DCU in 2011: Marc Guggenheim on his Justice Society plans

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

Marc Guggenheim took over Justice Society last fall, and just three issues in he’s already building into something big.

Curious for hints at where it’s going? Or a few reasons to jump on board? We’ll let Marc take it away:

“Superstar artist Scott Kollins and I are blowing out all the stops to make 2011 the year of the Justice Society. We’ve gotten a really great response thus far from readers about our new approach, which attempts something that’s never been done in comics before (and that’s not an easy thing to do): Establish a literal society of super-heroes. In Issue 44, we introduced the city of Monument Point to the DCU. By the end of our first arc, we’ll have made Jay Garrick, the original Flash, mayor of the city and populated it with a wide variety of heroes — some new, some old; some legacy heroes, others ones you wouldn’t expect to see in a “JSA book.”

I know some fans might be concerned that the essence of the Justice Society as they know it might be lost with this new approach, but believe me, we’ll be staying true to what the JSA is all about — being the forefathers of the DCU — while maintaining our focus on the original JSAers you know and love. In fact, you’ll find that this new status quo energizes them in ways that even the characters themselves didn’t expect.

All this will be in place by the end of our first arc — Issue 49 — thus setting the stage for our extra-sized fiftieth anniversary issue. We have a lot of things up our sleeves. I know fans will be extra-excited about one of them, which I’ll hint here. Two words: All. Star.

Stick with us or jump on board. You’ll be glad you did.”

Here’s a bonus preview of Justice Society of America #47, on sale at the end of this month.

DCU in 2011: Fiona Staples to guest artist on JONAH HEX #66

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

My appreciation for Fiona Staples’ art had been chronicled on these blogs in long detail, but to sum up my point of view: in a perfect world, Fiona Staples will draw all of our characters at least once. With that on the record, I’m thrilled to announce that Fiona Staples will be the guest artist for Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti’s JONAH HEX #66.

Here’s the cover. I promise I’ll be showing off more from the issue as soon as I get my hands on it.

JONAH HEX #66 hits shops in April.

DCU IN 2011: THE LORD OF DARKNESS IN STARK BLACK AND WHITE

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

By David Hyde

“The Rise of Eclipso” begins in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA issue 54 and, so far, we’ve kept the lid tight on the details of James Robinson’s epic storyline.

But we can confirm, this one’s got it all:

* Shade.
* Doomsday.
* Blue Lantern Saint Walker joins the League to ensure that all will be well.
* Alpha Lantern Boodikka and Supergirl on the trail of the Cyborg Superman.
* The return of one of the DCU’s classic villains, Eclipso.

Eclipso’s dark, dual nature is all about the tension between light and dark so it’s only appropriate to show off some art by Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund in glorious black and white.

DCU in 2011: Starstruck

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

After butting heads with the Green Lantern Corps and cooling tensions with Tamaran, it seemed like things were getting ready to settle down for Vril Dox’s intrinsically not settled down R.E.B.E.L.S. team, but Starro the Conqueror is back to throw a wrench in the works.

Starro strikes tomorrow in R.E.B.E.L.S. #24, part one of STARSTRUCK, from writer Tony Bedard, and artists Claude St. Aubin and Scott Hanna.

“An albino King Kong with four arms. And a dragon!”

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

Judd Winick’s done a great job in his eight issues of Power Girl telling stories that are not only action-packed, but actually very funny. And as long as he’s been on the series, he’s had Sami Basri drawing all kinds of crazy things, from aliens to robots to OMACs to, well, giant albino gorillas and dragons, as displayed in the POWER GIRL #20 preview below.

…to which I just have to say bravo, gentlemen. Keep up the great work and I’ll be a happy comic reader.

POWER GIRL #20 is on sale this month.

DCU in 2011: Phil Jimenez Signs Exclusive to DC to Draw ‘ADVENTURE’

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

By Brian Cunningham

Phil Jimenez has come home.

To DC Comics, naturally! Phil returns to DC after signing an exclusive contract, and I have the pleasure and privilege of working with him. You see, Phil will be drawing and co-plotting an arc of ADVENTURE COMICS starring the “Legion Academy”—with characters he had a hand in creating, along with co-plotter and scripter Paul Levitz.

