BATMAN AND ROBIN, meet Peter and Patrick

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

By Alex Segura

When we announced there’d be a new creative team on GREEN LANTERN CORPS, one of the first questions people asked was “Where’s Pat Gleason going?” Well, we have an answer for you. Just be patient.

Oh, right. You have been patient. Well, then we’re happy to announce that the famed GREEN LANTERN CORPS team of writer Peter Tomasi and artist Patrick Gleason will be reuniting as the regular team for BATMAN AND ROBIN, starting in November.

What do these guys have in store for the dynamic duo? Peter?

“I’m incredibly excited to be working on BATMAN AND ROBIN! I mean who the hell wouldn’t be?!? I’ve enjoyed my few forays into the Bat Universe with NIGHTWING, BATMAN: BLACKEST NIGHT, and BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS, and was always hoping I’d get a chance to tackle a main Bat book, so to be able to take the monthly reins from Grant on such a tremendous book is a dream come true and it’s going to be a blast, especially when my partner in crime is artist Patrick Gleason, who I’ve had a great working relationship over in GREEN LANTERN CORPS!”

And if he didn’t seem excited enough, let’s pass the mic to Patrick:

“I can’t wait to get started! Drawing Batman, Robin and Gotham city is something I’ve dreamt of sinking my teeth into for a very long time! Recently I’ve even had to start carrying around a sketchbook wherever I go because I constantly get these ideas of cool images, or random details that I want to use somewhere in the book.

I am incredibly grateful to DC for the opportunity to be added to the list of fine talent who have laid pen and pencil to the Dark Knight. Also I’m very happy to continue working with Peter Tomasi. With him at the helm you just know we’re in good hands and Batman and Robin will continue to be a great ride!”

And before you start asking the question I know is on the tip of your tongue, here are a few words of advice: Wait a few days.

We have a few more announcements on tap, folks, so keep it tuned to The Source.

CONFIRMED: Tony Daniel ongoing writer/artist on BATMAN

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

By Alex Segura

bm702022

The Bat-news continues to roll in, with more clues and teases about what exactly is happening in the Batman universe in November. Here’s another piece of the puzzle, involving Mr. Tony Daniel.

It’s simple enough. Tony’s done a bang-up job as both writer and artist on the regular BATMAN series, and after a brief break thanks to the epic 700th anniversary issue and his team-up with writer Grant Morrison to bridge the gap between “Batman R.I.P.” and FINAL CRISIS, Tony Daniel will return to the title as the ongoing writer and artist. Not bad, eh? Let’s see what the man himself has to say about it.

“I am thrilled and honored to be tapped for further writing duties on the world’s most iconic super hero, Batman. I look forward to telling exciting tales with the caped crusader and exploring old and new characters alike. I will continue to put my best foot forward on each and every page.”

Nicola Scott joins J.T. Krul on TEEN TITANS

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

By Alex Segura

Not long ago, we announced that GREEN ARROW writer J.T. Krul would be adding DC’s top teen team to his resume and taking over as the ongoing writer of TEEN TITANS, starting with October’s #88. But who’s handling the art side?

None other than Nicola Scott, who’s built up a long list of credits at DC, including SECRET SIX, BLACKEST NIGHT: WONDER WOMAN and the main WONDER WOMAN title. Scott and Krul will join forces to usher in a new era for the teen series, featuring some familiar faces and a few surprises.

Before we touch base with Nicola, let’s get some background from J.T. Take it away, sir:

“When Rachel Gluckstern and I started formulating a plan for Teen Titans and the discussion turned to artists, Nicola Scott was at the top of both our lists. No joke. I had marveled at her work in the past on Birds Of Prey and Secret Six, but it was her work on Blackest Night: Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman that really catapulted her to the top of what I must say is an incredible heap of talented artists at DC. She just gets it. Character. Emotion. Action. Nicola is what I like to call a TP – total package. Having her usher in a new age of Teen Titans is going to be something special. And this cover to our first issue is the tip of the iceberg – trust me. Oh, and wait until you see her take on Damian. That’s right, I said it. What would Teen Titans be without a Robin.”

That’s right, folks. Damian. More on that later. What say you, Nicola?

“Teen Titans has been one of the titles at DC that I’ve wanted to draw since deciding to work in comics. I became aware of the title when Wolfman and Perez made their ground breaking 80′s run and I’ve loved pretty near every incarnation since.

When Rachel approached me about the title, told me JT was writing and who was on the team, I was sold! JT’s nailed it: Character, tone, direction. He has blown me away. We’re just wrapping up the first (bumper sized) issue and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turning out. And, lucky me, I was able to bring Doug Hazlewood (inker) and Jason Wright (colorist) along for the ride.

I love each of these characters, JT has them note perfect and I’m having a blast! This is the Teen Titans as they should be.”

TEEN TITANS #88 hits in October. Oh, and speaking of Damian…

Marc Guggenheim joins up with the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

By Alex Segura

jsav2_cv44

This October, the Justice Society of America is getting a new chairman. And, by “chairman,” we mean a new writer: Marc Guggenheim. Guggenheim, who has a long list of film and comic book credits, will bring his fast-paced storytelling and refined eye to one of the DCU’s most legendary teams.

