Aaron Lopresti did some amazing work. Otherwise I agree bar the JLA. I like it as it is
as usual wildclaw, haljordan and now jorel1983(well said my friend) have made my night…..meisterlegion chime in more…i know you have more to say on this….plus there is always room in the invisible mini-van
Wonder Woman did need a change in her outfit but this is not a costume worthy of a character whose rich background included many costumes. The writers aren’t doing their homework and JMS mentioned that her costume hasn’t undergone many changes in its design is both not truth and pretty insulting to the changes made by John Byrne to the character the evolution of the Eagle Chest design, skirt, cape, elongated bracers, earings and other minor and sometimes dramatic changes to her costume. This costume actually is similar to the black costume she wore with jacket when she lost her powers during the Artemis as Wonder Woman storyline. I also find the new storyline repetitive since the Amazons have been destroyed, killed, manipulated so many times its now a running joke. The beaten housewives of the DC Universe are the Amazons. Look, I enjoy a time where the character spends some time in another Costume Superman went thru a black and silver costume phase, and then the electric blue phase, and bats wore a metal suit for a while but that was Azrael. I like the suit but the story line interrupts the continuity of Wonder Girl and Donna Troi. Enough with the alternate timelines. Stick with what you got and don’t mess around with continuity. Crisis on Infinite Diane’s we don’t need more of this stuff.
So erasing the character’s timeline to create a new one is considered original and creative now? Yeah, that’s never been before. Anyways, the old costume is always gonna be more recognizable and iconic. Oh well go “Club Gear Wonder Woman”! Hey I just made up a title for her variant figure. Ha ha ha
@jolewist: What hookers have you seen dressed and clean like that?!? WW’s outfit always looke more like a swimsuit to me.
jauntyjohn I agree with you. I’m going to keep reading because I love the character so much.
Ok…We been here before, rile the fans give them a story…
then go back to where it started.oops I meant to say a GOOD story.
How many changes have us older fans seen ? Supes is dead,Batman’s back broken,Robin…which one,Barry dead,Hal dead,Ollie and on ,and on …and we start over again.
When our Princess finds her true past, hopefully she finds her
real costume . email me when the trade paperback comes out,
I’ll check the dollar box.
did anyone else have a crack *&#@! association when they saw the Oracle?
I actually love Jim Lee’s Huntress redesign. But this, the costume looks okay, but I prefer the iconic bustier better. As for the story, I’m fine with it as long as everything returns to normal at the end.
Looks pretty kick-ass. I’ll see how it fits into the story before making any snap judgments (I know, what a crazy idea eh?). She could use more distinct footwear though, red Docs maybe?
She looks like a wench from Pirates of the Caribbean. Her original costume needs no updating or changing. WW is the iconic product of the goddesses and superwomen with whom she was raised and she sure doesn’t need to be reimagined by a 21st century ‘artist.’ Give her back her identity and her costume. Girls need her today more than ever.
God you people complain alot! ok i agree with like the over 200 posts about the costume looking crap, but hey, that’s what comic books are about. You can’t keep everyone happy obviously. Just cause i didn’t like Batman RIP or Final Crisis doesn’t mean i grabbed all my comics and burned them and became a comic book atheist. Grow up people!!! Clothes don’t make the man (or in this case the woman). Stop complaining over some redesign that probably won’t even stick around for long. Support the frickin book! When One more day came out over at marvel none of their sales dropped even though that story arc was more contreversial then the clone saga! And it sucked!!! Stop whining and complaining because you won’t be able to ogle someone in a bikini.
Oh and for the record, i ogle Wonder Woman too. But i also love the character, no matter what she wears. If this does last more then a few issues i will be dissapointed but i won’t stop reading comics because of it.
I’m sorry I can’t support this. The who entire feel of WW is gone. She looks like she is a back up dancer for a Michael Jackson video. Have you ever heard if it’s not broken don’t fix it. I can’t get into a story line f I can’t feel the character. I know she needs to updated from time to time. but come on. Bring back the WW that we all understand and love.
I agree, this outdated 90’s look is the worst. Yes we can update her, through story lines? Wonder Woman is an American Icon. For those of us who are a little older, her uniform aligns her to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Her presence here is 2 B a champion for JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY, and FREEDOM. Why change? Let’s finish this story line and then give her true history back, with situtations and stories that are worthy of a Superman. Lets not down grade this character because she is a woman, or find fault. She has been great and will be again for another 70 years.
Wonder Woman is an Amazon Princess. Not a street fighter. Seriously. Give her a little class and elegance, refinement. She should be classy and cutting edge, not laid back and thug-ish. This costume sucks big time.