Of all of the tentpole DC franchises, Phil has never tried his hand at the classic, iconic 31st century—and as the editor of both LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES and ADVENTURE COMICS, I was stunned when he asked to draw a short story in LEGION #6 this past year. And the more Phil came in to drop off his penciled pages, the more we kinda geeked out on all things Legion—particulary Paul’s powerful and lengthy run during our hardcore fanboy days.

advc_523_02_600

We commiserated on how Paul’s “Encyclopedia Galactica” info-captions would astoundingly have compelling stories within 15 words. And reveled in our mutual fondness for the gruff Timber Wolf. And gushed over Keith Giffen’s unique design of the future—with windowless, curvy structures—and how it still resonates in 2010 as it did back in 1982. With Phil I found a kindred spirit, perfect for all the good stuff going on in the LEGION world right now.

Phil’s ADVENTURE arc begins in February with issue #523, where we really get to know the new class attending “Legion Academy.” These teens-in-training are perfect vehicles for anyone wanting to know more about the future world of the DC Universe. “Academy” is a ground-floor entry point for any new reader that feels daunted by the myriad players and planets of DC’s 31st century.

So, welcome back, Phil! I couldn’t walk away from this Source story without showing off Phil’s cover and a few pages from ADVENTURE #523! And what’s next after this arc? Welllll… I’ve gotta keep SOME surprises for another Source announcement!

DCU in 2011: Phil Hester on Wonder Woman’s villains

Monday, January 10th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

ww16975_600x900
Writer Phil Hester has big plans for Wonder Woman in 2011, which includes digging into dark corners of Diana’s past and deep into her rogues gallery.

Phil says it much better than I can:

“I’ve had the pleasure of revamping a few Wonder Woman villains of late and let me tell you something, I’ve never wished harder for a time machine. I’d love to go back and tell my twelve-year-old self that I’d someday be making a list of real-live DC super villains to play with, and deciding their fates in the pages of Wonder Woman.

Also, I’d knock the peanut butter cups out of my hand.

I’ve spent many a sleepless night making a mental checklist of all the awful people in the DCU who hate our beloved Diana, and though she deserves no enmity from any quarter, the list is long. Long and colorful.

There are decades of rogues to choose from, some ridiculous, some genuinely disturbing. And like Batman’s enemies, Wonder Woman’s seem to take their vendettas very personally. There are so many character flaws and bizarre quirks piled into these creeps that any writer could find a handhold there. I could lose myself for days scaling the mountain of peculiar opponents
lined up against Diana.

Yes, there is no shortage of miscreants who hate Wonder Woman, but that’s not enough for Wonder Woman: Odyssey. Mere hatred won’t do. I unfurl the list again in my head and check off the villains who hate Diana…

Until I find one who loves her.

-Phil Hester

Sweet, right?

DCU in 2011: Scott Ian and Sam Kieth take on THE DEMON

Monday, January 10th, 2011

By Austin Trunick

kiethdemon

Metal fans will recognize Scott Ian as the guitarist from the legendary band Anthrax and comics fans will recognize him as the writer of last year’s LOBO: HIGHWAY TO HELL.

Between releasing “Ironiclast”, the debut album of his newest band, The Damned Things (which features members of Anthrax, Fall Out Boy and Every Time I Die), just last month and launching a nationwide tour on January 19th, the busy musician and writer is announcing that he’s writing a new miniseries starring Etrigan, The Demon, with his LOBO collaborator Sam Kieth on art duties, which’ll hit comic shops later this year.

Scott had a few words to say about the new series:

Holy crap I am excited to be writing The Demon for DC in 2011! I’ve been a fan of Etrigan since I was kid buying comics off of the racks. Jack Kirby created him for Hell’s sake and now I get to spew Hellfire like it’s never been spewed before. And I get to blow up Las Vegas.

It’s going to be a real vulgar display of power (pun intended).

Thanks DC for sending me to Hell and back!

-Scott Ian
