“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Eduardo Barreto. His work helped to chart the course of many DC Comics’ characters, from Superman to the New Teen Titans. Personally, I was a fan of his work from his time here at DC Comics.” – Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher, DC Entertainment

“With his impeccable draftsmanship and attention to nuance and detail, Eduardo Barreto was a true artist’s artist. A mainstay of DC Comics, he was one of the key artists during the 1980s who not only helped define the look and feel of the DC Universe but got me hooked on the Teen Titans. His incredible work and vision will be missed.” – Jim Lee, Co-Publisher, DC Entertainment

Remembering Joe Simon

“Joe Simon was a true legend in the comic book industry. So much of what we are today is owed to him and his amazing creativity. In addition to one of the great writers of the Golden Age, he was also an editor at DC Comics. We appreciate all of his contributions to DC Comics and the industry as a whole, both on the page and behind the scenes.” – Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher, DC Entertainment

“We lost another of the Titans this week. A creative virtuoso, Joe Simon will be best known for co-creating Captain America with legendary artist Jack Kirby but his many contributions to DC Comics, both as a writer and an editor, are legion and will continue to be cherished by longtime fans, this one included. Our sympathies go out to his family, friends and many, many fans.” – Jim Lee, Co-Publisher, DC Entertainment

“Jerry Robinson illustrated some of the defining images of pop culture’s greatest icons. As an artist myself, it’s impossible not to feel humbled by his body of work. Everyone who loves comics owes Jerry a debt of gratitude for the rich legacy that he leaves behind.”—Jim Lee, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and artist of BATMAN: HUSH

“Jerry Robinson was one of the greats. He continued to be a vibrant, creative force, with ideas and thoughts that continue to inspire. Jerry was a great advocate for creators. It was my pleasure to meet and work with him. He will be missed.”—Dan DiDio, Co-Publisher, DC Entertainment

“It’s impossible to work at DC Entertainment without feeling the impact of Jerry Robinson’s contributions to the industry. His influence continues to resonate today.”—Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief

“Jerry Robinson was an innovator, a pioneer in storytelling. His artwork was always astonishing, but his contributions to the Dark Knight mythology go far beyond art. The streets of Gotham City are a little lonelier today…Jerry will truly be missed.”—Mike Marts, BATMAN editor

3 Things To Know About Bunker!

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

By admin

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

1. For a young kid from a small village in Mexico, he seems to have been pretty well trained in the use of his super powers before coming here to the States, no? Hmmm. We’ll discover that he’s received private tutelage … from a very unexpected source!

2. In order to join the Teen Titans, Miguel had to turn his back on the first great love of his life. When that love comes back, he’s going to learn that the same passion that fueled their relationship might very well consume him.

3. At first glance it doesn’t seem like Bunker has the most awe-inspiring super power in the world (A 3×3 foot pile of psionic bricks that he can manipulate as he pleases). But in issue five, when he squares off against no less a threat than the Superboy, we understand what he lacks in caliber he more than makes up for in moxie!

– Scott Lobdell (TEEN TITANS)

3 Things to Know About the Birds of Prey

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

People have been asking me why I’m so quiet when it comes to Birds of Prey. It’s true; I haven’t done many interviews. When friends stop me on the street and ask about the book, I usually scream “HOLY CAT WHAT IS THAT BEHIND YOU” and scramble in the opposite direction. Um, yeah… I’ve been a bit cagey when it comes to this comic. Thing is, while Birds of Prey is about the great characters… it’s also about the surprises, and I’m serious about not wanting to ruin any of the twists and turns that lie ahead.

But last week, when I visited the DC Comics HQ in New York City, my editor Bobbie Chase spiked my Diet Coke, and the last thing I saw was David Hyde filling a syringe with sodium pentothal. Hours later, on my train back to Philly, I realized they’d pried these three details out of me…

1. Batgirl is back on the team.

Sure, Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl) was reluctant at first. She didn’t necessarily want to be hanging out with a gang of outlaws (see next “Thing to Know #2”), and she has serious doubts about at least one member of team (see “Thing to Know #3”). But to Batgirl, friendship trumps everything, and you’ll see exactly how she finds her way to a permanent spot on the team in issues #4 and 5.

2. Black Canary, Starling and Katana can’t show their faces in public.

That’s because they’re outlaws to one degree or another. Dinah Lance (a.k.a. Black Canary) is wanted for murder. The rumor is she killed a dude with a single punch, but the truth is far darker and stranger than that…

Evelyn Crawford (a.k.a. Starling) is wanted by at least six different intelligence organizations for knowing too much about how the world really works. How did she land in this predicament? Well, wait until you meet her Uncle Earl—a former spy who raised her, and also tries to kill her every now and again. (He has Alzheimer’s.)