I can’t keep silent on this one. She doesn’t look very heroic to me any more. Quite the contrary, she looks like a soccer mom that couldn’t afford or wear a real Wonder Woman costume. Once you take the heroine out of the hero then what do you have? A joke. One that isn’t very funny. There are many ways to divert from a “bikini” look without ruining or should I destroy Wonder Woman’s image, one that could even appease the Religious Right. One of the action figures that I have has blue pants along with the “bikini” bottom. Another has a cape. The “bikini” could have been lengthened, the belt made taller. And WHY change the wrist bands??? Even all of the Wonder Girl costume variations had been better than this. Speaking of girls, my young nieces who watched all of the Wonder Woman cartoons and TV episodes and read a bunch of her comics hated it. Oh, an what happened to the patriotic red white and blue theme of Wonder Woman’s costume? Is this DC’s way of distancing themselves from the country or protesting what the country stands for? Such a protest during the Bush Administration might have made some sense, but now - what is that saying? How about it DC, what do you have to say?
Since the timeline has changed, I think the outfit is ok for a young crimefighter who is still trying to figure herself out. I love the Terry Dodson WW … I think he drew her the best in the old costume. The new costume is decent, but that jacket…gotta lose the jacket. These are comics people and you can always add new dimension in the WW mythos. That’s what great about this medium…you can turn stories on their heads. Down the road there will be a desire, I’m sure, to see the ‘throwback’ Amazonian Princess again. I think it’s ok to do something new here and see where it all goes. As a woman, and as much as I love the old costume, I like to see her a bit more clothed. I just hope the new series has good writing. Gail Simone will be sadly missed…she writes female characters well…much better than Rucka and those guys IMHO.
Wonder Woman should remain in her original outfit and the new one should be seen when she changes just like when she changes into a motor bike costume. LINDA CARTER (best looking brunette in America)
I hope she will back in her original costume..
I’m going to have to agree with the many fans who dislike this. As a 19 year old female, I like to think I’m part of the ‘younger crowd’ you were hoping to appeal to with this change-but it’s a major turn off. Silly as it sounds, when you design a costume, it should be something people want to wear for Halloween. Because of its dated aspects and lack of iconic traits, people would mistake me for a grunge rocker from the 90’s if I wore this.
As to the point of ‘practicality’, first, speaking as a martial arts instructor, that would be awful to wear and be fighting in. It looks entirely too hot, and in leggings that tight, one wouldn’t be able to kick above their waist. Personally, it never bothered me that Wonder Woman wore a strapless top (and I consider myself a feminist!). It seemed to state: I’m a woman, and I’m proud-I don’t need to cover up to be strong. This new costume, with its baggy jacket and dark colors, is almost trying to make her more masculine. And as to the fact that she might fall out: the woman is pretty magic-can’t we all assume the Greek Gods could do something for her to the equivalent of two sided tape? Seriously. People who wonder that have never actually worn a strapless gown.
And overall, it looks like she stole Superboy’s first costume.
Now, I’m no fan of the almost sexual costume she wore during Artemis’ brief reign as Wonder Woman, but at least that looked strong and unashamed that she was female. We all know, courtesy both major comic publishing companies, that big costume changes never really work. It’s the ones that get little touches to modernize them that stay relevant. All I know is, this woman doesn’t look a thing like Wonder Woman.
Let me reiterate my irritation that this costume is mentioned as being done to “be taken seriously”. So women have to dress like men to be taken seriously? Shame on you DC.
I always loved that Wonder Woman was powerful but also embraced her femininity. There was no forgetting the ‘Woman’ in Wonder Woman. I would just look at her comics and feel how strong she was. But this look of angst ridden young adult is not relatable nor inspiring-and I happen to be a young adult. We don’t want another character struggling to find her identity-we want an example of a character who knows who she is and is fighting to represent that. Suddenly Wonder Woman has become one face in a million.
And as to the plot: whatever. It could be well written. Between Marvel and DC, I’m tired of waiting through ‘alternate’ story arcs. Why can’t we do one-shots or separate titles if we feel the need to write alternate and separate stories? All I know is, when it comes to any ‘reset’ I just don’t care anymore. As a comic lover who wasn’t born until the 90’s, it’s still hard work sometimes to keep everything straight. I literally had to study books in order to find some sense of consistency (though DC is better about it than others…).
So kudos if this is a good story, but, for me, it feels irrelevant. What if they did this on your favorite tv show? Take Fringe for example: one episode where it was a ’story’ and they were retro was a cute, new, but temporary take on the characters. It still reiterated who they were, and even gave you a deeper feeling for the plot. But it didn’t last the whole season. I mean-imagine turning to your favorite show only to find all the characters were different for one season-and that this season wouldn’t affect the following one. Where’s the desire to watch that season? It just feels like you’ve lost that show for a year. Why are comics any different?
This is why you can’t appeal to a new, larger market: because there’s no easy way to get your foot in the door precisely because you keep doing overhauls like this. You know what you should do: publish some epic re-tellings of the character’s origins (don’t change anything!), establish what their plot is, maybe even toss some books out there, do a tv special-and bam! People would feel comfortable picking up a comic book rather than like they’re about to fall into a pit.
Anyway, that’s my advice. In the end, the truth is this just means a year without Wonder Woman for me, though I might pick up the graphic novel for this run in the library someday out of mild curiosity.
one word: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The new costume is all right. Where are her boots, though? She needs proper boots to kick some butt. I hate the leggings-are-her-boots look.
