(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Wednesday Morning (ET) Edition

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

By David Hyde

DC Comics-The New 52 was unleashed on Wednesday, August 31st, with the publication of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. Last week, we saw the release of ACTION COMICS #1, DETECTIVE COMICS #1 and other buzz worthy first issues that have everybody talking.

There will never be another Wednesday like it.

Until today.

Still not sure what titles to pick up from DC Comics-The New 52? We’ve got links to two more previews out there to help guide you in the right direction.

FEARNET has the exclusive first look at RESURRECTION MAN # 1, in which “the character is reborn for the 21st century.”

WIRED’s UNDERWIRE blog has the very first look at DEMON KNIGHTS. Their take? “Demon Knights has perfectly positioned Etrigan for the 21st-century fantasy addicts that have made HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones a crossover phenomenon.”

Meanwhile, SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE has an overview of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with a particular focus on Superman in ACTION COMICS. “This is a huge departure from decades of the character’s role as invincible protector of the status quo. And to tell you the truth, it’s fresh air. . . . I like this all-too-human Superman, and I think a lot of you will, too.”

(Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC Comics-The New 52, Tuesday Afternoon (ET) Edition

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

By David Hyde

With the second full week of releases of DC Comics-The New 52 coming out tomorrow, more and more previews continue to roll out.

TV GUIDE MAGAZINE has the first exclusive look at SUICIDE SQUAD #1. “Espionage is not pretty, it’s not martinis and tuxedos, it’s usually down and dirty,” series writer Adam Glass (Supernatural) told them.

COMICS ALLIANCE debuted a 5-page sequence from BIRDS OF PREY #1 by Duane Swierczynski and Jesus Saiz (and in case you missed it last week, be sure to read Editor Janelle Asselin’s blog post on what to expect from the series).

NEWSARAMA has the exclusive preview of DEATHSTROKE #1 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett and Art Thibert.

IGN continued their series of interviews with the writers and artists of all the books in DC Comics-The New 52. “Slade is a strategist—he’s two, sometimes three steps ahead in a fight,” Kyle Higgins said when asked about DEATHSTROKE.

“The first thing we do is show that Batwoman just wants to be the good soldier of Gotham,” described BATWOMAN writer/artist J.H. Williams III told IGN. “She’s going after crimes and villains that really don’t connect to her personal story, but they quickly become personal for her mission.”

“One of the primary aspects of his character that makes him so appealing and compelling is that he makes mistakes – big, huge messes in his life, and yet he keeps going on,” GREEN ARROW writer J.T. Krul said about the series’ protagonist to IGN. “He doesn’t make excuses for himself; he doesn’t pass the buck – Oliver Queen freely and wholeheartedly puts the blame on his shoulders and carries the weight day in and day out.”

NEWSARAMA also debuted the cover to DETECTIVE COMICS #4. Meanwhile, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES has the first look at the cover for ACTION COMICS #4 and WORD BALLOON premiered the cover to GREEN LANTERN #4.

From The Editor’s Desk: Chris Conroy on SUPERBOY

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

By Chris Conroy

I swear, working with Scott Lobdell is just like working with a kid sometimes.

He’s probably saying the same thing about me, mind you. There’s nothing quite so satisfying about my job as needling poor Scott about our age difference, and about how much I loved his comics when I was a kid. But ironically, not only has Scott been responsible for putting a couple more gray hairs on my head since I got the job of editing the new SUPERBOY, it turns out he’s the one with all the boundless enthusiasm of a teenager – the kind of guy who’s constantly challenging you, asking “why” when you tell him “no,” and more often than not, being obnoxiously, insufferably right about how your grown-up ideas of what you can and can’t do are just wrong, wrong, wrong.

That’s the spirit he brings to his new takes on TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY. These are headstrong teenagers, who may not know a lot – and in Superboy’s case, fresh from the cloning tank, he knows nothing at all – but they know wrong when they see it, and they’re not going to stand for it. We went right back to the basics for Superboy’s story, and like the scientists that cloned him from Kryptonian and human DNA, we’ve rebuilt him from the bones up. Like all teenagers, he’s struggling with the facts of who he is, of the choices that were made for him and the burdens placed on him before he was even born. But unlike most teenagers, he’s got the kind of power that can reshape the face of the world. When someone tells Superboy “no,” he doesn’t have to listen.

But without a family to raise him, without anyone in this world that he can trust, how is he going to keep himself from succumbing to the worst aspects of his newborn personality? It’s a big scary world out there, and none of us are quite ready for it when we’re thrust into it under the best of circumstances. It’s safe to say that when Superboy meets the wider world, it’s under just about the worst circumstances possible. That’s bad news for poor Superboy, and it’s even worse news for the people in his way… even if they’re the Teen Titans, the only other kids on the face of the planet who might be able to understand him.

This is heartbreaking stuff, really it is. And as drawn by the masterful young Brazilian artist R.B. Silva, penciller of the mind-bogglingly great JIMMY OLSEN feature recently seen in ACTION COMICS, you will feel every blow – emotional and physical. Things get broken, including teenage hearts. All the people who surround Superboy are not who they seem – including some faces that may be familiar to a few of you, and who you never expected to meet in a place like this. And every issue, the plot takes another zig where you’d expect it to zag – away from your expectations for what Superboy’s powers are, or the true nature of his origin, or who his enemies and friends might be.

Life never turns out quite the way you plan for it. I never would’ve believed I’d be working with one of my childhood idols, for one. And poor Scott never believed he’d have to put up with the likes of a greenhorn like me. But some of us are just meant to do certain things and Scott Lobdell was meant to write SUPERBOY, the story of the boy who couldn’t be stopped. Superboy is loose in the DC universe now, and he’s got a few ideas on how things should be…

(EVERYBODY’S TALKIN’ ABOUT) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, MONDAY EVENING (ET) EDITION

Monday, September 12th, 2011

By David Hyde

Earlier today, we announced that all the books in the first two weeks of release from DC Comics-The New 52. As we ready for the week two books to hit stores, here are some of the press highlights from the past few days.

USA TODAY ran an exclusive preview of FRANKENSTEIN, AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E. and interviewed the series’ writer, Jeff Lemire (who also writes ANIMAL MAN). “I want to get deeper into his origin and see what makes this monster basically want to protect humanity,” Lemire said of Frankenstein.

IFANBOY published their exclusive preview of GRIFTER #1. “It’s Grifter from day one, from square one,” series writer Nathan Edmonson teased to them. “It’s not a Grifter you’ve seen before. It’s not a story you’re familiar with.”

IGN debuted the first six pages of RED LANTERNS #1, by Peter Millian and Ed Benes.

COMIC BOOK RESOURCES had the first look at BATMAN AND ROBIN #1 by Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray.

COMPLEX interviewed Scott Snyder about the two series he’s writing, BATMAN and SWAMP THING. “It’s a big epic, ambitious story about Bruce Wayne and the way he thinks of Gotham as his friend and this kind of ancient evil under Gotham that exists, or may exist, that he has somehow overlooked as Batman,” Snyder said of BATMAN. “So it has to do with the history of the Wayne family and the Grayson family, and there will be big revelations about this enemy from the past, and this enemy is going to bring all the weight of history against the Bat family and try to crush them.”

IO9 posted quick reviews of each of the first week’s worth of releases from DC Comics-The New 52. They also dubbed ANIMAL MAN as the best book thus far. “One of the reasons Animal Man #1 works so well is that Lemire plops the reader right down into his daily routine…and then drops the horror in the final act,” wrote Cyriaque Lamar. “Gold stars for the creative team.”