And finally, Tatsu Yamashiro (a.k.a. Katana) is wanted by Japan’s National Police Agency for her blood-splattered mission of vengeance against the Yakuza for killing her husband. Criminal profilers in her country think she’s insane because she believes the soul of her husband resides in her sword. Thing is, her own teammates aren’t so sure, either…

3. Poison Ivy has turned over a new leaf.

Okay, not really. Pam Isley (a.k.a. Ivy) is still very much a dedicated eco-terrorist, targeting the people and corporations that mess with Mother Earth. So why’s she hanging out with a bunch of do-gooders like Black Canary and Batgirl (who doesn’t like, trust, and really even tolerate Ivy)? Pretty soon—say, around issue #5—you’re going to see that Ivy has a little side deal going on. Her enhanced biosuit amplifies her metahuman powers to an insane degree, but also comes at a price. And wait until you see how she plans on paying the tab…

Hnnnnnuh? What just happened? Why am I on this moving train? Man, I hope I didn’t say too much back at the DC offices…

– Duane Swierczynski (BIRDS OF PREY)

3 Things You Need to Know about the 9th Dimension (and MR. TERRIFIC)

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Sure, there are many things that travelers to the 9th Dimension should know before embarking on their journey. The first is, travel lightly. Because you’ll probably have to run for your life at some point. Yes, the first thing you should know about the 9th dimension is… that it can be a very dangerous place. Just how dangerous? Look at it this way…

In MISTER TERRIFIC #3, billionaire Michael Holt finally brings Brainstorm—the villain who knows the truth about Michael Holt’s wife, Paula—to justice. But closure comes at a high price and, unable to deal with Brainstorm’s shocking revelation, Mister Terrific loses his cool. Big time. It’s a state of events he’ll regret for years to come, one that sends him looking for solace and redemption in, you guessed, the 9th Dimension.

But there are cruel, terrifying beings waiting for Mister Terrific in the 9th Dimension. They are called THE KRYL and they have been watching Mister Terrific for a very long time. Why? Because they have been waiting for their chance to enlist him in a not-so-terrific cause. Which brings up the second thing you’ll need to know about the 9th dimension: it is in perpetual state of war and has been that way for centuries.

Thanks to the nasty folks designed and pictured above and below in some incredible artwork by the very terrific Gianluca Gugliotta, Mister Terrific’s life is about to get turned upside down.

The third and final thing you should know before traveling into the 9th dimension is that, unlike Los Angeles, there are no street signs (at least not in English). Which means when it comes to navigating dimensional space—or figuring out whom to trust inside an alien warship—you’ll be on your own. So you’d better have a good head on your shoulders, a modicum of super-intelligence, and the MacGuyver-esque ability to escape from almost any situation. Otherwise, you might end up dead at the hands of new, and very different, kind of alien foe.

So get ready, folks. The Kryl make their first appearance this month in MISTER TERRIFIC #3. Their story continues in issues #4 & #5 as Michael Holt embarks on his first “cosmic” adventure. It’s a story that takes this series in a different and surprising direction. Only who will survive the encounter – our hero or The mysterious Kryl?

Stay tuned.

– Eric Wallace (MISTER TERRIFIC)

Kindred Spirits: J.T. Krul on CAPTAIN ATOM

Friday, November 11th, 2011

By admin

One of the very first ideas I had when we started building the new Captain Atom book was to have a team-up of sorts. I’ve said time and again that the genesis for the tone and theme of this book revolves around Captain Atom’s sense of isolation. Given his powers and the very nature of his new form, Captain Atom is virtually an alien on the planet he used to call home. He’s the stranger in the strange land. Ironic, since someone like Superman is an actual alien, yet manages to fit into the world. He’s got family, friends, and even a normal job. All things that continue to elude Captain Atom.

It’s hard for Captain Atom to really connect with anyone else, due to the way he sees the world. It’s all broken down before him – a patchwork of molecules and atoms – It’s like Neo seeing the Matrix. How can you focus on the physical image before you when you see all the layers underneath – all the bits and pieces making up the whole?

That’s where the Flash comes in. Like Captain Atom, he’s also detached from those around him due to the very nature of his powers – the speed at which he experiences the world. Sure, he can slow down, take pause and be part of the world – but his tendency is to go faster. Thus placing himself in a world all his own.

