This Valentine’s Day Brings the Wedding of Batman and Wonder Woman

Monday, February 14th, 2011

By David Hyde

We’ll close out today’s posts with a question for SOURCE romantics: who’s your favorite couple in the DCU?

While you ponder that very question, check out a few pages from THE ALL-NEW BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND BOLD #4, featuring some all ages appropriate romance–and the wedding of Wonder Woman and Batman.

This issue is set on Valentine’s Day, so it’s a fitting way to close our day. It’s not a hoax, it’s not a dream and, yes, it’s on sale now.

Gail’s right, of course. Valentine’s Day is a made up day, but we’ll take it.

“Valentine’s Day is just a made-up day. But so is Wednesday.”

Monday, February 14th, 2011

By David Hyde

Someone once said “Valentine’s Day is just a made-up day. But so is Wednesday. Also, I think gravity is made up.”

That someone? Gail Simone.

Hmmm, that doesn’t exactly bode well for Huntress and Catman’s upcoming first date, does it? We asked Gail, is this going to be a disastrous first date?

Here’s what she had to say about BIRDS OF PREY issue 11:

“The most requested date in BIRDS OF PREY history happens in this issue. It’s mostly about shy glances over a shared milkshake, and holding hands chastely in a lovely dewy meadow while parasols twirl slowly in the gentle breeze of Autumnal air.

“Well, no, not REALLY, these are the two lustiest, toughest members of the Birds and the Secret Six, so it’s really more about sharp pointy things and bad behavior!”

Bad behavior? From Catman and Huntress?

Come to think of it, most of the time, these relationships seem destined to end in tragedy.

Superheroes rarely have much luck with romance, but it can happen…

How does the world’s smartest man spend Valentine’s Day?

Monday, February 14th, 2011

By David Hyde

You might have noticed it’s Valentine’s Day. Maybe you have big plans for tonight or maybe you’re avoiding the holiday and wish I hadn’t brought it up.

The DC Universe is full of interesting couples: Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Aquaman and Mera, Barry Allen and Iris West, the Hawks. Hey, Catman and Huntress have a big date coming up, so we’ll see where that leads…

But what about the world’s smartest man? I e-mailed Paul Cornell to ask him how Lex Luthor might me spending the day. Here’s what he had to say:

“Lex Luthor isn’t one for Valentine’s Day treats, but he built Robot Lois Lane to surprise and challenge him, so when she asked to go out and see a Broadway show, he was interested enough to agree. The show was Wicked, which Lex impatiently sat through. At dinner afterwards, he asked her why she’d wept at the spectacle of someone who took so long to realize they were surrounded by fools who would never accept them. If he’d been involved, he’d have conquered gravity rather than defied it. Also he was quite surprised she could weep. Lois told him she enjoyed dramas about betrayal. That she learned from them. That made Lex laugh: now he saw what she meant, that his Lois was so like him, was literally made for him, to seek to understand his own experience! Which made her turn her face away to hide her expression. And as soon as her face was turned, Lex’s own smile vanished. They had a big day coming up, a flight into space to retrieve the black spheres that would lead Lex to ultimate power. So they got an early night.”

Static Shock to star in his own book this spring

Friday, February 11th, 2011

By David Hyde

It’s been almost ten years since Static Shock had a book of his own, but that’ll change this spring when writer Felicia Henderson and artists Scott McDaniel and Jonathan Glapion bring Virgil Hawkins back for a new ongoing series!

We asked writer Felicia Henderson to tell us a bit about what it’s like to be bringing the character back:

I always had my fingers crossed about Static getting his own book, again.  In fact, I stalked Dan DiDio about the idea.  I’m also a big Dwayne McDuffie fan, and if I could choose my real life little brother, he’d be Static!  I love his relationship with his family, particularly with his sister. It feels very grounded and real to me. I love how much he cares about Dakota and that he’s a typical guy in a lot of ways. And nothing’s more fun to write than raging hormones, a dedication to doing the right thing for the right reasons, all while still trying to figure out who you are and what you really want.

Check out Keron Grant’s cover to STATIC SHOCK #1, hitting stores in May.

FLASHPOINT THURSDAY Final Edition, Live from ComicsPRO

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

By David Hyde

flashpoint-logo5thursdayedi

We’re wrapping up today’s special Thursday edition of Flashpoint Friday, live from ComicsPRO.

Remember the rings? Those BLACKEST NIGHT rings?

Well, my colleagues in Sales & Marketing are on stage right now announcing special FLASHPOINT edition Flash rings will be available at comic book shops this June, with the release of FLASHPOINT #2.

To coincide with the release of FLASHPOINT mini series, DC Comics will also be creating exclusive buttons, featuring the reimagined superhero logos of FLASHPOINT. So far only nine of the logos have been unveiled, but there will be buttons corresponding to each of the FLASHPOINT mini series. The buttons will only be available at comic book stores and will not be one of our (many) cool convention giveaways. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to score one of the Citizen Cold buttons.

OK, that’s enough for today.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY resumes in its usual time slot, Friday, February 18th, live from Panama.

See you then.
