ART TOUR on The Source with Doug Mahnke

Friday, October 7th, 2011

By Pamela Mullin

As part of DC Comics-The New 52 Art Tour, GREEN LANTERN artist, Doug Mahnke will be appearing at Source Comics Wednesday, October 12 in Falcon Heights, MN.

Doug is enjoying the challenge of drawing Hal Jordan as a civilian. Here, Doug explains what feelings and emotions he is trying to convey in Hal Jordan’s face and body language. Check out his pencils and the final colored image of panel 4 on page 4 from GREEN LANTERN issue #2 below, and pick up a copy next week.

In panel 4 page 4 I did the best to give Hal a look of disbelief and longing to reflect how badly he wants the ring and disbelief that Sinestro could in any way give him the one thing he wants more than anything else: to be a GL again. I am always happy when I get an upshot right, and in this case I think I did!

Drawing Hal out of costume in the truest sense, ringless and down on his luck, has been one of the perks of drawing GL lately.

ART TOUR on the Source with Francis Manapul

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

By Pamela Mullin

Francis Manapul, THE FLASH artist and co-writer, shares his step-by-step process for a teaser image he created. The first 3 steps incorporate never-before-seen art from next month’s issue #3. And in the last step, you can see how Francis manipulated the image for the DC Comics-The New 52 Art Tour. Enjoy!

I don’t really have a design background. But I am a fan of bold and graphic images. Something about a simple well thought out composition just speaks to me, more so than a detailed drawing. If you’ve been following any of the new images released for The Flash, I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve started playing around with my composition and even started dabbling with typography. However when it came to designing this, it really was just dumb luck.

I’m a huge, HUGE, Will Eisner fan. He was an absolute genius. Inspired by him I wanted to create pages that not only told a story, but also worked as a title page. So playing around with the composition, and typography I started with a layout.

After the layout stage, I illustrated the page using traditional mediums (brushes, ink, and watercolor).

I wanted to incorporate “the Flash” typography with the illustration of the plane, and I knew it was easier to do digitally. It was also a safer route in case it didn’t work. Luckily, I like to think it did. I colored the Flash simply because I needed to see what color for the text would compliment his red costume.

This is when dumb luck struck. Ever so often I would turn off the line work layer to pick out the color and make adjustments. Most of the time it looks weird. But this time I found myself saying “hey that kinda looks cooler than the finished version”.

From there I put the hand lettering I had done back in. Then inspiration struck!

I cleaned up the coloring, added some standard font types (I don’t have many, just the presets in Photoshop) but they work just as well I think, and voila! I get to pretend I’m a graphic designer!

I was asked to try and make the piece work for the  DC Comics-The New 52 Art Tour, so I simply just added some process work in the background. Easy, peasy.

The fact they’ve decided to give me an exclusive shows their faith in me and my work – and when you see what happens in the next three issues, you will be absolutely blown away! (Everybody’s Talkin’ About) DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, Wednesday Morning (ET) Edition

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

By David Hyde

Last Friday, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES and Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles hosted a wrap party for the first month of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. The writers and artists in attendance included Brian Buccellato, Bernard Chang, Mike Costa, Dan DiDio, Josh Fialkov, Sterling Gates, Adam Glass, Kyle Higgins and Scott Lobdell. Head on over to COMIC BOOK RESOURCES to hear all of these creators talk about what titles from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 were their favorites. “It was really exciting to work with Francis on the book because he saw this book visually first,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and O.M.A.C. writer Dan DiDio about THE FLASH. “He was talking about images and speed and how he was going to be able to interpret the fastest man in the world. And when you saw the art come in, you couldn’t help but get super excited because you saw this visual interpretation that feels incredibly fresh.”

Sara Lima at COMICVINE published a piece on how DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 has made iconic leading lady Lois Lane into a powerful, self-sufficient, successful and integral female character. “This Lois finally gets to be the boss. She’s smart, sassy, and has no problem standing up to the man who promoted her to Vice President,” wrote Lima. “She’s certainly stronger, more interesting and has a lot more depth.”

Finally, as gamers everywhere already know, BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, the long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster game, BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM, hits stores in less than two weeks. G4 ran the first two of three segments showcasing the villains that The Dark Knight will be facing this time around. Watch the videos to catch a glimpse at how characters like Two-Face, Penguin, Solomon Grundy, Talla al Ghul, Riddler, Catwoman, and of course, Joker, will look in the new game. And remember to pick up BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY, available for PS3, XBOX 360 and PC, on October 18th.

Get Heard at New York Comic-Con

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

By Brandy Phillips

Next week we’ll be coming at you live from New York Comic-Con. You may have already seen our schedule of panels but we can assure you that’s just the beginning. There will be lots of great activities for those in attendance, lots of exciting announcements that we’ll be sharing with you here and so much more.

But even if you can’t be at the Javits Center in person we want to involve you in what’s going on there.

Throughout the rest of this week we’ll be posting “Open Thread” updates to the DC Comics Facebook page, one for each scheduled panel. There you can leave the question you would want to ask if you were able to wait in line for a turn at the microphone. We’ll pick a couple of the questions we receive on Facebook and have the panelists address them so you can have your voice heard regardless of where you are.

Make sure to watch not only our Facebook page but also our Twitter profile and YouTube channel (we told you we have a YouTube channel, right?) for updates from throughout New York Comic-Con. We have lots of good stuff lined up and want to make sure you don’t miss a beat.
