First, let me get the obvious out of the way: There’s a ton of exciting stuff happening in the DCU.
Whether it’s Bruce Wayne returning, BRIGHTEST DAY’s ongoing mysteries and reveals or the edgy adventures of the SECRET SIX, nearly every title has its share of surprises and “Wow” pages and moments. And those pages include some great art. So why not put the spotlight on a few of those moments?
That’s the conceit behind “This Just Happened.” Simple, right? So, let’s grab this week’s stack and check out some of the cool moments or shots from the latest week of DCU books.
Can Jesus Merino draw Alan Scott or what? JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #43, which serves as an epilogue to the JLA/JSA crossover “Dark Things,” features a lot of soul-searching and reflection. Which is to be expected when you’re coming out of a major crossover event featuring two of the DC Universe’s biggest teams. But look at that splash page. Merino has a knack for making every scene dynamic, and this panel’s a perfect example.
A lot of people forget just how deadly Gorilla Grodd can be. Maybe they’re fooled by his frighteningly sharp intellect or by the fact that he’s a giant gorilla, and some people think gorillas are cute. Well, this one isn’t. And he’ll tear your head off in a second if given the chance. Now, show that via the pen of Sean Chen and we’ve got an image none of us want to see come to life.
J.T. Krul has a knack for Green Arrow. Heck, he’s got a knack for most of the characters he’s writing. This is Ollie in his element, roaming the streets of Star City and pinning down his enemies with a well-timed trick arrow. Artist Diogenes Neves manages to pull off a hat tip to the lies of Mike Grell and Neal Adams while putting his own spin on writer J.T. Krul’s take on the Emerald Archer.
Now, we knew Don Kramer could draw an excellent Wonder Woman, right?
How about scary, creepy and straight up ugly monsters?
Yeah, he can do that, too.
Cool, huh?
Now, lemme turn it to you, Source readers — what were the cool moments you saw this week?

Greetings, DC Nation! It is my pleasure to let you know that it’s time for another amazing entry in the DCU animated original movie library.
“Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” is an all-new feature based on the classic Supergirl storyline written by Jeph Loeb and featuring artwork by the great Michael Turner. It’s available on Blu-Ray Combo Pack, movie and for download on 9/28/10.
Here’s a brief rundown of the plot:
“When a spaceship splashes down in Gotham Harbor, Batman and Superman encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as Superman’s. When Darkseid gets wind of this, he has the Kryptonian abducted and brought under his control on Apokolips. It’s up to Batman and Superman to retrieve the Kryptonian, forcing them to infiltrate Darkseid’s hostile world where superpowerful threats lurk around every corner.”
This movie also features an exceptional voice cast. Fan favorites Tim Daly(Private Practice) and Kevin Conroy (China Beach) return to their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. The cast also includes Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as Darkseid, seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner (Up) as Granny Goodness, and Summer Glau (Serenity/Firefly) as the voice of Supergirl.
And if this isn’t enough for you, “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” also features an original Green Arrow animated short. For more information on the movie, a trailer and more information on the other bonus features, please check out warnervideo.com/supermanbatmanapocalypse.
We hope you enjoy “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” (I know I will). Catch you back here next week.
Be seeing you,
Ian Sattler — Senior Story Editor, DCU

We’ve got an especially awesome collection of variants for you this week, so make sure you’ve got the time to change your desktop pattern before you leave today. Where to begin? Well, how about BRIGHTEST DAY #12, by superstar artist Ivan Reis? If that’s not enough, we’ve got two JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #50 variants, one by our very own Co-Publisher Jim Lee and another by artist Mark Bagley. Not enough? How about George Perez’s two DC UNIVERSE: LEGACIES covers, for #5 and #6 as one image? And rounding out the whole batch is a lovely piece of P. Craig Russell artwork, which will serve as the variant to ACTION COMICS #894. Enjoy.

A mysterious new villain is casting a long shadow over Gotham City at arguably the worst moment possible.
With the city’s heroes overtaxed and in disarray, will they be able to band together and bring down their deadly adversary?
Oh, and Bruce Wayne’s back. Remember him?
An icon returns. A villain is born and the protectors of Gotham are forced to not only defeat the immediate, but cope with the array of questions that Bruce’s return brings up.
Starting in October, readers will begin to experience BRUCE WAYNE – THE RETURN HOME, a series of one-shot specials spotlighting the many key players in Batman’s world, spotlighting not only their attempts to defeat a looming threat, but also to come to terms with the return of their mentor, father figure and friend – for better or worse.
Batgirl no more?
Catwoman’s love rekindled?
A Robin abandoned?
Those questions and a few more will be answered – with some more raised – in October. You’ve seen a few of the teaser images above. Pop back to the blog tomorrow to see more, with some answers and clues from Batman Group Editor Mike Marts.
