Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern: REVEALED!

Monday, July 19th, 2010

By Alex Segura

As some of you may have seen around the web today, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY debuted the cover to their upcoming Comic-Con issue, and on said cover is none other than Ryan Reynolds, star of the June 2011 Warner Bros. GREEN LANTERN film, in costume. Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the cocky test pilot gifted with an immensely powerful Green Lantern ring powered by will. Needless to say, it looks amazing. It’s exciting to see the costume for the first time.

Meet the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS

Monday, July 19th, 2010

By Alex Segura

thunderagentsfq1

What happens when the very powers that drive you to be a hero are also killing you?

Do you burn out or fade away?

Do you resign yourself to your fate or risk it all to die a hero?

Those are just some of the questions being faced by the new heroes that take the mantle of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents – a new and modern take on the classic 1960s property for today’s reader.

A while back, we showed off a teaser image announcing that the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents – the international UN heroes – would be joining the DC Universe. Well, now we’re ready to unveil some exciting details about these classic heroes and their latest incarnation.

Starting in November, a new version of The Higher United Nations Defense Enforcement Reserves will reach comic book fans, courtesy of writer Nick Spencer (JIMMY OLSEN) and CAFU, in a new ongoing series featuring a 20-page lead story and 10-page co-features.

Featuring a new batch of recruits brought in to take on the mantle of the original Agents, the team faces some difficult choices of their own, while revisiting the classic team’s troubled past and deadliest threats.

Spencer and CAFU will handle the main feature with an all-star lineup of artists handling the co-features. And a certain Mr. Frank Quitely is the artist on the cover to T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1, with a variant cover by Darwyn Cooke.

Wil Moss, editor of the new series, swung by The Source to give us a few more details beyond the basics.

“The new series casts the team as a covert special ops force dealing with global threats the rest of the DCU don’t even know exist — all the while struggling with their own choices to become agents and the tortured pasts they’re running from. With character-first storytelling and threats exploding from real-world headlines, this relaunch of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS will offer something new, different, and daring for both today’s broader comics audience and fans of the original team.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS will prove that there are still fresh new ways to approach the superhero team concept nd it will provide a platform to show off two very talented new creators — the writer, Nick Spencer, and the artist, CAFU.”

Thanks, Wil! T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1 hits in November.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents is (c) and (R) Radiant Assets, LLC

STATIC ongoing series to launch in 2011

Friday, July 16th, 2010

By Alex Segura

static

One of the most beloved characters to come out of the Milestone/DC partnership and a presence in TEEN TITANS (not to mention a star of his own cartoon series), Static will be starring in his own ongoing series, launching in 2011 and written by Felicia Henderson.

We’ll have more details on the series – including the art team – in the coming months, so stay tuned to this very blog. In the meantime, lets check in with Felicia about what her plans are for the series:

“When I met Dan DiDio, the first character we ever discussed was Static. Writing Teen Titans gave me an opportunity to play with this character a little. Now he’s getting his own book and I’m writing it! I’m a big Dwayne McDuffie’s fan, so it’s a privilege to reimagine the coming-of-age of a character he created. If not for the big bang, Static would be a regular, awkward, teenage guy trying to find himself — chasing girls, playing video games, downloading underground mixes of his favorite music. Instead, he has no time to find himself because the call of the superhero has found him. It’s a comic book writing dream for me.”

archietitans1-cover

Turns out that Sidekick City, the hometown of the beloved TINY TITANS shares a downtown area with another famous city – Riverdale, home to LITTLE ARCHIE and his friends JUGHEAD, BETTY, VERONICA and REGGIE. News to you, huh? Well, it’s also news to the Tiny Titans, the all-ages and all-fun take on the classic DC heroes, and the Archies!

What happens when the two groups meet? Archies in costume? Tiny Titans at Pop’s? What happens when Robin meets Jughead? Will Kid Flash crush on Betty or Veronica? Well, we’re not telling. But we can guarantee a heavy dose of all-ages fun from the Eisner-winning team of Art Baltazar and Franco, as two of comics most loved characters join forces for an awesome and memorable adventure.

Art and Franco – what say you?

“I can’t believe I get to say AW YEAH TITANS! But now I get to say AW YEAH LIL’ ARCHIE too!!!!” Franco said. “ This is so cool cause for years I’ve been searching for Pop’s Chok’lit Shoppe! I’ve always wanted to challenge Jughead to an eating contest! I’ve been a fan of comics for years and whenever there was a cross over of characters in epic proportions I was there. The chance to work on this historic crossover been Archie and the gang AND the Titans is right up there in the sense of epicness!!! We finally get to find out how these guys meet and interact and what Archie will look like with a cape and what Robin looks like with a sweater? Popular mainstream is going to go all laughs with this one! AW YEAH HISTORIC!!”

“Aw Yeah Titans!!! Aw Yeah Archie!!! Wow!” said Baltazar. “What an historic crossover of Golden Age proportions! When I was asked to design Little Archie characters for a possible crossover, I was speechless! This is HUGE! Historical! Two of the biggest and awesomest Comic Companies teaming up for the first time…EVER!!!! Its an honor to be part of the Crossover Event of the New Comic Millenium! AW YEAH All Ages All the TIME!!!”

Tyler Kirkham – exclusive to DC and drawing GREEN LANTERN CORPS

Friday, July 16th, 2010

By Alex Segura

utbln_cv1

It’s been anything but a slow week here at The Source, and with San Diego just a few, short days away, we’ve got a handful of news items for you to mull over. Here’s one right now.

Tyler Kirkham, known for his work at Top Cow and Marvel’s Ultimate Fantastic Four has not only signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics, he’ll also be handling the art duties on GREEN LANTERN CORPS with inker BATT, starting in October. This pairs him with new regular writer Tony Bedard for a space epic we’re sure will continue in the title’s fine tradition.

glc53cvr1

And, to give you an idea of what’s in store, we’ve included a handful of lovely Kirkham pieces for you to gaze at – including the cover to October’s GREEN LANTERN CORPS and UNTOLD TALES OF THE BLACK LANTERNS #1. What’s the latter, you ask? We’ll have details on Monday. In the meantime, what does Tyler think of the whole deal? Let’s ask him, shall we?

glcor_cv53

“I am absolutely ecstatic to be working at DC and on Green Lantern Corps. It’s great to be involved in the DC universe right now. They are doing such big things. Its also cool to be on a Green Lantern title. Not only are there tons of great characters, but they are all fun to draw, because they are so Diverse. Also with the movie coming out soon it makes things even more exciting. I am having so much fun already and I’m only an issue in. The direction Tony is taking the story fits my art style very well. Also to be working with Batt again is a true pleasure. After all he is the best inker in the biz in my opinion. Plus to have Nei Ruffino coloring my work is amazing. I have worked with her on a couple small things in the past, but have always wanted to work with her on a bigger scale.”

Ragman returns in SUIT OF SOULS

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

By Alex Segura

ragman-1

This October, writer Christos Gage and artist Stephen Segovia reintroduce readers to Rory Regan, a man who’s often struggled to reconcile the burden he carries as Ragman, the protector of society’s forgotten, with his own strained faith.

Could the souls he has consigned to redeem themselves within his suit have the answers he needs about the great beyond? What mysteries surround Rory’s own father? Gage and Segovia give readers a look inside one of the DCU’s most unique and peculiar heroes in this one-shot event.

The one-shot, RAGMAN: SUIT OF SOULS hits in October.