We’ll have more info on the new artist joining Guggenheim for his run, but we can announce superstar Shane Davis will be providing the lovely covers, like the powerful image above. What more can we say about the new direction? Well, take it away, Marc:

“For me, one of the advantages of working for “the Big Two” is getting to play with the biggest toys in the sandbox. The Justice Society so fits that category, my inner fanboy is squealing with delight. I was a huge fan of the JSA back when they were ensconced on Earth-2 and I was introduced to their exploits in the pages of Adventure Comics and the annual JLA/JSA crossovers. Our goal is to craft as JSA run for the ages and I think we’ve come up with something that’s revolutionary while still feeling uniquely “Justice Society.” Pay close attention to that second word. Big clue there.”

Meet your new DETECTIVE COMICS writer: Scott Snyder

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

By Alex Segura

It’s not a stretch to say one of the most recent success stories to come out of Vertigo is AMERICAN VAMPIRE, a neo-horror classic-in-the-making that has garnered critical and commercial acclaim with it’s modern and exciting take on vampires in America.

Well, bats and vampires aren’t distant branches on the family tree, either.

So, it’s with great pleasure that we announce that AMERICAN VAMPIRE writer Scott Snyder will be stepping into the DCU with a major new assignment – ongoing writer of DETECTIVE COMICS, starring Batman, starting in November. Can it get better? Sure — Snyder is now exclusive to DC Comics.

And Snyder’s no stranger to The Dark Knight, as the photo above shows. But we’ll let him get into that. Take it away, Scott:

“I’ve read Batman religiously since the 80′s, and there are many stories dear to my heart – from Year One to the Cult to No Man’s Land to Hush and The Long Halloween – but I’ve been particularly amazed by what the Batman team in general, and Grant specifically, has done with the character over the last few years. I couldn’t be more thrilled or honored to be working on Detective right now … this is honestly my dream job. As for the series, I want to play things pretty close to the vest for now, but I can tell you that it’ll star Batman, and will focus heavily on his CSI work and hardcore mysteries set around Gotham. The back-up will center on Commissioner Gordon and involve a certain case – and a dark figure – from his past that comes back to haunt him in present day Gotham. The feature and back-up will be stand-alone, but will affect and inform each other. Again, huge thanks to Mike Marts and everyone in the great Bat-family for making a place for me in Gotham – I’ll work hard to earn my keep. And please, DC Nation, let me know what you think, too!”

I’m sure they will. Thanks, Scott! And stay tuned to The Source for more news today and the rest of the week.

David Finch takes on BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT as writer/artist

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

By Alex Segura

We promised big news. It doesn’t get much bigger than this.

When we announced superstar artist David Finch was going to be joining the ranks of the DC NATION, it was with the news that he’d be handling the covers on BRIGHTEST DAY and ACTION COMICS. But not only is Finch a all-star caliber cover artist, he’s a master storyteller. Fans got a taste of the compelling narrative Finch can create visually with the pages he did in BATMAN #700, paired with writer Grant Morrison.

But we can now add another credit to Finch’s vast resume: writer/artist.

Of an ongoing Batman series.

Starting in November, Finch will take the reins of BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, a new ongoing Batman title featuring the hyper-detailed and kinetic artwork Finch has become known for plus his unique and yet classic interpretation of the Caped Crusader. The series will also see him paired with legendary inker Scott Williams.

Can’t wait until November? The fun begins in October, with BATMAN: THE RETURN, a one-shot featuring Finch’s masterful pencils and words by Morrison, kicking off a new era for the Dark Knight and giving fans a quick taste of what’s coming up for Batman.

dkissue1pg5sm

So what does Finch have in store for readers, both art-wise and as the writer? We caught up with him to get the lowdown on the new book:

“I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’ve wanted to draw Batman for a very, very long time. Batman and his world embody everything that I love about Superhero comics, and I could not be happier that I’ve gotten this opportunity!

Maybe the greatest thing about Batman is his versatility as a character. He can be so many things to so many people. For me though, the Neal Adams, Denny O’Neil issues from the early 70′s are the most definitive. That work casts a very long shadow over every Batman book that has come out since, and I think its a testament to it’s strength that close to 40 years later it remains modern and vital. Batman is at his best with his hands dirty, chasing the worst of the worst with everything on the line. He’s a detective, first and foremost. But he’s also the enforcer. Nobody gets away with crime under Batman’s watch, and he makes sure they think twice before they step over the line again.

The Dark Knight takes Batman outside what he knows, into a world of demonology, dark arts, and mystery. He’s the ultimate detective, faster, stronger and smarter than any villian, but now he faces creatures to whom logic and mortality don’t apply.

I want Dark Knight to be true to Batman’s street level, crime fighter roots. He’ll face a rogues gallery that we’re all familiar with, but this book will take him on a darker path where he’ll be stretched to his physical and psychological limits.”

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #1 hits in November.
