Did the RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE covers from Friday sate your hunger for Batman news? We didn’t think so.
Luckily, BATMAN AND ROBIN double-ships this month, and the creative team supreme of Grant Morrison and artist Cameron Stewart continue the “Blackest Knight” storyline with #8.
Only months into his new role as Batman, Dick Grayson faces perhaps the biggest threat of his life. In hopes of attaining his heart’s desire, has Dick instead unleashed a terror the likes of which the world has never seen?
Meanwhile, back in Gotham City, Alfred and a recuperating Robin are at the mercy of someone both fearsome and familiar. But don’t let my words sell you on how great this issue is. Check out some pages below.

I don’t feel Grant Morrison has Batwoman’s voice. It just doesn’t sound like the Kate we’ve come to know in Detective. I’m still on the fence about this title.

Grant Morrison has such grand and awesome ideas, but his writing is so disjointed and vague that his stories just end up confusing and/or anti-climatic. These pages illustrate my point. I expected a big build-up to the return of Bruce Wayne. Instead, everything has happened so fast, I’m not even sure how we got here. I had the same problem with Final Crisis, and from talking to other people, I know I’m not the only person to feel that way. I want so badly to enjoy his work, but it’s not happening for me. I, too, am on the fence about this title.
the first six issues of this series were great. morrison has now turned around and lost his initial thunder for the series. he has changed dick’s character so much in just the last issue turning him from a moral compass for the bat-family to a hypocryte.
I’m glad Mossison(ftlg)let us in on how Batwoman got there.
I think it needed to be in the other issue.
BUT the Batman rising, is looking cool.
Can’t wait to read it. Like the glowing eyes.
I don’t think Dick’s characterization is off, but Kate’s is hazy in comparison to Detective. This is exactly the kind of weakness Dick would seem to feel, not being thrashed by every two-bit villain under the sun. This title doesn’t have the flash-bang-pow of the first three issues, but it is entirely an exceptional title that I look forward to every month (or even twice a month!).
God of Evil? I’ll be surprised if that’s not Hurt rising in the cape & cowl. I’ve suspected it, but Kate’s speech really has me leaning that way.
Is Dick trying to bring back Batman or is he trying to bring back Bruce Wayne? It just seems odd that he put him in the Lazurus Pit dressed in his Batman costume, I would have taken him out of it. I think Dick is missing the man in the costume…this makes it seem like he’s missing the costume-guy more - if that makes sense.
meisterlegion is right. Why does Dick keep saying “Batman” instead of “Bruce?” (Everyone there ought to be trustworthy with the secret, if they don’t already know.)
People keep guessing at who is really rising from the pit, but could this be Bruce’s body physically alive, just with the soul still out and about?

It’s not bruce, it’s one of the clones. I think it seems rushed because it’s not the story (return of bruce wayne) you all may be thinking it is.
Could Dick have put the body in, knowing it’s not bruce (hence, calling him “Batman”) to see who it really is… dovetailing the story to what’s happening with Tim?
Just a thought.
Thanks for the awesome preview!
With respect to Grant Morrison I hope he leaves Batwoman out of his future stories or cowrites with Greg Rucka. She’s his “baby” and I think he has her proper voice. Grant Morrison is great at quirky Batman stories but Batwoman is not his forte. I know I am repeating myself here. I think its also known here I am not his biggest fan and still haven’t forgiven him for what he did to the main DCU females in Final Crisis. But I think at times they need to rein him in and make him take heed of what the other Bat-writers are doing in the DCU and make it at least fit somewhat. I feel like Dick Grayson has split personality depending on where he appears. He’s Titan-esque in JLA, he’s a dark figure in Detective (or that one time he appeared), he’s a scientist in Streets of Gotham and he’s falling into bizarre traps in the main title. We need cohesion on the “Batman”. I love this character. He’s just not the Dick Grayson I’ve known for my tenure as a fan. That guy is competent and intelligent
When Batman appeared in Detective, it was a flashback with Bruce. Dick’s handling in JLA is all due to Robinson, who has a pretty awful track record as of late. Tony Daniel is still hitting his stride in the eponymous title, and Streets of Gotham, while beautiful, has gone back and forth in writing quality, particularly the latest arc. While I agree that Morrison isn’t really nailing Batwoman’s voice, I think much of the responsibility to continuity here rests with the editors. It is ultimately their primary job to manage the cohesiveness of the DCU, coordinate between creators, and oversee execution.
@coyotegospel: I was talking about Kates first issue when Dick appeared. I like his handling in JLA. I’m aware it was Bruce. I’ve always found that Manhunter was the best part of SOG but I do like it though. I think Dicks recent appearance in sirens with Selina at Christmas is the Dick I like to see

[...] Batman and Robin #8: It’s part two of Cameron Stewart’s (way too) brief run on Grant Morrison’s Batman title, in which we find out what happens after Batman Dick Grayson (”DickBats”) lets the corpse of Batman Bruce Wayne (”OB”) marinate in a Lazarus Pit. What’s weird about this storyline is the fact that there seems to be at least two sets of Batman’s remains, as Black Hand has been lugging Batman’s skull around throughout Blackest Night. If this story is set before Blackest Night, it’s possible that Dick re-buries Batman’s body in the unmarked grave that Black Hand dug it out of, which sort of spoils the resurrection aspect of this story, and then Black Hand also brings OB back to life temporarily. If it’s set after Blackest Night, then that means DickBats recovered Batman’s body and skull at the end of Blackest Night, put it in a vault, then decided to take it out of the vault and try to bring it back to life, after Black Hand temporarily restored OB to life. Either way, it seems a little silly that Batman has been brought back to life so often in so short a span of time. But who cares?! Cameron Stewart drawing DickBats, Batwoman and Knight and Squire fighting undead Batman! It looks like this. [...]
The letterer of the past two issues (7 and
of Batman and Robin has incorrectly placed word bubbles. In issue 7, page 19, frame 3 Batman’s and Batwoman’s dialog is mixed up. In issue 8 page 11 frame 2 has the wrong Batman saying “Get him somebody…”