After talking with Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato about their vision of the Flash (a great book, by the way!), Freddie Williams and I set about to bring the Fastest Man Alive into Captain Atom’s world. From a visual standpoint, it simply stunning. Freddie’s Flash is almost an homage to what Francis is doing in his book, and the colors by Jose Villarrubia make both heroes stand out from the rest of the world around them. They are bright, shining stars; and the blues and purples of Captain Atom create a dichotomy of power and status against the reds and yellows of the Flash. They aren’t fighting one another in a physical sense, but the effects of their presence and abilities seem to almost challenge one another. Which one will be the dominant force? This visual component actually highlights a thematic element of the book as the two heroes try to one-up each other while intervening during a violent struggle between rebels and military soldiers in the Middle East.

I’m extremely proud of the way Captain Atom is coming together, and thrilled by the contributions of the entire team. From Freddie and Jose, to Rob Leigh on letters. Our excellent editors – Rachel Gluckstern and Rickey Purdin. And not to mention the continuously killer covers by Stanley Lau.

– J.T. Krul (CAPTAIN ATOM)

3 Things You Didn’t Know About RED LANTERNS

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

There is a place on the dark side of Ysmault — home of the Red Lanterns — where the air is heavy with the smell of death, and the plants are dark and twisted. Long before Bleez, before Zilius Zox and Dex Starr and Skallox, this is where Atrocitus buried his failed experiments. He’d been trying to create his Red Lantern corps–but the first attempts were failures: too insane, too abysmal, to be allowed to live. More lurks here than Atrocitus ever imagined…

Talking of Skallox, few people are aware that Skallox tried to join the equivalent of a dating agency on his home planet, with truly horrific consequences. The terrible story of this unhappy affair will be revealed soon.

And what of Bleez?  She may have undergone the terrible transformation of the Red Lanterns but in issue three a baptism in  Blood Ocean rekindles her intelligence, and her demons.  But will Bleez will  be satisfied at being Atrocitus’ loyal number two? Or will there come a time when the Red Lanterns of Ysmault will have to make a decision? Bleez or Atrocitus. Youth or experience?

Or will an unholy alliance between an Earth-born Red Lantern and a terrible creature from Atrocitus’s past force Atrocitus and Bleez to put aside their differences for good?

– Peter Milligan (RED LANTERNS)

3 Things You Need To Know About 2 New Members of Suicide Squad and 1 Major Betrayal

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

Two new members join the Suicide Squad in issue #3, one from the classic line up (and that’s all I’m saying about that for now), and one brand new character. The newbie is called Yo-Yo, and he can alter his mass and thickness, perfect powers for a thief… or a member of a covert operations squad. We’ll see him in action for the first time, and start to slowly peel back the layers of his personality, who he is, and how he ended up in the Squad.

The other big thing coming up happens a little further down the road. One of the Squad members betrays the team in about the worst way possible, turning their world upside down and threatening to expose them. There’s nothing more worthless than a burned covert operative, so we’ll see what lengths Waller and the Squad will go to maintain their cover. We’ll also learn a lot about our rogue when they go off the reservation, their back story, and what their agenda is. It’s a big, wild two-part story, so buckle up because it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

Three Things You Need to Know if You Are Ever Lost In Time

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Some have said that three is the magic number. If that’s the case, November should be a fascinating month. Here at THE SOURCE, we’ll spotlighting key third issues from DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 with an ongoing series of posts titled “3 Things You Didn’t Know About DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.” Expect the unexpected–in threes.

1) If You Are Too Late to Stop the Release of a Life-Altering Disease, At Least Bring A Cure

So you’re part of a Legion of Superheroes mission team. Your assignment: stop a terrorist trying to use the Time institute to go back in time, save his sister’s life, and release a pathogen that will change all humans into hybrid alien “Hypersapiens.” And you failed to stop him — but, out of control, he went back in time to our present day — and released the disease! Which the Legion field unit, now trapped in our present day, HAVE NO CURE FOR!

2) Do Not Steal Police Cars!

Okay, your flight rings aren’t working and that makes things inconvenient when you have to chase a rabid Hypersapien tearing people apart and sucking the marrow from their bones! But really, in order to get to Fargo, North Dakota, do you REALLY have to steal a car — much less a COP CAR?! We’re looking at you, Timber Wolf.

3) If Two Of Your Teammates Die In Your First Issue And One is a Shapeshifter and one is a Teleporter, Relax, They’re Probably Not Really Dead.

I mean, how long have you been reading comics? C’mon… why one of them might be back already and you just don’t realize it yet…

– Fabian Nicieza (LEGION LOST)
