‘Tis the season for giving, for decking the halls and for jingling bells. And if you’re looking to make an impression with a gift for your favorite comic book fan (or perhaps a treat for yourself), then there’s no better way than with DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Omnibus – and here are three reasons why:
1. It’s big. No, really – it’s big. Weighing in at a whopping 7.9 lbs, its heft is matched only by its magnitude and scope (see: #2 on this list). They say that the human head weighs eight pounds, and while reading DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 won’t physically increase the size of your brain, lifting the Omnibus will certainly increase the size of your muscles.
2. It’s EPIC. A lot’s been said about the scope and scale of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, and this massive tome collects it all – superhero stories and tales of horror, western yarns and chronicles of the front lines, science-fiction and even some science fact, new characters and new takes on old favorites. This represents the full width, breadth and depth of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, collecting every single first issue from the status quo-shattering release event – including JUSTICE LEAGUE #1, ACTION COMICS #1, DETECTIVE COMICS #1, SUPERMAN #1, BATMAN #1, WONDER WOMAN #1, AQUAMAN #1 and many, many, many more. There’s no better way to feel the full weight of this historic publishing initiative than by holding it your hands. And speaking of weight, did we mention that it’s heavy?
3. It’s a great way to get into comics. Whether you’re a lapsed reader overwhelmed by the weight of canon or you’ve never read a single issue, DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Omnibus provides a buffet – a veritable cornucopia! – of introductory stories, many of which have been specifically designed with new readers in mind.
DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 Omnibus hits bookstores on December 13, but if you are thinking of picking one up, remember: lift with your legs!

(The cover to MISTER TERRIFIC #7)
In MISTER TERRIFIC, the third smartest man alive uses his brains as much as his superhero brawn and writer Eric Wallace has made a point of weaving real-world scientific concepts into the decidedly science-fiction exploits of his titular hero. THE SCIENCE AND ENTERTAINMENT EXCHANGE caught up with Wallace to discuss some of the scientific underpinnings behind MISTER TERRIFIC’s ongoing series for DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.
“I always try to keep the science in Mister Terrific as accurate as possible. But yes, sometimes story trumps science when it comes to entertaining plots. A perfect example of this occurs in MISTER TERRIFIC #3,” said Wallace. “The villain Brainstorm is using cognitive enhancing neurotransmitters to increase intelligence in unsuspecting humans, which he later feeds on. Okay, a villain who ‘eats’ intelligence? It’s far out, but maybe it could happen. And there are actual theories out there about chemicals in the brain that may or may not enhance cognitive functions. So far, the science is a bit futuristic yet still plausible.”

Aquaman may be fighting against the tide of public opinion within the pages of his eponymous series, but his profile in the real-world media is undergoing a sea change thanks to his depiction in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. In an interview with THE HUFFINGTON POST, writer Geoff Johns dove right in to a candid conversation about the less flattering perceptions of the character and how he embraced the challenge of making Aquaman relevant.
“I went back and read a lot of the old Aquaman and there’s a lot of great stuff, but there was this attempt to push him as hard as he could to be cool or edgy and I thought that addressing that stuff would appeal to anybody, not just comics readers. It was different, no one had done that yet, and I thought it was more real and honest. And it’s fun, working with an underdog.”

On Monday, we showed you an exclusive preview of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1. Today, we’re giving you a sneak peek at some of artist Wes Craig’s character designs. How did Colleen, Menthor, NoMan, Lightning and Dynamo’s looks evolve for volume 2 of the critically acclaimed series?
“CAFU’s original design for the characters were great, and I stuck to them pretty closely, making little tweaks that would suit my style better, but mostly sticking to what he’d laid out,” Craig exclusively told THE SOURCE.
“Their powers: Usually the artist display’s a hero’s super-powers as majestic and awe-inspiring. But with the Agents, their powers can potentially kill them so I wanted the feeling that their powers were a bit out of their control and that it made them feel a bit sick inside to use them.
Lightning: I love characters with super-speed.
NoMan: I wanted to give myself a challenge in how to draw his invisibility powers without just using a Photoshop fade-out effect, and I think I’ve found some fun solutions.
Colleen: Colleen’s going to have a fancy new ‘season two’ haircut, but we hadn’t thought of that yet when I was drawing these designs.
The Subterraneans: I had a kick drawing these guys since it was my first major contribution to the look of the series. I tried to stick to the basic idea of the original 60′s design with these guys, but make them a bit scarier and more reptilian. Drawing their subterranean kingdom has also been a lot of fun.”
Check out the gallery of Craig’s character designs below and be sure to pick up T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1, in stores today.

All week, you’ve seen the members of Tiny Titans scratch their heads at the perplexing identity of the woman in purple showing up throughout TINY TITANS #46.
Well, there’s only so much mystery that Wonder Girl enjoys before she takes matters into her own hands to figure out the answers.

Now that the gang has finally caught this woman, they’re ready to find out who she really is and what she wants. So who is she?

You’ll have to pick up TINY TITANS #46 to find out why Barbara, Wonder Girl and Superboy are so shocked in the above panel when they discover the woman in purple’s true identity.
“This purple lady is everywhere!” series co-writer Franco said exclusively to THE SOURCE. “From my understanding, she’s shown up in every single issue of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52! Well, now she’s shown up in 53 issues because we are revealing the truth about who she is and what she’s doing and that’s going to happen in TINY TITANS!”
“She’s in TINY TITANS? Y’know, I thought it was weird when I returned from my coffee break to discover my artwork had been altered,” series co-writer and artist Art Baltazar continued. “Must be the work of that purple lady’s elves. You never know where that Purple Lady will show up next! Besides I always thought she was pink. Now, I like purple very much, Lois.”

“Because no matter how good you think you are at drawing a line between work and home, there will always be some cases that stay with you … cases that come howling back at you out of the darkness, like phone calls in the middle of the night.” – Commissioner James Gordon
Few understand the extent of darkness that dwells within the heart of Gotham City like Batman and Commissioner James Gordon do. But when the grave threats that torment Gotham may lie within Gordon’s own bloodline, he’ll be put to the test like never before.
With Dick Grayson behind the cape and cowl of the Dark Knight, it’ll be up to Batman and Commissioner Gordon to embark on one of their most personal missions yet to protect Gotham before the fate of the entire city is completely doomed.
From the acclaimed creative team of Scott Snyder, Jock and Francesco Francavilla, BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR collects DETECTIVE COMICS #871-881 and is quickly shaping up to be one of the hottest gifts for comic book fans this holiday season.
“Though his run as Batman is over, THE BLACK MIRROR will remain the defining chapter of Dick Grayson’s stint as the Dark Knight,” IGN wrote of the book. “Perhaps more importantly is the story’s contributions to Jim Gordon and Gotham City itself – two of DC’s most underappreciated characters – which Snyder and company give a defining appearance not seen in such stunning display since BATMAN: YEAR ONE. By all accounts, THE BLACK MIRROR is the Batman story to beat for the next generation of superhero comics.”
“Snyder knows how to make things disturbing and mysterious while keeping a strong level of action driving the plot forward. He brings a level of sophistication and class to the title,” continued YAHOO! ASSOCIATED CONTENT.
Check out the gallery below for a sneak peek at some of the rare sketches and designs included in the back of the book. BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR is available in bookstores everywhere now.
