There are some characters that connect so strongly with readers that they take on a life of their own, becoming more than just ink on a page. Like modern fables and folklore, comics create strange and exciting worlds and landscapes for readers to visit and experience, and they populate these worlds with characters so well-defined, it’s as if we’d known them forever.
Neil Gaiman’s SANDMAN is one such work. An epic, 75-issue opus that was both genre-bending and trend-setting during its original release and to this day, it, like WATCHMEN and a number of series, is what many point to when discussing comics as high art. It’s not a stretch to call it a masterpiece.
But why are we talking about SANDMAN on the DCU blog, you ask?

Heroes are a lot like us. They have jobs. Significant others. Bills. And pets.
But what if those animals they keep around as loyal companions also fought crime?
That’s the questions DC and Capstone imprint Picture Window Books – a children’s publisher of illustrated fiction and nonfiction – hope to answer with DC SUPER-PETS, a new series of leveled chapter books. The project is slated to last through fall 2012 and produce 24 new titles for young readers.
Debuting in January 2011 with six titles, DC SUPER-PETS will team a number of Picture Window Books writers with TINY TITANS writer/artist and Eisner winner Art Baltazar. The full-color books introduce readers to the super-strong, fast, and smart pets of the DCU heroes, who also patrol the streets and battle villainy. The series will be available in the trade and school library market.
The first six books in the DC SUPER-PETS series will include:
Heroes of the High Seas
The Fastest Pet on Earth
Midway Monkey Madness
Pooches of Power!
Royal Rodent Rescue
Super Hero Splash Down
