Jeff Lemire on SUPERMAN #700

It all starts with Superman.

My life long obsession with comics began at age four, when my Mom bought me a DC Blue Ribbon Digest at the grocery store one week. That little pocket sized volume reprinted classic Superman stories from the 50′s, 60” s and 70′s. Of course I didn’t know that at the time, to my young eyes they were all new and all exciting. I distinctly remember sitting and attempting to copy the opening splash from the classic Superman Red/Superman Blue issue by Curt Swan. That was it. For better or for worse I was hooked.

My love of comics has taken me all over the cartoon map over the years, but I always come back to the DC heroes of my childhood. And no matter when I return, standing there fists on hips, red cape blowing, is Superman.

There have been so many classic Superman comics over the years, but my personal favorites have to be Morrision and Quitely’s All-Star Superman, and Alan Moore’s farewell to the Silver Age “Whatever Happpened To The Man of Tomorrow?”. Both capture everything that is great about the character and everything I love about reading comics.

But now it seems the days of me being an impartial fan of Superman have ended. I’ve been asked to write the new Superboy monthly series at DC! And, while it may not be Clark Kent flying around Smallville anymore, I can’t help but feel I’m still a part of his 75 year legacy. Artist Pier Gallo and I are proud to join The Superman Family, and even prouder to be a part of his anniversary celebration in SUPERMAN #700! I’ve been lucky enough to contribute a small essay outlining some of my plans for Conner Kent in that milestone issue. You’ll also find a sneak peek at some of Pier’s amazingly detailed artwork as well.

Comics are my life. I live and breath them every day and it all started with Superman, Curt Swan and a small grocery store in Essex County, Canada. Thanks Mom.

And now, the cover to ABSOLUTE ALL STAR SUPERMAN

Monday, June 21st, 2010

By Alex Segura

This week is all about celebrating the Man of Steel and the many creators and eras he’s been involved with.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t include writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely’s epic, emotional and classic run on ALL STAR SUPERMAN.

But why re-hash the obvious when we can bring out something new? Namely, a beautiful new image of Superman that will grace the cover of the Absolute Edition of ALL STAR SUPERMAN, which hits in October?

If you thought we had a blog packed with creators, news and excitement when BATMAN #700 came out, you’re in for a treat. As some of you know, this week marks the 700th issue of SUPERMAN. The anniversary issue not only features a first look at J. Michael Straczynski and Eddy Barrows’ “Grounded” storyline, but is full of clues and hints about the other titles in the SUPERMAN family, including ACTION COMICS, SUPERGIRL and the new SUPERBOY series from Jeff Lemire.

Before we dive into all the goodies, here’s a hint of what’s to come:

• Comments from Superman writers and artists, past and present, talking about the charater, his significance.

• A sneak peek at not only SUPERMAN #700, but beyond – including Paul Cornell and Pete Woods’ upcoming run on ACTION COMICS, Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle’s SUPERGIRL and the new SUPERBOY series.

• And – well, that’d be telling. Suffice to say, we’ve got a handful of surprises that’ll keep you on your toes and near a computer.

Speaking of, we’ve got a SUPERMAN-centric image that’ll knock your socks off. But more on that later.

A few links of note for Friday

Friday, June 18th, 2010

By Alex Segura

It’s been a hectic and exciting week here at The Source and beyond, so we thought it’d be a good idea to take a minute to round up some of the more notable posts from the last few days:

• DCE Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns unveiled an exclusive look at a live-action screen test for Blue Beetle.

• Speaking of Blue Beetle, we announced exclusively that Jaime Reyes would be a playable character in the BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD video game, with an exclusive still to boot.

• And as you saw earlier today, we also had an exclusive look at Warner Premiere’s BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD DVD.

• We also showed off a first look at the BLACKEST NIGHT HCs, BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #3, Paul Cornell’s first issue on ACTION COMICS and the first part of the JLA/JSA crossover.

• Over on our sister blog GRAPHIC CONTENT, you can find all things Greendale, including a roundup of the impressive press coverage the book has garnered — including a feature in THE NEW YORK TIMES.

THE BLEED, your spot for all things WildStorm, has been spotlighting Brian Wood and Rebekah Isaacs’ new DV8 series for most of the week as well.

And there you have it. Should be more than enough to get you through the work week’s final hours, eh?

SOURCE EXCLUSIVE: Blue Beetle to be a playable character in BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD video game

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

By Alex Segura

Some cartoons are so much fun, that even as adults, we want to immerse ourselves even more in their world. BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD is a great example. A high-energy mash-up of the best of old school Batman with a decidedly modern twist, BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD makes for a fun romp that appeals to fans young and old. But how to extend the experience beyond watching the show?

Well, as some of you know, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced earlier this year plans for BATMAN: THE BERAVE AND THE BOLD THE VIDEOGAME, an action-adventure game based on the popular animated series. Slated to hit this fall for Wii and Nintendo DS, the game allows fans to play alongside Batman and many of his allies in the DC Universe to take on dozens of popular villains.

And as you’ll only find out here, we can confirm that the Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes, will be one of the playable characters.

Don’t believe us? We’ve got an exclusive shot of the Blue Beetle in action, courtesy of our friends at WB Interactive. Click below to enlarge.
