IAN SATTLER TALKS EMERALD CITY COMICON

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

By Ian Sattler

Hey comics fan, got any plans this weekend? If you’re like me you’re at a bit of a crossroads during this time of year. The NFL season is over, the Olympics are over, Oscar Season is over…what are you supposed to do? Well fear not because Convention Season has just started! That’s right, chances are that we’ll be bringing the 2010 DC Nation Tour to a town near you sometime soon and trust me when I tell you that it’s a show you won’t want to miss.

I leave for our first stop this week and I am STOKED. We’ll be at the Emerald City Comicon at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington on March 13th & 14th. If you’re anywhere near the area please come out and see us. As if the chance to meet myself and Group Editor Eddie Berganza wasn’t enough there are some special guests at the convention that you’ve maybe heard of. Check it out:

Brian Azzarello, Kurt Busiek, Sterling Gates, Patrick Gleason, Brandon Jerwa, Geoff Johns, Aaron Lopresti, Kevin Maguire, Doug Mahnke, Dustin Nguyen, Mike Norton, James Robinson, Greg Rucka, Philip Tan, Pete Tomasi, Eric Trautmann, Jen Van Meter, Len Wein, JH Williams III and Pete Woods.

I hope your face is OK after it was melted off by the sheer awesomeness of that list of artists and writers!

If you are planning to attend the show, please come by and get all kinds of cool stuff from us at the DC booth and be sure to check out our panels:

DC NATION!
Saturday, 1-2pm

GREEN LANTERN: THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT
Saturday, 3-4pm

SUNDAY CONVERSATION
Sunday, 12-1pm

SUPERMAN GOES TO WAR
Sunday, 2-3pm

And listen Seattle - no pressure but you guys are the first convention of 2010 and the Canadian fans have started to bring us potato chips so I hope you guys are ready to step it up.

See you in Seattle!

A Friday hint from Sattler

Friday, October 16th, 2009

By Ian Sattler

Happy Friday DC Nation! I hope that you’re weekend is shaping up to be a good one. I know I’m excited to spend the entirety of Saturday and Sunday watching football with my dog and playing hockey on the PS3. You loyal readers of The Source will notice that I haven’t been home for the weekend in a while so I have a lot of being lazy to get caught up on.

Speaking of my recent travel - a lot of you were wondering about the “Mystery Writer” I was having an iced tea with. I won’t be able to say for a quite a while, but I can give you a new hint. See that picture of my desk? Notice that the message light is lit up on my phone. Having a feeling it might be a call from our friend. We’ll see…

DC NATION on the road with Sattler part 7

I’m back! My journey across the country on behalf of DC Nation came to an end today as I dragged my luggage into my office. Baltimore Comic Con was even better than I expected it to be and we had a fantastic time. On Saturday I was joined on DC Nation by Pete Tomasi, JT Krul, Jamal Igle, Mr. Bob Wayne and Rachel Gluckstern. We laughed, we cried, there were party hats and I hugged a guy…it was great. Then on Sunday Len Wein and Franco joined us for Sunday Conversation where we managed to talk about some DCU stuff between long stories about pro football and overeating (let’s hope JT has learned a valuable lesson about trying to keep up with me at the all you can eat Brazilian place). I’d like to give one more seriously huge THANK YOU to all the fans I saw over the last two weeks. You guys are the best and I hope to see even more of you when we head back out on tour in 2010.

I’ve gotta get back to work now, starting out with reading the final proof of Lobo: Highway To Hell by Scott Ian & Sam Keith (out November 4th!!!)

How’s it going DC Nation? Not a ton of time to post today, as I’m about to get on a flight from LA to Baltimore. Make sure to check back on Monday for a full update from the 10th annual Baltimore Comic Con. We’ll be doing DC Nation and Sunday Conversation and I will probably talk about pro football. Just a hunch on that last one. The one good thing about the length of this flight is that I’ll have time to watch the new Superman/Batman animated DVD. See ya back East!

DC NATION on the road with Sattler part 5

And I thought I took my coffee seriously. I spent part of the afternoon with Philip Tan at his “office” which is a coffee shop. He drives 160miles round trip to work here because it provides him with the right environment to create. At first I thought he was crazy, but the place is comfortable, open ’till midnight and they serve what is easily the strongest coffee I’ve ever had. My hands are shaking while I type this. And as you can see from this Metamorpho sketch, the coffee shop has Mr. Tan in outstanding creative spirits as he gears up for his run on Outsiders with Dan DiDio. Coffee!

DC NATION on the road with Sattler part 4

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

By Ian Sattler

Hello from…well I’m actually not sure where I am right now. Somewhere deep in the Valley in LA at a coffee shop. I’ve driven so much in the last 24 hours that I can’t believe that it’s all been in only one state. Everything is crusing along though and it’s great to hear how into the DCU everybody is right now. That includes the person I’m sitting with as I type this. They are a writer that has never done anything for the DCU, but that is gonna change in 2010. Wanna try and guess? Well here is a hint: This is a picture of their iced tea. Pretty amazing hint, huh? Ok gotta run, but talk to you tomorrow!

DC NATION on the road with Sattler part 3

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

By Ian Sattler

Good morning DC Nation, although I’m guessing it’ll be afternoon by the time most of you read this. I’m working my way through LA meeting with our writers and artists to discuss what’s coming up in your favorite books for 2010.

Today, I met with Mr. Bryan Q. Miller, who in addition to his work on Smallville is currently writing our fantastic new BATGIRL series. I will admit that I’m more than a tad biased about Batgirl-it is absolutely one of my favorite DCU titles. I know there were a lot of different ways we could have gone with this series, but I honestly believe that what Bryan has in store for Stephanie will be one of the best Batgirl arcs of all time. Steph is a character with a lot to prove and I personally can’t wait to see if she’s up to the task. Today, Bryan and I went over all the guest stars we’re expecting in the next year and it’s going to be a tense ride. Trust me-Batgirl is a book you should be checking out. Seriously- it’s worth it for the waffles alone.

So, I’m off to get some more coffee and sit in some more traffic, but check back tomorrow when I might just have a surprise or two up my sleeve.

Later,

Ian Sattler - Senior Story Editor DCU

DC Nation on the road with Sattler part 2

Monday, October 5th, 2009

By Ian Sattler

Way to go Long Beach! I just got back up to LA from the first Long Beach Comic Con and I had a blast. The show was great, the fans were great, the guest list was great and the weather was great.

Of course you’ve heard the big news out of the show was Dan DiDio and Philip Tan on Outsiders and Geoff Johns and Scott Kollins on the Wally West cofeature in The Flash. The DC Nation panel was full of all kinds of awesome as I was joined by Geoff, Philip, Pete Tomasi, JT Krul, Sterling Gates and Mr. Bob Wayne. We talked about the popularity of Red Lantern cats, our favorite superhero movies and the many ways we could kill Lady Blackhawk. The Long Beach fans were excellent and I look forward to coming back next year.

The only thing that went wrong at the show was that I forgot to take pictures of the panel. This daily blogging thing is new to me and I got distracted when they gave me a cordless microphone to run around the room with. I tried to make up for it with these pictures of Philip and Dustin Nguyen at their tables. I’ll try and do better this week.

See you tomorrow,

Ian Sattler, Senior Story Editor DCU

DC Nation on the road with Sattler part 1

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

By Ian Sattler

How’s it going DC Nation? This is DCU Senior Story Editor Ian Sattler coming to you from Long Beach, California. We’re trying something new on The Source this week and I think it’s gonna be fun for all of us as long as I don’t crash my car…but I’m getting ahead of myself.

For the next ten days I’m out on the road attending the Long Beach Comic Con and the Baltimore Comic Con with a stop over in Los Angeles along the way. I’m going to be meeting with our artists and writers, running panels, making surprise announcements and giving you guys a glimpse into what will be the longest trip so far in my tenure at DC Comics.

I arrived at LAX this morning on not a lot of sleep and was unstoked to see that the Santa Ana winds had the temperature up at around 90 degrees, which is just how I like it on October 1st. I got the shuttle to my rental car and I then spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out how to start it. I somehow managed to procure a hybrid vehicle and it doesn’t have any actual keys - just buttons. I opened the trunk, opened the hood, set off the alarm, opened the trunk again, broke into a sweat before I realized that the AC wasn’t on and then I finally realized that the car was already on and all I had to do was put it in drive.

I didn’t make it very far before I ran into one of my very favorite things about LA – extensive traffic at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday. A looooooooong time later I made it to the 710 freeway and decided to take a picture for this blog post. I’m not going to do this again without stopping the car first as I came very close to having the next picture on my phone being of the scene of the accident. Check out the brake lights on the car in front of me. Yikes.

I’m happily at my hotel now and excited to hit the show tomorrow. We’ve got a GREAT DC Nation panel on Saturday with Geoff Johns, Philip Tan, Pete Tomasi, JT Krul and a whole bunch more of our friends. Check back in Saturday for a special post with news and announcements. For now I’m off to read Batman #692 again because Tony Daniel is awesome.

Talk to you soon,

Ian.
